There is a moment on the trail when plans stop working. Conditions shift, pressure builds, and every decision carries weight. That is where leadership shows up.

In this episode of the Team & Trail Podcast, we officially introduce the Team & Trail Expedition: Leadership Through Adventure. In March 2027, we will travel the Iditarod Trail from Willow to Nome, not simply as an endurance effort, but as a real-time leadership environment.

This project is built around a central idea. Leadership is not a concept or a checklist. It is something that happens when responsibility and uncertainty meet.

At the core of the expedition is the Leadership Fellowship, designed for college students who want more than theory. Participants will follow the journey, analyze real scenarios, and engage with leadership decisions as they happen. This creates a rare opportunity to observe leadership in conditions where outcomes are not guaranteed.

At the 1928 Winter Olympic Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland, demonstration sports – not part of the official program – were included for the first time. With demonstration events ceasing to exist after 1992, in this podcast, Mushing explores some of these ‘lost sports’ of the Winter Games. Dog Mushing was a demo sport at the 1932 Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, and some very famous dog drivers competed, including Leonard Seppala and Emile St Goddard.

Did you know that sled dogs played a pivotal role in World War II and today we are going to learn the fascinating history of these dogs and how it was not long after the war that organizations such as the Alaska Dog Mushers Association and Alaskan Sled Dog and Racing Association were established. At the same time, races such as the North American Championship sled dog derby and the Fur Rondy Open World Championship Sled Dog Race were started.

It was into this world of dogs and racing that enlisted airborne instructor and World War II veteran Joe Redington Sr., Father of the Iditarod, arrived in Alaska in 1948.

Emily Robinson, 14, says that as a second-generation musher, born and raised in Interior Alaska, I have grown up with a kennel of Alaskan Huskies. From the age of three, my dad has taken me mushing. When I was young, I rode in his sled. By the time I was four, he had built a small dog sled and would tie a rope to the sled so I could glide behind him. I would watch his every move in front of me and copy them. At that early age, I fell in love with dog mushing. My dad started mushing in Michigan when he was in middle school and, after graduation, came to Alaska to work in a kennel. In 2001, he ran the Iditarod and finished with all 16 dogs.

The kennel he started is a part of our family, and now my dad has given me a team to race. My parents have taken me on long trips, and rarely does the weather stop us, even at 30 below 0. Traveling long distances in cold temperatures with the dogs is what we do for fun. We love living in Alaska and the adventures we have exploring the state. Emily placed 6th in last year’s Willow 100. She is in the 8th grade and says she plays old-time fiddle, runs a trapline with her dad, and enjoys swimming. She says her parents have been very supportive as have her friends and family members and she looks forward to this year’s Jr. Iditarod and Willow 100.
