Readers,

We never want books to feel like a chore or for our episodes to be an endless nitpicking critique, but we've found ourselves drifting closer to that reality. We want to return to why we started Not Another Heroine in the first place: love of reading and the desire to share that excitement with another reader. Our first episodes on Sherwood Smith's "Crown Duel," while entirely too long, were exactly that.

On that note, we're taking a hiatus. All of our episodes will still be available on all platforms (except Patreon), and we'll start posting some of our back catalog that wasn't originally available on all the sites. We'll still be reading in the meantime, and when the book feels rights, we'll turn the mics back on for a new Monday episode.

Thank you for sticking with us through four seasons of readings. The book recs, the encouragement, and every like, subscribe, or follow gave us so much joy. To know that we're not alone in the library, that our shelf may look like your shelf, and that our silly episode titles made you giggle too, well, that's why we're still going.

It's not too often that a Pick of the Week turns into a Monday episode but given the similarities to Grace Draven and J.D. Evans, we should've known better.

Traitor Son is a bit of a sleeper hit, equal parts intricate world-building and romance. The heroine is not your typical romantasy lead. She's a bit mousy, submissive, and sometimes innocent to an eyeroll level, but she undergoes massive character growth throughout the novel and you can see her potential in future books.

We won't say too much about Remin, but if sheer brute strength is your thing you won't be disappointed, although we were both rooting for Miche the entire time.

Netflix's Bridgerton Season 4 "She's acting her t*** off."

This iteration is more faithful to the book than past seasons, perhaps that's why we enjoyed it more? Or maybe it's the acting chops of Katie Leung (Araminta) and Yerin Ha (Sophie), who absolutely kill it in both of their roles.

We do have some gripes with the show in general, namely the constant jumping around to different couples who already had a whole damn season for their story. Netflix also seems to miss the mark on the subtle romance of period dramas in favor of HBO-style sex scenes.

This week's episode is a little different from our usual synopsis-style breakdowns. While we both loved this book, we found it challenging to do justice to the narrative's intricacies with a handful of plot highlights and similar book recommendations.

We have done our best to create a sort of Alchemised primer: an introduction to the world and magic system, and a rough breakdown of why the "good" and "bad" guys are fighting with each other. There are slight spoilers, but nothing related to character arcs for Helena and Kaine.

Alchemised is not a book for every romantasy devotee. Fanfiction origins aside, the sheer length of this novel has already divided potential readers. Listen to the first 25ish minutes of the episode for the content warnings and similar books and continue into the second half of the episode for a more concentrated discussion.

Wish fulfillment is what the story feels like and there ain't nothing wrong with that, except when:

a mustache-twirling villain hijacks the plot (at least it was exciting);
the MCs have a taste for exhibitionism but awful timing; and,
the heroine is an inconsistent idiot.

You know when you're hungry and the only thing available is a gas station sandwich that's a few days old but somehow still has some flavor? So you finish it and you feel less hungry but somewhat disappointed with your life choices. That's how we feel about this book.

The writing is fine, there's some semblance of a plot, and the cool background details are engaging, but the characters are unlikeable mostly due to their immaturity. Stick around for the fun music references but maybe wait until the title pops up on Libby to start reading.

We have entered our era of fanfiction. This week we're reading "The Right Thing To Do" by LovesBitca8 (aka Julie Soto, the author of Forget Me Not). This work is the author's first fanfiction, posted in 2017 and served as the inspiration for another beloved fic, "The Auction," due to be published later this year under the title "Rose in Chains."

"The Right Thing To Do" feels like a 16-episode corporate romance k-drama complete with makeover sequence, busybody mom, several secondary love interests, and a third-act break-up. At its heart, this story is driven by the character's insecurities and repeated instances of miscommunication, but despite these typically alienizing tropes we devoured this story and the slowburn to a happily ever after.

It's another DNF week for both of us but not for the reasons you might think. Throne in the Dark is the first book in the Villains & Virtues series and it is all over the romantasy subbreddit. This book is frequently recommended hand in hand with Reign & Ruin by J. D. Evans (which we loved), but this just hits a little different. Well-written but created in the vein of Spaceballs and The Princess Bride, this is a campy romp following the evil son of a demon lord and a do-goody damsel. If that's your thing, you will love this book.
