42 - James Curry Says, "Cut Congress Some Slack"

In this episode, Dr. James Curry, Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame visits with Emily and James about the some of the misperceptions of Congress. Dr. Curry argues that Congress isn't nearly as dysfunctional as many of its critics claim.

He notes that while party is still a major factor in decision-making in Congress, it is not as dominant an influence as it once was. In addition, he claims that legislators are much more concerned about understanding their voters than the media or academics give them credit for. And, Dr. Curry has found that members of Congress have to wade through a bevy of legislative staff, agency personnel, and lobbyists to come to a conclusion about the benefits of any given bill.

In this episode, Emily and James visit with Santiago Ramones, one of the producers for Not My Generation, about his process to becoming a U.S. citizen. Along the way, we learn the difference between Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status, permanent lawful resident ("Green Card" holders) status, and citizenship. In addition we learn that there is no clear delineation of rights to those in any of these statuses, and we discover the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Denaturalization.

21 - Time to Panic, or Time to Take a Breath?

Whether you're talking about politics in Oklahoma or nationally, it seems to be a time of confrontation, hysteria, or despair - depending on your political tribe. In this episode, Emily and James run down a variety of political news that have people talking in Oklahoma and across the nation.

In Oklahoma, primary elections saw a Texas millionaire waste a lot of money in an unsuccessful bid to unseat U.S. Rep Tom Cole (OK CD-4). Also, the OK Supreme Court strikes down an attempt to create a publicly-funded Catholic Charter school. State Schools Superintendent Ryan Walters responds by mandating that all public schools will teach the Bible (as a historical document) and that all public school classrooms will have a Bible in them.

Nationally, Democrats have had a rough couple of weeks. President Joe Biden had a disastrous debate performance, which has led to open calls for him to drop out of the race. President Biden has responded defiantly, saying he is the best candidate to face former President Donald Trump in November. Meanwhile the Supreme Court released (as is its custom at the end of its term) released a slew of cases in which it gave a partial victory to abortion rights advocates, said states are permitted to deny individuals who have restraining orders against them to purchase or own firearms, that former presidents do have some immunity for "official acts," and that the courts will no longer give deference to government agencies when interpreting whether a law passed by Congress authorizes certain rules or regulations created by the agency, but not expressly authorized by Congress.

Along the way, Emily and James move in and out of agreement on various topics, and have a lively discussion of some of the important political events occurring over the last few weeks.

20 - What You Might Not Know about the Supreme Court

Everyone knows that the Supreme Court is divided between 6 "conservative" justices and 3 "liberal" justices - and that's all you really need to know about the decisions made by the Court, right? "Not so fast," says Dr. Dean Jens and Sarah Isgur in their recent article for politico. Jens and Isgur note that roughly 50% of the Court's decisions in its 2022-2023 term were unanimous. Less than 10% of the divided opinions had the 6-3 conservative/liberal division. In addition, 90% of those cases had at least one liberal justice in the majority.

In this episode, Emily and James visit with Dr. Jens and Dr. Keith Eakins, a specialist in judicial processes and Constitutional law, regarding some interesting and unexpected overlaps between justices, the role ideology plays in judicial decision-making, and whether we should think of the camps within the Supreme Court justices as 3-3-3 court rather than 6-3.

Along the way, James tries to explain what is meant by "standing" in the judicial context, Emily and James give a preview of the OK primaries, and they introduce a new segment called "I have questions."

In the interview, Dr. Levitsky explains some of the threats he sees to American Democracy and what can be done to protect against those threats.

James and Emily also discuss the results from the South Carolina presidential primary elections and speculate on the possibility of an independent or third party candidacy by Nikki Haley or another anti-Trump Republican.

13 - Jonathan Rauch Says America Should Apologize to Gay People

In this episode, Emily and James visit with Jonathan Rauch of the Brookings Institution and Dr. Aaron Bachhofer, professor of history at Rose State College. We discuss Jonathan's recent article in the Atlantic Magazine over the failure of the U.S. to acknowledge and apologize for its mistreatment of members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Jonathan and Aaron provide some history as to what Jonathan calls "America's truest and purest experiment in genuine totalitarianism." They also discuss some of the current efforts by some to push back against the equality gains the LGBTQ+ community has had over the past few decades.

Along the way, we learn of Aaron's affinity for scotch and Jonathan's appreciation for classical music. In addition, Jonathan takes James to the woodshed for indulging in the idea of an independent presidential campaign.

12 - Gen Z is Going to be Alright

In this episode, Emily and James pour through the results of survey data collected by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and find some interesting results about Gen Z. For example, a slight majority of "Gen Z women are substantially more liberal than Gen Z men," there is more religious diversity among Gen Z, Americans don't apparently think Gen Z is overly lazy, and Gen Z adults have more negative emotions than older generations.

In addition, we discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict, the war in Ukraine, and Tucker Carlson's Putin/Russian interview/tour (propaganda tour?), and interesting elections coming up internationally. We also discuss the recent death of a non-binary student in Owasso, Oklahoma and the need for transparency from both school officials and law enforcement, as well as a request for restraint from the public on speculation about this case.

Political polarization seems to continue to grow. Republicans and Democrats can't seem to find a way to compromise and work together (Just as Sen. James Lankford). Social media is filled with insults hurled towards political opponents and memes making fun of those with whom we disagree. What can be done?

Enter Unify America and the Bipartisan Policy Center. In this episode, Emily & James visit with Arielle Mizrahi of Unify America and Matt Kuchem from the Bipartisan Policy Center. They discuss the work they are doing to help bridge the divide between people and officials of opposing political views.

Emily has had her students participate in Unify America's "College Bowl" and James has been involved in the Bipartisan Partisan Center's "Campus Free Expression" project. We discuss the special session called just one week prior to the start of the regular session, what legislation will be the focus of this session, and what kind of bills have caught their attention. Along the way we learn one of Tres' nicknames and discuss whether or not X (formerly known as Twitter) should still be called Twitter.

08 - Survey Says: People are Confused

In this episode, Emily & James review the results from two major public opinion polls released by Harvard/Harris and the New York Times. The surveys cover presidential politics and candidates, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and attitudes towards free speech.

Both Emily & James think that some of the questions were not written very well, and that some questions should have been asked that were not. But even with that, the American public seems to be all over the place when it comes to how it feels about various political issues.

The hosts also discuss the recent actions in certain states to remove Donald Trump from the ballot.

07 - Judicial Reform in OK

Emily & James visit with Ryan Haynie of the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs (OCPA) regarding the organization's push to reform the judicial selection process. OCPA wants to ditch the current Judicial Nominating Commission system for a model similar to that outlined in the U.S. Constitution for the national government. Emily & James have questions.

Also, James takes on the OK media, Emily expresses her admiration of Chris Cristie, and both are curious about what surprises might be in store once votes start being cast in the Republican Presidential Primary.

In addition, James goes on a rant about state textbook committees and legislators attempting to determine what or how teachers teach certain subjects.

3 - Improving Direct Democracy in Oklahoma

Did you know that in Oklahoma, citizens can directly make laws through the initiative petition process? Why do some politicians want to make this process more difficult? What are the challenges to using this process to enact change? In this episode, Emily and James interview State Representative Mickey Dollens who recently conducted an interim legislative study on this topic. We'll also discuss the importance of policy experimentation at the local level, and whether rank-choice-voting or open primaries would reduce partisan extremism.

2 - Not My Generation - Chaos is King!

Dr. Emily Stacey and Professor James Davenport discuss the chaos created in the U.S. House of Representatives when a small faction of Republicans were able to oust the current Republican Speaker. Who will be able to satisfy the various factions in the GOP House Conference to win - and keep - the Speakership? And which Oklahoman has been named as a possible "dark horse" candidate for Speaker?

At the state level, Republicans also created some chaos as Governor Stitt's special session on reducing taxes ended almost as quickly as it began. Despite having large majorities in both chambers of the state legislature, the governor failed to effectively coordinate with legislative leaders, especially Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Treat, and saw his effort go down in flames.

Internationally, Dr. Stacey explains why the BRIC nations are expanding and what that means for the United States and the West in general. Also, why do women seem to still lack representation in national and international democratic bodies - including the U.N.?

With so much going on it can be hard to keep up, but James & Emily explain what leads to some of the craziness of national and state politics while keeping an upbeat attitude and recognizing the need for compromise.

Dr. Stacey and Professor Davenport discuss the implication of a Congress and the leading presidential candidates that are significantly older than the people they represent.

How does this age difference impact the policies coming out of Washington, DC? How can younger voters gain more representation? Why don't young citizens vote at the same rates as older voters, and will that change? And who does Dr. Stacey tell to "Go live in Russia?"

It's a lively and entertaining discussion about the importance of political participation and the differences between generations.
