Dr. Curry argues that Congress isn't nearly as dysfunctional as many of its critics claim. </p><p>He notes that while party is still a major factor in decision-making in Congress, it is not as dominant an influence as it once was. In addition, he claims that legislators are much more concerned about understanding their voters than the media or academics give them credit for. In this episode, Emily and James run down a variety of political news that have people talking in Oklahoma and across the nation.</p><p>In Oklahoma, primary elections saw a Texas millionaire waste a lot of money in an unsuccessful bid to unseat U.S. Rep Tom Cole (OK CD-4). Also, the OK Supreme Court strikes down an attempt to create a publicly-funded Catholic Charter school. State Schools Superintendent Ryan Walters responds by mandating that all public schools will teach the Bible (as a historical document) and that all public school classrooms will have a Bible in them.</p><p>Nationally, Democrats have had a rough couple of weeks. President Joe Biden had a disastrous debate performance, which has led to open calls for him to drop out of the race. President Biden has responded defiantly, saying he is the best candidate to face former President Donald Trump in November. In this episode, Emily and James run down a variety of political news that have people talking in Oklahoma and across the nation.</p><p>In Oklahoma, primary elections saw a Texas millionaire waste a lot of money in an unsuccessful bid to unseat U.S. Rep Tom Cole (OK CD-4). Also, the OK Supreme Court strikes down an attempt to create a publicly-funded Catholic Charter school. State Schools Superintendent Ryan Walters responds by mandating that all public schools will teach the Bible (as a historical document) and that all public school classrooms will have a Bible in them.</p><p>Nationally, Democrats have had a rough couple of weeks. President Joe Biden had a disastrous debate performance, which has led to open calls for him to drop out of the race. President Biden has responded defiantly, saying he is the best candidate to face former President Donald Trump in November. "Not so fast," says Dr. Dean Jens and Sarah Isgur in their recent article for politico. Jens and Isgur note that roughly 50% of the Court's decisions in its 2022-2023 term were unanimous. Less than 10% of the divided opinions had the 6-3 conservative/liberal division. Republicans and Democrats can't seem to find a way to compromise and work together (Just as Sen. James Lankford). Social media is filled with insults hurled towards political opponents and memes making fun of those with whom we disagree. What can be done?</p><p>Enter Unify America and the Bipartisan Policy Center. In this episode, Emily &amp; James visit with Arielle Mizrahi of Unify America and Matt Kuchem from the Bipartisan Policy Center. They discuss the work they are doing to help bridge the divide between people and officials of opposing political views. </p><p>Emily has had her students participate in Unify America's "College Bowl" and James has been involved in the Bipartisan Partisan Center's "Campus Free Expression" project.
