Unit Studies that Transcend | Jil Koller

Jil will explain how to systematically create a unit study that captures your kids’ hearts as it stimulates their minds. She will share the value of using unit studies in your homeschool and the ways they can enhance learning across disciples. Participants will develop the spine of their own unit study and share ideas as they vision together.

Jil completed her Bachelor of Arts and Education and went on to complete her Masters of Education at York University. She completed her PhD coursework in Literacy Education and was certified as a Reading Specialist. She owned and operated her own reading clinic in Edmonton, conducting Diagnostic Reading assessments for the local school board, and delivering reading remediation tutoring. She has four children (thanks be to God) and has been homeschooling for twelve years. Jil is on staff, helping to run the children’s program at Redeemer City Church, Orillia.

Heart of a Bowman, Jil’s debut novel, was released this January. It is the first book in the Vertical Horizon Trilogy, an epic Young Adult adventure fantasy written from a Christian worldview. Book two, Heart of a Spy, is available this December with Heart of a Warrior

“To label or not to label,” that is the question. This debate is the start of many interesting conversations around the dinner table once you realize that your child doesn’t fit within the parameters of “normal.” Some may say, “Why bother testing? Labeling? We don’t want to affect their future.” True, kids can change. A label can lead to teasing or exclusion, or it could be used as a crutch. On the other hand, it can be nice to know what has contributed to your child being “different.” Now it has a name. Sharing from her family’s experience, hear how they found relief in knowing that there was a reason behind their struggles, and how they were able to access government funding, programs, and assistance as a result of a diagnosis. Approaching the end of the journey, Sarah cannot believe how quickly it has gone. Over twenty years, there have been too many memories to count as she taught seven children, most of whom have special needs. Contrary to other worldviews, Christianity is based on solid scientific, historical, and archaeological evidence. This workshop is for working parents starting to homeschool and for homeschooling parents who are adding paid work to their lives, either in-home or outside the home. Rowan shares practical ideas to help working homeschool parents, especially moms, manage this juggle from years of experience as a working homeschool mom. She will also show you how to look at the big picture and to get on the same page with your spouse. While the focus is on moms, dads are welcome to attend to gain understanding as well.

Rowan is a second-generation homeschool mom of four children, now grown-up. She is the creator of the Headphone History Canadian history curriculum, as well as Canadian history and geography courses for high school, and the author of ‘Enough Already! Real Help for Homeschool Burnout, Freak Out and Zone Out’. Rowan hosts the Canada Homeschools podcast, and lives in beautiful Southern Georgian Bay with her husband Chris. Rowan likes to garden and spend time with her baby grandson.

She hopes to dissolve any hesitation that you might have about Shakespeare, give you reasons why it should be taught, and also give the practical tools for teaching it. Shakespeare nailed human behaviour, and without even trying, you will present direct character analysis of how to be a person of good, godly character, and how not to be!

Sarah Jane Hobbs has lived in Welland, with her wonderful husband William for the last 23 years. They raised five children, homeschooling all the way through, using the Charlotte Mason Method. As a homeschool mom, having disliked Shakespeare in high school, and teacher at their local co-op, she thought maybe she should give it another try. After that first year she never looked back! She has grown from confusion to clarity and helps her students gain enjoyment as they look at Shakespeare from a Christian worldview. She has edited and directed over 10 Shakespeare plays now and it never grows old.
