Is fanfiction important? Culturally relevant? A thing that will be studied generations from now?

In 2000, Henry Jenkins, Director of Media Studies at MIT, published a piece for the MIT Technology Review in which he wrote:

“Contemporary Web culture is the traditional folk process working at lightning speed on a global scale. The difference is that our core myths now belong to corporations, rather than the folk.”

Previously, he wrote in a 1997 New York Times piece:

“Fan fiction is a way of the culture repairing the damage done in a system where contemporary myths are owned by corporations instead of by the folk.”

Anyone who either writes or consumes Our Flag Means Death fanfiction can feel this sentiment in our bones.

Edward Teach is in love with his best friend and co-owner of Revenge Therapies, but he knows that nothing will ever happen between them. When he's invited to a BDSM convention to give a talk about Kink Aware Therapy, he decides to take it as a chance to unwind and maybe find a playmate in the scene to destress. Because, one of the other secrets he keeps away from Stede are the years he's spent as a dominant in the community.

Instead, one Stede Bonnet appears wanting to support Ed as he runs his panel, except somehow the most oblivious man in the world appears to be completely unaware at just what sort of convention he's stumbled into.

Ed must protect this man at all costs.

Baby Kraken is back on the podcast this week with two podfic narrations by daydreamcrash. “Would that be cool?” is for teen and up audiences and is based on the author’s post Season 2 trailer / pre-season 2 theory they posted on twitter, this theory reads “i do think that if rumour goes around that blackbeard is crashing weddings then the smart (stupid) thing for stede to do would be set up a fuckery of a wedding…”

The other podfic is “once upon a poolside” — it’s an angsty fic that deals with loss, but has a whole lot of love between Ed and Stede. It’s inspired by our wives under the sea by julia armfield. This short, 2000 word fic has about 49 comments of love on it. It’s repeatedly described as “Pure poetry. Devastating poetry.”

On this week’s Epitizer, I’m narrating my most popular fic. It’s light. It’s fluffy. This is 'Whittle Me This' which is about Ed’s attempt to make things up to Lucius. Whittling doesn’t work. He tries other things. It eventually leads to them being attacked by the English Navy…. Izzy is alive through this whole thing. I imagine this as taking place in Season 3 after Izzy has crawled out of the grave and Stede/Ed have reunited with the Revenge.
