The technology of filmmaking is constantly evolving. Back in the day, we used rear projection to make it look like you were sitting in a driving car. Then we figured out green screens to place our actors wherever we wanted. Now we have virtual sets. If you've watched The Mandalorian, you probably know that nearly the whole darn show is shot on a LED virtual set called "The Volume". What you may not know is that virtual sets and the brilliant "Unreal Engine" software that makes them possible is being used right here right now in Oklahoma.

The world of sex scenes and intimacy on the screen and on the stage has always been a bit of an enigma. We need to be able to tell a story or affect the audience in ways that sometimes call for it. Sometimes a producer just wants to sell more downloads. But how does an actor protect themselves in these situations? Luckily, since the dawn of the #metoo movement, we have seen several positive changes in the entertainment industry to addresses all of this. And one of those changes was the introduction of the "intimacy coordinator". Today we talk to Tonia Sina, one of the pioneers of this new position and founder of Intimacy Directors International. She and her current organization, Intimacy Directors and Coordinators, have been pioneering the best practices for performed intimacy, simulated sex and nudity for theatre, live performance, tv and film. They aspire to create safe and harm-free environments for the production of intimate scenes.

Life in 2020 has been quite the readjustment for most people. Students have had to become homeschooled, working from home is the norm, and just when you think quarantine life is over, Covid pops it's frustrating head back up and we have to readjust again.

But what's it like to be an active band right now? You can't have live shows really. Venues aren't really booking anywhere. So what are musicians supposed to do?

The Imaginaries are an OKC-based folk duet that have been on the front lines of creating a new normal for artists. We're back with a whole new season! Today we talk to an incredible known name in the OKC hip-hop scene, Jabee. Jabee is a rapper from Oklahoma City whose music, according to Chuck D. from Public Enemy, “has the potential to change the world.”

His most recent album is Black Future, released in August 2016 with a 4,000-seat sold out show at The Criterion in Oklahoma City. The album reached #25 on iTunes. “Monument,” a track from the album feat. Chuck D., premiered on Billboard, and another track, “By Any Means,” premiered on Mass Appeal. 

Jabee has toured with Run the Jewels (Killer Mike and El-P) and Murs, and has been featured on Sway in the Morning, MTV, XXL, Complex, The Source and Vibe. He has also performed at Kevin Durant’s celebrity basketball game and Russell Westbrook’s celebrity comedy show.

He released his first full-length album, Blood is the New Black, in 2008, co-produced by DJ Vadim, and the following year linked with DJs Mick Boogie and Terry Urban to record a mixtape called Must Be Nice. In 2011, Jabee partnered with DJBooth.net and IMKING clothing to produce the Lucky Me EP, featuring Carlitta Durand.

In 2013, his second full-length album, Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt, recorded under the guidance of hip-hop legend Murs debuted at #50 on iTunes. A track from the album, “Stephanie (Super Ugly),” was produced by El-P.

Jabee received the Oklahoma Gazette’s Woody Award for Best Hip Hop in 2007 and 2009, the Oklahoma Street Music Award for Album of the Year (Blood is the New Black) in 2009, and in 2010 was recognized by URB magazine as an Artist to Watch.

Musical improv is seriously one of the most baffling things I've ever seen. Whether it's your favorite rapper freestyling or Wayne Brady pulling out a full on song from thin air, improvising lyrics, melodies, and harmonies takes some serious skill.

Have you ever been watching The Hunger Games while flipping through dinosaur pics on your phone and thought to yourself, "what if these games were jurassic"? Well Ryan Bellgardt and his team over at Boiling Point Media has done just that. Imagine if Ready Player One and the Matrix made sweet love with The Hunger Games and Jurassic Park in one night of passionate craziness. Well that would give you The Jurassic Games. It's feature film numero tres for the Boiling Point kids, following Army of Frankensteins and Gremlin, and they are not losing any steam any time. In fact they're already halfway through production on their fourth movie. Good lord! 

Travel back in time with me to about a year ago. I was fortunate enough to be performing my duties of sound mixer/boom operator on Jurassic Games, and we found ourselves on a rain delay during one of our production days way out in Robber's Cave, Oklahoma. So while we waited for tornado alley's lovely storm season to calm itself down, we piled into the mess hall of our camp site and decided to have a little fun.

Its a surreal experience to grow up listening to stories like these, and now being able to have stories of my own time on these many sets to share with him. There is something very special about that. That being said, my stories will probably never hold a candle to what he has to share. 

Hurley started his time at a young age just out of high school working horses on various sets. He eventually found himself working with the likes of Glenn Randall and his son Glenn Randall Jr. You may know the Jr. as the stunt coordinator for films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Return of the Jedi, and the stunt double for freaking Boba Fett. Hurley was a wrangler on all sorts of classic western movies and TV shows such as Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Magnificent 7, and the list goes on and on. 

Hurley was a horse wrangler. He wasn't a director or an actor or any position that we all like to fall head over heels for. But it's important to remember that behind every famous director/actor/producer/so on is a team of highly skilled professionals that put blood, sweat, and tears into their work so that the bigger picture will shine. My grandpa was a small piece in Hollywood history. You won't find him on IMDB, because unfortunately alot of these folks don't get the credit that they deserve. But maybe we can change that. I hope you enjoy his stories and insight as much as I have over the years.

Resonate, a campaign Gaither started in September 2016, to empower artists through cooperation and shared belief, is as she describes, “an initiative pursuing relationship with God as a Creator in order to develop excellence in our mirroring creativity, that the beauty of God would revive the heart of man.” Gaither also initiated Resonate as a road map for musicians and creative people to build communities of artistry and faith in her hometown of Oklahoma City.

“I want to invest in my city and I want to bring people together and that’s where Resonate formed,” Gaither said. “Resonate is a community that supports and encourages artists of faith. If you are of the Christian faith, then you believe in a creative God, and the art that you create is the result of that theology of creativity and builds on that belief and faith.”

To test her hypothesis and challenge her notions of how an album should be made, Gaither set her Resonate campaign into motion with Vanity. She established a set of parameters, working with 10 producers in 10 months on 10 separate songs. The results dramatically expanded Gaither’s musical vocabulary and built lasting relationships with the 10 Oklahoma City area producers who lent their distinctive sounds to Vanity.

“It takes so much energy to create an album that you have to want to make that album more than you want to breathe,” Gaither said. “I believe that through increased mentorship and a cooperation, we can all learn to breathe life and love and faith into our art together.”

Nghiem tackles the everyday and the almost-never with sharp wit. Filled with non sequitur logic, the seemingly random events that comprise his act portray the world in a very unique light. He has also cast major commercial projects for some of the most recognized brands in the world.

 His full-time, full-service studio The Actor Factory in Norman, Oklahoma boasts the largest and most-accessible casting room in the state. It is seconds from I-35, 15 minutes from downtown Oklahoma City and 2 1/2 hours from downtown Dallas.

 He is skilled at principal casting and extras casting, has negotiated SAG-AFTRA contracts and deals on every agreement level from Oklahoma to Los Angeles and New York, and has experience hosting open calls for extras in several cities in the U.S., processing and logging as many as 3,500 people in one day.

 Freihofer has years of experience in front of the camera, too. As a principal actor, he has appeared in motion pictures with Academy Award-winning directors, television on all three networks (including a recurring role on the hit series Breaking Bad) and national commercials, while being an active member of the Screen Actors Guild. In today's episode Brian sits down with the producers and actors of Army of Frankensteins. AoF has seen lots of success both in film festivals and in distribution abroad.
