We suggest:

Having scented candles / diffusers to fragrance the venue and set a scented theme for your wedding which guests will always remember.

Name tables after your favourite fragrances and have themed decor / floral displays on each, or simply have that scent on a display as the table’s central focus, with decants or mini samples of the scent for guests to take away.

Purchase mini ceramic discs from a craft shop, having ribbons printed with your names & the date of the wedding, and having them on place settings or piled near the perfume display. Then, inviting guests to spray their discs with a chosen scent to remind them of the celebrations.

One listener recently wrote in with a specific question about layering options throughout the day (and into the evening); but before we get to that, we go back to basics and tell you ALL the things you need to know about layering (without overwhelming yourself or others!) in an easy how-to guide…

First: Decide what you are layering for. To make a scent last longer? Or so you can add more nuance / alter an aspect you’re not as fond of (eg you want to make it sweeter, or cut through the sweetness)? Or perhaps to carry a daytime scent through to more a sultry evening vibe?

The best way to begin layering is to practice with an existing fragrance you wish had more oomph: Start by selecting a scent you like a lot but wish could last even longer / add more character to.

Then, before you spray a single drop…

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Particularly in warmer climates. Nothing makes fragrance disappear more quickly than dry skin. Try using a matching body lotion or oil to your fragrance (many have matching products like shower gels as well – the more layers of the scent the better!) Aroma molecules evaporate far slower on well-hydrated skin.

For the truly devoted, layering with matching scented body products can create a beautifully nuanced aroma.

Try also spraying the scent into your hair, so it wafts around you all day. Hair doesn’t heat up as much as skin, and will absorb the smell more deeply. It also billows beguiling around you all day if you have longer hair. Do a patch test, first, to ensure the fragrance doesn’t discolour your hair (spray on a tissue to be sure!) Be on the lookout for matching hair mists to your favourite perfume - increasing numbers of brands do these, now.

Next: add a body mist (again, a huge number of fragrance houses releasing these versions of beloved favourites).

Now: Spray your fragrance. This can be done immediately or, if you just want the subtlety of the mist to breathe on its own for the morning, you can carry a travel bottle or decant of an eau de toilette or eau de parfum to top up layer in the day.

Suzy’s top tip is to spray a scarf (or jacket lining) with your chosen scent, as fragrance lasts way longer on fabric (like hair, it’s more porous and doesn’t heat up as much as skin, the aroma molecules don’t evaporate as quickly).

If you’re wanting to increase the longevity of a perfume that’s proving to be annoyingly fleeting, you may also add an ‘amplifier’ or fragrance booster. Several of these are available, but some of the best known ones are:

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01: Primarily Iso E Super, which gives a velvety, cedarwood skin-like scent that boosts longevity and creates a personal musky aroma.

Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume: A minimalist scent featuring cetalox, making it a popular choice for adding a cleaner, soft white musky enhancement.

If you’re wanting to change the character of a scent or add depth to it, consider these options…

If it’s too sweet:

Look for another scent in your collection (or to add one) that has dominant citrus notes like bergamot, neroli, mandarin, lemon, lime or ‘green’ notes such as galbanum, tomato or violet leaf, green tea, marine/aquatic accords (synthetic recreations of sea-like, watery smells) and aldehydes (often described as being like Champagne bubbles).

To soften more aggressive scent:

Vanilla and tonka bean can ’round’ a perfume, making it swoon on your skin (and addictive to smell), as can touches of synthetic notes described as ‘caramel’ or ‘dulce de leche’, ripe fruits, chocolate or even candy floss. For a smoother, woodier sheen to a scent, add a sandalwood-rich or cashmere/powdery scent on top. These notes feel cocooning, adding a layer of soft comfort to spikier ingredients.

If you want to add several layers of differing scents - build your bespoke scent as a perfumer would a formula: from the base (heavier notes like resins, woods and strong spices) through florals / fruity notes, to top (lighter) notes like citrus / grassy / green aromas.

Try to add less than you think you need, as adding more is always easier than taking away, and a little of these can go a long way!

Layering from day to evening:

Consider boosting the base notes of the scent you’re wearing – these tend to be the last to linger on your skin, being made of heavier molecules, and are likely to include ingredients such as patchouli, labdanum, olibanum, vetiver, woods or musk. Or pick out a spicy note for extra sizzle!

Also think about investing in a stronger version of your scent – an eau de parfum, if you use the eau de toilette; or an extrait or pure parfum if you have the edp. Do try these on skin first (separately) though, as often these intensified versions add other ‘guest’ ingredients, rather than just being stringer. Also be aware pure parfum / perfume oils / attars while lasting longer on skin, tend not to project as much - so they’re more intimate and others have to be in close proximity to smell them on you.

I would love to hear suggestions and ideas for day to night fragrances or better yet, fragrance layering. Here’s what I mean: every year I attend a three-day conference (military expo) for work. I spend all day meeting people, making connections for future articles for the magazine I edit, and podcasting from the convention center floor. So I’m in close quarters and don’t want to overwhelm everyone with my perfume. On the second night there’s a black-tie gala but I’m always in a rush to get ready.

So I’ve been trying to think of day to night layering. The only thing I came up with was Jo Malone London Poppy & Barley for day with Jo Malone London Scarlett Poppy for the gala.

(The wonderful thing about fragrance is there is no right or wrong: if you like something, then it’s right. If you don’t, you can wash it off. It’s not a tattoo after all.)

The OG Shalimar can feel too heavy on hotter days, but I still crave it. I’ve found layering with White Peaches cuts through the deeper, resinous ambery layers and makes it fizz - adding an effervescence like fresh peach juice in Champagne that bubbles through the more syrupy / darker vanilla base of Shalimar.

Parfums de Marly Valaya + Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur

Valaya was inspired by the feel of cotton on skin, giving a "clean," radiant aroma of freshly laundered clothing or fluffy towels with notes of white peach, bergamot, orange blossom, musk, and Ambrofix. Despite being so breezy, it has high longevity but still with that airy feel, and a powdery, fresh character. Sometimes if I want to coax the more comforting side of the Frederic Malle, I feel the powdery airiness of Valaya tames the wolfishness of Musk Ravageur’s darker, naughtier muskiness.

Why is incense so popular again? 

Incense has moved from temples and churches into living rooms,

studios and perfume wardrobes; it’s become a chic, modern ritual as

much as a smell.

Trend reports link the boom to the hunger for spiritual and holistic

practices – incense is an easy way to pause, “set an intention” and

create a little ceremony around everyday life.

Incense vs frankincense

 “Incense” is the whole blend you burn – it might be on a stick, cone, coil

or rope – and can contain resins, woods, herbs, spices and florals.

 “Frankincense” (also called olibanum) is one particular resin, tapped

from Boswellia sacra trees in Oman, Yemen and parts of the Horn of

Africa.

 Etymology you can play with: “frankincense” comes from Old French

“franc encens” – high quality or “pure” incense – while “incense” itself

goes back to Latin for “to burn.”

 When a perfume lists “incense” as a note, it may mean a full accord of

resins (frankincense, myrrh, opoponax, labdanum, elemi, woods,

flowers) or a composition that highlights frankincense alone.

What incense actually smells like

 Frankincense: resinous yet airy; earthy, piney, slightly smoky with a

surprising citrus brightness.

 Myrrh: darker, spicier, slightly medicinal and very “churchy”, often

associated with ritual and antiquity.

 Opoponax: honeyed, vanillic, balsamic and comforting – it softens the

harsher edges of smoke.

 Labdanum: rich, ambery, leathery and almost animalic; gives incense

perfumes that plush, warm body.

 Elemi: sharp, lemony, peppery resin that brings sparkle and lift to the

smoke.

 Woods (sandalwood, cedar etc.): add dryness, creaminess or

pencilshaving smokiness and form the backbone of many incenseheavy

fragrances.

Quotes from perfumers:

 Francis Kurkdjian on why he loves Japanese incense at home: partly

practicality, because “it fills the room in five minutes, whereas candles

take ages.”

 Yasmin Sewell on the moodshift: “Where a candle may take twenty

minutes to resonate in your space, when you light incense there is an

immediate scent that fills the room.”

 Sewell again on why incense made more sense than candles for her

brand’s next step: “I felt that incense really connected with our values,

since it’s been used in spiritual rituals for so long,” and “what I really

love about incense is that it shifts the mood instantly.”

 Lyn Harris on her daily ritual: “It sets a spiritual tone to my day,” and

incense is “an ethereal veil that lingers in the air.” She burns it in the

morning to set her mood, sometimes midday to reinvigorate her senses,

and even before bed so “there is a sensual haze passing over my

nostrils before I sleep.”

 Chris Rusak on the psychology of burning it: incense is “a great vehicle

for empowerment or catharsis via controlled destruction” and “incense

use is intentional. It requires fire or directed heat for full expression,

which we must effect, contain, and control, in order to destroy it but not

ourselves.”

 How it’s harvested: frankincense resin oozes from cuts in the

Boswellia sacra tree and dries into golden “tears”, sometimes called

“frankincense tears” or “olibanum tears”.

 The jinn love story: a girl from the jinn falls in love with a human boy –

forbidden, of course. As punishment she’s turned into a tree; her grief

becomes crystal tears that people burn on coal for healing smoke with a

bitter taste that mourns lost love.

 Ecology: frankincense forests in northern Ethiopia are under threat as

they’re cleared for agriculture, with scientists warning production could

halve over the next 15 years.

 Mood altering science: frankincense contains a compound called

incensole acetate, which has been shown to have pain relieving and

psychoactive effects – helping with depression and anxiety and

activating a warmth perception channel in the skin.

 That might explain why those “sexy church smells” (as Alice du Parcq

so memorably terms them) can feel both spiritually elevated and

physically comforting – sacred, nostalgic, a bit forbidden and strangely

swoony all at once.

Attending the @nicheshow in London was fascinating - some really interesting new brands there. SO many fragrances smelled, which Suzy will catch up with next time. But two of the standouts were…

In this episode we get to know the incredible Craig Andrade at one of our favourite fragrance stores @bloomperfumery . Craig is the founder of niche fragrance brand @the_rac_on_teur  and his story is both emotional and inspiring.

During the episode we learn about the moment in his life that changed everything and took him from being a lawyer in a high-stress environment to being totally immersed in the world of fragrance to the point that he enrolled himself into the Grasse Institute and started his journey as a perfumer and brand founder.

Craig's brand is astonishing in a number of ways. Not only does he bring little known Australian botanicals to the fore and give them a beautiful spotlight, but there is a wonderful sense of humour and irreverence. (Craig injects so much of his amazing personality into the brand).

 Ms. Macadamia — Bold and free-spirited, a scent I designed as a tribute to all the women in my life: Australia’s native macadamia nut, native golden wattle, precious orris root and sultry smokey peach.

 Lord Lamington — A classic cologne, laced with ambition and a slice of Australia’s cocoa-dipped nostalgic cake. For those who want to have their cake and eat it. 

 Daintree Rain Tea — A meditative scent inspired by Australia’s ancient Daintree Rainforest. Rain, tea and rare blue lotus in quiet communion.

Suzy’s fragrant adventures continued at a @nissaba.fragrances Masterclass @jovoymayfair with Sébastien Tissot. Nicola’s go-to is @kilianparis Midnight in Heaven – luscious mango, rice pudding, suncream and pure holiday bliss.

We got to try @grove_england Anemone eau de parfum / Hand Cream, founded by Laura Butler - Madden. Chamomile, jasmine, neroli and cedarwood create a fragrance that’s both nostalgic and modern, inspired by the myth of Aphrodite and Adonis.

Suzy is also hugely excited for the new @adidasoriginals @adidasuk Vibes fragrances – fusing neuroscience and scent, created by top perfumers and brilliantly affordable. It's particularly mercurial: on Suzy it's ultra green, then cold, metallic and silvery, creamy and addictive; on @blublazerguy it was coconutty, while on @morebrandscents the intriguing paprika pepperiness really came through, so you need to try it on your own skin!

Meanwhile, Nicola’s been delighted about @debenhams upping their fragrance game with niche and heritage brands, including @bastilleparfums Un Deux Trous Soleil (childhood-evoking via sunshine and play dough!), @houbigant_parfum Quelque Fleur (vintage bouquet), and @molinardparfums Molinard de Molinard (70s chic).

@memo.paris takes us on two fragrant journeys: Portobello Road with its myrtle, rose and rain accord that Suzy's been editing on her skin, and Ithaque - an escape to the mythical Greek island with cedar, bergamot and blackcurrant.

Another tuberose that captured Suzy's heart is @manosgerakinis Wild Tuberose - green yet buttery, slightly salty and totally addictive with bergamot, jasmine and woods.

Nicola's fallen for @narcisorodriguezofficial For Her Intense with its vetiver/amber trail, juicy peach and white florals, while we were both surprised by @zadigetvoltaire ZADIG's billowing orange blossom, toasty sesame, fiery ginger and sandalwood.

Suzy's also raving about @thomasdemonaco collection at @lessenteurs, featuring Sol Salgado (sun-kissed skin with salt and linden), Fuego Futuro (a shamanic journey of smoke and incense), and Raw Gold (desire with davana, suede and vanilla).

Arkive Dry Shampoo The Reset (limited edition in Decorated Woods fragrance). We adore the so-affordable but utterly gorgeous Arkive fragrances, and Suzy was particularly excited to buy this dry shampoo scented with her favourite of the perfumes. 

We were invited to An Ormonde Jayne Mothers Day event at their London boutique. celebrate our mums, and help them choose a fragrance. Nicola’s mum chose a set of travel sizes, as she fell in love with so many. Suzy’s mum wasn’t mobile enough to attend in person, but chose Ta’if, as she felt the description matched her personality (and it’s now her favourite!). Suzy chose Levant for its sunny, radiant optimism. Nicola has fallen for the subtle charms of Xian. 

Suzy has her hands on a bottle of the gorgeous new Memo Portobello Road fragrance and teases with a description she’ll continue in the next episode, along with a hint of their next fragrance, which beckons a Greek sun-drenched island (yes please!) More to be revealed next time…

First up is Emsy, seeking a fragrance for a transformative period in life while dealing with chronic pain and preparing for an exciting theatre production. For under £100, we suggested @ruthmastenbroekperfume Dagian with its refreshing lime, mint and orange blossom notes, @experimentalperfumeclub Bergamot Incense which brings complexity to this radiant citrus, and @joloves Pomelo Oud.

Then Cemile, writing a masters thesis on Circe, needed a scent embodying this witch goddess's duality of savagery and elegance. We prescribed @paul_schutze Tears of Eros, a narcotic green incense rich with resins, @mapoftheheart Purple Heart V.5 with its dark heart of salty liquorice and purple rose, and @montblanc Patchouli Ink which perfectly melds ink, paper and passion.

For Stephen, a tattoo artist working in close proximity with clients, we recommended @akrofragrances Ink with its notes of black ink, tar and vetiver, Gri Gri Tara Mantra (the eau de parfum for tattooed skin!), @vyraoworld Witchy Woo, and @beaufortlondon Coeur de Noir with its dominating ink accords.

Finally, Grace is expecting a baby in May and wanted a soothing yet distinctive scent for labour. We suggested @e11evenfragrance Perfume Oil with its floral geranium and rose notes, @moltonbrown Reviving Rosemary, and @ilapothecary's aroma rollers.
