This Summer, Skateistan and Women Win hosted the 2024 ROLL Models Leadership Camp in Paris and Manx skateboarder Ali Mellor was there to represent the Isle of Man.

Ali , from Gal Skate, was in attendance along with 20 other women and non-binary social skateboarding leaders, from 10 countries across Europe.

The camp aims to create a safe space for skaters to share their stories, make connections, acquire new knowledge and boost their confidence.

It's part of an initiative from the Goodpush Alliance which aims to support and share knowledge among social skateboarding projects worldwide.

September is World Dementia Awareness Month and to mark it, two local charities have combined forces to provide support and information for Dementia Awareness week.

Claire Cubberly from Alzheimer's Society Isle of Man and Jeanette Hogg, a Hospice Admiral Nurse from Forget Me Not, tell us about their charities.

Forget Me Not Admiral Nurses will be joining up with partners from Manx Care, Manx Decaf, the Alzheimer's Society and other third sector partners, for a number of dementia awareness events through the week of 23 September. If you're worried about dementia, or caring for someone with dementia, and want more information, representatives from these groups will be in the Strand Shopping Centre on Friday 27th September from 11am until 3pm.

Ruth Cowin and a vintage bike with an important message

A rare bike which won the 1923 Senior TT will be displayed on Sunday in Douglas. It was ridden by Tom Sheard, who was the first Manxman to win a TT race the previous year.

Tom's granddaughter lost her son Daniel to bowel cancer shortly after this year's TT races and she has decided to put her grandfather’s bike on display to help raise awareness of the condition.

She's been speaking to Manx Radio's William King about Daniel, the bike and her grandfather Tom.

NB: The bike will be on display from 10:30am-3pm on Sunday (25th August) at IOM Trike Tours on Castle Mona Avenue in Douglas.

All At Sea with Mine's A Shanty

It might be a beautiful sunny day on the tiny Isle with only light winds and rippling waves, but we know only too well how that weather – and those conditions - can change within moments.

And it’s at times like this that our wonderful lifeboat volunteers are on guard, ready to drop everything at all hours of the day or night and leap to our aid on the high seas should we need it.

With the Island being the birthplace of the RNLI, it’s apt that an exhibition marking the 200th anniversary of the organisation has opened at the House of Manannan - and it includes a gold medal awarded to Manx resident Sir William Hillary who founded the charity.

MNH's Curator of Archaeology Alison Fox told our Howard Caine that it's an honour to have the artefact on display as part of their 'All At Sea' exhibition.

*The music around this piece is the Mine's a Shanty crew, singing their original composition 'the Lifeboat Song', recorded live in St Thomas's Church earlier this year. Our charity for Learning Disabilities Week has been Manx Mencap.

Christy chats with Kelly Quaye and Jacquie Dawson about some of the plans organised by the charity to mark the week itself, also the ongoing activities available to service users and families and fundraising; they also chat about Expedition Limitless, a group of adventurous souls who came together with one aim - to raise a staggering £100,000 for Manx Mencap in June 2024!

As part of their goal, 12 of those individuals successfully completed a 715km canoe trip on the mighty Yukon river; Christy was able to ask Jacquie and Kelly what something like this means to the charity and what a difference it will make.

56 hardy Manxies braved it for Breast Cancer Now at the weekend, taking part in the charity's annual sleepover.

Previously taking place on the summit of Snaefell, this time they opted for Peel Castle. The aim of the event is to raise money for vital research into cancers so that by the year 2050 everyone who develops the disease will live and live well. Sadly, the weather was against them!

But it didn't put them off. And our Christy stopped by to check in on proceedings (before she went home to her own bed and a warming cup of cocoa... lightweight!

KATIE'S MISSION TO NAME A PUP

Almost 2 million people in the UK are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives. Of those, around 180,000 rarely leave their homes alone and lead lonely, isolated lives. Our Charity of the Week, Guide Dogs, works for a world where people with sight loss are never left out of life, for a world where being blind or partially sighted is not what defines you.

14 yr old Katie Jacobs has been supporting the charity for some time already and, on Saturday 13th April 2024 from 10.00am-12.00pm, Katie is hosting a Coffee Morning in Aid of Guide Dogs - in hope of raising £2500.00 to name one of the Guide Dog Puppies.

Those local to the Isle of Man are welcome to come along to the Coffee Morning at Sight Matters, Heywood Avenue, Onchan and support Katie and Guide Dogs UK, but if you're unable to attend in person and would like to donate, any contributions can be made via the JustGiving page .

Kian Morris started attending Isle of Play's Lester Yard facility in 2019. Now 14, he helps the team out, guiding and encouraging younger kids to make the most of the services the charity has to offer.

Young Singer of Mann 2024

Almost 50 young people, from the age of 7 through to 17, took part in the Young Singer of Mann Competition at the Erin Arts Centre this weekend. Introduced by organiser Pip Rolfe, each competitor sang two short pieces of their own choosing and all were accompanied live by Madeleine Kelly.

Christy was on the panel again, so took the opportunity to record some chat with her fellow Judges - and also caught up with the winners from both Saturday’s Junior heat (Aalish Kilgallon) and Sunday’s Senior winner (Orry Wilson).

Outlier Distilling Company say they are 'looking to do things differently from the mass market' and it seems the passion and determination of the tiny team has served them well in the short time they’ve been operating.

For the two main men behind the label, Ian Warborn-Jones and Rick Dacey, proof came in the past few weeks when bottles of their rum started appearing on the shelves of Harrods no less... In a little under three years, they've gone from renovating an old milk shed to having Hoolie Manx rum on the shelves of arguably the most famous shop in the world. But how did they get here? Sandra's Frontline fundraising walk

Sandra Smith has made it her mission over the past 12 years to raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund, which supports soldiers, past and present and their families, for life.

Looking ahead to Mothering Sunday, Christy and Chris popped in to Bunscoill Ghaelgagh in St John's and Onchan Primary School, to ask some of the children there what the best thing about their Mums is - in both Manx and English.

Team Zebra and their cardboard fuel bricks

Christy meets the young entrepreneurs from Ramsey Grammar School who've linked up with Isle of Man Live at Home Schemes Northern Men in Sheds for their Junior Achievement Isle of Man project.

'Team Zebra' are making fuel bricks out of wasted cardboard to help provide an energy source for the Island's vulnerable, including those who use Isle of Man Foodbank

Introducing "Creeaght"

Getting an insight into – and sneak preview of - Isla Callister's traditional music composition which celebrates the role women have played in Manx history. 'Creeaght', which means 'Courage' in Manx, was launched as part of Yn Chrunniaght last year.

Today, to celebrate International Women's Day 2023, Culture Vannin has released a video of the event - which you can watch in full here.

The suite of music was performed by an all women-identifying ensemble and featured artwork by award-winning Manx illustrator Jo Davies, who has bought the stories of these women to life through her illustrations.

Young Manx Ramblers ready to get going

A new rambling group has been gathering pace, with an inaugural walk set to take place on April 2nd. But this is a walking group with a difference – it’s strictly for Young People. And it’s refreshing to find out that the interest in this group has been considerable!
