Today we talk about bread and why you should be making it tips and tricks we have learned in our kitchen and where you should start. (Bread recipe below)

Rosemary Garlic Focaccia Bread recipe:

• 1 head of minced garlic
• several sprigs of fresh rosemary
• 1 tsp black pepper
• 1 cup of olive oil
• 2 cups of warm water
• 1 tbsp of yeast
• 4 tbsp of honey
• 1 tsp of salt
• 5-6 cups of flour

First take your rosemary, garlic and oil and infuse your oil over low heat for about 5 min. Add in your pepper and other herbs you like, like basil. Remove from heat and set aside. In a large mixing bowl add your warm water, yeast and honey. Stir to mix the honey and then let sit for about 5-10 min until mixture is frothy. Add in 1/2 cup of infused oil, 2 cups of flour and salt and mix well. add the rest of your flour a cup at a time until you have a nice dough ball. Remove from ball and knead dough for about 5-10 min until its nice and smooth. Add some of your infused oil to coat a clean bowl before placing your dough ball in the bowl. Cover with a tea towel and place in a warm spot of your kitchen for about an hour or until the dough ball has doubled in size. Once its done rising, knock the air out of your dough ball and press dough down into a large greased baking pan with sides (Grease baking sheet with a little of your infused oil). Generously brush the top of your bread with more oil and use your fingertips to dimple the top of your bread. Cover and let rise another 20-30min. set your oven to 350f, after its second rise put bread in the preheated oven for about 25-30 min.

Enjoy with some balsamic vinegar!!

We both milk Nigerian Dwarf goats, settling on that breed of goat after years of trial and error with other breeds. (The trial and error was simply attempting to find a breed of goat who produced milk that our kids would be happy about drinking….We know, we know, we have no spines) ;)

When you think homesteading preservation, what’s the first think that comes to mind?

Most people think canning.

While canning is great (even though Cheri avoids it like the plague) ;), there are soooooo many different ways to preserve food, herbs, flowers and more!

In this episode we talk all about the many methods of preservation. Most are so easy!

A quick fix like Tylenol or Ibuprofen is definitely convenient and easy but can come with pretty severe side effects.

So, what are natural ways to relieve “normal” aches and pains?

Especially in a homestead environment, shit is gonna happen a lot more frequently..... And I don't mean the literal shit that your animals so graciously leave all over your land. ;)

I'm talkin' random accidents that result in injury.

Before we get into the fun stuff, Our Unusual Animal of The Week!!

• Here's your hint: These animals can fill in for THREE different functions around your homestead. A triple purpose animal! And I want several!!

On a homestead, we're always busy outside. And busier will always = MORE of everything, including accidents and injuries unfortunately.

And while we could never avoid falls, scrapes, burns and breaks all together, if you're prepared, it's a whole lot f@#%ing easier.

Injuries to you or a loved one or even a random person can be TERRYFING, but if you're prepared with a ginormous medical kit (yup, ginormous it must be to hold everything you'll need, trust me), you're gonna feel a whole f%#@ lot better about the situation and might even look less like a chicken with your head cut off. ;) Maybe.

And, of course, you can count on a shit ton of laughs and some unreal stories!!

Depending on the generation, and how closely your parents wanted to conform with society, you may or may not have been subjected to things like :

• Cheese Whiz......not familiar with it? That's awesome for you and you're definitely a healthier person for it. ;) Still want to know what it is??......Here's a hint: I know it says "cheese", but this shit comes out of a can and you'll find it on the SHELF at a grocery store. Yup. And in our youth, we ate this canned "cheese" like it was going out of style. ;)
• Corn Syrup and Canned Milk for infants instead of nursing......Not our generation, but our parents....yup, that's what they gave their babies for food. Good ole' high fructose corn syrup and canned milk mixed into a bottle. Yummy, right? Poor babies!! And all because nursing was considered taboo.

These are just two examples of what screwed up shit parents thought was acceptable back then because, "They Didn't Know!!"

We are always so grateful to our husbands and the rest of our families for helping out as much as they do (takes a village, right??!!), and on the flip side it feels damn good to just get shit done all on our own. ;)

While some projects on your homestead are definitely a 2 person (or more! Shearing unruly alpacas anyone???) kinda job, there are 100% some projects when you can "Do It Your Damn Self!" And we LOVE those kinds of projects!

Completing a task all on your own is a great feeling!

Since winter is almost upon us (here in Northern Cali we've already had several rain storms!), we thought it was the perfect time to chat about how to best take advantage of these winter months.

Fist off, The Unusual Animal of the Week!!

• Here's your hint: These guys are NOT mammals and they can have a lifespan of up to 20 years!!

I know, I know!!.....What could that possibly be?!?! Listen to the episode to find out!! ;)

Our bullet points for this gab fest.....

• Set up your day to get things done outside while it's light.....this may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised at how much the day can get away from you during inclement weather. ;)
• Pre-plan for what you're gonna do INSIDE when it's dark. For example: the other day during our morning chores, we made sure to haul several buckets of beeswax to the back door during the daylight (and rain) so that we could start the long process of cleaning it all. ;) It's something that needed done and also something that could be done inside. :) It's a win win!!
• Get into the mindset of planning ahead and remembering that less light outside means less time for chores and other outside homestead stuff. :)
• Some other ideas for things that could be done when light gets scarce : ;)

*Baking (Obvi, right?)

*Knitting, Crocheting, Sewing.....if that's your jam, plan ahead to get all your handmade stuff made after the sun goes down. :)

*Planning/Researching your Spring Garden! Always a fun past time and the perfect activity to do on a rainy evening. Mmmmm.....with a cup of hot tea in front of the fire. :)

*Soap making....takes a bit of planning aheads to enusre you have everything you need. :) Fun and useful.

*Candle making....another super useful past time. Beeswax candles anyone?

*Building in an oudoor shop or barn

There's so much more, this was just a short list to inspire. :)

The questions we most often receive are centered around chickens and specifically baby chicks. :) And we have PLENTY of knowledge on chickens in general......raising and breeding chickens for the past 25+ years, you could say we have just a bit of experience. ;)

So we thought we would go over the most commonly asked questions (and our answers!) on several chicken topics. :)

Here are the questions we answer today. :)

• How old do baby chicks have to be to free range (with and without a mommy hen)?
• Do you use a heat lamp for baby chicks?
• How do you introduce new chicks to an established flock?
• Should you leave a hen with babies with the rest of your flock?

• Themed Baskets (Tea basket, coffee basket, etc....who doesn't love themed baskets?!!?)

Sounds like an oxymoron, right?!?!

Predators aren't always what they seem. ;) Don't judge a book by it's cover, right??

In this episode, we chat about the most common predators you may see and how they can help your homestead!

• Opossum
• Skunks....these little guys have an amazing talent that should appeal to everyone!
• Predatory Wasps...sounds creepy, right? Hint: these guys are GREAT for your garden!
• Hawks
• Snakes...may seem obvious, but often times these guys are judged too harshly and not given credit for the HUGE favor they do the entire world
• Raccoons
• Mountain Lions
• Wolves
• Coyotes....most think of these guys as a menace but they are excellent hunters and take care of a very specific little mammal that no one wants too many of, especially on their homestead.
• Fox
• Cats

Definitely not always rainbows and butterflies, homesteading can be hard at times and down right defeating at other times.

In this episode, we chat about the main points (for us) which make homesteading hard...

*Deceased animals ~ First on our list for good reason. Dead animals is super sad and can make you fell like a crap-tastic homesteader. Don't beat yourself up though. Just as you will witness birth on your homestead, you'll also inevitably witness death. A somber fact. And most of the time, we have no control over this....from freak accidents to old age, dying animals will be a part of your homestead if you have animals.

• On a lighter note....mud, rain, excessive heat, basically any weather that is not moderately perfect. ;) If you've ever had to do outside chores in the rain or 110 degree weather, ya know what we're talking about!
• Not having correct tools....damn, I HATE this! Having to mend a fence and not having the proper tools is the worst!
• The endless mountain of crap you have to do on a daily basis! We want the mountain of crap, but we often hate to climb it twice per day. ;)
• Anything breaking...again, SO ANNOYING! And things always break at the most in opportune times, like when you're trying to leave for dinner out or your once per year vacation. ;)
• Animals escaping....they ruin shit and are destroyers of all things you love on your property. ;)
• Not being able to go on vacations besides once per year. It sucks.

So, even though this list is a tad long, we LOVE homesteading and we would not trade this life for anything!

No one wants to be evacuated. It's definitely no ones fav thing.

Unfortunately, sometimes evacuations are necessary.

With a homestead, evacuating because of the threat of a natural disaster can be extra stressful.

With an excess amount of animals, living far from others, etc, evacuating a homestead takes extra time and thought.
