Irene Lara-Corrales, MD is an Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of Toronto and a pediatric dermatologist at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Canada. She knew early on that pediatric dermatology was her calling, and her dedication to advancing care for children with complex skin diseases deepened after caring for an infant with epidermolysis bullosa (EB) during her residency in Costa Rica. Most recently, Dr. Lara-Corrales has been a leading champion for hidradenitis suppurativa within PeDRA and across the broader pediatric dermatology research community. At the time of this interview in 2021, Dr. Carrie Coughlin was an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She was also the Chair of the PeDRA Outcomes Committee, a member of the Meetings and Studies Committees, and led the Skin Tumors and Reactions to Cancer Therapies (STARC) Focused Study Group. Since then, she has become an Associate Professor of Dermatology and is serving as the Treasurer for PeDRA's Board of Directors.

In this episode, Dr. Coughlin shares insights into her work, her leadership within PeDRA, and why effectively communicating pediatric dermatology research beyond the specialty is essential for advancing patient care and collaboration.

Colleen Cotton, MD is a Pediatric Dermatologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Cotton joined PeDRA as a research fellow in 2013 and was one of the first PeDRA Fellows. She now serves on PeDRA's Early Investigator and Meetings Committees, as well as a participant in PeDRA’s Mentorship Program as both a mentor and mentee. She always knew she wanted to be a pediatric dermatologist, and her interest in epidermolysis bullosa (EB) grew deeper after treating a young baby with EB during her residency in Costa Rica. Most recently, she’s been championing Hidradenitis Suppurativa within PeDRA and the greater pediatric dermatology research community. PeDRA had the privilege of attending the Symposium on Hidradenitis Suppurativa Advances (SHSA) in Phoenix, AZ in October 2023. During the meeting, PeDRA’s Associate Director of Educational Programs interviewed three amazing presenters to discuss the incredible work being done in this space. First up is Lynn Petukhova, PhD, discussing her ground-breaking work in Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) genetics and how she harnesses the power of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Following this, you’ll gain insight into more HS research through two poster interviews with MD candidates Nicholas Chiang and Sydney Dong, respectively. In part two of our Community Spotlight podcast featuring the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types (FIRST) you’ll hear from the Cina Family as they discuss the important role patient advocacy organizations play in supporting families. Sean and Jolie Cina have two children with ichthyosis – Portia (16) and Miles (12), and found FIRST shortly after Portia was born and diagnosed. Now, 16 years later, the family is more involved than ever with the FIRST community. Inspired by her own condition, Portia created and produced a documentary about living with ichthyosis, called Beneath the Skin (you can watch this and other related videos on Portia’s YouTube Channel here). Diana Zarowin is a fourth-year medical student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. From the moment she joined PeDRA, Diana hit the ground running, participating in Focused Study Groups, applying for the PeDRA Mentorship Program, attending the PeDRA Annual Conference, and working with her mentors to prepare successful grant and fellowship applications. To date, she is the recipient of an Emerging Investigator Research Grant under the mentorship of Dr. Britt Craiglow and a PeDRA Research Fellowship award with Dr. James Treat. Most recently, she joined forces with Mattel to champion the Barbie Like Me campaign, putting dermatology-represented Barbies into the hands of young patients. Bella Plumptre, MD is in her final year of dermatology residency at the University of Massachusetts.
