Ukpo’s authoritative work The Forgotten Genocide on the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970) is deeply rooted in her personal experience of the conflict and her subsequent academic career dedicated to understanding large-scale trauma. Born in Owerri, Imo state, Nigeria, to parents who were notable pioneers in the nation’s education system, Dr. Ukpo demonstrated exceptional academic promise early on, earning a full scholarship to Owerri Girls’ Secondary School. However, this promising high school education was directly interrupted by the outbreak of the Nigeria-Biafra War, a period of massive geopolitical trauma that raged from 1967 to 1970.

Brayden Werschmidt, a compassionate 13-year-old, celebrated his Bar Mitzvah with an inspiring Bar Mitzvah project that not only honored the memory of a my son, Blaze Bernstein but also took a firm stand against bullying. Brayden's story is one of proactive kindness and a desire to create a more inclusive world.

Touched by the life and tragic passing of Blaze, whom he knew from religious school at University Synagogue, Brayden dedicated his Bar Mitzvah project to the Blaze Bernstein Memorial Fund. With a creative and engaging approach, he raised $300 for the "Blaze It Forward" initiative by selling river rocks to children, which they then had the opportunity to paint. These colorful symbols of hope and community were later placed in the rock garden at Borrego Park in Foothill Ranch during a community cleanup event.

Brayden's commitment to making a positive impact extends beyond his successful fundraising efforts and from his own experiences with bullying in elementary school. Determined to prevent other children from enduring similar pain, he has developed a slideshow that educates his peers on the crucial distinction between being a bystander and an "upstander." Jojo Savea is a Deaf Samoan woman, content creator, and social media services provider. She focuses on storytelling, culture, and authenticity in her work. Having moved frequently throughout her life, she learned to adapt while staying grounded in her identity. Our interview takes place on Zoom to accommodate her ASL interpreter and features an entertaining twist in the video version of our interview found here on YouTube. It was really fun to interview Savea because I have never had to use an interpreter before in my interviews and it gave me an opportunity to learn how Jojo and others that are deaf, manage in this complicated hearing world.

Savea has over a decade of experience in social media, having started in Australia during college. Savea's unique perspective, stemming from her experiences as a Deaf Samoan woman, informs her intentional and heartfelt approach to content creation. She is known for building her audience by being real and engaging with her community. She has also been involved in projects like "Sign It! American Sign Language Made Easy." Learn more about the deaf community and how “normal” Jojo’s life truly is - she is married to a hearing man, travels extensively, and never lets being deaf make life less meaningful.

PeppTalks with Jeanne Pepper Ep 218 Regan Philliips CEO of CASA Orange County

Regan first became involved with CASA in 2001 while living in New York City and studying at Columbia. She completed a one-year internship with CASA-NYC, launching her career advocating for children in the dependency system. While in law school, Regan worked as an investigator for the Law Office of Harold LaFlamme. The law firm contracted with Orange County to provide legal representation–minor’s counsel–for children in foster care. She was a member of her law school’s Moot Court Honors Board, president of the Alternate Dispute Resolution Board and completed a semester-long internship with Justice Richard M. Aronson of the California Court of Appeal, Fourth District, Division Three. She also met her husband at Chapman Law; they married shortly after graduating together in 2005. Upon receiving her Juris Doctor and passing the California Bar Examination, Regan was promoted from investigator to attorney for the Law Office of Harold LaFlamme. She was assigned to a trial court department at the Lamoreaux Justice Center in Orange, where she represented children in the foster care system. When a child is detained–removed from their home by a social worker because of alleged abuse, neglect, or abandonment–the child is termed a dependent of the state and is the subject of a dependency court case. The child’s fate is then primarily determined by a judicial officer based on the evidence presented in the case. The case is prosecuted by County Counsel. The child’s parents are entitled to be represented by an attorney, and a minor's counsel is appointed to represent and advocate for the child. In her role as minor’s counsel, Regan worked with CASA volunteers in the courtroom to obtain their valuable insight into the child’s life, and better advance the child's interests. She later advocated on behalf of dependent children at the Court of Appeal, participating in a number of writ and appeal dependency cases. Following the birth of her first child, Regan worked for a time as a solo practitioner handling private adoptions and as an associate attorney for Rigg & Dean, an Orange County personal injury and liability firm. In 2009, she accepted an invitation to join the Board of Directors of CASA OC, where she served for four years and volunteered as a member of the Holiday Luncheon Committee. In 2015, Regan joined the staff of CASA as Chief Program Officer. Regan was elevated to CEO position in December of 2017. Regan has spent most of her professional life performing work about which she is deeply passionate—advocating for children removed from their homes and separated from their families due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. “I have the greatest admiration and respect for the committed individuals who volunteer as Court Appointed Special Advocates and those who give so generously to ensure our organization may continue recruiting, training, and supporting those volunteers,” Regan says. Regan and her husband reside in North Tustin with their three children and a precocious animal that purports to be a “Bernedoodle,” but more closely resembles a Muppet.

Mike Auchter brings a unique blend of leadership and creativity to his role as Board Chairman of MenAlive, Orange County’s Gay Men’s Chorus. A retired manufacturing engineer with a 32-year career in the automotive industry, Mike’s last role was Chief Engineer for a global automotive component supplier. Vocal music has been a lifelong passion for Mike. From performing Gregorian Chant in high school to singing with the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club, he discovered the power and camaraderie of male voice choruses. This passion led him to co-found Measure for Measure, a community male chorus in Michigan, where he served as its first president and business manager, growing the group from 18 to 60 members—a legacy that thrives 37 years later. Since joining MenAlive in 2018, Mike has been instrumental in supporting its mission to create a chosen family and safe space for its members, build bridges and bring joy, all while fostering artistic excellence. Under his leadership as chairman since 2020, MenAlive has expanded its outreach and charitable efforts alongside its celebrated musical and theatrical productions. Retired since 2018, Mike resides in Irvine, California with his husband Alan and their dog Oliver. He volunteers at the LGBTQ Center of Orange County and continues to embrace his love of music, community, and travel. Valerie (she/her/hers) has been an integral part of MenAlive since 2005, starting as Costume Manager and later serving in various leadership roles, including Backstage Manager, Governance Director, Chorus Manager, Vice President of the Board of Directors, and most recently, Executive Director. Her deep passion for music and equality has fueled her dedication to the organization, which she considers her extended family. With her son Brandon now joining the baritone section, that family connection has become even more personal. Before stepping into her role as Executive Director full-time, Valerie spent 25 years as a business owner, specializing in early childhood education. She resides in Orange County with her supportive husband, Kevin, a drummer who shares her love for music. Together, they have three children, three grandsons, and a high-maintenance cat who rules their household. As a singer herself, Valerie brings a lifelong love of performance and an unwavering can-do attitude to everything she does. Will Minton has more than 25 years of marketing experience in the consumer goods, foodservice, and entertainment industries, most recently serving as the chief marketing officer of Breakout Learning, an education technology company. Before that, he spent 15 years leading communications and business development teams at Advantage Solutions (Nasdaq: ADV) and spearheaded groundbreaking marketing initiatives at Taco Bell, including the creation of Mountain Dew Baja Blast, the first chain-exclusive soft drink in the quick-service restaurant industry.

While Will has built a rewarding career in marketing, his true passion has always been songwriting. He began writing and performing his own songs in college, continuing to perform in New York City and Los Angeles before stepping back to focus on his career and family. CASA volunteer Susanna Wolfe was our guest this week. Susanna is a great example of a community volunteer who has lived a life of service and continued in a career helping others. Like me, Susanna is also a parent of an LGBTQ child and discusses what that has been like for her. She also tells us about her early life in Canada and how she made it to the United States to study occupational therapy and stayed to start her career. Susanna talks about the incredible work that CASA does helping children in the foster system and how she has personally benefitted from the experience of being an advocate for CASA. She also has her own lactation consulting business, continues to work for CASA, and participates in a program to teach inner city children to read (Reading Partners) and all while continuing to work as an occupational therapist and crochet. Our guest this week, Dalia Taft, tells us about her personal journey in philanthropy and how she became an integral part of the Jewish community’s volunteer superstars. I first met Dalia almost twenty years ago when she was participating with our children in the Orange County standout organization “The Community Scholars Program” which brought us together for scholarship, camping trips, and other family friendly Jewish activities. Dalia presently is the volunteer chair of the Grants Committee of the Jewish Community Foundation of Orange County. She also lives at the intersection of illegal immigration, the Hispanic community and the Jewish community because her son recently married a “Dreamer.” Dalia discusses the importance of compassion for these children of illegal immigrants that are not allowed citizenship as adults and fear deportation. She also discusses her religious and spiritual beliefs and how they have changed over the years.
