We've all been burnt by a poor sales experience. It probably doesn't take too much effort to recall an experience you've had with a salesperson who was too pushy, a little sleazy, and wouldn't take "No" for an answer. That experience probably left you wanting a shower after it was over.

Now you're a creative business owner and selling is a part of the deal. Logically you know that selling is necessary but you're so afraid of becoming a pushy salesperson. So much so that your desire not to be a bad salesperson has made you resent selling altogether. You rarely sell or push your offers because you don't want to be "that guy".

Listen, I get it! If you don't have the right mindset about selling, it can feel very uncomfortable or "too sales-y". A lot of creators really struggle with selling and it limits their ability to grow their business.

Let's change that.

In this episode, I'm digging into how to embrace selling as a creator. Selling doesn't have to feel icky, create guilt, or cause shame. That's why I'm sharing a few tips to help you reframe how you think about selling so that you can learn to embrace it.

My grandma Coffee and I have this wild belief that time speeds up right after Labor Day. Every year as September inches closer (especially around the end of the July) my grandmother starts threatening to talk with me less because according to her "If we start talking about holidays, it's going to be New Year next week". I always laugh it off but she's not wrong. Once September ushers in the official end of the Summer, it feels like we are on a sprint to the end of the year. The pressure is on. This is when we feel that renewed sense of enthusiasm and urgency to end the year better than we started. That means trying to crush any lingering goals or figuring out how to salvage the ones that have gone off track. Not to mention that it's nonstop holiday after holiday. Coupled with the Fall/Winter seasons tempting us to slow down and renew ourselves. No pressure. Is fear holding you back from showing up and being visible online?

If it is, I want to share a secret with you. When I started this podcast 4 years ago, it freaked me out to record on my own. I was perfectly fine doing interviews but the solo shows made me break out into a cold sweat.

Recording solo shows meant that I had to stand on my own expertise, offer my point of view, share my insights, opinions, and overall try to sound smart. No pressure!

All of that brought up feelings around imposter syndrome, fear of judgment, perfectionism, and left me feeling vulnerable. I was convinced that someone was going to burst my bubble and expose me as a fraud.

What if people hated my voice? What if I received hate emails because someone disagreed with something that I shared? What if people found out I don't know everything?

Spoiler alert! None of those what-ifs have happened and I don't know everything.

Today’s episode is pretty special because it was 12 years ago that I filed the articles of organization with the state of Florida and made my business official by making it an LLC (a limited liability company).

I did that all the way back in April 2009. Fast forward to April 2021, a whole 12 years have passed since I started on this journey to entrepreneurship. It has been a wild ride. There are definitely highs and lows.

Of course, I wanted to share this occasion with you. I figured the best way to celebrate this milestone in my business would be to share the lessons that I have learned along the way.

I thought long and hard about what I would share with you if you were just getting started or if you've been on the journey but not as long as I have been, and I came up with 12 lessons. These are the things that I would tell you if we sat down for tea and had a conversation.

I love sitting down to plan and with the year coming to a close so quickly, I thought now would be the perfect time to share a few ways to prepare for the new year.

I like to start planning the new year in November. I know some people don't want to rush the year and start their planning process so early, but as the holiday season ramps up it gets harder to make time for it.

I have found in previous years that by the time January rolls around if I didn't have a plan in place, it would take me weeks to get on track. The post-holiday slump is real. So a few years ago, I started putting my plan together before the holiday season kicked off. It has made all of the difference.

So I'm going to be sharing four ways to plan and prepare for the next year in your creative business.

Today I'm talking about how to pitch yourself for podcasts. I’ve been wanting to do this episode for months. I'm coming from the perspective of someone who both runs a show and is actively pitching themselves to be featured on other people's podcasts.

Podcasts are growing. The industry is booming right now. There is an increased interest in audio and podcast content. All of the major players are getting into it. Google is indexing podcasts in search results. Spotify has acquired anchor and is making a push to be the biggest player in the game.

So right now is a really great time to be a podcaster. If you don't want to go down the road of launching a show yourself, you can position yourself as a guest expert. In this episode, I’m breaking down exactly what you need to include in your pitch, how to be a good guest, best practices and how to find podcasts that you’d be a good fit for.
