And we're back! Thank you so much for your patience as I, JV, get back in the saddle to host the Pocketnow Weekly Podcast. I never closed the door on hosting this long running show, but I did find that I had to take care of my own stuff, personal and professional, as I juggled so many different projects at any given time. I want to give thanks to the Pocketnow team for always being understanding and patient with me, not to mention them giving me the space to do everything I do in whatever manner that keeps me healthy in body and spirit.

That being said, I had a great opportunity to bring back the podcast because some of our friends were together with me on a wonderful trip -- the Sony Kando Trip. Made primarily as a way for photographer and Sony Alpha camera enthusiasts and influencers to get together, the small core group of tech friends were also in attendance and I got two of them -- Thunder E of Booredatwork and David Cogen, TheUnlockr -- to join me as we talked about the entire lovely week and the Sony Xperia 5 IV.

Look forward to future episodes and I'll do my best to bring them out on a consistent basis -- but do bear with me as I get my feet wet again as the host of the Pocketnow Weekly Podcast!

Google I/O is on the horizon, and there are a few hardware announcements that JV and Nick are really excited for: the Pixel 6a, Pixel Watch, and Pixel Buds Pro. Of course, that doesn't mean we're really going to be seeing them in a few days, but it's still fun to speculate! Before that though, JV wanted to just put forth a bit of appreciation for pieces of tech that have gotten smaller, more powerful, and more efficient. Also, Amazon Fresh.

Xiaomi puts two phones to the fore: one with magnets and without bezels to speak of, another with two copper tubes and all the gaming might one could ask for. Where does that leave the Chinese manufacturer as we head out of 2018?

A make-your-own-phone kit has received multiples of its minimum crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter. And while it isn't an Android phone, there are valuable lessons to be had from the MAKERphone.

But first, the specter of improper handling of sexual misconduct at Google has reared its ugly head. At the the tip-top end of it is none other than who many consider to be the father of Android: Andy Rubin.

EXTRA: Press reactions to Moto Z3

Motorola might have put its name on the Moto Z3 last week, but at its launch event in its headquarters, it seemed as though its exclusive carrier, Verizon, as well as Qualcomm had upstaged the phone with talk about how great 5G is and how the Moto Z3 would be the first "upgradeable" phone for the new-generation network thanks to a weird looking Moto Mod.

The 5G Moto Mod contains the 5G-capable Snapdragon X50 modem and antennas reaching all edges of the mod to allow for maximum connectivity opportunities — mainly because as 5G will be put in place on millimeter-wave (around 30GHz and above), signal propagation through even a hand becomes more difficult.

Given that we don't have an idea as to how much the Mod will cost and that we only have a vague 2019 launch timeline to go with that Mod, the Moto Z3 ends up being a lightly retouched Moto Z2 Force at 40 percent off its original price.

This editor was part of the tech press corps that covered the event with Motorola, in our case, paying for our travel, itinerary and stay. We decided to ask two simple questions with our industry colleagues: What was your takeaway from the spin machine, and; what's the one question you are most looking forward to answering in your review?

Pocketnow Weekly 315: Note 9, Unbreakable

The Galaxy Note 9 has a hard road ahead of it. It has to make up ground in sales from the Galaxy S9 and it’ll have to do so with few visceral upgrades. So, what can Samsung do to prop up the biggest chance it has against the iPhone? Put Fortnite on it. The world’s most popular MMO is coming to Android and it looks set to debut on a phablet.

We’ll dig into a couple of follow-up stories on the MacBook Pro and BlackBerry KEY2 plus hit on the bitter pill for everyone in technology that is the tariffs tussle between the United States and China. How much will your next upgrade cost you? Will you be able to afford it?

What a busy week for things that don't have to do with smartphones... well, at least directly! For example, Apple's laptops. They try and fix one problem here and then make everything else better. The catch? You don't get there without breaking a few eggs and scrambling them on a MacBook Pro. It's hot. Too hot for its own good.

Also, are iPhone owners snobs? No. You judge everyone on an individual basis, especially the people that you would go out with on a date. But there's a survey this week that got stuck in my craw and I gotta tweeze it outta there. All that plus a final verdict (or two) on the BlackBerry KEY2 and a piece of carry-on luggage that rolls with your punches. We're bringing along a couple of old friends and it's bound to be a great time on this episode of the Pocketnow Weekly!

Pocketnow Weekly 313: iPhone SE stop, Surface Go

Microsoft came rip roarin’ ready this week with a small convertible tablet that starts out at $399. Unfortunately, unlike an iPad, if you really want to take your computing somewhat seriously, you’re going to need to spend upwards of $800 on a Surface Go. Does it make sense?

We’ll sort that out and look into the five-camera trend that seems to be cropping up, plus a lesson on case design, why if you don’t care about the blockchain you should probably care about HTC and the impending death of the four-inch iPhone. Again.

All this and more as we unfold the week’s news and then get a bit of dust in it and then make the keyboard not work, but at least the keys are quiet… on the Pocketnow Weekly!

Smartphones in School?

The New South Wales government is looking into whether it should limit or ban students from using smartphones and is commissioning a study to see how they're currently being used in class, between blocks and during lunch.
