Home to the Potawatomi, Odawa, Ojibwe, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Myaamia, Wea, Sauk, Meskwaki, and Ho-Chunk peoples, the place we now call Chicago has long been a historic crossroads for many Indigenous people and remains home to an extensive urban Native community. Yet most Chicagoans are unaware of the city’s history as a home to diverse Indigenous peoples and the vibrant Indigenous communities present today. Part of a multifaceted initiative developed in partnership between the Newberry, advisors from the Chicago Native community, and representatives from tribal nations with historic connections to Chicago, this exhibition reflects the dynamic and complex aspects of Native life in Chicago from the seventeenth century to the present. The exhibition draws largely on the Newberry's collection while also showcasing new work by contemporary Native artists, including Jason Wesaw (Pokagon Band of Potawatomi), Camille Billie (Oneida), and Jim Terry (Ho-Chunk).

Elk appeared in the limited series “1883” and also recurred in the first season of “Yellowstone.” In addition, Elk’s TV’s work includes “Outer Range,” “Lewis & Clark,” “Into the West,” “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Elk can next be seen starring in Peter Berg’s “American Primeval” limited series for Netflix, opposite Taylor Kitsch.

On the feature side, Elk got his start in “Wind River,” a role that garnered him much critical acclaim. He co-starred in “The Bygone,” “The Valley of the Gods” and “The Dark Foe,” for which he was nominated for best supporting actor at the Madrid International Film Festival. 

As a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and a direct descendant of Lakota holy man Black Elk, Tokala grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and speaks in several native languages.

We also chat about the challenges they faced while filming and the impact they hope this documentary will have in raising awareness about Native communities and prison reform. It’s a really fascinating conversation you don’t want to miss!

Ricky White is Anishinabe from Whitefish Bay First Nations in Ontario, Canada. He is Pizhew or Lynx Clan and a lifetime member of the renowned drum group, the Whitefish Bay Singers. As a result of growing up on an isolated reservation, Ricky retained deep knowledge of the Anishinaabe language and culture and those teachings continue to guide his spirit and work today.

Over the last 22 years, Ricky has served as an Ojibwe Language and Culture Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Executive Director of Education, and Superintendent of Schools. He was exposed to world class professional development, especially in the area of school improvement, school climate, and reaching students with whom our school systems struggle.

Ricky has shifted his professional career to generously sharing the blueprints of best practices for student success and working to help turnaround schools, programs and communities. He started a consulting company fittingly called “First Nations Consultants ” and is now sharing his strategies all over Canada and the United States to inspire and unite his methods and messages for enhancing education.

Ricky’s accomplishments go far beyond schools and classrooms. Mark is Ojibwe and a Band member of Whitefish River First Nation located on Birch Island, Ontario in the District of Manitoulin Island. As the proud founder of two First Nations-owned companies, IndiGenius and Associates Inc. and Birch Bark Coffee Company Inc., he is on a mission to make a difference in Indigenous people’s lives across Canada. He is a firm believer that with self-determination and perseverance, he can make a difference through education and awareness across our nation.

Author and filmmaker, Brian Young is a graduate of both Yale University with a Bachelor’s in Film Studies and Columbia University with a Master’s in Creative Writing Fiction. An enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, he grew up on the Navajo Reservation but now currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. As an undergraduate, Brian won a fellowship with the prestigious Sundance Ford Foundation with one of his feature-length scripts. He has worked on several short films including Tsídii Nááts’íílid – Rainbow Bird and A Conversation on Race with Native Americans for the short documentary series produced by the New York Times. He was a participant of the 6th Annual Native American TV Writer’s Lab with the Native American Media Alliance, where he learned to write Television Scripts.

Larry Yazzie is the Founder and Artistic Director of Native Pride Productions which is based in Jacksonville, FL. He is a two-time World Champion Fancy Dancer, Men’s Northern Traditional dancer, and Eagle Dancer. Larry grew up on the Meskwaki Settlement in Tama, Iowa where he learned the traditional ways of his ancestors.

He founded Native Pride Productions to give back to his community and to the world. His repertoire includes performances at the Olympics, The Kennedy Center, and the Smithsonian Institute.

As an international lecturer, dancer, and educator, Larry also plays the flute and hand drum and he sings as part of his repertoire. 1️⃣ Exploring Beyond the Main Attraction: When traveling, it's always exciting to venture outside the main purpose of your trip and discover hidden gems. In our case, we were able to explore Mirror Woods and Alcatraz, uncovering the rich native history and breathtaking landscapes that these sites had to offer.

2️⃣ Preservation of Native History: During our visit to Mirror Woods, a national park managed by the National Park Service, we learned about the Coast Miwok tribe and their connection to the redwood forests. The Park Service is actively working to highlight and preserve the native history of the area, making it a truly educational and immersive experience.

3️⃣ Alcatraz: Beyond the Notorious Prison: While Alcatraz is famously known as a former penitentiary, few are aware of its significance as a spiritual and meeting place for indigenous tribes, including the Miwoks. We also visited the new exhibit on the Native American occupation of the island by protestors.

The Gathering of Nations (GON) is a three-day event: April 27-29, 203 (Thursday – Saturday).

The Miss Indian World Talent Presentations is held at the Kiva Auditorium located at the Albuquerque Convention Center (Downtown Albuquerque) and kicks off Thursday evening; where young Native American Women represent their Native American and Indigenous people as cultural goodwill ambassadors. A Young Native American Woman will be crowned Miss Indian World, Saturday, April 27th after the Evening Grand Entry in Tingley Coliseum/EXPO NM in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.

From drum-maker to the lead singer of the Midnite Express Singers, Robin Opichee Day-Bedeau has been singing throughout Turtle Island for more than 30 years. So, it's fair to say Opie Day is pretty much a household name in Indian Country. Born to his late father Joseph John Bedeau from Onigum by way of the Leech Lake Ojibwe Indian Reservation and his mother Charlene Anne Day from the Bois Forte Ojibwe Reservation, Opie is Anishinaabe—one of the people in Ojibwe—through and through. A member of the fish clan, his passion is singing—both powwow and round dance.

Fawn Wood’s singing reflects her Cree and Salish tribal lineage. At an early age Fawn would sing her heart out at pow-wows alongside her mother and father. In 2006, Fawn was the first female to win the Hand Drum contest at the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow. In 2009 she opened the show at the 11th Annual Native American Music Awards (NAMMYS). Dallas Waskahat is a singer, drummer and educator who works to empower, strengthen and maintain Indigenous culture through the power of his voice, music and leadership.

Avis Charley (Spirit Lake Dakota/Diné) is a mother and an artist. She was born and raised in Los Angeles. Charley is a painter and a ledger artist using colored pencils on antique documents. She enjoys depicting Native empowerment using the female form as her main subject. Charley relishes in bringing attention to and celebrating the evolution of the Native identity, from pre-reservation period to present day, from ancestral homelands to city life. Charley is a graduate from the Institute of American Indian Arts and currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

In her debut picture book, professional Indigenous dancer Ria Thundercloud tells the true story of her path to dance and how it helped her take pride in her Native American heritage. At four years old, Ria Thundercloud was brought into the powwow circle, ready to dance in the special jingle dress her mother made for her. As she grew up, she danced with her brothers all over Indian country. Then Ria learned more styles–tap, jazz, ballet–but still loved the expressiveness of Indigenous dance. And despite feeling different as one of the only Native American kids in her school, she always knew she could turn to dance to cheer herself up.       Follow along as Ria shares her dance journey–from dreaming of her future to performing as a professional–accompanied by striking illustrations that depict it while bringing her graceful movements to life.

Here is a brief summary of the award-winning book. 

“Virgil Wounded Horse is the local enforcer on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota.  When justice is denied by the American legal system or the tribal council, Virgil is hired to deliver his own punishment, the kind that’s hard to forget. But when heroin makes its way into the reservation and finds Virgil’s own nephew, his vigilantism suddenly becomes personal. He enlists the help of his ex-girlfriend and sets out to learn where the drugs are coming from, and make them stop.

They follow a lead to Denver and find that drug cartels are rapidly expanding and forming new and terrifying alliances.  And back on the reservation, a new tribal council initiative raises uncomfortable questions about money and power. Leah started in disc sports with Ultimate Frisbee.  She recently picked up Disc Golf.  Leah now competes on the Disc Golf Pro Tour and is ranked in the top 60 female players in the world.

Rutherford Falls,” Peacock TV‘s binge-worthy new show, manages to do something few ever have: bring multi-dimensional indigenous characters into an American sitcom.

While Native Americans have historically been portrayed as monolithic in American film and TV, “Rutherford Falls” breaks the mold, taking Native Americans out of the box they're so often forced into. But beyond that, the show's just downright brilliant.

Created by Michael Schur (“The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Brooklyn Nine Nine”), Ed Helms, and Sierra Teller Ornelas (Navajo-Mexican), “Rutherford Falls” is equal parts clever and heartwarming and provides two unique perspectives of the Native American experience.

Or if a person doesn’t own mocs, can’t wear mocs, or perhaps their Tribe didn’t wear mocs, they may wear a Turquoise Awareness Ribbon instead. Even easier, the event takes place where you are, where you’re going and where you live. Rock Your Mocs if a fun way to unify Native American, Aboriginal, First Nations, Alaskan Native, Indigenous Peoples globally through internet social media, participants post their photos for everyone to enjoy, sharing their stories and creating an “online photo album” by using any one or all of the following hastags: #RYM2016 #ROCKYOURMOCS. It’s like a great big fun moccasin party that everyone gets to see pictures of! RYM was founded by Jessica “Jaylyn” Atsye of Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico U.S.A. and she has partnered with Emergence Productions, a Native American owned Event Production Company, who together are working hard to expand this cultural empowerment initiative worldwide!

Around the world, people have taken the initiative to organize - Moccasin making workshops - Round dances - Community “Fun” walk/run’s - Group photos - Native American and Indigenous cultural awareness events - Connecting youth and elder events - Museums have created moccasin or Rock Your Mocs exhibitions

Darren Thompson is an educator, public speaker, facilitator, and Native American flute player from the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Indian Reservation in Northern Wisconsin.  He has spent most of his adult life serving communities through leadership development, American Indian cultural awareness workshops, and the arts.

His career as an American Indian musician began with a burning curiosity of a nearly lost instrument – the Native American flute – while an undergraduate at Marquette University. Within a short time he became a sought-after concert musician who shared both traditional American Indian flute songs as well as his original compositions at colleges and universities throughout the United States. He has shared the stage with many award-winning musicians, artists, and talents giving him the inspiration to thrive as an artist.

His dedication to the preservation of American Indian music has taken him to some of North America’s most prominent American Indian organizations and events, including the Grand Opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the National Indian Education Association, the National Congress of American Indians, the North American Indigenous Games, America’s largest American Indian cultural festival, many universities, organizations, communities, and has recently began to share his talents internationally.

In 2009 Darren released his debut album, “The Song of Flower: Native American Songs from Ojibwe Country,” with Bear Tracks Digital Media, an American Indian owned production label. “The Song of Flower” was highly supported by well-known political prisoner and activist Leonard Peltier and Darren was invited to share his music all over the United States promoting for Peltier’s freedom and performing at his art galleries. He hosts an annual Native American flute retreat in his community, the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Reservation, with select flutemakers and renowned fluteplayers teaching eager learners about the instrument from all over the world.

In 2015, Darren released his second album “Between Earth and Sky: Native American Flute Music Recorded in the Black Hills,” with Drumhop Productions, an American Indian production label well-known in Indian Country that produces the annual Gathering of Nations Powwow CD and many others from throughout Turtle Island. Early in its release, Between Earth and Sky has received acclaim from media and professionals supporting the album’s intent – to preserve history. From the album’s success, Darren was awarded an artist-in-residence opportunity with the world’s largest monument, the Crazy Horse National Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

As a result of his successful residence at Crazy Horse Memorial, Darren was selected to be a regular performer in the summer months at Crazy Horse giving him the opportunity to continue to share his music with hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world.
