Opening a Specialty Practice + Multiple Streams of Income with Sydney Bassard

Many new SLPs hold back from starting their own private practice because they don’t believe they have enough experience to venture off on their own, but that isn’t true!

You can start your private practice as soon as you have something to bring to the table. Specializing is a great way to increase your referrals and find success sooner, even if you are a new SLP.

In this episode, I sat down with Sydney Bassard to talk about how she started her own private practice that focuses on deaf and hard-of-hearing children and literacy early on in her career and how she created multiple streams of income to increase her success.

Sydney knows that she can run her private practice in whatever way works for her. She is a multi-passionate person and is using her private practice as a way to focus on more than just one of them.

Sydney Bassard is a private practice SLP in Charlotte, NC. She graduated with her B.S. in Public Health in 2017 and her MSP in Speech Pathology in 2019. Sydney received both her degrees from The University of South Carolina.

Prior to opening her own private practice, Sydney worked in outpatient pediatrics as a member of the cochlear implant team. Her private practice, The Listening SLP, LLC, is founded on the principles to "Listen.Learn.Advocate" with the clients and families she serves.

She is enjoys sharing strategies for incorporating language and literacy throughout daily routines via @thelisteningslp on Instagram and Facebook. Outside of being an SLP, Sydney enjoys digital content creation, hiking, enjoying time with friends and families, and spoiling her dog, Kinsley.

Through her professional work, and with a lack of support during her own babies’ feeding journeys, she created The Feeding Mom. It is here that she provides in-person and virtual support to empower parents through their feeding journeys locally and around the world. Her philosophy is: every parent deserves to love feeding their baby.

Increasing Access to Services for Bilingual Populations with Ana-Maria Jaramillo

Have you ever felt called to start a private practice that serves the underserved populations in your community?

Some of my most successful Start Your Private Practice students are bilingual and have started their private practice to serve linguistically diverse populations. This population often faces a long waitlist for bilingual service providers. They are in desperate need of people like you!

In today’s episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my Start Your Private Practice students, Ana-Maria Jaramillo, to talk about how she decided to start her own private practice for the bilingual community and drastically increased her impact while also increasing her income.

Ana-Maria Jaramillo, M.S., CCC-SLP is a nationally-certified bilingual pediatric integrative speech-language pathologist with extensive experience providing speech-langauge therapy to children ages birth to 18.

She is the owner and founder of Voz Speech Therapy, a private practice that provides individualized services in English and Spanish in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Her area of specialty is working with children in early intervention, ages one to six years old, with autism spectrum disorders, orofacial myofunctional disorders, oral-motor disorders, expressive/receptive language disorders, learning disabilities, fluency disorders, social language impairments, and articulation disorders.

She graduated cum laude in 2013 with a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, and obtained her bachelor’s degree in child psychology and sociology from Saint Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. She currently serves as an adjunct professor at NYU and is pursuing a clinical doctorate in speech-language pathology from Northwestern University.

When she isn’t treating patients, Ana-Maria is actively speaking at local high schools and offering webinars on ways to diversify the field of speech-langauge pathology through her organization DiverCity SLP.

For SLP’s who focus on adult care in their private practices, one of the most important things to learn is Medicare. Many of our adult patients utilize it to pay for the care they need.

But how do you set it up for your private practice?

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my Start Your Private Practice students, Katie Brown, to talk about Medicare in the private practice setting. Katie runs her own practice for adult patients which has given her a lot of experience and knowledge on taking Medicare payments.

Billing Medicare can be scary for SLP’s. We have all been there! Katie is making it easier than ever for SLP’s to get enrolled, learn how to bill properly, and document their services through her new program Mastering Medicare for SLP’s.

Katie Brown, MA, CCC-SLP, CBIS is a speech-language pathologist and certified brain injury specialist practicing in Buffalo, NY. Katie is passionate about providing meaningful, functional therapy to those with aphasia and cognitive impairments related to stroke and TBI.

Outside of her private practice, Katie is active in the SLP community. She is an advocate for person-centered care and creates digital materials aiming to help other medical SLPs feel more confident in providing personally relevant therapy. Katie is a mentor for the Start Your Private Practice Program and an SLP consultant for the aphasia app company, Tactus Therapy. She volunteers for several non-profits and provides a monthly workshop for brain injury survivors.

What is your favorite population to work with as an SLP? Who are the clients that light you up?

If you have a dream population that you want to serve, go out and serve them! This is one of the main reasons you should start your own private practice.

If you are passionate about a certain population, diagnosis, or disorder, you can make them your priority by starting your own practice and getting them the help they so desperately need.

This was the case for my Start Your Private Practice student Alex Wynters. She knew that she wanted to work with adults with Parkinson’s, dementia, MS, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and so much more. She took her passion for this population and made her own business out of it and now she is making a difference in the lives of those she works with.

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, you’ll get to hear how she did it and the tips she recommends to anyone ready to do the same.

After her beginnings in-home health 6 years ago, she realized the unique challenges and services needed by those living with chronic conditions. It's the exact reason she decided to work with adults & seniors with chronic conditions. Due to her special abilities to build authentic relationships with her patients and communicate to their healthcare team (including physicians, specialists, and other therapists), she has been able to help her patients see significant gains, not only with their speech therapy goals but their overall health.

She believes that your progress in speech therapy takes a second seat to your mental health, advocacy abilities, health literacy, and food access which is why she focuses on a whole-body approach to therapy.

As a healthcare advocate and caregiver for her own father living with Parkinson's and dementia, she promises to treat you like you're part of the family.

Alex is also the co-founder of SHE x SHINES, a platform for multi-passionate women. Her mission is to help career women with an entrepreneurial spirit, break traditions and redefine their work by leveraging their skills. 2022 Private Practice Predictions

I always love to start the new year off with some predictions for private practice, so in this episode, I am sharing what I'm predicting, how you can be at the forefront of all of this knowledge, and how to adjust accordingly.

I do an episode like this at the beginning of every new year for a couple of reasons. First, I love watching trends happen and predicting things. Second, I want the Independent Clinician audience (that’s you!) to have a heads up so that you know where to place your energy.

Part-Time Private Practice?

A part-time private practice is a great option for anyone that is interested in starting a private practice but that isn’t sure if they want to take the leap into it full time.

To be honest, I didn't even know that part-time private practice was an option when I first started my private practice, but now it is how I teach the students in the Start Your Private Practice program to get started.

Only a handful of speech-language pathologists were offering telepractice before the pandemic, but our entire profession switched to telepractice overnight once it started!

Some speech-language pathologists absolutely love it and some prefer in-person. Those who love telepractice are trying to find ways to continue to do it because they love the flexibility it offers. I always tell those clinicians to start their own private practice and offer teletherapy!

There is a belief that speech-language pathologists who identify as Type A SLPs are more suited for private practice, and before I started my Private Practice, I thought the same thing!

As a Type B SLP myself, the thought of this made me very nervous because I was worried that I wouldn’t be successful.

In this episode, I am sharing my thoughts and feelings on this idea now as well as some data that I think you will find very interesting!

Dawn Moore's Private Practice Success Story

My guest, Dr. Dawn Moore, does too, so she is joining me to share her private practice success story. We talk about how she got started, how she grew, and the challenges that she has faced along the way.

Dr. Dawn Moore ClinScD., CCC-SLP, COM® is the founder of Expressions Speech, Language, & Myofunctional Center in Burlington, North Carolina. She is a certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist holding the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Additionally, she is a Certified Orofacial Myologist® through the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). Dr. Moore has over 23 years of experience in Speech-Language Pathology, earning her clinical doctorate in 2018.

For 15 years, she practiced in the schools of North Carolina as both a clinician and Lead SLP with recognition as a Teacher of Excellence and expanded into pediatric private practice in 2010, serving children of all ages. Her main interests include orofacial myology and speech sound disorders (articulation, phonological delay, and apraxia). She uses her own program, Let’s Hear It For /R/! which was the subject of her doctoral capstone, to correct the difficult /r/ sound. For phonology, she uses and teaches others how to use Barbara Hodson’s Cycles for Phonology due to the success she continues to have with the program.

Dr. Moore became a Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM®) after struggling to find help for her own daughter with a severe tongue thrust. Through this training and practice, she is presenting across the country educating SLPs, orthodontists, ENTs, and dentists about the impact myofunctional disorders have on speech, feeding, chewing, breathing, and dentition.

How to Put Yourself Out There with Amanda Modrowski

After slowly beginning in 2018 to get her “ducks in a row” while working full-time in a public school system, she finally pushed past the fear and went full-time into private practice in the summer of 2020. Since getting her first client, she has never second-guessed her choice and has never felt so happy and fulfilled working with her private clients.

Madeline Boe is the owner of Unbridled Abilities, a private practice that provides speech-language pathology services for children and young adults in Western Wisconsin and the East Metro (MSP). Unbridled Abilities provides speech services in natural environments including family homes, community parks/libraries, local storefronts, and job sites. Additionally, services may be provided within a farm setting where horses and other animals can be used to help clients achieve their goals.

Madeline has attended continuing education through the following organizations in order to safely and successfully utilize animals and equine movement as a part of her treatment plans: the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA), Horse Powered Reading and the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International.

Lessons I Learned from Business Leaders That Helped Me Be Successful in My Businesses

Since then, Sarah has resigned from her 90+ student caseload in her local district, accepted a part-time SLP position with a charter school, increased hours at her private practice, and been able to spend more time with her husband and two young children.

She went from being a solo private practitioner, just seeing clients on the side of her school job to employing many therapists, having a brick-and-mortar clinic, and serving clients via telephone therapy in her private practice.

In this episode, Quintina tells us a story about being in the school setting and realizing that she was ready to do something greater. Staying Small on Purpose with Kelsey Martin

Kelsey Martin, who is joining me in this episode, knows all about the balance that private practice can offer. She created a private practice so that she could spend as much time as possible with her young children while financially providing for her family as an SLP and business owner.

Kelsey is the owner of Playful Communication in Waxhaw, North Carolina. She specializes in serving the pediatric population and particularly enjoys working with children ages birth to 5 and those that have Down syndrome like her sweet boy, Isaac. Kelsey is married to Nate, and they have two beautiful children - Isaac and Rae. Her kiddos are her inspiration for her private practice and the flexibility it allows. She keeps her practice "small on purpose" to allow her to be with her children and show up for all of life's big and little moments with them!

Moving into Private Practice with Nicole Donnelly

I hear this a lot because many SLPs are concerned about timing especially if they are in the middle of moving. I totally get that, but there are definitely things you can do to get started whether you are physically moving or just moving into private practice.

In this episode, I am joined by Nicole Donnelly, and we are talking about her journey into private practice which actually began when she moved to a new city!

Nicole Donnelly is the owner of Sunflower Speech Therapy, LLC located in New Buffalo, MI. She has always had a dream of opening her own practice but never truly believed it was more than a dream. Sarina Murrell is more than a speech-language pathologist. She is a parent coach, an educator, a conference presenter, and now - a private practice owner. Sarina has been in education for over 12 years and in speech for about 10 years, and she has taught at all levels- from preschool to university.

Sarina has worked in medical operations services for cleft-lip/palate, children’s hospitals in NICU/PICU and outpatient feeding clinics, autism centers, home-based early intervention, private and public schools, and private practice services across the US, Ecuador, and China.

She is the founder and director of The Airplane Spoon - a private practice providing support for babies, children, and parents in feeding, communication and coaching.

After realizing that she was not able to serve her ideal population in the way that she really wanted to, she decided to take the leap, join the Start Your Private Practice System and never look back, so she is talking all about that in this episode.

Real Talk About Private Practice with Danni Augustine

Are you ready to hear a no-nonsense, straightforward story about starting a private practice?

In this episode, Danni Augustine is describing the steps that she took to get her private practice off of the ground and her motivations for doing so through a keep-it-simple approach.

Danni has been an SLP for 5 years. After working in a variety of settings, she found her love for dyslexia intervention, myofunctional therapy, feeding and all things birth-3. Not only has diving into these areas helped her business but it allowed her to fall in love with the SLP field again. She went from almost switching careers to now having a "boutique-style" private practice in Baton Rouge, LA, serving families in an office and home setting. Connecting with families and building relationships is what gets her up every morning (and her 20 cent coffee of course).

In addition to her love for therapy, she has found a new passion for helping other SLPs gain freedom in their finances and their careers. She is hoping to build a community of SLPs grounded in transparency, humility and understanding the immense value of having a plan.

Mary Burns is a speech-language pathologist and board-certified patient advocate. She has worked as an SLP since 2014 and is fiercely passionate about person-centered care and rural healthcare access. Although her academic training was certainly formative, Mary considers her experiences as both a patient and a caregiver to be the most influential on her career.

Mary launched her private practice, Overland Speech & Swallowing Rehabilitation, in 2018. Her practice continues to grow and change. Today, Mary is proud to offer mobile FEES to 22 counties across Oregon as well as in-home therapy to adults in central Oregon.

Mary also works as a mentor for The Medical SLP Collective and an instructor of McNeil Dysphagia Therapy Program. She also recently launched her passion project, The Sustainable Clinician, exploring new ways to help clinicians improve job satisfaction and sustainability through developing the internal skills that grad school forgot.

I am talking all about this with Emily McCullough from Parade Pediatric Speech Therapy which is a practice that is committed to providing a safe space for all kids and families on their communication journey.

Emily has more than 10 years of experience helping children and teens gain the communication skills they need to connect and interact meaningfully with the people in their lives. She believes that every child brings unique gifts and insights into the therapy process and that parents and caregivers know their child best. Emily values her partnerships with parents and caregivers and working as a team to help children feel proud, successful and empowered communicators!

She has extensive training and clinical experience in articulation disorders, receptive and expressive language disorders, autism, and communication disorders in bilingual and culturally and linguistically diverse children. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Emily received her B.A. in Spanish from Guilford College in North Carolina and her M.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Texas at Austin with a certificate in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology.

Emily lives in Austin, TX. For fun, she enjoys getting outside, composing music, reading and spending time with her wife and dog.

Today on the podcast, Sandy Dorsey is joining me to talk about her dream which is to serve underserved communities as an SLP, and how she is doing that.

Sandy Dorsey is a global speech-language pathologist, advocate for special needs and diversity champion. For over 25 years, she has provided diagnostic and therapeutic speech therapy services to wide-ranging populations in underserved communities. Sandy works to equip the hardest-to-reach children through her practice, All About Speech, located in New York City.

In July 2017, Sandy’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable children prompted her to start Smiles for Speech, a non-profit organization, offering sustainable access to speech and therapy resources to children around the world. Sandy also serves as an adjunct professor at an HBCU (historically black college/university) training marginalized, future generations of visionaries and leaders.

Sandy’s vision is for children all over the world not to be bound by color, socioeconomic status or location and receive access to speech therapy resources in order to reach their full potential.
