Doing a hike for the first time, everything is new. You feel the incline, you notice the trail markers, you are more aware of the sunlight, the distance, the ground under your feet, the unknown of it all. Do that same hike two weeks later, and it feels shorter, you stop noticing the what the trail head looks like, or where the first incline comes in, it feels shorter, more familiar, more predictable.

When you do something again and again, does it become muscle memory, is there still room for uncertainty? fear in the unknown? It might be the same hike, or another embryo transfer, or having a second kid but what gets forgotten in the repetition? what fears are quelled? what new things come up?

185. Holding Multiple Truths

You can disagree with someone and still respect them. You can love parenthood and be resentful of what it did to your body. You can love your husband and not like him in the same moment.

Holding two truths can be both difficult and necessary.

Marisol and Adam reckon with dialectical thinking in this episode as they hold space for both not wanting to have their child undergo surgery, and having their child undergo surgery. Neo had eye surgery this past week and as he recovers, Marisol and Adam recount their experience with both Western and Alternative medicine. As a follow-up to last weeks episode, Adam recounts a dehumanizing conversation with his sons Doctor after asking a question about his medical care and treatment. Adam explains how the couple often finds themselves in the middle when it comes to medical care (and many other issues). Listen in as the couple discusses holding multiple truths, like "science is real" and "other alternatives may work too" and how these concepts are often met with shame, dismissal, and judgement, instead of a more open and respectful conversation.

161. Finding Out About Baby

The Two Week Wait is over....sort of.

Marisol and Adam's gestational carrier has blood work done to assess the viability of the embryo that was implanted the week prior. The blood work revealed a positive result, but the HCG levels were on the lower end. The surrogate has to go back in to have more bloodwork done to make sure that the levels have doubled after the weekend and this episode was recorded during the weekend while the couple waited to hear more news. Marisol notes that she does not like talking about her fertility, that it feels deeply personal and that she is nervous about talking about it publicly. Three years later and the Marisol and Adam have grown to talk about fertility, infertility, making babies, IVF and the surrogate process a whole lot! Join us as we listen back on pt. 1 of our fertility series. This was the first time we put out a deeply personal episode related to growing our family and adding children into our lives.

This episode originally aired on 11/21/2019 and for those doing the math, we gave birth to Neo Luther 4/21/2021 so this was not the end of our journey for sure, but it was great insight to where we were emotionally in the process. It was the first time we had started dabbling our toes into the medical side of fertility and had started taking letrozole with our cycle.

As we have spent the last season navigating our next fertility journey it feels important to walk back in time to when we first started recording and publicly speaking about our fertility journey with Neo. It was a long road that ended in our now two year-olds life. As we take a small break in putting out new episodes (we have not stopped recording) we are navigating a new kind of fertility journey again as we move forward with a surrogate carrying our embryo from our first cycle of IVF. I hope you enjoy this step back in time.

After Marisol posted on social media about the wellness and yoga community being a part of the insurrection at the Capital on January 6th she received a lot of feedback and comments surrounding the extremism that can be found in the wellness community. Adam describes this idea of a political circle, where the further you dig, you will eventually find common ground with someone digging from the other side. In the same way we see political moderates find commonality on an array of issues, political extremists from both ends, find their commonality as well. Marisol and Adam dig deep into the commonality surrounding vaccine decisions and conspiracies with the far right and far left and how their privileged identities have played a role in their information literacy and want for community health.

Chama is the owner of Homegrown Families a perinatal health center and doula agency, is a mother of two daughters and lives on a farm outside of Asheville NC.

Bill Nimelman was born in Niagara Falls, New York and after 25 years of living in Texas, he moved back to NY in 2007. There he runs a freelance graphic design business and has been seriously painting since 2000, primarily mixed media in acrylics and has shown his work extensively in Dallas and Buffalo. In 2015, he launched an Etsy shop with his sister and loves searching for vintage treasures and finding them a new home.

Why name your podcast "Reading Aloud" when you don't actually read aloud in the podcast? What effect has hosting a podcast had on your life? Marisol and Adam kick off the podcast with the explanation as to why the Reading Aloud Podcast, is called "Reading Aloud." The couple also discusses opening up their lives to let the world listen in.

The Asheville couple explains that the podcast all got started when they presented a Pecha Kucha (pronounced PEA CHA KU CHA.) A storytelling format where a presenter shows 20 slides for 20 seconds of commentary each. Their Pecha Kucha touched on the idea that a shared lens creates a deeper understanding of one another and builds a united foundation on which to learn.

The conversation turns to the idea of "letting it all hang out." Recording their lives through the good, the bad, the difficult, and the drunk. When you listen to the Reading Aloud podcast you are opening a door into their lives, but are Marisol and Adam really comfortable with that? Adam wonders out loud if they are really opening that door as wide as possible and what it would look like if they pressed record for everything. Marisol expresses hesitation around the idea, with lack of context and entering in at the middle point of learning. The couple then shares times that they have not recoded and released in real time (IVF, Birth, Big Fights) and they toy with the idea of being even more open and letting the audience here an unedited version of episodes or getting even more raw on the podcast. They leave the answer up in the air for now, but recognize that the more open they are, the more opportunities they have to help someone else.

Adam and Marisol close out the episode with the question, Are we keepers of relationship wisdom?

86. Relationship Rollercoaster

What if we are never as happy as we were before having a baby? There are ups and downs in every marriage or relationship. Marisol and Adam discuss their relationship as it stands now and how playing the long game can help get you through the rollercoaster of a relationship. Although Adam is not your "typical" sports fan he draws on a sports analogy for this episode; the idea that a relationship can have a "championship window" and how the foundation of a relationship (or the foundation of a sports team) can impact the ability to have multiple championship windows.

While driving in the car, Marisol and Adam have a discussion based around Marisol's question "What if we are never as happy as we were before having a baby?" Which unfolds into an even more personal question for Marisol, "Will I ever be happy again?" Adam and Marisol then break down what their life looked like prior to having the responsibility of a child, when they felt like they could place priority on travel, experience, and adventure. The answer was almost always, yes.

Now, that life looks much different.

There is so much pressure on parents to not have thoughts like "did we make a mistake?" or "have we had our happiest days" It is hard to let yourself go to that place and acknowledge that those thoughts are real. People are afraid to ask difficult questions out loud, because they are afraid of the potential answer they may find. We must ask those questions because it is acknowledgement that those thoughts are occurring. Adam explains that you can't burry it down. You have to process those emotions and feelings, and work to create a healthier relationship with it, through understanding and empathy, or those feelings will build overtime.

85. 2022 Intention Setting

2022 is officially here and Marisol and Adam break down their intentions, hopes, goals, and words for the year ahead. Marisol warns listeners to be carful what word they chose for the year, noting that last year her word was "courage" and boy did that come up time and time again, with Covid, Fertility, pre-term birth concerns, and more. Sometimes you just don't know the power of your word until you are smack dab in the middle of a hurricane.

The New Year is a time for reflection, rebirth, and refocusing. Adam's word came to him quickly, he wants to become a sponge, listening and soaking up all of the knowledge he can. Adam's hope for 2022 is to "Use that learning to feed and fertilize what I am planting this year." While Marisol, in true Gemini fashion, has refused to narrow it down to one word, instead having a word that is also an acronym, then following it up with a hand motion for the year, Reverberating equal parts and finding balance.

The couple looks back on their intention setting from 2017 where they wrote out intentions for 5 years and 10 years down the line. They share words, statements, and questions that have come to fruition in the past years and how the words they had once wrote, took on new meanings. Closing out the podcast episode with some hopes for the New Year ahead and setting intentions into motion.

These questions and more shape the conversation on todays episode of Reading Aloud. Marisol and Adam contemplate men's emerging role in society and how we can give power to women rising. Marisol explains the concept of an energetic match and recounts past relationships where that were a mismatch. She elaborates on how being in relationship with Adam has helped her to find a energetic balance. They both discuss how parenthood and having a baby has changed their energy and they way the show up in their marriage for each other.

Adam explains to Marisol that he spoke with a friend this week about his friends desire to date an spectacular woman and how he needed to show up in that space to both feel worthy of finding a partner and how he navigates being spectacular himself. Adam then lays out the male role and what it visually represents to him in a modern world. Men being able to hold space for women and support them in their endeavors, in a quite and strong way, sans ego. This is a new concept as many men are in the center of the world with women silently doing all of of the work to hold that space. Because of the patriarchy men have always been the riser and women doing the silent support. Marisol notes that women are great at holding space for others, in relationships, at work, and in friendships.
