87. Warning Signs of Spiritual Manipulation: How I Escaped a Cult with Peter Young

Can you recognize the warning signs when someone you love is being spiritually manipulated?

Today's conversation with Peter Young, real estate professional and author, is a sobering reminder that spiritual deception can happen to anyone—even lifelong Christians.

Peter grew up in a strong Christian home, accepted Christ, was baptized, and read his Bible cover to cover multiple times. Then he married a woman who brought a "family guru" named Uncle Robert into their marriage—a man who would control their lives for the next 20 years.

Uncle Robert taught that casinos were the true churches. He convinced Peter's wife she wasn't saved until he pointed it out. He told Peter's father-in-law he was on par with a cockroach. Slowly, like a frog in boiling water, Peter found himself brainwashed for two years.

The turning point came when his wife left and Uncle Robert told their five children that Peter was just a "sperm donor and bloodline"—not a real father. That's when the lies started to crack. It took a full year for Peter to realize it wasn't his fault and he wasn't crazy.

Peter learned three critical lessons: First, a strong Christian marriage needs Christ at the center—not a parent, priest, or guru. Second, isolation from the body of Christ makes you vulnerable to false teachers. Third, salvation comes before sanctification—anyone switching that order is acting as a gatekeeper to God.

His biggest lesson? He was burning out doing everything God told him to do—until God showed him a picture. Karl was pushing ahead, trying to drag God along in the yoke instead of going at God's pace.

God gave him four statements that changed everything: Slow down. Go at my pace. Do what I say. Trust me.

Karl learned that success isn't about revenue or impact—it starts in his relationship with the Lord. Spending time in God's Word each day became his true success criteria. Everything else flows from that.

The challenge: We can't educate people beyond their level of obedience. If you're not sowing time into client acquisition, you won't reap clients. God's principles apply to everything.

The workplace reality? More than half of conversations at work are probably negative. That doesn't just waste time—it attracts more negativity and keeps you stuck.

Deanna's daily practice: She rewrites Bible verses in first person and speaks them out loud. "He gives me the ability to produce wealth." Instead of scrolling social media and feeling anxiety creep up, she shuts it off and tackles what she's been avoiding.

One shift that changes everything: Replace "I have to" with "I get to." Add "yet" to complaints. "I'm not where I want to be... yet."

I refinanced my house and bought into a coaching franchise in 2021, convinced the systems would carry me to success. Within a month, I knew I'd made a mistake.

I wasn't the expert in business they thought I was. I had an inferiority mindset. And I was trying to operate the franchise's version of who I was supposed to be instead of being authentic to how God made me.

For six months, I watched myself crash. As an analytical engineer, I knew I was failing but didn't know how to stop it. The depression was crushing—until June 30th, 2022. That's the day I quit, and it became the best day of my life.

God's grace kept me going with clients I didn't deserve while I worked a W-2 job. He gave me a coach whose personality actually complemented mine. And He convicted me with a question I'd been asking my own kids: Your success is directly correlated with your relationship with God—so why doesn't your coaching content reflect that?

Should Christians pursue wealth?

The Bible seems to send mixed messages about money. It says, "Better is little with the fear of the Lord" but also "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor, and life." So what should our mindset be as Christian business owners?

Today I'm talking with Gino Barbaro, a certified money coach and real estate investor who homeschools his six kids. He's learned hard lessons about money, scarcity, and what God wants for us.

Gino shared a powerful quote: "Money does not corrupt an individual—it reveals the individual." If you want to create impact and serve families, you'll need to make money. Money is just a tool.

Legacy isn't just financial—it's three things: human capital (faith), intellectual capital (wisdom), and financial capital (resources). Without the first two, wealth disappears.

Gino was paralyzed by fear during the 2008 recession, stuck in victim mentality. His turning point came when he stopped being a victim and got clarity on where he wanted to go.

Four Steps to Change Your Money Mindset:

Stop being a victim
Get clarity on what you want
Go easy on yourself
Examine your money biography—what you heard about money as a kid is still playing on repeat

We don't own anything. God owns everything. We're stewards. Profit is the fuel, not the destination.

How do you know if a coach is right for you?

Not every coach will be a good fit—even if they're getting great results for other people.

Today's guest, Kevin Weiss from The Contrarian Way, learned this the hard way when he hired a coach with a five-figure price tag, made all his money back in the first month, and then fired him anyway.

Kevin is a coach for Christian coaches who built his business on one simple rule from Matthew 7:12 "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." When you apply this to business—how you market, sell, and serve—it changes everything.

Kevin shared his story of running a kettlebell studio with his wife. They hired a coach who got them results immediately, but the tactics felt manipulative and they got delegated to someone else. Three things were misaligned: the person, the process, and the product.

The Three Alignments

Person: Do your values align? Look at their content—are they real people or just a polished highlight reel?

Process: Does the way they coach feel right? When misaligned, your values start changing, you burn out, or you walk away.

Product: Will you work with the coach you're hiring or get delegated to a different coach? Is the meeting structure sustainable?

You can survive one misalignment. But when all three are off, someone's going to hate showing up to the coaching sessions.

Watch for high-pressure sales tactics demanding immediate decisions. A great coach gives you space to pray and discern fit. Tunnel vision for results makes you ignore warning signs. The end does not justify the means—getting results while compromising your values isn't worth it.

By aligning ourselves with God first. Seek first His kingdom. When you align with what matters most, everything else—including how you choose a coach—falls into place.

Do a self-check on the person, process, and product before hiring a coach. Are they aligned with who you are and who you want to be?

What does it really mean to "seek first God's kingdom" when you're running a business?

It's Matthew 6:33—a verse we've all heard. But what does it actually look like when you're building and scaling your company?

David takes us back to Daniel 2 and that dream about a statue. A stone—carved without hands—smashes it and becomes a mountain filling the entire earth.

That stone? It’s God's kingdom. Unlike Babylon, Persia, Greece, or Rome, this kingdom never ends because it's made up of people from every nation following King Jesus.

When Jesus shows up, He says, "The kingdom of God is at hand."

The Kingdom of God is individuals following Jesus—King Jesus. A multitude of people aligned with Jesus, seeking, loving, knowing, fearing, and obeying Him. From creation to Israel to the eternal state, God's plan has always been the same: a world of people who love, know, and fear God.

So what does it mean to seek God's kingdom in your business?

It means asking: Is this action or plan in alignment with God's way? Your product, marketing, sales, operations, customer service, treatment of clients, vendors, employees—all of it. And whenever there's a difference between your way and God's way? You choose God's way. Every time.

David gives you five specific ways to seek God's kingdom while building your business. Lead by growing yourself. Advance in faith. Work with diligence. Work with humility. And work with excellence.

The story of Josh Cantwell’s surviving cancer is one such story. You will be moved as you listen to the experiences he went though, and the lessons God has taught him through it all.

Sometimes things go as planned, many times they do not. But God’s plans always work out according to God’s plan.

What if you could hear from God so you knew the direction you should go with your business? That would be a game changer.

Today we have on Steve Meisenheimer from The Effective Leader to talk about how God speaks to us.

Steve speaks from his many years of experience in learning to hear from God and then acting upon it.

It’s not a telephone call, letter, or email but God does still speak to His people if we seek His face.

This is not a mystical seance where you empty your mind and have it filled with ideas, but a seeking of God’s direction and accepting of what is given you. It is also validating what God is saying through the Bible and other means.

Steve has changed the phrase, “This idea might have been from God, but it was probably me” to “This idea might have been from me, but it was probably God.”

God may be speaking to you more than you know. Jesus said, My sheep hear my voice, they know me, and they follow me (John 10:3-4).

Steve hears from the Lord different from how I believe I hear from the Lord, but this is an interesting case study of seeking God’s face and being guided by Him.

I believe that God speaks to us today through the Holy Spirit and uses the Bible, prayer, circumstances, and other believers. When these four are in alignment that is an indication that a purpose or action is from God. God works through unity, not majority rule.

Having started business right after 9/11 the first years was a fight with failure. God helped Rick succeed and then he “put God on the shelf.” That didn’t go to well.

After putting in 14–16-hour days 7 days a week, multiple personal crises, and facing physical and emotional deterioration, Rick gave his business over to God, 100%. With a humble attitude he admitted he did not know what giving his business to God looked like, so he just prayed, "show me what to do,” and God did.

11 years later Rick is living his best life as God has blessed him with a positive God-centered business culture that impacts whomever they contact.

Employees come in broken and leave healed and transformed. Customers, vendors, auditors, whomever comes in the door is met with an opportunity to see God at work.

God has also blessed RC Fasteners with record sales years even after 22 years in business.

Don’t work with God and then “put Him on the shelf” when things go well.

You need to go all in with God to, not halfway.

Knowing your ideal client inside and out is a key step for effective lead generation. You must know them intimately. What they do, where they hang out, how they think, what are their challenges, what do they need right now?
90% of the time your ideal client is a former version of yourself.
Key question to ask about your offer: Would you buy and use your product or service?
Find someone who is where you want to be and learn from them. Sometimes it is learning all the mistakes not to make that is most helpful.
Every setback is a learning opportunity.

Greatest mistake is not putting in the work once you know who your ideal client is. As an Entrepreneur you will fail 9 times out of 10. You have to pick yourself back up for that 1 time out of 10 where you will succeed.

You may also end up working with people who do not bring joy to your life. This is why branding must come before marketing.

When looking for your ideal client there are two groups of people that you will attract. Those like you and those opposite you. Likes will attract likes and opposites will attract. Either will be a good fit as your ideal client. The real branding question is who are you?

To seek God first in your business you need to:

1. Seek God in every decision

Do you ever ask yourself why bad things happen? In the moment do you ever wish you didn’t exist? When life is turned upside down it is easy to whine and bewail that the world is against us. Why is business so hard? Why can't I get a break?

However, what if we could back and see how that one event greatly benefited our life down the road?

What if we could truly look at every situation, good and bad, and see that they are just lessons learned to make us better people to help us be successful.

Today we are going to dive into what it means to see life from God’s perspective. They say hindsight is 20/20. But what if you could get that 20/20 vision today. I think you can, and it will change your life.

In this episode we discuss:

Perspective – Seeing life from a specific point of view. Mindset is how you think. Perspective is how you see. Remember the Train Illustration of perspective and seeing life from God’s vantagepoint.

1. God’s perspective is more accurate than our perspective

My Paradigm Shift: I cannot call anything bad, because I do not know how God will use it.

1. Simple prayer: “Thank you for (situation or event). You have brought this into my life for your purpose, help me to learn what you want to teach me from (situation or event).”

2. Get to know God better

3. Trust God. He knows better than you do

God loves you—Wants what is best for you more than you do
God is all knowing—Knows what is best for you more than you do
God is all powerful—Will enable you to endure whatever comes your way
