Dry bulk shipping went into 2026 in stronger than expected position, but will the market hold up?

In the third part of our shipping market outlook series, we are focusing on the dry bulk sector with Will Fray, a Director of Maritime Strategies International (MSI).

Speaking about the dry bulk market in 2025 to the Seatrade Maritime Podcast resilience is the word that Will uses.

By this he means resilience to various external factors such as tariffs and the now suspended USTR port fees on Chinese built and owned vessels and on fundamental basis that the fleet grew by 3% but demand only grew by 0.5% in terms on tonnes traded. “So, it's quite remarkable that dry bulk earnings only fell by around 10% year on year,” he says.

EV fires and shipping with Dr. William Moore, The American Club

On this episode of the Seatrade Maritime Podcast, Gary Howard speaks with Dr William Moore, Head of Loss Prevention at the American Club, about vessel fires — specifically those involving electric vehicles (EVs). Moore explains the causes of EV fires, and how thermal runaway stems from mechanical, thermal, or electrical abuse of lithium-ion batteries, noting that used EVs can pose higher risks than new units, and that risks increase for states-of-charge over 30%.

While cars with internal combustion engines are far more likely to ignite than EVs, EV fires are tougher to extinguish at sea, Moore explains, as foam and CO₂ are less effective, and the huge volumes of water necessary to control an EV fire can threaten vessel stability while creating toxic runoff.

Recent high-profile car carrier losses often lack definitive root causes, although one confirmed case, Grande Costa d’Avorio in 2023, was not caused by an EV.

With formal IMO rules not expected before 2027, Moore urges ship-specific risk assessments, robust early detection using thermal sensors and cameras, rigorous drills/PPE readiness, smart stowage and access planning, and industry information-sharing to protect crews and assets.

Nuclear power on the agenda for maritime with Mikal Boe CEO of Core Power

Nuclear power as an alternative fuel for maritime is gaining serious momentum as a pathway to zero emissions for the industry.

One of those at the vanguard of trying to commericalise nuclear for shipping has been Mikal Boe, CEO of Core Power, a company he founded in 2018.

It is over three years ago since Mikal last appeared on the Seatrade Maritime Podcast and things have clearly moved on a long way in that time.

“I think the biggest milestone over the last three year has been the insertion of nuclear into the agenda at the IMO. It's not quite there yet, but it is working its way through the system and we believe in 2025, become part of the work stream at the IMO, and similarly at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna we've now got maritime firmly on the agenda. So that aligns the two big standards, organisations for maritime and nuclear, around this topic of putting this at sea in a safe way,” Mikal tells the podcast.

Fleet efficiency and gmec 2024 with Ardmore Shipping’s Suraj Batra

Efficiency is key to commercial and environmental performance in shipping, in this episode we discuss efficiency as an ethos and the technologies that enable more efficient tanker operations.

The shipping market in the first half of 2024 has been characterised by strong significant movement and earnings for some sectors are now highest they have been in 15 years. So what does the second half of the year have in store?

We're just past the half-way point of the year and the Seatrade Maritime Podcast takes stock of movements in shipping markets over the first six months of 2024 and looks ahead at expectations for the remainder of the year.

One of the world’s largest offshore vessel owners Tidewater drove consolidation in the sector towards the end of a lengthy downturn.

“At that time, people weren't as convinced that the industry was ever going to recover, and that's very natural when you go through a long down cycle. And, so, there were a lot of questions as to whether or not the industry would continue on and resurge as it has. I always believed that it would, I wasn't sure exactly when, but I'm pleased that it's come to fruition in that way,” Quintin V. Kneen, President & CEO of Tidewater, tells the Seatrade Maritime Podcast.

In this latest episode we are in conversation with Quintin V. Kneen who joined Tidewater through its merger with GulfMark Offshore in 2018, the first part of that consolidation piece. Following this he led the company through the acquisition of Swire Pacific Offshore and the Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) fleet of Solstad.

In this In Conversation episode of the Seatrade Maritime Podcast, Europe Editor Gary Howard speaks with Paul Jewell, System Development Manager at National Grid about the challenges facing UK energy distribution as decarbonisation looks to change energy demands across the country.

Jewell talks about the familiar challenge of building assets with a long life span during a period of uncertain outlook, and the steps National Grid are taking to ensure its infrastructure is ready to cope with the increase energy demand of the future, as well as changes in energy production.

In this latest episode of the Maritime Podcast we hear from Cameron Mitchell about his experience within a government structure and his advice to newcomers on the importance of learning & development for successful career progression.

In a conversation with Emma Howell, Director of Digital Media for Seatrade Maritime, Cameron takes the listener on a voyage from his youth growing up in the West Coast of Scotland and studying Marine Engineering in Glasgow through his career with the Isle of Man Ship Registry.

He talks about his time working as surveyor for the Isle of Man Ship Registry and qualifying to conduct various types of audits and moving onto various other roles within the island’s government under which the Registry sits.

Cameron has since returned to the Registry in a leadership position and discusses the training and skills required for such a role. He also explains about the structure and workings of the Registry.

The conversation moves on to touch on other roles Cameron has in the maritime industry in mapping global pollution and international superyachts.
