The first season of the new WNBL era wrapped recently in spectacular fashion, the Opals went undefeated in the Women’s World Cup qualifiers in Istanbul cementing their FIBA Women’s World Cup ranking and we take a minute for a WNBL26 retrospective and get excited for a new NBL1 chapter!

We got to see some really glorious finals basketball and amazing crowds, a nail biting season with some hook turns but most importantly big forward strides. Ahead of International Womens Day 2026, Madel Guevarra & Isay Aurellado are partnering to launch their new program ‘Let Her Stay In The Game’ based at Hoops Sports Performance in Western Sydney. The program will enable teenage girls and women to stay in the game longer through access to education, inclusive programming, and connections.

Both Madel & Isay have long been involved in community basketball, and fill the gap for inclusivity amongst teenage girls in their communities that have historically seen them drop off the cliff when it comes to retaining girls in sports.

The program tips off on 28th February, with an IWD expert panel on 8th March talking to cultural diversity, unconscious bias & science backed research, and tailored training and goal setting sessions throughout March for teenage girls and women to stay in the game.

The former Wildcat shares what's important to her, as a player, a teammate and person. Displaying tremendous poise for a young player both on and off court, she’s grounded in the opportunities she's been gifted, leaving no doubt that Issy’s got the right stuff to make a huge impact on the Aussie women's basketball landscape.

A leading sports economist and professor at Southern Utah University, he knows how to challenge conventional wisdom when talking about economics and sports. Using a wonderful mix of human stories, economic theory and a dose of healthy journalistic skepticism he’s got lots of examples you can wrap your head around - which is how we like it!

Cue dramatic music (yep he studied a minor in music) as the WNBA and women's sports more broadly enters the chat.

He's published multiple articles on sports economics, authored and co-authored several books on the business of sports with an increasing focus on women’s sports, as highlighted in David’s latest book Slaying The Trolls, co-authored with Nefertiti Walker, researches the explosion of women’s sports amidst online vitriol and systemic discrimination setting the stage for the current battle unfolding within the WNBA.

This podcast was taped just before Davids’ recent article ‘What it Would Look Like to Pay WNBA Players What They Deserve’ was published in The New York Times. This article covers the very topic we dive into in this podcast — the WNBA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which expires at the end of October and is generating huge headlines.

Forecasting how things might play out with the CBA makes for an intriguing but realistic look into human behaviour.

The outcome of this negotiation will influence women’s sports globally as the WNBA once again navigates uncharted territory for women's basketball and women’s sports more widely.

As an NBL1 East Championship Coach, Renae Garlepp has experienced an amazing trajectory in her coaching journey in recent years.

Winning an Oceania Gold with the Sapphires last year, she was awarded the FIBA U19 Womens World Cup’s Best Coach in the GEMS Silver Medal campaign.

Renae mentors many up and coming future stars in her role not only at National level but also in NBL1 and as an assistant coach in the WNBL where alongside Head Coach Guy Molloy, guided the Sydney Flames to a gobsmacking playoffs berth despite several injuries.

A great insight into the stories behind her coaching experience and approach in mentoring young aspiring players.

In this podcast we’re joined by dual para-athlete Hannah Dodd, beginning her elite para career at age 12 and eventually competing in two sports, Equestrian and Wheelchair Basketball.

In a two decade career at the elite level Hannah realised her childhood dream in Equestrian and then went on to compete for the Gliders in Wheelchair basketball. She opens up on the inevitable struggles and experiences that has forged her steely determination as well as the richness in travelling for her sport.

As part of the historic silver medal winning Wombats squad in the first ever 3x3 Wheelchair event at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Hannah tells us about the truly rewarding experience travelling alongside the able-bodied Gangurrus (winning Bronze) “one of the awesome things about the Comm Games is that the para and the able-bodied runs concurrently.”

Listen in for the profound sentiment Hannah shares on resilience, a skill she's finely tuned as a para-athlete that has experienced and adapted to multiple re-classifications as well as the disappointment of missing a shot at the Paris Paralympics.

It’s been a full and enriching career as a para-athlete with retirement earmarked in coming years, but not before Hannah embarks on some amazing opportunities in Europe and with the Gliders.
