Join co-hosts Lesley, Tam and Ray as they discuss the alternative suspect, Maurice Johnson in depth. We go really deep in this discussion! And you can also meet our new Intern, Melinda! So exciting!

In 1992, just 11 months after the murder of young Clark Gas Station attendant Bill Little, Kroger Station attendant Derek Brooks was shot in the chest during an armed robbery gone wrong, just 2.6 miles away. Like with Bill, the robber attempted to kill him with two shots to the chest, but the gun jammed. A petty sum of cash was stolen and the assailant fled in a maroon colored coupe, with a female get away driver. After being apprehended that same night, and identified with matching footprints and fingerprints, Maurice Johnson admitted to the crime, was charged with attempted murder and armed robbery, apologized to the victim, and was sentenced to twenty five years in prison. The same officers, detectives, and crime scene technicians worked both cases, and were key trial witnesses against Jamie Snow. They received a tip that Maurice Johnson admitted to the Clark Station robbery and murder. However, we cannot find any documents to suggest Maurice Johnson was ever investigated for Bill Little’s murder.

Jamie was blown away by his Christmas present this year. Six musicians from 6 completely different genres were commissioned to write, compose, and record a song about Jamie. The only information they received was information about Jamie and his case, and they were asked to write a song about whatever aspect or view point resonated with them - whether it was from Jamie's point of view, a supporter's point of view, his family - anything goes. And man, did they really step up to the plate! I can't begin to tell you how wonderful these artists were to work with on this project. They were so in tune, pardon the pun, with Jamie's plight, and our efforts to overturn his wrongful conviction. They were filled with hope for his release, and that has everything to do with you. I have no doubt they garnered material from his support network because the lyrics speak for themselves. Thank you for that. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do! Join co-hosts Bruce, Lesley, Tam and Ray as they discuss the "Jeff's" in depth. An extra long episode for you listening pleasure. We also start with Bruce and Ray's thoughts on the Bible Story episode because they were unable to join us on the pop up episode. Lot's of interesting theories and laughs in this one!

In August of 1991, just five months after the murder of young gas station attendant Bill Little, a string of other gas station robberies plagued Bloomington. Jeff Miller and Jeff Durbin colluded to rob gas stations together with a gun, for petty sums of cash. Durbin was the getaway driver, and planned to use doctored cab driver’s log sheets to evade detection. Miller chose an Adam’s Family Halloween mask. Regardless, Miller was identified by people who knew him when he behaved erratically after the last robbery, and the two eventually confessed, being sentenced to 38 years behind bars between the two. These known, convicted, and self-admitted robbers were never seriously investigated for the strikingly similar robbery and murder of Bill Little. Listen to hear how they avoided prosecution for Jamie’s case, and the ominous remarks made by one of them, after coming face to face with Jamie, post conviction.

Bruce, Tam and Lesley discuss alternative suspect Isaac "Ike" Gaston.

Isaac “Ike” Gaston was a dead ringer for Gutierrez’s composite, and he lived within a mile of the crime. He also had a long criminal history spanning some 40 years which included violence - such as assault, burglary, robbery, and sexual misconduct with a minor. Even while Gaston was awaiting sentencing for another charge in county jail, he assaulted four correctional officers in a vile way. 10 years ago, we only had Isaac's picture, and no other information. But thanks to a few social media leads, we learned his name and later discovered his identity, and subsequent police reports related to tips for Gaston. As for how he was cleared of the murder, that's anyone's guess.

There were only two items that we know for certain left by the killer of Bill Little – and that’s the two bullets recovered from his body. Jamie’s attorneys filed the first ballistics motion over 10 years ago, and yet he’s still fighting for testing. In this episode, we review a case very similar to Jamie’s in which bullets retrieved from a victim were matched to a weapon as early as 1997. We explore the characteristics of bullets used in forensics to identify related ballistic evidence and reveal out of state and international inquires made by detectives. Why has the McLean County State’s attorney spent thousands of dollars in the past 10 years fighting testing – when the Exoneration Project has been willing to pay for all of it?

S2-EP37: In the Interest of Justice - Motion Granted!

On September 8, 2021, the Honorable Ramon Escapa, in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit County of McLean County, ruled in favor of Jamie Snow, for the first time in 22 years. Jamie’s lawyers from the Exonoration Project argued fervently, that the contents of 8000 missing discovery documents would weigh heavily upon his proof of innocence, and that by law, his defense is entitled to them. Judge Escapa presented a four prong litmus test to determine if he should grant the motion, including the scope of the request, length of time since conviction, the burden on the state, and availability of the documents from other sources. He issued a fair and just ruling with Jamie’s family and supporters present. Listen in to hear how this is the beginning of the end for Jamie’s wrongful conviction and incarceration.

McLean County turned over less than 900 pages before the trial, and again in 2007 when Jamie went pro se. Now we know there are nearly 8000 pages that have never been turned over to Jamie. Yet, the state continues to fight against Jamie and his attorneys having access to the very documents that the state has had access to all along. Patrick Pursley was convicted in 1994 of murder in Rockford, Illinois. He fought for 27 years behind the walls of Stateville to prove his innocence. He knew the linchpin in his case was the bullets retrieved from the crime scene. He also knew he didn’t commit the murder, so without a doubt the gun retrieved from his girlfriend’s home did not match the bullets and casings retrieved from the crime scene, even though Illinois State Police ballistics technician, Daniel Gunnell, testified definitively at trial that the gun was the weapon used in the crime “to the exclusion of all others.” Patrick went on to successfully initiate adding ballistics testing in the Illinois Post Conviction Act – which eventually led to his release.

Multiple fingerprints were collected as evidence from the Clark Oil Station on the night of the crime, but only one print was suitable for the FBI Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) in 1991. When testing was requested in 2008, McLean County State’s Attorney Bill Workman stated in court that “fingerprints” from the crime scene have been running in AFIS since 1991, but according to the documents, that doesn’t appear to be the case. In 2008, the Exoneration Project filed a motion for DNA testing of the blood, clothes, bullets, and fingerprints gathered at the crime scene in 1991. That was finally whittled down to an agreement to test the blood sample that was collected from the floor. And that sample, incredibly, turned out to match the victim’s blood. We know from reports from the first officer on the scene, the paramedics, and the medical examiner that Bill Little did not bleed out, and had no lacerations or open wounds on his body at the time of his death. In this episode we explore the blood sample collected from the floor - Exhibit #2 - and its transformation into Exhibit #2A. What happened to the original blood sample, and how could it have matched the victim if he had no lacerations on his body?

Jamie’s trial lasted nine days and the jury deliberated for two days. They heard forty-three states witnesses and fifteen defense witnesses. They heard Jamie’s attorneys hassle witnesses. They didn’t hear critical questions or objections to key witness testimony, recorded police radio calls or interviews, or any evidence or investigation that directly discredited witnesses. They also didn’t hear Jamie’s constant letters to the judge, begging McClean county for relief from his broken-down legal team. Jamie’s pair of lawyers were a stroke patient and a mentally ill alcoholic, who berated him throughout the trial, and tried to abandon him right before sentencing. Former small-town Quincy, Illinois prosecutor, Curt Lovelace, was arrested in 2013 for the murder of his deceased wife. Cory Lovelace had passed away in her bed eight years before, until a cold case detective with seemingly ulterior motives reviewed the case. Curt’s bond was set at $5 million, and he would spend two years in jail enduring two trials. At the time of Curt's arrest, he had recently remarried to Christine, his high school homecoming date who he had reconnected with years later on social media. Christine and Curt would celebrate their first and second anniversaries while he was in jail awaiting trial. This is the incredible tale of Curt and Christine’s love story in their own words - the struggle to protect their children during that tumultuous time, clashes with the media, the fight for the truth, their battle to exonerate Curt, and how they turned into remarkable advocates for the wrongfully convicted.

To date, Curt and Christine have freed one wrongfully convicted client and have had three acquittals through the Lovelace Center for Criminal Defense.

As drafted, bill HB2399, “Provides that a person serving a term of natural life imprisonment is eligible for parole or mandatory supervised release.” If passed, Jamie would be eligible for a parole hearing in less than four years. Mitigating factors are considered by a judge during sentencing in efforts to reduce the sentence based on circumstance. Jamie did not kill Bill Little. However, the State of Illinois presented petty troubles he faced as a minor as disturbing delinquent behavior, which they claimed proved Jamie has always been down a bad path, incapable of any rehabilitation. In response, Jamie’s legal team had him evaluated by a PhD mitigation expert, but they never brought her to the hearing. Because of this, the state was able to persuade the judge that the untimely death of Jamie’s mother was an excuse he used for sympathy. This twenty second episode of Snow Files discusses the tragic realities of losing a parent during childhood, and questions how Jamie would have been judged, had these truths been known.

On May 10th, 2001, Jamie Snow was sentenced to natural life in prison for a murder he did not commit. Jamie had lost all faith in his incompetent public defenders, but had one last Hail Mary in him. Jamie filed a motion to fire his lawyers two months prior, only to find out they beat him to it, and they were already trying to quit. The state and the judge would not allow it. So Jamie and his team went to the sentencing hearing unprepared, expecting a 20-60 year sentence, only to be blindsided with life without the possibility of parole. The prosecutor had thirty three pages of arguments, and Jamie’s team had two. This twenty-first episode of Snow Files exposes the repetitive systemic failures that lead to Jamie’s wrongful conviction, and the severe injustice that is still so hard to undo today, twenty years later.

On January 15th, 2001, closing remarks were delivered in the murder case against Jamie Snow in the circuit court of the eleventh judicial court, before the Honorable Donald D. Bernardi and the Jury in McLean County, Illinois. State’s Attorney Teena Griffin delivered over one hundred pages of lecture to the jury, embellished with her own false narratives, great literary quotes, creepy crawly innuendos, sticks and stones, and even prayers. Defense Attorney Frank Picl pleaded with the jury to remember there was no physical evidence, and their only task was to determine which words they believed, as words were the only evidence presented by the state. The jury deliberated for 11 hours over two days and returned a guilty verdict. This twentieth episode of Snow Files brings McLean County’s most dramatic and final act in the wrongful conviction of Jamie Snow, right to your ears.

In 2001, Jamie Snow took the stand in his own defense against the charge of murder. Jamie’s legal team was extremely underprepared, and explained to him that if he did not testify, he wouldn’t win his case. He had one night’s notice that he would take the stand. But Jamie was hopeful. He figured if he told the truth, he didn’t have to prepare, he would be good. Jamie was on the stand for a very long time. He rebutted every witness presented in previous episodes of Snow Files, and in great detail, recounted his prior conviction, his participation in the lineup, his alibi, and the cast on his arm, all while maintaining eye contact with his jury. But Jamie Snow was still convicted. Part two of this nineteenth episode of Snow Files, presented by Jamie Snow himself, and foreshadows the importance of the closing arguments to come.

Julie Knight first told police about Susan Claycomb's alleged "confessions" in 1997 after Knight had been taken to the Bloomington Police station because of unspecified legal trouble. Knight made another statement in April 1999 a few days after losing custody of her children. Shortly after, it became a family affair. Knight's mother, brother and father also made statements to police implicating Susan, even though Susan had allegedly confessed to them nearly 10 years earlier. Why didn't this upstanding family report these confessions to police nearly a decade earlier? Julie Knight was exposed as a person with a propensity for lying at the first trial, so the state dumped her. Her bestie, Bridget Logsdon, took her place at Jamie’s trial. Bridget reported a short conversation between Julie and Jamie’s wife that she supposedly overheard at a bar. The switch from Julie to Bridget was a strategic move made by the State, and it worked. This eighteenth episode of Snow Files traces gal pal gossip from its origination, through a family feud, the local bars, and all the way to a wrongful conviction.

S1-EP17: Be Afraid. Be Mary Afraid: Mclean County Correctional Officer - Mary Burns

Just days before the trial, defense witness Mary Burns, an all too friendly corrections officer, was contacted by the state. Reports suggest that she resigned from the McLean County Jail in 2000, after having an affair with an inmate she supervised. Custodial sexual misconduct is a class 3 felony in Illinois. Mary Burns reported having many conversations with Jamie and his co-defendant while she supervised them. But Mary would only testify to two, which included thoughts about who may have done it, and a joke about being chased by police. She said other inmates were present when Jamie confessed, but then recanted on the stand, saying that it was just her and Jamie present during the conversation. All three men she originally named said the conversation never happened, two of these men tell their story for the first time here.This seventeenth episode of Snow Files exposes how the state underhandedly used a disgraced law enforcement agent to provide credibility in their case against Jamie Snow.

S1-EP16: Lies My Preacher Told Me: The Reverend Bill Gaddis

In 1999, a "self-appointed" gang boss turned Reverend returned to the state of Illinois to testify against Jamie. Jamie never met Bill Gaddis in his entire life. Bill Gaddis was loosely connected to some of Jamie’s friends only through relation to his brother. Two of his brothers would go on record to say Bill Gaddis was a liar and new nothing about this case. But he took the stand for the state anyway, and said he saw Jamie in his brother’s apartment in 1991, and a man who was since deceased, accused Jamie of the murder, and he didn’t respond, so he knows Jamie did it. Bill Gaddis named several men who witnessed this incident, all who were either dead or testified it never happened. Bill Gaddis was portrayed as credible due to his license to preach, although he would not disclose where he preached. This sixteenth episode of Snow Files exposes exactly why Reverend Bill Gaddis was willing to bare false witness against that neighbor.

S1-EP15: I Got Life with a Little Help from my Friends – Kevin Schaal and Jody Winkler

For six months in 1995, Kevin Schaal was Jamie’s cellmate. Jamie settled in Florida the next year and began a successful career in tree cutting. When Schaal was released, he brought his entire family to Jamie’s doorstep and Jamie helped him. Jamie met Jody Winkler in 1999 while he was down on his luck and on the run. Jamie gave him work and a place to live that summer. But that summer, Schaal was already in more trouble. Schaal tried to get out of it by telling an ATF agent and the Clark Gas Station cold case detectives that Jamie implicated himself in a murder. Just months later, in September, Jamie was indicted, and that November, Winkler was finally caught for his felony charges. Winkler caught on quick and he had a peculiar false confession to report, saying Jamie indicated involvement in a murder. This fifteenth episode of Snow Files traces the timeline from friend to foe, and exposes the paper trail leading to deals cut in return for Jamie’s conviction.

S1-Ep13: Karen Calls the Cops: Karen Strong

In 1999, BPD held an in person meeting with Karen Strong. Karen reported that her ex-boyfriend, Mark “Stretch” McCowan, supposedly told her years earlier that Jamie was involved in the Clark Station murder-robbery. Two months later, Stretch told a grand jury that they never had that conversation. But Karen told them it happened. She added in that Jamie was once in a lot of trouble and tried to hide out at their place too. Nine months later, Karen and her friends got wiretapped, and when she didn't know the cops were listening, she told a different story. A month later, she told the BPD she had a lot of time to think it over since the Grand Jury trial and she had more to tell them, that it didn’t look very good for Stretch or Jamie. She testified again just six months later. This time, she told Jamie’s jury that he actually tried to hide out at her house the night of the crime. Again, Stretch told the jury it didn’t happen. Years later, a friend came forward to report that Karen actually said she didn’t know anything about the crime. This thirteenth episode of Snow Files reveals the he-said-she-said lover’s quarrel that was presented to Jamie’s jury, and examines why Karen might have had motive to interfere with authorities.

S1-EP12: Nothing Left to Booze: Bruce Roland

In 1994, repeat DUI offender Bruce Roland wrote to the McLean State's Attorney's Office twice, pleading for leniency, saying he could get them an indictment in the Clark gas station murder. But when they sent detective Crowe to interview him, nothing happened, because Roland only reported rumors he heard from others. But in 1999, he was in jail for another DUI. This time he really needed the favor. So he said Jamie confessed to him. A polygraph showed Roland was lying, but he testified against Jamie anyways. Other witnesses refuted his story, and testified that it was impossible, but Jamie was still convicted. Ten months later, Bruce Roland and his wife got their own plea deals in return. This twelfth episode of Snow Files highlights the repetitive nature and tactics consistently used by snitches and prosecutors alike to get by in McLean county.

He took the stand, admitted he had a bad history, but said that since this was the first time he ever snitched, the jury should trust him as much as Jamie did when he confessed. Some guys he knew from the world might have been involved in a robbery, and he recalled bunking with one before. He felt it was just his luck. So Bill Moffit called the cops, asked about the reward, and said that Jamie confessed to the robbery gone bad, and he just needed peace of mind. He had it so bad that he came three times, to testify in court. This tenth episode of Snow Files brings new meaning to the walk of shame.

In 1999, while the grand jury was hearing testimony for Jamie Snow’s indictment, a cold case detective with a vendetta started his day bright and early. He had important business to take care of with his paid informant. Detective Rick Barkes woke up Randy Howard at 5:30 AM and to check and see if Jamie told him a joke or a murder confession 8 years prior. Randy had received $500 from a lead homicide detective around the same time he supposedly heard this joke. He said he agreed to whatever this detective asked him just to make him leave. Randy Howard played the system for the next two years, telling Jamie’s jury, “if I would have known we would have ended up here today, I would have said things a lot differently […] I never, never expected to be here.” This ninth episode of Snow Files presents the value in a dollar for an informant who thinks they’ll never make it to trial.

Steve Scheel arrived at the home of his niece, Molly (Pfister) Esche / Eads, and within one hour, an old childhood acquaintance casually confessed to murdering a kid, while they were just catching up on life for five to ten minutes. The friend was supposedly Jamie Snow. But Jamie doesn’t even know Scheel, and he wasn’t at that party. Scheel was arrested for sex crimes later that summer, and told this story to authorities several times between his arrest, trial, and parole. And Molly even vouched for him at Jamie’s trial. This eighth episode of Snow Files shows just how easy it was for someone so desperate, to actually play catch-up on Jamie’s life.

S1-EP7: Drive by Confession: Ed Palumbo and Shannon Schmidt-Wallace

In 1991, a BPD task force made several arrests for a string of armed robberies. Ed Palumbo, an acquaintance of Jamie's, confessed a robbery while in jail. One month later, he told police that he knew Jamie was involved in crimes, and that he even confessed to a murder through his car window as they passed each other on the street. He later came back and said his girlfriend, Shannon Schmidt-Wallace, heard the whole conversation herself. Jamie was investigated, and it was decided that the story was fabricated. But this witness wen to prison again for may years, and a week before his released date, he was forced to retell that old story at Jamie's trial, but this time with an incredible amount of new details. His girlfriend showed up too. This seventh episode of Snow Files reveals just how much pressure it takes to get someone in prison to flip, and the creativity police and prosecutors will use to get results that can be concealed at trial.

Jamie was implicated in a robbery he did not commit, arrested, and made to participate in a lineup for an unrelated murder. He was cleared. Charges were dropped. The night of the crime, two witnesses spoke to police officers after realizing the gas station clerk was shot dead. Both witnesses had seen someone suspicious, but not dangerous. A boy, looking out his bedroom window, saw someone leave the gas station and turn the corner into the night. He then heard police sirens and saw an ambulance. Minutes earlier, a customer at the gas pump looked on as someone harassed the clerk inside. When he went to pay, the man shielded his face and waited at the end of the counter. The clerk was shaking, and could not talk or properly take his payment. After ten years, these witnesses took the stand. One said it was Jamie who fled into the night. The other refused, and maintained he could never identify Jamie as the man he saw harassing the clerk. This third episode of Snow Files wraps up the key witnesses from the crime scene, and exposes the elaborate reconstruction of witness testimony told to the jury, through the State’s Attorney.

Five months before Jamie Snow’s trial, the man living next door to the gas station suddenly recalled seeing Jamie flee the scene of the crime, even though he previously chose other suspects from the line up, and even confided in a friend that it definitely wasn’t him. After a private meeting with the States Attorney, Danny Martinez pointed the finger directly at Jamie Snow. This second episode of Snow Files compares all five versions of his story against investigator and police testimony, and explains just how faulty eyewitness testimony can lead to a wrongful conviction.
