Chris wrote for both seasons of Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas on HBO, executive produced by John Oliver. While traveling in Los Angeles, Dennis sat down in his AirBnB to talk with Ron about working the road as a early comic, working in the music industry, podcasting with interesting people, performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Fest, early days of online streaming news shows, making his first feature film, and more.

Ron started comedy while still college and quickly after graduation decided to become a independent road comic. Now settled in LA, Ron still performs on the road, but took time off the road to make and promote is film Left at the Wall, which can be found streaming online.

ABOUT RON
Ron Placone is a comedian, writer, and filmmaker. A joke-slinging vagabond, he’s toured nearly everywhere in the US, Australia, Canada, and his solo-show, “Balding is Punk Rock”, premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2023 (****). His co-headlining tour with Graham Elwood sold out venues in Melbourne, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Miami. Ron’s been seen on the Discovery Channel, CrossTalk, Redacted Tonight, and he’s a regular contributor to Status Coup News. His debut album, “Agnostic Holiday”, is in rotation on SiriusXM.
In 2022, Ron took the dive into production. Since then, he’s released the webisode/pilot, Loner, his vertical series, Frank Azurri, premiered in Rome and then was later released on Status Coup News, and his debut feature, Left At Wall, enjoyed sold out screenings in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh, an international screening in London, and is available on Apple TV, YouTube Movies, Google Play, XBox, DVD, and more NOW!
Bit by the bug, he’s got a documentary in the works and is working on his next feature, Termination Fee, which will simultaneously be launched as a stage play. He also continues the co-production of the web-comic, Lucy & Ron, with a book series forthcoming.
His podcast is 1000 w/ Ron Placone, where he goes on a quest to interview 1000 different people who have inspired or piqued his interest in some way.
He lives in the LA neighborhood of San Pedro where he enjoys having the beach and punk shows within walking distance. Loves: Cats, Unions, Cannoli, Music, Hockey, Soccer. Loathes: War, Capitalism, Corruption.

Danielle Soto is a stand-up comedian, writer, and podcast host from Boston, Massachusetts. Before moving to Los Angeles in the spring of 2014, Danielle worked the New England comedy circuit, as well as traveling to festivals in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. She has performed as an opening act for Ralphie May and Lenny Clarke, and was chosen to participate in Comedy Central’s Up Next satellite show to search for Comics To Watch in 2013. Danielle’s comedy routine centers on her dating life, dieting, day jobs, and her Chilean Jewish family.

With mixed emotions, she boarded the plane with her one-way ticket to Los Angeles. Since then, Danielle has performed at The World Famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, Flappers in Burbank, and at The Improv in Brea, as well as many clubs and bars in the surrounding areas.

Danielle has also created the Dr. Cheesecake Podcast (available on iTunes), in which her guests explain a problem in their life and Danielle solves it using an episode of The Golden Girls (and a slice of cheesecake!) Notable guests have been Golden Girls writer Stan Zimmerman and Alaska from RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5. Danielle also writes, produces, and hosts Golden Girls trivia at Hamburger Mary’s in West Hollywood.

In her spare time, Danielle likes to host game night with friends, spend time with her wonderful family, and tell strangers about the time she offered Bret Michaels her virginity, which he very politely declined.

Growing up as a theatre kid in Orange County, California, Tahlena Chikami spent much of the past decade landing roles on film and television, including a number of beloved series like Parks and Recreation and Gilmore Girls. In 2019, however, her IMDB page takes a turn. A year after forming Bite Me Bambi with with ex-pats from a number of Orange County ska titans like Save Ferris and My Superhero, the band had already made the scene. Recent projects include Blue & Red, a memoir comic about emotional abuse (which won a 2023 MICE Mini-grant award (https://www.micexpo.org/showcase-2023) for excellence in mini-comics from Massachusetts Indie Comics Expo), illustrating the Adventure College Student Handbook (a Kickstarter project that made over EIGHT TIMES its original fundraising goal!), drawing and co-writing I Feel Fine (an Instagram webcomic about a high-schooler growing up with chronic illness, inspired by her co-writer’s own experience with EDS), and creating pieces for Rotary Arts (a multimedia arts collective of queer artists). Ellie also frequently vends at art markets around Boston, MA.
During the day Ellie is a graphic designer assistant at Charlesbridge Publishing. She graduated with a BFA in Communication Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and is originally from around Dallas, Texas. She loves reading indie comics, connecting with other LGBTQ people, and traveling, especially by train.

Will Abeles has been a nationally touring comedian, podcaster and producer for over 15 years. Known as The Pride of Hagerstown, Will honed his craft in New York City and Los Angeles while working for such television shows as The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Academy Awards. His debut comedy album “Regrets of My Father” debuted at #1 on the iTunes Comedy Charts in December of 2017. Now known as “The Pride of Hagerstown,” Will moved to Nashville in January of 2021 and by October was voted the third best comedian in Nashville by the Nashville Scene behind Nate Bargatze. ABOUT ADAM

Adam Cagley grew up strumming his ukulele, drawing comics and relaxing on his massage chair as he dreamed of becoming an actor. At the mere age of 8, while performing at a Dinner Theatre in Lancaster He was spotted by his first agent. He ended up booking his very first audition, a camera commercial and never looked back. From there, Adam went on to star in several national commercials like AT&T and caught the attention of producers which jump started him into guest starring roles on Nickelodeon shows such as "All That," "Ned's De-Classified" and then onto the Disney shows "Suite Life of Zack and Cody," "Hanna Montana" and recently "Good Luck Charlie." He also had fun keeping up with Tracey Ullman on her show "State of the Union." Most recently, Adam played Ron Kuzner, a recurring character on the hit Showtime series "Shameless". He's served as a writer and producer on numerous independent films and has become an accomplished stand up comedian, performing in both the Boston and Burbank Comedy Festivals.

The Baltimore community knows Justin Schlegel’s voice very well, given he’s co-hosted the popular morning radio program, Justin, Scott & Spiegel, since the show’s inception in 2013. Viewers can tune in at 98 Rock to hear Schlegel from 5:30 in the morning to 10 AM.

As a natural entertainer, Schlegel first explored the radio industry when he got into the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland. He was often at the top of his class and tutored other students, so it’s no surprise that upon completion of his studies, he was hired for stations WYCR and WHVR to perform board operation duties. Since he didn’t align with the company, after five years, he quit his job and went to a bar, where he found himself performing standup comedy. Suddenly, he performed 15 shows a month, hired an agent, was touring nationally, and even made it into the prestigious comedy festival, Just For Laughs, in Montreal.

One night, he was approached after a comedy set by 98 Rock hosts, Kirk McEwen and Mickey Cucchiella, and they asked him to feature on their show. He impressed the station, returned to his broadcasting roots, and spent years recurring all over 98 Rock before he was offered his own late night program: The Justin Schlegel Fiasco. Eventually, he was moved up to afternoons, and then he received the coveted spot as morning host.

Cambridge-born comedian talks the past, future, and getting deep on Clubhouse Some comedians are famous, others are infamous. Few comedians fall in both categories like Dane Cook. To Dane, it doesn’t matter which camp you’re in, he’s learned to keep on trucking on to the next comedy show and appreciate all he’s been given and everything he’s worked for. It’s too easy to find some controversy or dramatic event in a comedian’s past, some their own doing, others put upon them. The Cambridge-born Cook, who grew up in Arlington and moved to NYC to pursue his career after not being able to get booked here because local headliners at the time refused to follow him, has been through both scenarios and is ready to move on. He has apologized for insensitive jokes, opened up about his financial debacle with his older half-brother Darryl, and received apologies from the comedians who’ve claimed he’s done them wrong. Some of that matters in the public eye, to others it doesn’t. He’ll forever be a hilarious comedian to most, or a joke thief to others. Cook is seen as a hard-working innovator by many, and a hack by others (many of whom are jealous they’re not on his level, in my opinion). While the Employee of the Month star has opened about all this in the past, we rapped about the ways he’s dealt with difficult relationships, while Cook offered advice on how to handle those situations, and spoke about how he’s excited to get past the “COVID pause.” He’ll be home, performing at the Boch Center Wang Theater, at the end of October in April. On this episode of the podcast is musician, comedian, and former doorman of Hal Daddy’s, Jack Ballard. This is a very long overdue conversation. In the early 2000s, while I was still in college, I had an internet radio show, long before anyone’s computers could play streaming audio (well, it was on FM, but the signal was so weak you couldn’t pick it up in the parking lot). We kept trying to make plans to have Jack on to tell some of these stories, but alas, it never came to fruition… UNTIL NOW! Jack and I met back in the late ’90s when I was just a teenager going to the infamous Baltimore Rock Bar, Hal Daddy’s; where he worked as a doorman.He and I go through the history of Charm City’s seediest bar that any band, and almost every band, could play at. We also talk about Baltimore’s history with entertainment, Artscape, the difference between comedians and musicians, and so much more. Comedian, Actor, Historian Wayne Federman Wayne is a 35 year veteran of stand-up comedy, most well known for the documentary I Am Road Comic, his Comedy Central special, and dozens of short appearances on movies and TV. In addition to his work as a performer, he also teaches Stand-up History and Performance at the University of Southern California. Since I haven’t uploaded an interview in a very long time (I’m working on the new home studio, so I’ll be back soon), I figured in the meantime let’s take a departure from the norm and upload this Roast Battle my friend Justin P. Drew hosted. This was the one year anniversary of his open mic at The Blarney Stone in Dorchester. Afterwards we had cake and beer. I almost didn’t want to upload this because I did a disappointingly bad job against my opponent. I had 6 pages of jokes against everyone else but her. I couldn’t do it. Shame. Since they met they moved to New York to pursue their respective comedy careers, got married, had 3 boys (2 of which are twins), and had a reality show. We talk about scheduling, touring, dragging kids around on the road together, sharing responsibilities between themselves and the people in their lives that help them out. It was fascinating listen to two people, who clearly love each other, talk about how they struggle to be both good comedians and good parents. Ben and I met before I started doing comedy through mutual friends, one a comedian, one who wasn’t. We instantly got a long. We didn’t really keep in touch other than over Twitter and Facebook, so when I started to do standup, I messaged him asking if he wanted to hit an open mic with me, to which he replied, “are you in New York? Because that’s where I live now.” Ben moved there years ago to pursue comedy and eventually, became a writer for Buzzfeed and a advertising data analysis for Twitter. In the podcast we get into those jobs, comedy, New York comedy, how internet advertising works, his upcoming marriage, and more. Today on the podcast Videographer and musician Mike Rickshaw of the band Mickey Rickshaw. I met Mike at an open mic in Jamaica Plain about 8 or 9 months ago, and we finally now were able to get together for this podcast. I was hoping some members of the band were going to show up, so we could get a live acoustic performance in the home studio, but that didn’t happen. Which with musicians is not surprising. They (and that includes me) are an unreliable bunch at times. When I met Mike he was a videographer for furniture company Wayfair, but has since gone out on his own freelancing. We’ll talk more about that, being a musician and touring, his path into making videos, living in Italy and learning Italian, and a lot more. This episode of the podcast I got to get out of the studio and onto a boat with The Dirty Dottys. A Boston based Jazz, ska, swing, rock, pop, band. The group is comprised of four music teachers, a scientist, and a musical therapist. This was a fun podcast listening to how each of them are different types of music teachers, finding out what music therapy is, how it helps different types of injuries and rehabilitation, and of course hearing about the SCIENCE stuff that Austin does every day at work. After the podcast is a track from their first self-titled CD, Plight of a First World 20-Something, which is available now on iTunes, Bandcamp, and everywhere else you would buy music. Throughout the summer they are doing these Boston Harbor music cruises every Thursday, so if you’re in the New England area checkout one of the cruises. It’s a fun early evening show with free beer! After months of attempting to schedule a sit down together, I’m glad we finally were able to get together and learn more about what it is they do during the daytime, because I’m a big fan of what they do at night. We don’t actually get into Steven’s day job because he keeps that separate from his comedy life, which is foreign and weird to me. We talk about that, when and how he got into sketch comedy and how he met up with the fellow Mister Bismuth sketch group. Which, by the way, is one of the best sketch comedy groups in all of Boston if you ask me. They’re weird, absurd, dark, and totally hilarious. Check them out sometime if you can. Jackson and I used to work together in Baltimore at a different station, he left for Boston, and after a few years helped me get my job up here. This was one of my favorite podcasts because we really get into the passion that radio is to both of our careers. We also discuss how being a parent affects his job and vice versa. I’m really glad to have Jackson talk about this openly because, even though I’m not a parent, it’s something that worries me every day. Worried about it ruining my career, worried I won’t like my child or I’ll feel resentment towards him. Thanks so much for listening to this week’s long awaited episode of the podcast. I say long awaited because it’s taken 3 weeks to get the computer I use for everything fixed, working, and put back together so I can get this episode online. Regardless, I’m glad to finally get this interview up with a very funny comedian, actress, and nanny, India Pearl. I met India here in Boston, shortly afterwards she moved to peruse acting and comedy in LA where she is also a Nanny, and a Party Princess, and works at a comedy club, and is working hard. We talk a lot about LA, the difference between there and Boston, how her job affects comedy and acting, and we talk deep about the club scenes as well. India was in a horror movie that just came out, The Inhabitants, which is available on Amazon. It was filmed here in the Boston area. If you’re into horror, this would be a good movie for you to check out. This was a fun podcast for me because I learned a lot of things I never knew nor thought about when it came to working with children. In fact, I try to think very little about kids in general.

J Today on the podcast is my friend Jordan Handren-Seavey (which I probably said incorrectly, because that’s what I do sometimes). Jordan is a comedian from Maine, now living in Boston, who spends his days driving a delivery truck for a bakery. As you can imagine there’ll be a few choice words about Boston traffic in the podcast. He also at one time was a professional skier and grew up on a real, working farm. Jordan is a funny guy, with some interesting stories; so I’m really glad I was able to get him in here to talk about comedy and trying to get by in the real world. Thanks again for downloading this episode of the podcast. A few months ago I sat down with a comedian from England, Robyn Perkins. Robyn is actually from Boston, moved to England, decided to start doing stand up comedy. We talked a lot of about the difference between how the comedy scene is in the UK compared to how it is here in the America (specifically Boston). I also asked Robyn a bit about her experiences being a woman in comedy, because as most people know, it’s very different than being a man in comedy. At the time of this recording Robyn had just quit her day-job to do comedy and promoting the regular shows she runs full-time. Last night I caught up with her while she was here visiting for the holidays. The good news is she hasn’t had to go back to working a real job to support comedy, THAT’S GREAT!! We also talk a little about Edinburgh Comedy Festival; which, if you don’t know, is a month long comedy festival in Scotland. If you never heard of it or been (like I haven’t) you’ll find it interesting I think. Sooner or later I’ll remember to take a pic with my guests and post that here too, someday… I suppose. Thanks for downloading the first episode of So What Do You Really Do? with my guest John Paul Rivera. John and I recorded this interview in my backyard in Boston a lot of months ago. Literally six or seven months ago. One night me, John, and couple other comedians were hanging around, talking and what not, when I mentioned the podcast. Right then I decided to have John Paul on because I knew if I didn’t set an actual record date, nothing would get done. I hate to admit, sometimes I’m a “up to the last minute deadline” kind of guy. John Paul, who is not only a hilarious comedian, is also a mascot for a local bowling alley in Boston. We talked about that, how he got into it, and how the hours he works before Red Sox games is actually kind of convenient for doing comedy. We also talk about his mother, who was also a comedian and a comedy side project of John Paul’s called The New York Past, which is a parody twitter account that posts funny, fictional New York Post style headlines. He has since stopped doing the posts (which is another topic we get into), but you can still check them out on twitter. Hey everyone. Thanks for at least checking out the So What Do You Really Do? podcast page; you’re one step closer to becoming a listener. I’m the host Deadair Dennis Maler, so get used to what my typing looks like. I’m a comedian from Baltimore, now living in Boston, and 16+ year radio veteran. I’m fortunate enough to know A LOT of people with interesting jobs, but also are working to become comedians, actors, artists, and other things. As you’ll hear in Episode 00, I want you to hear about these people. It’s a small clip show/introduction to what you can expect on each episode of the podcast. All of us are working so hard to make it in entertainment, and it isn’t easy. Because of that, there’ll be a lot of funny stories and interesting things. Especially the people I know that have, like, real adult careers. They don’t need to “make it” (whatever that’s supposed to mean), but they work so hard perfecting their craft because THAT is what they want to do.
