Today we will be discussing the Russian Five's background, NHL career, and the post cup accident.

Segment 1: Background

During the Cold War, the best hockey players in the Soviet Union were not allowed to leave to play in the National Hockey League
Before 1989, Victor Nechayev, who played three games for the Los Angeles Kings, was the only player from the USSR to play in the NHL.

The five players were:

Sergei Fedorov - Center,
Vladimir Konstantinov - Defensemen,
Slava Kozlov - Winger,
Slava Fetisov - Defensemen,
Igor Larionov - Winger,

Segment 2: NHL Career

Coached by Scotty Bowman, who is widely regarded as the greatest hockey coach of all time, played the five Russians together as a unit for much of the 1995–96 season.
By that time, there were 55 Russians playing in the NHL.
At the end of the regular season, the five Russians had scored a whopping 117 of the Red Wings' 325 goals
The team won an NHL-record 62 games, but eventually fell to the Colorado Avalanche in six games in the Western Conference Finals, the series before the stanley cup.
In the 1997 playoffs, the Russian Five were a critical part of each series.

1997 Stanley Cup Finals

Detroit faced the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals.
Prior to the series, most hockey commentators believed that the Flyers would be too much for the wings to handle
However, the Red Wings surprised most observers by being the more physical team and possibly breaking the stereotype that Russians and Europeans in general are “soft” hockey players.
One man that stood out in that category was Konstantinov
The Red Wings shockingly swept the Flyers and won their first Stanley Cup in 42 years.
At the conclusion of Game 4, the Stanley Cup was presented to the winning team's captain, Steve Yzerman, who hoisted it above his head and skated the traditional victory lap around Joe Louis Arena.
He then handed the Cup to Slava Fetisov, the now-39-year-old former captain of the Red Army club.
The Red Wings players and coaches dedicated their efforts the following season to Konstantinov and Mnatsakanov.
The Red Wings managed the rare feat of repeating as Stanley Cup Champions, sweeping the Washington Capitals in the finals.
Three of the five – Fetisov, Larionov, and Fedorov – were elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame after they retired.
You may be confused with this whole wheelchair talk so let's take a few steps back.

Segment 3: Limo accident and beyond

Six days after the Stanley Cup win, most of the team gathered for a golf outing and dinner at The Orchards Golf Club in nearby Washington Township. Limousines were ordered so that no one partying would have to drive. Fetisov, Konstantinov, and team massage therapist Sergei Mnatsakanov left the party in a limousine driven by Richard Gnida, who had a suspended license after two convictions for drunk driving. The limo veered across three lanes of traffic, skipped the curb, and crashed into a tree. All four occupants were taken to nearby Beaumont Hospital; Fetisov suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung but made a full recovery. Mnatsakanov spent several weeks in a coma, and was permanently paralyzed from the waist down.

Beyond how Russians were perceived, the five also changed how hockey was taught in North America, in no small part because of the value they placed on puck possession.

In a 2020 interview, coach Scotty Bowman pointed out that the Russian Five brought a different style of breakout to the NHL

Today we will be discussing the Early Life Playing Career and downfall of Mike Vick.

Segment 1: Early life

Vick was born in Newport News, Virginia
In a 2001 interview, Vick told the Newport News Daily Press that when he was 10 or 11, "I would go fishing even if the fish weren't biting, just to get away from the violence and stress of daily life in the projects."
Vic was only 3 years old when his father started to teach him the fundamentals of football.
As a freshman, he impressed many with his athletic ability; he threw for over 400 yards in a game that year.
Ferguson High School was closed in 1996 as part of a Newport News Public Schools building modernization program. Due to this, Vick, a sophomore at the time, and coach Tommy Reamon both moved to Warwick High School.
Under Reamon's coaching, he passed for 4,846 yards with 43 touchdowns. He added 1,048 yards and 18 scores on the ground.
Vick chose to attend Virginia Tech
He led the Hokies to an 11–0 undefeated season and to the Bowl Championship Series national title game in the Nokia Sugar Bowl against Florida State.
Vick won both an ESPY Award as the nation's top college player and the first-ever Archie Griffin Award as college football's most valuable player.
He was invited to the 1999 Heisman Trophy presentation and finished third in the voting behind Ron Dayne and Joe Hamilton.
Vick left Virginia Tech after his redshirt sophomore season.

Segment 2: NFL Career

Vick was selected first in the 2001 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, becoming the first African-American quarterback to be taken with the top pick.
Vick set a then-NFL record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single game with 173 against the Minnesota Vikings on December 1, broken by Colin Kaepernick (181) in 2013. He tied for third in team history for the best touchdown-to-interception ratio in a season. He had a streak of 177 passes without an interception as the Falcons finished with a 9–6–1 win-loss-tie record and reached the playoffs.
On January 4, 2003, Vick led the Falcons to an upset victory over the heavily favored Green Bay Packers 27–7 in the first playoff round. The Falcons lost 20–6 to the Donovan McNabb-led Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football Conference divisional playoff game the following week. Vick was named to his first Pro Bowl after the season.
Vick suffered a fractured right fibula during a preseason game before the 2003 season against the Baltimore Ravens. He missed the first 11 games of the regular season, making his debut in week 13.
Vick returned to form in 2004, passing for 2,313 yards with 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He added 902 yards of rushing and three touchdowns as the Falcons finished with an 11–5 record.
On October 31, 2004 in a game against the Denver Broncos, he became the first quarterback to throw for more than 250 yards and rush for over 100 yards in the same game.
Vick, whose single-season rushing total was the third-highest for a quarterback in NFL history, was named to his second Pro Bowl after the season after leading Atlanta to their third division title.
He signed a nine-year $130 million extension on December 23.

Segment 3: Legal Stuff

A search warrant executed on April 25, 2007, as part of a drug investigation of Vick's cousin Davon Boddie led to discovery of evidence of unlawful dog fighting activities at a property owned by Vick in rural Surry County in southeastern Virginia
Media attention quickly grew as state officials investigated, soon joined by federal authorities.
As separate state and federal investigations progressed, more details emerged about an interstate dog-fighting ring that involved drugs and gambling.
Gruesome details of abuse, torture, and execution of under-performing dogs
Vick and several others were indicted on federal and Virginia state felony charges
In July 2007, Vick and three other men were indicted on federal felony charges of operating an unlawful interstate dog fighting
Vick was accused of financing the operation, directly participating in dog fights and executions, and personally handling thousands of dollars in related gambling activities.

Today we will be discussing 3 rivalries, Michigan - Ohio State, Alabama - Auburn, and Army - Navy

Segment 1:Michigan OHIO state

-During the mid-2000s, ESPN aired several commercials describing certain situations that would be "normal, if it wasn't for sports". One commercial featured a man in an Ohio State shirt making out with a woman wearing a Michigan shirt.[54] An ESPNU commercial air portrayed a couple on a blind date that appears to be successful until it becomes clear that she is from Michigan and he is a fan of Ohio State.

Segment 2: Auburn Alabama

As the rivalry, which started in 1893, as we mentioned, was played for many years at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, the name "Iron Bowl" comes from Birmingham's historic role in the steel industry
They have played a total of 86 times as of December 2021

Segment 3: Army Navy

The Army–Navy Game is an American college football rivalry game between the Army Black Knights of the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York, and the Navy Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) at Annapolis, Maryland. The Black Knights, or Cadets, and Midshipmen each represent their service's oldest officer commissioning sources. As such, the game has come to embody the spirit of the interservice rivalry of the United States Armed Forces. The game marks the end of the college football regular season and the third and final game of the season's Commander-in-Chief's Trophy series, which also includes the Air Force Falcons of the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) near Colorado Springs, Colorado.

They don’t call him Broadway Joe for nothing! Follow us as we dive into the life and playing career of one of the NFL’s first superstars. Joe Namath was the embodiment of the 70’s with long flowing hair and big fur coats. Segment 1: Early life

Namath was born on May 31st, 1943 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania
Namath excelled in ALL sports at Beaver Falls High School
He even received offers from several MLB teams
Namath had many offers from Division 1 football schools and decided on The University of Maryland
After being rejected by Maryland, he went to Alabama
Coach Bear Bryant later said his decision to recruit Namath was "the best coaching decision I ever made."

Segment 2: Football Career

College

Namath led Bama to a 29-4 record over three seasons and won the 1964 national championship.
The St. Louis Cardinals selected Namath 12th overall in the NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected him 1st overall in the AFL draft.
The AFL–NFL merger was the merger of the two major professional football leagues in the United States

NFL

Namath would play for the NY Jets
Namath won the AFL Rookie of the year
He became the first quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards in a season EVER
He was an All-Star in 1965, 1967, 1968, and 1969
Namath had serious knee problems throughout his NFL career
He led the Jets to the Super Bowl lll vs the Colts

Super Bowl IIl

The 1968 Colts were looked at as "the greatest football team in history"
The Jets were 19.5 point underdogs, the largest in Super Bowl history
When asked about the game he famously said "We're going to win the game. I guarantee it.”
The Colts' terrifying defense was unable to contain either the Jets' running or passing game
The AFLs first ever super bowl victory
Namath was the Super Bowl MVP
His performance in the 1968 season earned him the Hickok Belt as top professional athlete of the year

Segment 3: Legacy

The NFL made a top 100 characters list, #1 was Joe Namath
Some would say he set the bar for what a superstar was
He was doing it back in the 60s and 70s when it wasn't heard of
He was elected to the pro football hall of fame in Canton Ohio in 1985, by Coach Bruno, Namath's High School coach decades earlier at Beaver Falls High School.

Segment 1:Upbringing

He Grew up in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas in An area of poverty.
He was a tag along to his two sisters who were both all star basketball Players who played division 1 in college. He would watch them play all the time.
While attending South Oak Cliff highschool he was cut from the basketball and football team which devastated the lonely freshman.
Coming out of highschool, Dennis was 5-9 tall and was kicked out of his mothers house. He started working as a janitor at Dallas-Fort worth airport.
He stole around 50 watches. He was arrested and almost faced criminal charges. But his friends gave back the watches in the knick of time.
That summer he shot up from 5,9-6,7
He decided to give basketball one more shot.His local community college coach took note of his skill during tryouts and saw something special in him.
He then transferred to SouthWestern Oklahoma State University. He did amazing there averaging 27.3 points per game and NBA teams started taking note.

Segment 2: NBA Playing Career

In the second round of the 1986 draft, the detroit pistons selected 25 year old Dennis Rodman, 27th overall
The pistons went on to win back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990
On October 1, 1993, the Pistons traded Rodman along with second year small forward Isaiah Morris and a future first and second round draft pick to San Antonio for a package of forwards Sean Elliot, David Wood and a future first round pick.
With the Spurs, Rodman established himself as a rebounding machine on a par with some of the greatest giants to play the game.
SOme would even say that at 6’7” and 215 pounds, he was simply too short and small to do what he was doing.
He earned NBA All-Defensive First Team honors seven times and won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award twice. He also led the NBA in rebounds per game for a record seven consecutive years and won five NBA championships.

Segment 3: “His Adventures”

One of his most noticeable characteristics is his hair. He’s had cheetah print, a smiley face, slime green, and bleach blonde hair.
Rodman began dyeing his hair following a near suicide attempt, which he wrote about in his 1997 biography: “I decided that [instead of killing myself] I was going to kill the imposter that was leading Dennis Rodman to a place he didn’t want to go.”
Rodman vowed never to be the “shy imposter” again and showed the world his true colors
In 1996, Rodman came out as bisexual
he decided to "marry himself," wearing a big, white wedding dress — out of self-love.
He also had a relationship with one of the biggest stars on the 90’s, Madonna,
The romance only lasted a few months, but last year, Rodman claimed the singer offered him $20 million to impregnate her.
In 1997, Rodman kicked a cameraman below the belt for no apparent reason. Resulting in the man being carted out of the stadium in front of thousands. And the year before that, he actually head-butted a referee.
Went by the name Rodzilla and wrestled Karl Malone who is regarded as one of the best power forwards in NBA history in a Match alongside Hulk Hogan
In 2003, Dennis Rodman tried to mount a comeback to the NBA. He was 45 years old and unsurprisingly failed.
Broke his reproductive organ on 3 separate occasions. One of which was while attempting a “trickshot” with a partner on a boat. It did not go as plan, resulting in an unfortunate injury for what some call, Dennis the Menace.
Became good friends with Kim jon un. During the 2018 summit between Trump and Kim, the White House adamantly denied that Rodman has any official role in the summit, but Rodman told reporters that he was "just happy to be a part of it because I think I deserve it."
Rodman was one of just a few westerners to ever meet with Kim, who has been openly hostile towards western nations, including the United States.
Kim is an apparent basketball super fan and really likes the chicago bulls.
Kim invited Rodman to Pyongyang, the capital of the isolated authoritarian state, for the pair's first meeting in March 2013.
Told kim Jong Un, "You have a friend for life."
During his January 2014 trip, Rodman courted controversy again when he infamously sang "Happy Birthday" to Kim on the basketball court and appeared to bow to the North Korean leader.
In 2017 Rodman presented North Korea's sports minister with a copy of Trump's 1987 book, "The Art of the Deal" as a gift to Kim jon un.
I give the man credit for having a friendly relationship with a world leader, but with that being said, Dylan, want to tell them about some things Kim Jun Un has done.

Kim Jong Un has executed over 300 people since coming to power-2016

From 1948 through 1987 the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was ruled by Kim Il-sung, an absolute communist dictator

People were so tightly controlled in all their activities, and those visitors that were allowed in were so managed, that comparatively little independent information about the regime's purges, executions, and concentration and forced labor camps filtered out of the country.

Episode 2: Malice at the Palace

In this episode of the Podcast we will be discussing: what led up to the fight, the game and fight itself, and the aftermath.

Segment 1: What led up to the fight

The date is November 19 2004 and the Indiana Pacers are playing the Detroit pistons.
The Pistons ended the Pacers amazing 2003-2004 season after eliminating them in the playoffs
The Pacers felt like that was their Championship, they came out fired up for the 04 - 05 season
One player however, was a ticking time bomb. He was known for his unusual behavior, that included fighting opponents, smashing TV cameras, applying for a job at Circuit City so he could get an employee discount, and even asking for time off from the NBA season to promote his rap album. That man would be 6’7 Ron Artest
The 24 year old Artest surpassed the Pistons Ben Wallace to win 2004 defensive player of the Year so a rivalry was already brewing.
Like we mentioned, the Pacers came out fired up for the 04-05 season. That included Artest more than anyone, and he was playing like an MVP to start off the new season
The Pacers wanted to show that they were the better team, and with just 45 seconds left in the game, they were up by double digits, the game was pretty much over
And that's when Ron Artest put up a big foul on Pistons All-Star Center, Ben Wallace and everything went south.

Segment 2: The game and fight

While players and refs were trying to defuse the situation ron artest is seen lying down on the scores table and putting on the announcer's headset which fits right in with his personality.
At this point, Artest has done nothing other than foul Ben Wallace
The refs, Ron Garretson, Tommy Nunez, and Tim Donaghy did a poor job managing the situation
At that moment, the teammates of Artest and Wallace seemed to have settled things down
That's when am angry fan threw their drink at a calmed down Ron Artest
If he were to engage this fan it could spell then end to the Pacers season. Its crucial that he is calmed down for the whole team's sake.
That's when Artest lost it,with no one to hold him back he jumped onto the scores table and into the stand throwing punches and attacking any fan that got in his way. (Audio)
Artest was already on the leagues bad side for multiple suspensions for fighting, on the court, however the punishment for going into the stands is much more severe. If his teammates joined in, it could wreck the season.
Sure enough 6’8 guard Stephen Jackson headed for the stands alongside Artest. The entire time this is happening fans are throwing bottles filled with liquid onto the court and at players. After Artest is pulled away they tryto bring him through the tunnel and into the lockerroom. Fans dumped entire bottles on him and chased him into the tunnel. Announcer John Mason summed itupbest when he said, there are no winners in this scenario.
Remember this all happened with under a minute left in the game, so the officials wisely ended the game arly, without playing the remaining time.
Officials pleaded with fans to stop throwing items and engaging in fights. No post game press conferences were held before all players had left the arena.
The Pacers woud win 97 -82, but at what cost

Segment 3: The aftermath

The fallout of the Malice at the Palace. Overall, nine players were suspended for a total of 146 games, meaning $11 million in total lost salary.
Artest was by far punished the hardest, sitting out the rest of the season (73 regular-season games and 13 playoff games) and losing nearly $5 million in unearned salary.
Five players were charged with assault, and eventually sentenced to a year of probation and community service.

Episode 1: Black Sox Scandal

In this episode of the Podcast we will be discussing “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, the outcome of the Scandal, and who deserves the series, if anyone.

Segment 1: “Shoeless” Joe Jackson

First off, let's dive into the name “Shoeless’ Joe Jackson. In a game played in Greenville, South Carolina, he had blisters on his foot from a new pair of cleats. They hurt so much that he decided to remove his shoes before he was next up to bat. In that at bat, he smacked a bases clearing triple… shoeless.
The great left fielder whose name will forever be linked to the scandal, batted .375 in the Series. Which is very impressive.
He was still accused of being part of the scandal. Jackson was approached by his teammates, said “no” to them twice, but accepted some money from the gamblers. As a result, he was kicked out of the major leagues.
To add insult to injury he was also banned from ever being in The Hall of Fame, an achievement more impressive than a championship
Talk about weather or not he should have been kicked out

Segment 2: The Outcome of the Scandal

Sports writer, Hugh Fullerton, he claims that white sox players were fixing the world series
8 members of the White Sox were banned for life from the league after being accused of taking $5,000 each in exchange for throwing the series
After 1919, the first ever commissioner of baseball was appointed. His name was Kennesaw Mountain Landis. He ruled over baseball and vowed to prevent another “Black Sox Scandal.” He was commissioner for 35 years
.MLB Rule 21 was put in place, it prohibits gambling and was made eight years after the 1919 World Series. It states that a player will be banned for life if he bets on a game that he is involved in.
The United States Department of Justice Archives, 923. 18. U.S.C. Section 371 - CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD THE PUBLIC - To conspire to defraud the United States means primarily to cheat the Government out of property or money, but it also means to interfere with or obstruct one of its lawful governmental functions by deceit, craft or trickery, or at least by means that are dishonest. It is not necessary that the Government shall be subjected to property or pecuniary loss by the fraud, but only that its legitimate official action and purpose shall be defeated by misrepresentation, chicane or the overreaching of those charged with carrying out the governmental intention.
While they were not charged with the crime after the confessions go “missing”

Segment 3: Do the Reds deserve the championship?

Talk about whether or not we think the Reds deserve the championship
In the record books they call it a fall classic win, not a world series win.
Reds record: 96-44
Black Sox record: 88-52
Reds won series 5-3, First ever best of 9 series
