In 1996, Balboa signed with Major League Soccer and the Colorado Rapids. Balboa played six seasons for the Rapids, leading as the team's all-time leader in many statistical categories.[citation needed] Traded to the MetroStars in 2002, he played only five minutes all year, sitting out the rest with injuries, and retiring afterwards.

Balboa ended his MLS career with 24 goals and 23 assists in 152 games. In 2005, Balboa was named to the MLS All-Time Best XI and elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame on the first ballot along with Nick Folan. In 2012, he was inducted into the Colorado Hall of Fame.[9]

A goal by Balboa for the Rapids in 2000 against the Columbus Crew was named the MLS Goal of the Year for that season.

It follows the story of two African-American high school students, William Gates and Arthur Agee, in Chicago and their dream of becoming professional basketball players.

Hoop Dreams was originally intended to be a 30-minute short film produced for PBS; the filming of the special led to five years of filming and 250 hours of footage. Hoop Dreams premiered at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary. It won numerous other awards in the 1994 season, although it was not nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, which led to a massive public outcry. Despite its length (171 minutes) and unlikely commercial genre, it received high critical and popular acclaim, and grossed over $11 million worldwide.

He was honored by PR News as the 2010 "Lemonade Maker," earning the award for leading Coldwell Banker public relations efforts to great results despite the recession's negative impact on the real estate market. It was also an honor to be invited to speak at the 2016 Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) International Conference on "Partnerships as the new PR."

 Prior to starting his own basketball training company, Martin had a successful 16-year professional career that began with the Quad City Thunder of the CBA where he won the CBA Championship in 1994 and was named to the CBA All-Defensive team. Martin then embarked on an 11-year career in the Liga ACB in Spain where he was named as one of the top rebounders in ACB history by Solobasket.com.

In 1993, Martin was a member Team USA’s gold medal winning team at the FIBA Americas Championship where he averaged 12.7 points per game to go along with 8.1 rebounds per game, five blocks and a 54.8 shooting percentage.

A three-year starter at Pittsburgh, Martin finished his time ranked 17th on the Pitt scoring list with 1,282 career points, 775 rebounds and 109 blocked shots. He was one of just eight Pitt players to score at least 20 points and grab at least 20 rebounds in a single game and tied the Pitt record for blocks in a game (7).

Out of high school, Martin was a 1987 McDonalds All-American, Street & Smith All-American and was a member of the Nation’s best recruiting class which included the likes of (Arizona basketball head coach) Sean Miller, Brian Shorter, Darelle Porter, and Jason Matthews.
