Remembering Dorothy Fontana (1939- 2019).

Passing away this past week at the age of eighty, Dorothy was one of the foundational creative forces behind the Star Trek universe and we celebrate her legacy by exploring her incredible Star Trek resume.

A writer and eventual story editor on The Original Series, Dorothy received a writing credit for 10 episodes but had a hand in countless more, directly responsible for such classics as This Side of Paradise, Journey to Babel, and The Enterprise Incident. Villains Of The Kelvin Timeline.

The Star Trek movies have (with rare exception) usually featured a special guest villain, and this trend has continued into the Kelvin Timeline era. The Motion Picture Theatrical Cut vs. Director's Edition.

With the fortieth anniversary of Star Trek: The Motion Picture upon us there have been whispers of a 4K upgrade of the film and beyond even that, a 4K (and for the first time, high definition) upgrade of the Director's Edition from 2001. Alternate TOS Episode Titles.

The Original Series is well known for it's flowery, cultured and sometimes dare we say pretentious episode titles, so this week on Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore thought it would be fun to do a run down of the first season's episode titles and reimagine them as if they were titled at the height the "Berman" era of Star Trek when the music was wallpaper and the titles were too.

The Nicholas Meyer Director's Cuts.

As Leonardo da Vinci once said, "Art is never finished, only abandoned." Nicholas Meyer would seem to agree, as he returned to both of the Star Trek films he directed (The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country) to create alternate director's cut. Discussions and Starfleet International Interview

From the Commodore's Personal Log: On January 11, 2016, the REFIT of Standard Orbit took to the airwaves with a new sound, a new crew and a new mission starting with Episode 111: Hailing Frequencies Open. My first and ONLY choice for First Officer was my good friend and literal Trek EXPERT Jeffrey Harlan, now lovingly known as as Mr. AtoZ. I also desperately wanted to bring in one of Trek.fm’s biggest supporters onto the show. The CHIEF Ken Tripp beamed on as Sound Engineer (editor) and we forged our very own TOS "triumvirate". I can’t thank them enough for what they have brought to the show and personally to my life as my good and dear friends.

On August 22, 2016 Mr. AtoZ and I had the pleasure to record our final episode together as hosts of Standard Orbit. Thank you everyone from the bottom of our hearts for making our journey here at Trek.fm so amazing. Over the last several shows on Standard Orbit - specifically episodes 133 and 134, the Commodore (Norman C. Lao) did not have the opportunity to participate in all of the thought provoking and exciting conversations as The Chief (Ken Tripp), Mr. AtoZ (Jeffrey Harlan) and new Standard Orbit crewmember Zach Moore delved deeply into the Kelvin Era cinematic universe. On the cusp of the epically anticipated Star Trek BEYOND, Norm really wanted to participate in his own way. So he decided to pull rank here and record his own thoughts on this new movie universe.

Admittedly he was ashamed of his attitude towards Star Trek 2009 and in this Supplemental Commodore's Log entry, he confesses how his fandom almost stalled as his love of the Original Series blinded him to the very tenant that Star Trek was built upon: IDIC...Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Challenged by that very ideal and axiom of TOS, Norm makes that very same plea to the Star Trek fandom at large and hopes that we all as the fanbase strive to understand the current state of Star Trek and move forward in a collective and positive manner.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyage through the Original Series “Kelvin Era” Movies with Star Trek INTO DARKNESS; the much anticipated sequel to Star Trek 2009. For the past few months, the Refit Crew has been discussing at length, the Original Series Era movies while navigating towards their final destination of BEYOND at temporal coordinates 07.22.16. After nearly 4 years of the critical and financial success of the 2009 Reboot, INTO DARKNESS roared back onto the big screen.

Even though it was the highest ever grossing Star Trek movie, earning over $467 million dollars worldwide, many “Trekkies” believed that this movie was the furthest from Gene Roddenberry’s original vision. The themes of this movie were of a darker tone, challenging not only veteran Trekkies, but a modern audience as well as INTO DARKNESS presented a future that was quite different from The Original Series source material. INTO DARKNESS definitely ushered in a new era of Star Trek cinematic storytelling. And then there was the "wrath" of Khan...or was it the "wrath" of the fans?

In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyage through the Original Series Cast Movies with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; heading towards July 22 and BEYOND! In the fall of 1991, as the 25th anniversary was unfolding, many fans were hopeful that they would see the Original Series cast go out with grace and dignity. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was constantly under enormous development pressure as fans anticipated a much stronger showing for what was being rumored as the “swan song” for the Original Series Cast.

With Nicholas Meyer returning as director, coupled with the scripting collaboration of friend Denny Martin Flynn, Meyer set his team to task working off of an original idea from Leonard Nimoy; the “fall of the Berlin Wall in Space.” Re-interpreting social issues through the lens of science fiction has always been at the heart of successful Star Trek storytelling and Star Trek VI continues that tradition with incredibly heartfelt performances from the cast who, at the end, literally "signed off" their final appearances in their last feature film together as the Original Series crew.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyage through the Original Series Cast Movies with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier; heading towards July 22 and BEYOND! After the enormous box office success of The Voyage Home, the studio decided to continue the cinematic universe with a fifth production: The Final Frontier. William Shatner, who had a contract that ensured he and Nimoy got equal footing, was given the reins to direct. The Final Frontier was a very challenged production and the Chief and Mr. AtoZ try to unpack the issues that plagued ST:V.

Was the plot an all too familiar and common trope in Star Trek? Did Shatner elevate the screen presence of the “Big Three” - Kirk, Spock and McCoy - at the expense of the rest of his crew and acting comrades? Did Laurence Luckinbill’s portrayal of an emotionally charged Vulcan fly in the face of what we knew of Vulcan canon from TOS Join us as we warp ahead into the finer points of The Final Frontier. We also reflect on the untimely and tragic passing of Anton Yelchin; a brilliant, young actor who will forever be loved by Star Trek fans as the Kelvin Era's Ensign Pavel Chekov.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyages through the Original Series Cast Movies with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, as they head towards July 22 and BEYOND! After the dramatic gravitas of The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock, there is a very obvious and light-hearted approach towards this movie as Leonard Nimoy wanted to take this in another direction. It wound up being the most successful of the Original Series cast movies at the time in 1986. And it was no secret that the return of Nicholas Meyer had a profoundly positive impact as well.

One of the strongest aspects to The Voyage Home was the story itself as the writing contributions of Harve Bennett and Nicolas Myer added to the overall partnership with Nimoy at the helm. Most of the cast got their "moment" in the movie and we discuss several of our favorite. We also discuss several Star Trek firsts in this film: we saw the first female Starfleet Captain, Christine Chapel in the background in charge of Starfleet Medical and, in our opinion, a story where the team is actually trying to make an impact to the timeline instead of restoring a timeline. Star Trek BEYOND is nearly upon us and your refit crew felt that a “logical” follow-up to Temporal Trailer Park 1 & 2 would be to a return to the Original Series movie franchise starting with Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Why Star Trek III? Well after the Chief's and the Commodore's conversation on Standard Orbit 123: TMP vs. TWOK: The Conversational Kobayashi Maru, the team felt that The Search for Spock would be the “logical” choice to continue covering the Original Series movie universe and to tap into all of the listeners’ nostalgia and emotional connection to those legendary stories.

The Refit Crew reminisces a great deal about how this film was Leonard Nimoy's directorial debut, how Harve Bennett wrote the entire script, discuss major themes of death and darkness in this movie starting with Valkris, through to David Marcus and culminating with the destruction of the Enterprise. Was it the right amount of drama or too much? Ultimately, this movie posited the ultimate question: Is Spock back? They have the power to inspire, to create wonder, and to fuel the imagination for the eventual theatrical release of the next installment in the Star Trek film franchise. For this show, we are going to actually step into Mr. AtoZ' Atavachron and set the temporal parameters between 1979 and 1989 as we travel back time and in memory.

As we begin to ramp up to Star Trek BEYOND, we are going to take a look at a select group of Star Trek movie trailers from the first 10 years; starting with The Motion Picture and through to Star Trek V. Let's all take a transmat beam down memory lane as we try to recall the feelings and emotions that we experienced when we first saw these trailers either in the theaters or on TV. When the Standard Orbit “Refit” Crew began our shakedown voyage aboard the Trek.fm network on January 11, 2016, one of the tenants of our podcasting team for Trek.fm was to ensure that we - Norman C. Lao, Jeffrey Harlan and Ken Tripp - upheld the level of quality and content standards that the listeners of Standard Orbit and Trek.fm have come to expect from the incredible groundwork set by former hosts Drew Stewart and Mike Schindler. Theirs were large shoes to fill and the Refit Team had a daunting task to reach a bar that had been previously set so high with 110 shows.

Nearly four months and 14 episodes later, the Refit Team just wanted to check in with all of our supporters and listeners to see if we have settled into a nice and steady cruising speed. The Chief (Ken), Mr. AtoZ (Jeffrey) and I have a great deal of fantastic content planned for the future. But, we also want to keep all of our listeners and Red Shirts engaged in the show that is crafted for you. We have loved every second that we have brought you in these first few months and there is a great road ahead to BEYOND and STLV50! When Star Trek left the television airwaves in 1969, there was a void that was left in the hearts and minds of Trekkies around the world. The Original Series "re-runs" and the 1973 Animated Series tried to fill that void with varying degrees of success. But on May 25th, 1977, everything changed with the release of George Lucas’ STAR WARS. It created a shockwave in the film industry that challenged the very nature of science fiction storytelling and the projects that were being developed at that time, especially Star Trek: Phase II - the grandiose production to bring Star Trek back to television.

Many Trekkies believe that Phase II's evolution into Star Trek: The Motion Picture was necessary to strike while the proverbial "iron" was hot, and launch the film franchise through riding the epic financial tidal wave and wake of Star Wars. Conversely, there are also many who believe that the (arguably) most popular Star Trek movie of all time is The Wrath of Khan because it was more "profitable" as a film and because it has so totally permeated global pop culture to this very day. So ... what IS the movie that truly “saved” Star Trek and is this the "conversational" Kobayashi Maru for the Chief and the Commodore?

Several episodes in The Original Series introduced a few high-ranking and "intrusive" characters that shared one commonality: the rank of Commodore. From the Ahab-esque Matt Decker in The Doomsday Machine, to Robert Wesley who was in charge of the M-5 Multitronic System proceedings in The Ultimate Computer, to Commodore Stone who moderated the legal proceedings in Court Martial and several more; the Commodores were an authoritative, bureaucratic and at times overbearing extension of Starfleet Command.

The Commodores added an additional layer of dramatic effect in The Original Series as they were usually at odds with Captain Kirk, Mr, Spock and the ongoing Five Year Mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. They were akin to the overbearing and controlling "authority figure" that Kirk, Spock and others had to struggle against and overcome; a dynamic to which many younger viewers in the late 1960's related. In the end, the Commodore rank never extended past The Original Series save a few minor references in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

As a follow-up to Standard Orbit 116: The Real Enemy Is War Itself, The "Refit" Crew wanted to take a look at the only other episode in the entirety of the 79 of The Original Series that featured the Romulans. The Enemy Below tells the story of the epic "cat and mouse" game between an American Destroyer Escort Captain and the commander of a German U-boat. This 1957 World War Two classic film directly influenced Star Trek writer Paul Schneider as he crafted the narrative for what would become one of Star Trek's greatest episodes. Balance of Terror was a ground-breaking episode for Star Trek, as it brought a "military" essence to Starfleet and allowed the audience to grasp the political tapestry of The United Federation of Planets in the 23rd Century.

Balance of Terror is a fan favorite for many reasons: the introduction of the Romulans, the humanizing of the enemy, and the application of sound naval tactics to help drive the narrative tensions. It was also famous for its bold decision to break yet another convention of the time: Women serving in combat. Almost 30 years later after this episode was produced, women were finally allowed to serve on warships. In addition, the military does not normally allow married couples on the same vessel for fear of that couple being killed outright in combat as almost seen with Robert Tomlinson and Angela Martine.

Alternate realties, alternate universes, and alternate timelines essentially share the same family tree if you will. The point where the tree trunk meets the ground is the Big Bang; the focal point for every conceivable timeline. As the tree grows, limbs sprout off in every direction, branches sprout from those limbs, twigs sprout from those branches and so on and so forth. Most of the realities that we have seen on Star Trek are universally similar; the laws of physics, historical figures and events, significant locations and most importantly, the main cast of characters.

On May 8th 2009, the eleventh Star Trek feature film boldly went where no Trek had gone before: rebooting and reimagining the franchise under the aegis of J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot Productions. The film paid homage to the previous Star Trek continuity via a time-travel plot that ultimately created a new timeline; now only loosely connected to the prime universe. Whether it is called NuTrek or the JJ-verse, the Star Trek film continuity from 2009 is its own timeline. But the question remains: At what point did the timeline diverge from the original?

On this episode of Standard Orbit, we prep for surgery and perform a deep dissection and examination of what Star Trek fans have labeled as the "worst" episode ever in the history of The Original Series, and was even parodied as a stage production in 2004 for a limited run in Irvine, California at the Irvine Improv! William Shatner, in his autobiography Up Till Now, and in his memoirs Star Trek: Memories, called this one of the series' worst episodes; a "tribute" to NBC executives who slashed the show's budget and placed it in a bad time slot.

There was a great deal of unrest happening behind the scenes at the beginning of Star Trek's third season. Gene Coon was trying to complete his writing contract and director Marc Daniels felt marginalized by executive producer Fred Freiberger. The show budget was always under pressure which in turn forced co-producer Robert Justman and Fred Freiberger to constantly redirect creative to fit production, increasing tensions between them and the NBC front offices. Did these underlying forces ultimately affect the return The Original Series on September 20th, 1968?

The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released on December 14, 2015 and was immediately and severely criticized by the Star Trek fan community at large. Focusing too much on action, such as James T. Kirk performing some thrilling heroics on a motorcycle, the overwhelming fan response raised a very interesting question: Did the combination of Justin Lin, Director of The Fast and the Furious, in concert with the explosive styling of this trailer, cause an unjust reaction from the fans based solely on some ninety seconds of footage?

On this episode of Standard Orbit, we will take and in-depth look at the speculation surrounding the trailer, delve deeper into why the fans reacted in such a volatile manner and go even further … beyond the trailer itself. Two days after the trailer's release, Simon Pegg told audiences, “There’s a lot more story, and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more of what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’ But, you know, they’ve got to bring a big audience in, they’ve got to bang the drum. So to Star Trek fans, I’d say hang in there, be patient."

Nostalgia is perhaps one of the most powerful forces that influences our lives. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary’s second definition of Nostalgia describes it as being “a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition; also: something that evokes Nostalgia.” In today’s world of recycled Hollywood content, reboots, refreshes and retellings - has the entertainment industry created a rift in Star Trek fandom, to the point where preserving the "glory days" is the only way for some fans to move forward?

Over the last 50 years, only a handful of people can be said to have run the Star Trek franchise. In the 80's, that man was Harve Bennett, who we recently lost.  In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew are joined by "Star Trek Khan Movie Expert Guy" John Tenuto to talk about what Harve brought to the franchise. Thirty-five years ago this week, Star Trek was brought back from the dead in not just a movie, but a full-fledged Motion Picture. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew discuss our first times seeing the film in its various forms, our first impressions, and how our opinion might have changed in the meantime. We rave about the music and the dialog scenes, and try to view it from The Original Generation who had to have been so excited to see their favorite crew on the big screen for the first time.

It's time again to help us pare down The Original Series into something even more manageable. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew continue our exercise going through Season Two of The Original Series and deciding what really needs to be there to create the “Standard Orbit Canon.” No episode is automatically safe, each one must stand our test of continuity, play an important role in the future of Star Trek, and eventually lead to the finale of The Original Series, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and perhaps beyond!

The Star Trek Ongoing comics started out doing straight adaptations of episodes, but even when they went completely original they couldn't help but have shades of episodes present. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew talk about the fourth set of IDW Ongoing comics "Vulcan's Vengeance.” Mike presents his theory that, because of all the changes to the timeline, this comic is actually a secret adaptation of "Balance of Terror.” Is the Vulcans' plan logical? Is this now a story of racism between Vulcans pretending to be Future Romulans and contemporary Romulans instead of a human being racist against a Vulcan for the actions of past Romulans? Almost ten years after The Original Series went off the air, Paramount was ready to bring back the show as Star Trek II (not that one… or THAT one), also known as Star Trek: Phase II. While it went back and forth between being a movie and a series, the casting, sets, and a lot of the episodes were already prepared, and some were re-purposed into The Motion Picture and The Next Generation.

Of all the characters in The Original Series, probably none was more underutilized than Uhura. It's finally time for the last part in our commentary series on everyone's favorite bad guy, Khan! In Khan-mentary 3, John Tenuto joins Mike and Drew to talk about Star Trek Into Darkness! There’s a lot of Star Trek out there that doesn’t really fit into the wider continuity. What if you could focus on only the episodes that just help tell the story of Star Trek? In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew conduct an editing exercise in which we go through Season One of The Original Series and figure out what we think really needs to be there in order to create the “Standard Orbit Canon.” No episode is automatically safe, each one must stand our test of continuity, play an important role in the future of Star Trek, and eventually lead to the finale of The Original Series, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Good science fiction is known for addressing contemporary issues in creative ways, and The Original Series was no exception. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew talk about racism and how TOS dealt with it (or didn't). We cover how the casting tried to overcome the racism of the era and how they directly tried to deal with it in the plots. We also discuss if McCoy being racist towards Spock undermined the integrity of the show's anti-racism message, and if it's okay that the entire crew acts racist towards the Klingons in Star Trek VI.
