Rabbi Akiva Tatz explains why Rosh Hashanah, though a day of judgment and yearly “recreation,” is not focused on teshuva; instead, it centers on declaring Hashem as King. Teshuva is saved for Yom Kippur, while Rosh Hashanah is about returning to the root and resetting life’s agenda—being needed to willingly accept and express God’s kingship.

The shofar is a spiritual alarm clock, calling us to wake up, reflect, and do teshuva. The yetzer hara keeps us distracted so we don’t stop and think. The challenge is keeping that Rosh Hashanah inspiration alive all year. The mezuzah can serve as a daily reminder to reconnect with Hashem, while consistent Torah learning helps turn inspiration into lasting change.

The three main sections of Rosh Hashanah Mussaf: Malchiyot — accepting Hashem as our King; Zichronot — asking Hashem to remember the merits of the Jewish people, especially the Akedah; and Shofrot — remembering the shofar of Har Sinai and looking forward to the shofar of Mashiach. He closes with a blessing for answered prayers and a Shana Tova.

Elul is a special month of teshuva and closeness to Hashem, expressed by “Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li” — “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine.”

The shiur also discusses two miracles that happened on Elul 11 and introduces the Ruzhin Hasidic dynasty. The Ruzhiner Rebbe taught that serving Hashem should combine dignity on the outside with deep humility on the inside. This connects to Rosh Hashanah, when our main focus is accepting Hashem as King.

Rabbi Ribner explains why Elul is such a special time. He reviews the story from Pesach through Yom Kippur, including receiving the Torah, the sin of the Golden Calf, Moshe’s prayers, and Hashem’s forgiveness on Yom Kippur.

Elul is a time when we are especially close to Hashem — “Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li.” Rabbi Ribner explains that teshuvah means returning to Hashem, and that when we return out of love, our past mistakes can even be transformed into merits.
