Host Umaa Thampu is a Gestalt psychotherapist working at the intersection of therapy, identity, culture and power. Each episode is one unhurried, rigorous conversation with a practitioner, writer, scholar or artist whose thinking changes how we understand the inner life — and what history, race, class, migration, queerness and power are doing inside it. This is not a therapy-advice show. There are no tips and no quick fixes. It is a thinking space: guests bring the concepts they have built, Umaa puts those concepts under pressure, 'Where does this idea fail?' and 'Who does it leave out?' Every episode ends with something you can take into your own practice, workplace or family before the next one arrives. Who it's for: therapists, counsellors, psychologists, supervisors and trainees who want language for what their training never covered. Educators, organisers, HR professionals and faith leaders who need more than a slogan. And anyone who reads seriously about power and belonging and wants a conversation that does not flatten it. What you'll hear: racial dynamics and racial trauma. Migration, caste, class, queerness, faith and belonging. What happens in the body when race or power enters the room? Complicity, harm and repair. The limits of clinical models that pretend context does not exist. And the specific, human, unexpected stories underneath all of it. How it works: we start with where a guest comes from and how they see. We put that lens inside the real systems they work in — where those systems hold people and where they fail them. Then we test the ideas rather than admire them and turn them into questions you can use. Released in seasons. New episodes and the notes, resources and reflection prompts that go with them are announced first through the Talking With Umaa newsletter.
