Whether you’re a regular or seasonal rider, you need to perform routinary check-ups of your bike. For this episode, we’ve prepared a fail-proof checklist that you can use anytime and at all times. 

T - Tires and wheels. Go over each tire and see if there are cracks. Correct the tire pressure. Align the wheel bearings.

C - Controls. The controls allow you to ‘communicate’ with your bike. Examine the handlebar, cable, throttle, pedals, brake levels, clutch, and brake hoses.

L - Lights and electrics. Charge your battery. Lights and turn signals must be functioning. Do a general visual inspection of your wiring harness to know if there are breaks in the connections.

O - Oils and fluids. Ensure correct oil levels. Your bike is equipped with side glasses where you can view the current status of oils and fluids. Make sure there are no leaks anywhere. For the gas, fill up the tank before the warning light goes off.

C - Chassis. Investigate if the suspension is secured. Clean and lubricate your bike chain. Tighten the fasteners that hold the chassis together.

S - Stands. Inspect the spring movement. Look for damages or dents. Don’t ride your bike when the stands are in position.

Before hitting the streets, you need to check first if your bike has the right oil level, as indicated in the gauge levels. Next, to have unbeatable performance, charge your battery adequately. A battery lasts for 1.5 to 2 years only, so it’s best to note the date when you last replaced yours. Lastly, ensure that your bike has the correct tire pressure before rolling out since it’s normal for tires to lose pressure after prolonged storage. 

On the flip side, if you’re going to keep your bikes for an extended period because of the pandemic, you must remember three things: First, maintain 5 to 6 liters of fuel in your tank to guarantee that the fuel pump is submerged, thereby avoiding corrosion. Second, secure your bike’s tire pressure; add 1 to 2 PSI to allow for tire pressure reduction during the lockdown. Lastly, you need to lubricate your bike’s chain right after using your bike. Timing is essential as you need enough heat on the chain to allow the absorption of the lubricant.

Can we buy bigger rear tires for our bikes?

• We don’t recommend bigger tires since this changes the geometry of the bike and its lean angle position, which poses a danger to the rider. Switching to bigger tires affects the handling of the bike, its performance, and required tire pressure. While having bigger rear tires is good to look at, it’s better to stick to what the manufacturer recommends. You can upgrade your experience by buying the right sized tire from a better brand with a better compound. 

Is it true that the KTM 390 Duke often breaks down and requires repairs more frequently than the other models?

• I have been a lucky owner of a 2nd-generation 390 Duke since 2017. In my experience, I have not done any repairs on my bike besides regular preventive maintenance. All parts are original except the battery, which I replaced since it’s been used for over two years.

Can we use WD40, Singer oil, or ordinary engine oil to lubricate our bike chain?

• No. WD40 or Water Dispersion 40 only takes out the water but does not lubricate the chain. It’s suitable for cleaning but not as a lubricant replacement. Using WD40 also allows rust to form.  
• Ordinary engine oil is also not recommended since it doesn’t have the property to stick to the chain. The consistency is typically thinner than a chain lubricant. 
• Use only a lubricant intended for bike chains, no matter the brand. The crucial part is to regularly apply them to your bike chain at least twice a month. 

After how many kilometers do we change the bike chain?

44:58 Nani

• Chain replacement is relative to use. If you’re not using chain lubricant or not properly maintaining your bike, the kilometers would be shorter. For regular use, replacement would be in about 15,000 to 20,000 kilometers. The chain links begin to harden, and you hear a noise coming from the chain when it’s time to replace it. You need to check your sprockets as well and replace both front and back.

Is a higher-octane gas recommended for the 390 Duke?

• Our recommended gas is the unleaded 95-octane. Usually, higher octane gas has higher anti-knock features. But it is better to stick with the recommended level of octane since a higher-octane level will just add up to your fuel costs without adding anything to your bike’s performance.

TBT Live! Podcast talks about riding, KTM and everything motorcycles.

With “dyed in the wool rider” Nani Juarez and Bimbo Isidro as the dynamic duo of this show, both renowned motorcycle personalities also work full-time with Adventure Cycle Philippines, Inc., the official distributor of KTM motorcycles in the country. 

Nani heads the Aftersales Department which provides technical support for KTM owners, while Bimbo, as Business Development Manager, handles all KTM Authorized Dealers nationwide. 

First aired in 2017, Thursday Bike Talk (TBT) was created as an avenue to promote KTM motorcycles and serve all riders. To this day, TBT Live! continues to share valuable information and knowledge that benefits the local and Filipino riders.

Through the podcast format, TBT Live! is made more accessible to riders, giving them the chance to download and listen to the show whenever and wherever they are. • Beware of fake news and false information spreading online. If you have issues or technical concerns with your bike, not just KTM bikes, ask people who are knowledgeable and trained in handling motorcycles. These are your KTM Authorized Dealers.

• Reading your Owner’s Manual is a huge help in preventing problems when riding your bike. Answers to most of your technical questions are found there.

• When you encounter troubles with your motorcycle, do not attempt to repair it yourself. Instead, bring your bike to the nearest KTM Authorized Dealer to avoid voiding the warranty.

• Nani and I go way back as riders. We are what you call the “dyed-in-the-wool” riders. Riding has improved the quality of life we have now and has brought us so much enjoyment, which I’m sure other riders understand.
