was asking what you folks would like me to cover. From that initial post I got

4 suggestions, 2 of which I’ve covered was then able to break off additional ideas

from these suggestions and now how 17 potential topics. All from one post.

Asking your audience is a great place to get topic ideas.

If you already have a podcast, then ask your current audience.

You could ask them via an episode, asking them to email in. Ask on your

socials, polls are always fun. You could even contact some listeners directly,

ask for a chat and ask what they’d like on the show.

Perhaps you don’t have an audience yet or haven’t released an

episode yet.

Ask elsewhere.

Find a relevant Facebook group and ask the question “If I was

to create a podcast about the world’s greatest doorstops, what would you like

me to talk about? What guests would you like on?”

If no one answers, ask in another group or different social

platform.

You don’t have to cover every suggestion thrown your way,

but you may get some ideas that you’d never have thought of. You may also get

some reassurance around an idea that you are mulling over.

Also, keep in mind that you’re likely to be a fan of the

thing your podcasting about. If you’re not a fan of doorstops, don’t do a

podcast on the world’s greatest doorstops! But because you’re a fan, you’ll

have ideas about what you would like to hear.

Use those ideas.

Sam O’hare asked a question, back on my original post, about

the optimal length of podcasts and the worry of ‘rambling on’.

And it’s a great question.

Unfortunately, because it’s a question of length, I’m likely

to go into Emma Mellor mode, so please bear with me.

There is absolutely no point in having a really big one if

you don’t make any real impact with it. You can go as big and deep as you want,

but if you don’t give the listener what they actually need, then it leaves

everyone unsatisfied.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t go big and bold. Just that the

end needs to justify the means.

Is it a topic that’s worthy of a deep dive? Do you and/or

your guest have the knowledge, ability and stamina to sustain hour long

sessions? Or would you bet better off with a quick one?

5 minute episodes are extremely popular, but can you get the

job done in that amount of time?

These are all things you need to consider when doing your podcast.

It genuinely isn’t the size, it’s what you do with it.

So experimentation is key here. If you don’t have a podcast

yet, play around and record a few episodes, see what suits you best. If you

already have a show, throw out a bonus episode or two with different lengths.

See what hits with your audience.

And as for waffling?

One persons waffle is another persons crumpet.

There are some podcasts that I can listen to for hours

(literally four hours!) it’s you, it’s your voice. It won’t be for everyone and

you can always listen back or ask someone else to listen and give you feedback.

The number of downloads on your latest episode is irrelevant.

As podcasters and content creators, it’s really easily to

get hung up on an individual number, especially if we start comparing to a bigger

podcaster with a bigger platform. But we need to look at the big picture.

 Whether it’s episode one

or episode 74, the actual numbers alone for that episode are not important. They

only mean something when you compare them to your other numbers.

If I released a new podcast today, I could probably take a

rough guess at how many downloads it would get based on the size of my

audience, but it would be a guess, there’s no way of making an accurate

prediction. And it wouldn’t matter. The important thing you would get is a

starting point.

So, let’s say episode one gets 10 downloads. What matters

now is growth. So, for episode 2 we should be aiming to get 10+.

The individual number doesn’t matter, but we can track the

increase/decreases in lots of areas, here’s a few:

• Episode v episode
• First day downloads
• First week downloads
• 28 day downloads
• % of people listening to the full episode

It’s the increase and decrease that we need to pay attention

to, more than an individual number. As always, I’ll go into more detail on this

in the accompanying podcast – link in the comments – as well as sharing some of

my own stats and how I measure them.

There are however some ‘magic’ numbers – 100, 500, 1000,

5000, 10000 etc. These are magic because, firstly, they make you feel good!

Secondly it’s a great thing to talk about on social media and use them to

promote the show.

But I’ll talk more about how to promote and grow your show

Firstly, names in titles.

Think carefully about where you put the names of your guests.

Do you actually need them in the episode title? How many people would see the name ‘Terry Cook’ and think that it’s a must listen episode? How many would be turned off because they have no idea who this person is? If I was interviewed for a driving instructor podcast, it might well be worth having my name on the title as I’m known in that field. But on a podcast about making cheesecake, not so much.

Should you opt to have the guest name in the title, put it at the end.

Start your episode title by telling people what the show is actually about. That’s what will draw most people in.  ‘The worlds greatest cheesecake, with Terry Cook.’

And take your own name out of any episode titles.

If you want your name front and centre, put it in the title of the podcast. If you have fans, they’ll find you anyway, they don’t need to read that you’re talking to X or Y.

Use the title to tell people what the episode is about.

Telling people what the show is about will help people decide whether to listen or not when they’re glancing through episodes.

Stating what the show is about will also help with SEO, podcast apps are essentially search engines. By putting keywords into titles, you will give your episode more chance to come up in searches for that topic.

If you search for driving instructor on apple podcasts, the first result that comes up in ‘The Instructor Podcast.’ Mainly because I continually keep using the words driving instructor.

Never be afraid to specify what your show actually is and don’t lead people in with false promises.
