Thank you for accompanying me on this year's journey. I made an effort this year to be more deliberate and less ambitious, not constantly trying and failing to include weekend services and then getting burned out and missing days. Through your support and prayers, this year I actually managed to do all the weekday services this whole Lent without any gaps. I look forward to the coming commemorations and celebrations of Holy Week and Pascha, and the whole new year afterwards. God willing, I'll be with you all again next year. Due to time constraints I am unable to record these canons. The 6th Monday always corresponds to the saint of the day on Bright Friday. This year, April 25th, the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark which, just like the Feast of the Great Martyr George is not normally omitted but instead combined with the Bright Week services. Therefore at this compline either the supplicatory canon of the Theotokos from the Oktoikh for the day and tone of this week or another canon may be sung in its place.

While in the Greek recensions (Greek, Melkite, Romanian, etc), it has become the custom to do Small Compline with a section of the Akathist Hymn on the first four Fridays of the Fast, the older practice still maintained by the Slavic Churches (Ukrainian, Ruthenian, Belarusian, Russian, etc) is to continue with Great Compline on Friday evening as it is a fasting day, albeit in a more abridged manner with less singing. We normally take the Canon of the Departed in the tone of the week for the odes of the day (6,7,8&9) and of the saint of the day for Saturday for the remaining odes, since the saint's commemoration is omitted at Orthros. However, as stated before, due to time restraints I am unable to add the Compline Canons this year.

In a normal setting this Vespers is affixed to the Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom as the Eucharistic celebration of the Great Feast, but in this format we assume a lack of this ability and have recreated an ending of Vespers according to what logically makes sense.

Vigil of the Annunciation Part 2: 4th Tuesday Festal Orthros & 1st Hour

The Order of Festal Matins & Lauds in their role as the second part of the All-Night Vigil of the Great Feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. While in some places it has become the rule to always move Matins to the morning, which on the face of it makes perfect logical sense, for festal vigils this is usually done immediately appended to the evening service, normally Great Vespers but on this Fasting Feast Great Compline. Similarly there is no Divine Liturgy permitted on this day other than that which is attached to Great Vespers in the evening of the Feast itself, however this is in many places ignored as a matter of rote liturgical abuse.

The Order of Great Compline in its role as the first part of the All-Night Vigil of the Great Feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. While in certain Greek-leaning jurisdictions, although only proper to the Greek Orthodox Church itself due to the popularity of the secular celebration of Greek Independence, a modification was made to the liturgical schedule to make this day as if outside of the Great Fast, in all Churches other than the Greek Orthodox, and certainly and especially the Slavic Churches with no modern Greek influence the traditional order should be maintained: namely that the Vigil for this Feast does not consist of Great Vespers and Matins but, akin to the Fasting Feasts of Christmas and Theophany Eves, it is Great Compline & Matins. Similarly there is no Divine Liturgy permitted on this day other than that which is attached to Great Vespers in the evening of the Feast itself, however this is in many places ignored as a matter of rote liturgical abuse.

Normally the 4th Monday's Great Compline would always contain the canon of the saint of the day on the Feast of Feasts, Pascha, this year April 20th: Our Venerable Father Theodore Trichinas, but this year due to the Annunciation the commemoration is omitted.

While in the Greek recensions (Greek, Melkite, Romanian, etc), it has become the custom to do Small Compline with a section of the Akathist Hymn on the first four Fridays of the Fast, the older practice still maintained by the Slavic Churches is to continue with Great Compline on the evenings of Fasting days, albeit in a more abridged manner with less singing. On Fridays we take the Canon of the Departed in the tone of the week. However, as stated before, due to time restraints I am unable to add the Compline Canons this year.

We have reached the end of the Lenten Journey, through the grace of God. This brings an end to our daily uploads. Thank you for those of you who have been along for the ride and given your support, both in prayers and other ways.

I am turning my attention now to the Revised Julian Feed which has just finished Clean Week and is in full swing towards our shared goal of Pascha.

I hope to be uploading a few Festal services throughout the year but resuming daily uploads at next year's Great Fast. Next Year the dates of Pascha on the Gregorian and Julian Calendar coincide greatly reducing my preparatory workload and, God-willing, allowing me to include Holy Week, Paschal, and more regular daily services after this next year of preparation.

I am making an announcement today to put my tail between my legs and say “I’m sorry”.

The fact is that I’ve bitten off way more than I can chew with this project and I think I will need to scale it back significantly.

With the way my work and home schedules collide I have about 2 hours of free time, on average, per day with which to dedicate to making these recordings. I keep hoping I’ll reach a point where that is enough time but it simply isn’t happening.

So I think that I will continue building up a library of the various propers and parts and do a significant relaunch to the idea of a daily full office podcast at a later point this year.

I will continue doing some uploads, one that easily comes to mind is the Midnight Office each day which is relatively unchanging and easy to prepare - most of the variations for throughout the year are already done. I will also be paying attention to upcoming feasts and things that do not significantly change year-to-year which will serve a dual function of being something I can share already while also adding to the repository of things for coming years.

I also want to stress that I will be spending time working on something for during Holy Week and Pascha in particular, as these are incredibly important services which are absolutely unmissable in theme, but sadly unavailable to so many.

I do sincerely apologize to any of you who have grown fond of this space and beg your forgiveness for “leading you on” with the hope of a constant companion throughout Lent and beyond. God being good, I hope to not completely abandon this project by any means and to have it grow back to the full offering I once promised.

As you may have noticed there was no Matins published this morning. The lack of consistent sleep as I try to get all these out each day has begun to affect me and I do not think I will be able to keep the pace up. In addition, the time consuming nature of this project has resulted in my losing out on a few of my other music production jobs and income sources.

Therefore I am going to be scaling down for the rest of Lent. To begin with, I am going to see how much less time it takes to continue with all the services but stop recording harmonies. The second and third pass through each of the propers, and mixing it together so that it sounds at least decent, is what has taken up the lion's share of the work. Therefore I will be only producing single voice melodies for the propers from now on, obviously anything previously recorded and in the ordinaries will remain as is.

If that doesn't cut the time down sufficiently to at least allow me to sleep regularly, then I will begin to look at lowering the amount of services. Likely Matins will be the one to go first as it is by far the longest and most intricate, and in order to prioritize the Midday and Evening offices which contain the scripture readings that guide us through the Fast.

The Order of the 9th Hour for 24 Feb followed by Great Vespers for the 2nd Sunday of the Great Fast, a Sunday of Tone 6, commemorating St Gregory Palamas and the "Triumph of Spiritual Orthodoxy". Some Greek Catholics have rejected this commemoration due to his later status and some anti-papal sentiments in his writing, but this is erroneous since the 2nd Sunday follows the 1st Sunday. The Triumph of Inner Orthodoxy of Hesychasm and Byzantine Spirituality follows the Triumph of External Orthodoxy of Liturgy and Iconography (i.e. Byzantine Artistic Expression). St Gregory's personal views of church politics reflected his time and would likely be very different if he were around today, but his contribution to our Spiritual and Philosophical Tradition is timeless and the same today and everyday.

As such, that Canon makes no sense so far removed from the Feast for which it is meant to prepare us. Therefore, we take as normal the Canon of Supplication to the Theotokos for the day and tone of the week (Tuesday Tone 5) from the Oktoekhos.
