One white school and one black school collaborated in a controversial play production in 1966 and now will revive the play 50 years later with a new generation of high school students in the same schools and communities. Wisconsin's voting districts are drawn so that they're "safe" for either Republicans or Democrats. The problem with this is that it means voters who don't vote Democratic have less of a say in their government, and it also makes Republican districts geographically larger than Democratic ones. This has led to many problems over the years.

Gerrymandering is the drawing of electoral districts in order to support one political party over another. It's a way for politicians to get more power and control, but it can also leave people without representation or fair voting rights.

The Supreme Court ruled that gerrymandering was unconstitutional, but there are still loop holes were politicians can get away with it. This technique has been used to influence elections, and has been employed by both Democrats and Republicans.

REDMAP stands for “REDistricting Majority Project” which is a program of the Republican State Leadership Committee dedicated to winning state legislative seats that has had a critical impact on congressional redistricting. Jason Boyd is the author of “The Reasons Why Relationships Suck but Dating is Worse” and strongly believes women are naturally meant to be the leaders in a relationship and if they knew this and act accordingly, relationships could greatly improve for many.

He believes this theory is based on the fact that men naturally pursue women and women naturally instruct men and challenge them to be better. In this episode of The 411 Live, Jenny shares the devastating truths of sex trafficking hidden in middle and high schools of the rural communities. She also shares tips for parents and mentors to create the right conversations that could prevent sex trafficking. “Parents aren’t aware that their kids aren’t aware.”

It has affected people of color all over the world, and while many recognized it, they did not have the term to name it. Join Beverly Taylor as she discusses examples of racial gaslighting and how to address them, especially in the workplace.

Dr. Freiburger spends this episode revealing research she uncovered about the considerations of the judges who render the sentences and the unconscious rules at work in the judicial system. “In order for us to change [the rules] and do something about them, we first have to identify them and know they exist.” Find out exactly what knowledge the average population is missing about the rules on punishment in our judicial system.

He and Beverly Taylor attack some of the myths and stigma attached to the men of Milwaukee and the world today. Along with offering support for Milwaukee families through Made Men Worldwide Inc, Dennis reveals specific skills and offers invaluable advice for fathers of all economical backgrounds to succeed not only for their families but for themselves as well.

Obtaining the spotlight for their accusations, the men received a lot of positive and negative feedback as well as an opportunity to seek change within the school walls. Carl Greer tells us, “You can get in front of the situation and really start to make change within organizations because change is coming whether you like it or not. Be a leader and stand up and start to make a difference.”

Kelly reveals the challenges for both teachers and students in the constantly shifting system between virtual, hybrid and in-person schooling, “We lost some of the kids through the cracks.” Chantell shares the other side of the system where parents are being asked to step up for their kids and become teachers themselves, “I chose my experience. But a lot of parents were forced into the situation.” She also points out a couple different opportunities that are available to parents who may not know their options.

The need for foster parents continue to rise while more children are coming into foster care. The issue of lack of foster homes goes much deeper than just a lack of interest. Beverly Taylor chats with Teresa Cocker and Karen Schlindwein about the foster care system in SE Wisconsin. Karen Schlindwein says, “The system in and of itself is something that people just tend to hear so many poor and negative things, and it’s not the perfect system. There is no perfect system.”

Astonishingly, eight thousand children are currently in the state’s foster care system with 100 children entering it each month in Milwaukee County! The number of reported cases have gone down during the pandemic, but Cocker and Schlindwein say that’s because mandatory reporters, such as school teachers are not seeing the children on a regular basis because of no or limited in-person schooling due to the pandemic. They expect the numbers to greatly increase once schools are open and evidence of neglect and abuse is seen.

While recruitment efforts have evolved to fit the times, correcting an overwhelmed system will take much more than a digital influence and a new pitch. Teresa says, “Foster parents are like all of us. They can be single, they can be married, they can be partnered. They can rent, they can own. It’s really about having the space in your home and in your heart.”

Join us as we talk about the shortage in foster care, some of the myths and misperceptions and how you can become a foster parent. You will get a good picture of what it takes to become a foster parent and the resources available to walk them through the process. As a matter of fact, you may be just what a foster child needs.

With October being Domestic Violence Awareness month, Nancy Stone provides insight on how to detect a violence that is “hidden in plain sight” with details on how it begins, where it goes south, and when it gets dangerous. Beverly Taylor zeroes in on a commonly asked question: why doesn’t the victim leave the abuser?

Stone invites listeners to ponder that, “an abuser is not abusive 100% of the time.” Stone puts the truth in our face with statistics on the prevalence of domestic violence around us and the effect it has on families and economies. She also provides insight about the different forms of abuse and the best methods of helping someone through them. “In a rational relationship, problems have solutions, but in an abusive relationship, solutions become problems.” After listening to this episode, you will realize a family member, friend or coworker may be suffering from domestic violence right under your nose.

Moira Kelly is an arbitrator, mediator and negotiator as well as an expert on alternative dispute resolutions, who founded Kelly Consulting LLC located in New Berlin. Kelly Consulting LLC focuses on consulting and training in dispute resolution, labor relations and organizational effectiveness. Moira Kelly is also the author of How To Cost a Labor Contract and co-authored sections on grievance mediations and workplace conflict in Alternative Dispute Resolution by Jay E. Grenig.

One moment in the interview, Moira Kelly states, “Why can’t we just get to world peace? Well, because some people don’t want the fighting to stop.” Some people are ready to come to an agreement, and some people need a few more arguments in. They bring to light what works and what doesn’t for people who have a one track mind on what they want. Kelly also reveals that there are different types of listeners. She introduces a spectrum of methods to understand one another from different internal places. Moira Kelly highlights, “We like to hear things the way we like to hear things. There are four different ways of preferring how you listen, and these are listening styles,” and as Beverly Taylor learns these styles with her listeners, she is quick to pick up that, “knowing them can help you, otherwise people can walk away with hurt feelings.”

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black American man, was killed in Minneapolis, MN during an arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit bill. Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on Floyd’s neck for almost eight minutes While Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down, begging for his life and repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe”. This incident triggered National protests against police racism, police brutality as well as the lack of police accountability.
