Meanwhile, in St. Louis, Masyn Winn’s single in the bottom of the 11th gave the Cardinals a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Mets. After the game, it was reported that Winn was in a car accident, but he appears to have avoided major injury. His condition will be monitored in the coming days and weeks.

Over in Baltimore, the O’s Sam Basallo made history yesterday. His bottom of the 9th ABS challenge is the first to result in a game-ending decision. Basallo went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. The O’s beat the Rangers 8-3. Elsewhere, the Braves’ Drake Baldwin has been raking. Last year’s NL Rookie of the Year went 2-for-5 with four RBIs last night. Baldwin would have had even more, but A’s center fielder Denzel Clarke robbed him at the fence. The Braves are now 4-2 on the season, the A’s 1-5.

Turning to Miami, Sandy Alcantara threw a 93-pitch complete game shutout against the White Sox. Despite the strong performance, only 6,505 paid to attend. Alcantara, 30, acknowledged the sparse crowd, saying the fans don’t come—but the team loves them anyway. The Marlins are now 5-1.

Josh Bell hit his first home run of the season for the Twins, while Jo Adell notched his second RBI of the year for the Angels. Despite their efforts, both the Twins and Angels fell. Meanwhile, the Yankees secured another win, bringing both the Yankees and Brewers to 5-1 records.

In a 3-2 loss to the Phillies, seven of the Nationals’ eight total hits came from American-born Black players (Lile, Nuñez, Wood, and Abrams). That stat has me wondering: What team has had the most hits by American-born Black players in the past few years? That’s worth looking up. Cam Smith, Drake Baldwin, Victor Scott II, and Stanton all made the highlights. Not highlighted: Justin Crawford got a hit and scored a run. Rate my hat, it is a good one. See you tomorrow.

Building on this announcement, seeing the uniforms in action produced unexpected emotion and tremendous pride. The Mariners’ media team did an excellent job telling the story of the Steelheads and included members from the community in their inaugural presentation. The uniforms look amazing, and this proactive action by the Mariners, who do not have a storied history in Negro League folklore, should afford the opportunity for teams like the Royals (Kansas City Monarchs), Cubs and White Sox (Chicago American Giants), Nationals (Homestead/Washington Grays), Phillies (Hilldale), Pirates (Grays & Crawford’s), Orioles (Elite Giants and Black Sox), and many more MLB teams to honor their past in an exciting way. And, let’s be honest, new uniforms bring in new revenue for the club too. It’s a great business move.

Turning to game action, the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Yankees, and Brewers are still undefeated. That may not come as a surprise to most; those teams all were in the playoffs last year, with stacked rosters. But, there is another team that is undefeated that is a surprise: Shout out to the Marlins. The Miami Marlins are 3-0 after sweeping the Rockies. Yes, I know the Rockies are trash, but live it up, MIA.

Looking more closely at the 2-1 teams, the Nationals were impressive, taking two wins in Chicago against the Cubs. The Rangers took two wins in Philly, and Andrew McCutchen hit extremely well. The Reds taking two off the Red Sox was unexpected. Most pundits have labeled the Red Sox the team to watch. I know it’s early, but the MLB season is off to a hot start.

The most emotional walk-off victory belonged to the Braves and Dominic Smith. Smith is the first player in MLB history to hit a grand slam walk-off homer in his team debut. Smith, 31, lost his mother to cancer less than two weeks ago. He did not take time away from camp because he was battling for a roster spot. Smith said after the game that he felt his mother’s presence with him last night. It was a beautiful moment for Smith, who is in the midst of a very difficult time.

The Reds’ Dane Myers got his first hit with his new club on Saturday, and, yes, it was a walk-off. The story of the Reds-Red Sox game will not be Myers; it will be umpire CB Bucknor. The veteran umpire (Bucknor, 63) was overruled by the ABS challenge system six times. I don’t know what the consequences will be for Bucknor, but this is not good.

In Chicago, the Cubs beat the Nats, but James Wood hit his first home run, and Nasim Nunez made one of the best web gems of the season already. Nunez was filling in for CJ Abrams, who has stepped away from the team due to bereavement. It is reported that he has suffered a death in his family.

Taj Bradley (Twins) K’d 9 in 4.1 innings pitched. He didn’t get a decision, but the Twins beat the O’s 4-1.

Aaron Judge has hit his second home run in as many days. Captain America is back after his Opening Day 0-5, 4K performance. The Yankees are 3-0, which means the Giants are 0-3. They did score their first run on Saturday, so there is that.

A heartfelt “Peace God” to Jason Heyward. The 16-year pro has officially called it quits. Heyward leaves the game with 5 Gold Gloves, a World Series Championship, and an All-Star appearance.

As of this morning, twelve MLB regular-season games have been played, and we’ve learned a few things. The Dodgers are on pace to go 162-0 (again). The quest for a three-peat is on. And Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts says the 2026 team is his best roster. It’s hard to think Mookie Betts is on a revenge tour, but the 2025 Gold Glove finalist is hoping to bounce back from a down year. He is fully recovered from a stomach virus that really hampered the start of his 2025 season. He went 1-4 last night in a game shown on NBC, called by the legend Bob Costas.

The Nats surprised the Cubs, beating them 10-4. The story of the game will center on CJ Abrams. The 2024 All-Star crushed a bases-loaded sure double, but got thrown out as he thought the ball was a sure home run, and it was not. He got thrown out at second, and that is really a microcosm of Abrams right now. Let’s hope ‘26 brings more on-field maturity, because I think he is going to have a breakthrough year.

Victor Scott II stole two bases in the Cards come-from-behind victory against the Rays. Mike Trout hit his fifth Opening Day homer to lead the Angels over the Astros. Tarik Skubal struck out six Padres in six innings for the Tigers 8-2 win.

The Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Brewers, Red Sox, Guardians, and even the O’s also picked up impressive Opening Day wins.

And Tommy Pham signed a minor league contract with the Mets.

Cheats and Lewis were in Miami for Pool D and saw the powerhouse Dominican team go undefeated in four games.

Malik and April were in Houston for Pool B action. Powerhouse Team USA advanced, but it was closer than most would have thought. Team Italy proved to be the surprise of Pool B and the tournament so far.

Felina was in Puerto Rico for Pool A. She saw Team PR win the pool and Team Canada advance to the quarterfinals.

Unfortunately, we did not have a friend out in Tokoyo for Pool C, but Japan and Korea have advanced to the Quarterfinals.

The entire crew made predictions from the Quarterfinals through the end of the tournament. They also discussed the highs and lows of the WBC, and some insight into what can be done in future years.

Scott is from inner-city Philadelphia and played on the Taney Little League team that went to the Little League World Series, featuring Mo'ne Davis (Scott was the catcher). He then went on to play at Princeton, where, despite spending three years on campus, he only played one full season before being drafted by the Giants in the 7th round of the 2023 MLB Draft.

Scott's superpower is his character and leadership qualities. He learned those at an early age from his parents (Steve and Robin) and carries them with him everywhere he goes. He is a natural leader and wears the title well. Being a leader and team uniter is something he takes great pride in. And it may be those leadership attributes - along with his on-field performance - that take him to the Major Leagues.

I saw their presentation earlier this year at the American Baseball Coaches Association Conference in Washington, DC. They presented to the Diversity Committee, chaired by Mizzou Baseball Coach Kerrick Jackson, and it was truly compelling. Kyle and Kamal have worked with numerous college teams to create an environment that begins with dialogue and culminates in greater unity.

Tuda, 25, recently made his debut in AA. The Texas native, HBCU (Texas Southern) alum, was drafted in the 19th round. He led A-ball in 2023 with 65 stolen bases. He is making an immediate impact this season with the Senators.

Gwynn, 42, a former professional baseball player for the Brewers, Padres, Dodgers, and Phillies, is now a commentator for the Padres and an afternoon sports talk host on the Padres' flagship radio station.

Coach Franklin and the players speak for the first time about their experience with the start-up Pioneer League team, created after the significant announcement that the A's were leaving Oakland after the 2024 season.

The Ballers have a narrative of community-first. They have created interactive fan engagement and expensive marketing to highlight their innovation. The Ballers' opening-day roster was filled with players of color and a Black Manager in Franklin. However, as the season progressed, Franklin was dismissed despite a 29-25 record, and several Black players left the team for various reasons. Both Davis and Halsema asked to be either released or traded despite both batting over 300.

There were housing concerns, safety concerns, and physical health concerns. There was a growing narrative that the Ballers' environment was challenging to minority players and their approach to the game.

This podcast allows you to hear Coach Franklin's perspective and the perspective of the players who experienced the season.

Sherm works with every level within the organization. While he is gaining experience daily, I was in Norfolk to see him work with the hard-hitting Tides. I marveled at his ability to relate to the young prospects while commanding their attention during instruction. He has earned respect among the vets, who are very close to his age. Andrews, 30, a Flordia native, is a true advocate for Black women in sports, specifically focusing on supporting and mentoring young Black softball players.

In recent years, she has set her sights on media, hosting a show on the MLB Network, creating content for BET MGM, and serving as an analyst for SEC Network. If that was not enough, A.J. also made a trip to Dubai for Baseball United last year and is an active member of the Players Alliance.

The Rays looked and felt pathetic (we have to call it like it was), and their attendance was the worst in an MLB playoff game since 1919. The Rangers, while not a juggernaut, took care of business. The Twins broke their 18-game playoff losing streak in Game One and then took care of the Jays in Game 2 to end the series. It was not my prediction, but it was entertaining.

So, the Twins and the Rangers advance to take on the Astros and the O's — respectfully.

We talk about potential playoff breakout stars like Corbin Carroll and Adley Rutcshman.

The Roberto Clemente Award is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. Past winners include Willie Mays, Willie Stargel, Rod Crew, Don Baylor, Curtis Granderson, and Derek Jeter.

And in 2023, five of the nominees are African American. That's five African-American players out of thirty nominations. That's 16.6%. The players are Tony Kemp (A's), Marcus Stroman (Cubs), Jojo Gray (Nats), Aaron Judge (NYY), and Hunter Greene (Reds). What a tremendous honor. If you add the nine LatinX players that are nominated, that makes nearly half the league. I truly love how this game is growing, and I am happy to share this information.

Salute to every player nominated regardless of race. It's a stellar accomplishment.

YDF is a joint initiative by Major League Baseball and the Players Association to support efforts that focus on improving the caliber, effectiveness and availability of amateur baseball and softball programs across the United States and internationally. From local-based programs to the Hank Aaron Invitational and HBCU Swingman Classic, the foundation helps make youth baseball and softball more accessible – creating economic opportunities, strengthening communities, and building character – on and off the field.

I spoke to Jean about her role at YDF, and how they strategically change communities through access to baseball. It's a fascinating conversation. Everyone interested in revitalizing a community through baseball or even just offering baseball access to kids that don't have local stability should tune in from start to finish.

Tyler shared a lot in this interview. He talked about his approach to the game, changing positions, and even going to Austraila for winter ball. The Birmingham native went to college at UAB and was drafted by the Royals in the 13th round in 2019.

I enjoyed hearing him talk about his experiences as a young player. He wasn't surrounded by a lot of players that looked like him. But he talks about the amazing support system around him and, ultimately, finding peace and brotherhood within his peer group.

With that, we can start to get an estimate as to where Black American players stand in the game. The unofficial count is approximately 43 Black American players on opening day rosters. That is only 3.6%. That number represents a drop. There are slightly more Black players in the NL (24) than AL (19). Most Black positions players are starters. Eight teams have 0 Black American players on their active opening-day roster. There are two teams with four Black American players, that is the most (Pirates & Nationals). Again, this is an unofficial count of just opening-day rosters. These numbers will change as players come off the IL and minor-leaguers get called to MLB. As you can see, there is a lot to be excited about, but more work is needed to ensure Black American players are represented in MLB.

Steve made it to MLB as an entrepreneur through his company Steelo. Sports. When a Steelo glove broke into the majors, Steelo became the first Black-owned glove company ever worn in MLB. (Steelo was also the first Black-owned glove worn in the Olympics.)

In just a few years, MBP is disrupting the standard, predominantly white ecosystem of youth, travel, and college baseball to bring exposure to some of the best minority players in the country.

MBP's mission statement reads as follows: Minority Baseball Prospects' mission is to promote the game of baseball worldwide by hosting the highest quality events for minority baseball prospects while providing meaningful opportunities and information to minority players, families, MLB organizations, college coaches, and fans. Of course, that sounds amazing. But who runs this operation? Where did this fantastic (and much-needed) vision come from?

The answer is Atlanta-based coach Alex Wyche. And he is our guest on the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast.

Coach Wyche is the founder and CEO of MBP. After a successful high school and college playing career, he moved right into coaching in the Atlanta area. Before starting MBP, Wyche led the historic power Redan High School for six years. Wyche has coached countless collegiate signees and several pro players. There is no better person to run an organization designed to teach and expose Black baseball players worldwide.

Kyle is a fantastic young man on and off the field. On this Mixtape episode, we talked about his unique journey to professional baseball, his great support system, and his goals of giving back to the game during and after his playing days.

Like many pro players, Kyle enjoys pro baseball's diversity and international flair. He loves learning about his teammates and being able to play baseball for a living. Justyn-Henry had an excellent 2022 in the Braves organization. He went from High A to AAA in one season. This offseason, he was traded to the Tigers and listed as the #7 prospect in the Tigers organization.

He is heading to his first major league Spring Training in a few weeks!

You will find Justyn-Henry to be a cool, confident, well-rounded young man. He is hungry and humble, and earnest about being the best baseball player he can be. I am confident once you hear this podcast, you will be a JHen fan, like me.

Before joining the O's staff, Marrow played his college ball at North Carolina Central University. He did a coaching stint with USA Baseball, George Washington University and ultimately was accepted into the first-ever MLB Diversity Fellowship. A job that placed him away from the field and in the front office for the San Franciso Giants. Marrow returned to the field last year after some time away from the game.

On this episode of the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast, Cheats visits with Coach Marrow, and they discuss his storybook journey, his role as fundamentals coach, how he views the game, and what it's like to be a Black man placed in all of these unique, exciting, and sometimes isolating roles.

D'Andre is now adjusting to pro ball. He has a consistent routine that he vigorously pursues every day. But now, instead of working out around his college teammates and peers his age, he is working out beside fellow pro players, some at the highest level of the game.

I know that sounds awesome, but what does that really mean? It means he is one of the few people working at MLB HQ dedicated to ushering in a new generation of Black American players. Through his role at the MLB Development office, he assists programs like the DREAM Series, the Hank Aaron Invitational, and the recently announced Swingman Classic. These programs (and several more) provide elite Black amateurs a taste of pro baseball.

Del, a former pro player, moved to the executive side in 2004. He grinned as an intern for the Cubs, worked for the Arizona Fall League, and ultimately landed in the front office of the Chicago White Sox for six years. He then moved to MLB HQ in 2016.

Del understands what it takes to succeed on the field and in the front office. His path is not for the faint of heart, but it emphasizes what is possible if you identify a goal and remain committed to achieving success. You don't want to miss this podcast.

Even with his on-field success, Bubba still has much to prove. It was not always easy at the University of Maryland. He used his competitiveness, self-confidence, and support system to endure some tough times at College Park. He keeps those principles today as he works to move up the ranks of pro baseball.

Coach Smith made history in 2021 when she was hired as a coach by the Boston Red Sox organization. The hire made her the first Black woman ever to serve as a professional baseball coach.

While Coach Smith may have burst on many people's radars with her historic hire, she has a journey made for Hollywood. She played softball and club baseball at Dartmouth. She earned two post-graduate degrees (one in law), interned in MLB front offices, and served as a volunteer coach at the college level. She applied for job after job after job, rarely hearing back from D1 programs and pro clubs. She worked seven paying jobs simultaneously, along with a volunteer coaching position. She earned her stripes to make history.

Our free-flowing conversation is fun and authentic. We touch on Coach Smith's coaching style and philosophy, analytics versus the eye test, and how players respond to her instruction. We also discuss how life has changed for her since her hire. It's a fantastic talk. Coach Smith is genuine, passionate, extremely knowledgeable, and even a bit funny; in her own way.

I'm so glad you found us. This year will be filled with dynamic podcast guests and fun Black baseball banter. Last year, I created a Dream List of guests for 2023, and I hope to deliver as many as possible throughout the year.

My first guest in 2023 is Bruce Maxwell, starting catcher for the Cañeros de Los Mochis. Bruce is in his 11th season of pro ball. He has played all over the world (the US, Mexico, Germany, etc.). In 2017, while playing for the Oakland A's, Bruce was the first (and only) MLB player to take a knee during the national anthem for social justice. Maxwell's actions came in response to President Donald Trump's comments that professional football franchise owners should fire players who knelt during the anthem. He remained the only MLB player to protest by kneeling until 2020, when the league allowed for "Black Lives Matter" patches and organized league-wide kneeling for social justice in the aftermath of the nationwide protests of the murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.

In this first part of our two-part interview, Cheats (Black Baseball Mixtape) talked to Bruce about making a professional home in Mexico and how he has adjusted personally and professionally since 2017. Maxwell has been open and authentic about his journey, the good and bad. His friends and support system has changed since 2017, but he has found joy in the game, and peace within himself.

Bruce Maxwell was right. He took a stand when others did not. He has suffered penalties that most of us don't fully understand. I am honored to have him as my first guest of the Black Baseball Mixtape Podcast in 2023.

On this episode of Mixtape Talk, Cheats is joined by Tyrone Brooks of the MLB Diversity Pipeline Program. Tyrone's principle job is to help diversify the game at the front office level. Tyrone has amassed a stellar executive career with the Braves, Guardians, and Pirates.

In 2016, he was hired in his current role with MLB and, since then, has helped hundreds of women and people of color enter careers in baseball.

For many years, Tyrone has been passionate about helping people enter the game. He started the Baseball Industry Network, which and now grown to very 40K members (on LinkedIn).

In our conversation, we talk about the challenges of his job. The perception versus reality of diversity in baseball and that MLB is doing to make people aware of career opportunities within the game.

Tyrone has a love of baseball that started when he was five years old, and his passion continues today. His job is challenging and demanding. The travel is immense. Yet, he loves the opportunity it creates for the next generation. He is a true leader and trailblazer.

We have a special episode for you: a first in BBM history. Samad Taylor is the #25 prospect in the Royals system. He was recently named on the Royals' 40-man roster, making him the first-ever MLB player to do a Mixtape Talk. (That's right, we're on the rise).

I could not have a better first MLB player than Samad. This man has been through so much, from being drafted at 17 to maturing as a man and a player, to sitting out a COVID year, and now being named to the 40-man. His early journey is remarkable.

On this episode, Samad talks about the challenges of being drafted so young and how he's navigated pro baseball. He talks about being a Black player in a sport where there are not a lot of Black players at the pro level. And he talks about what can be done to get young Black kids excited about the game. Mike mixes hip-hop culture with baseball in a contemporary but forward-looking way. People like Mike in the game will help make baseball more accessible for future generations of Black baseball players.

The book explores the players and events that shaped Black baseball from the nineteenth century through the twenty-first century, presenting a look at Black baseball that you’ve never seen before. The book dedicates five of its twelve chapters to seminal figures Negro Leagues history: Rube Foster, Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, and Jackie Robinson. Jay and four other SABR authors wrote those chapters. Some other chapters highlight other important aspects of Black baseball, like the Latin Winter Leagues, the dead ball era, and the years after Jackie’s integration.

The book is fascinating as Howard digs deep into topics like the great migration of Black from the American South to the west coast. He talks about the explosion of money in baseball during the late 70s and 80s; and the treatment of Black players, such as Rickey, by white owners, such as George Steinbrenner. Howard writes about it all. And by doing so, he paints a picture of one of the most dynamic, misunderstood, and legendary players the game has ever seen: Rickey Henderson.

Coach Jackson is one of the most respected coaches in the fraternity of Black skippers. He has coached at every collegiate level and spent time away from coaching, serving as an MLB scout, baseball agent (with the Boras Corporation), and the President of the MLB Draft League.

In 2017, he led Southern University from 9 wins (2018) to the SWAC Championship and a birth in the NCAA tournament in 2019. In June 2022, at the time of his hire, Jackson became the 3rd Black coach selected to lead a PWI DI program and the first Black coach ever to lead the Memphis Tigers. As he says in the conversation, his selection was not only the right hire based on merit but also a statement appointment for the University and the community of Memphis. This conversation is insightful and fun.
