How can business owners use AI in copywriting, branding, and content creation and still maintain their voice and originality?

AI is shaking things up in podcasting and content creation in ways that both fascinate and freak me out. I know many of you, small business owners and creative service providers, feel the same. That’s why I brought Erin Ollila, a strategist, copywriter, and the host of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, on the show to talk about using AI effectively, where it fits in the copywriting process, and just as importantly, where it doesn’t.

Erin walks us through how she uses AI in an iterative process to help with brand guidelines, what to do when AI “just doesn’t sound like you,” and where the real value lies for copywriters, strategists, and business owners in the era of AI.

This episode reminded me why I started podcasting. It was an opportunity to spend time with two of my most favorite people in the world while sharing them with you. It’s a win for everyone!

Amy Woodall and Lindsay Boccardo join me for this episode. They are both returning guests, but it has been more than a minute since we last chatted.

You know those people that always make you feel better when you’ve spent time in their presence? That is how I always feel after spending time with these two! We are constantly told by the online business “experts” that we need to niche down. Amy and Lindsay are taking a more expansive approach to their podcasts and their work, and it is working for them. Welcome to the latest incarnation of The Brassy Broadcast. The podcast that has taken long periods of rest and has served a variety of purposes since it launched in 2014. I'm Jen Edds, The Head Broad in Charge at The Brassy Broadcasting Company and this is my podcast.

There are a few definitions of brassy when you look them up online. Most definitions paint “brassy” in a negative light of being harsh, loud, tasteless, showy, or resembling brass in color. And then….when you scroll down….you see brassy described as brazen, bold, audacious, unashamed, unrestrained by convention and propriety.

I want to live a brassy life - A life lived boldly, brazenly, audaciously, and unrestrained by convention and propriety.

In my world, Brassiness thrives in the intersection of curiosity, creativity, and caring no more what most folks think.

I'll be sharing what I'm learning along my own adventures to live a bold and brassy life. Here’s your disclaimer: I’m no subject matter expert. Far from it. I’m just a curious broad full of questions.

Public speaking can be a crippling fear. I wonder how many of us it keeps from really reaching our full potential. I've had to get a handle on my own fears around speaking and performing in public. I'm still a bundle of nerves before I hit the stage and it doesn't matter if it's a speaking gig or I'm playing music.

Joining Toastmasters helped me significantly. It gave me confidence because it forced me to practice. My guest today, Dr. Charmaine Gregory, started a podcast.

169: It's Not a Priority if It's Not a Practice

It’s not a priority if it’s not a practice.

The one thing that has become crystal clear to me in 2020 is that if I don’t have a practice around something that I say I want to accomplish, then it really isn’t a priority. It’s a just “that would be nice.”

One of the core pillars supporting that bridge to Legendary status is RESPONSIBILITY.

As the HBIC (Head Broad in Charge), I have to take responsibility for failure to meet the goals I have scribbled down in scattered notebooks and spreadsheets.

If these goals were really priorities for me, I would have built a practice around how I would reach them.

This isn’t new information. As a kid, when I wanted to make more free throws, I spent time practicing shooting free throws. I had a ritual that I followed every time I stepped to the line. I still do it. BackSpin the ball. 3 bounces. Line it up. Shoot. Follow Through.

You already know what practice looks like. Now it’s time to take action to achieve the priorities that really matter to you.

My process for creating practices around priorities:

1. Determine if the WHY matters enough that I will show up and put in the necessary work.

2. Outline your practice and keep it consistent.

3. Block Time on your calendar

I started a morning routine after reading Hal Elrod’s book The Miracle Morning a few years ago.

I always felt better when I did it, but I was inconsistent in the practice.

I got serious about committing to practicing my morning routine back in March. It was the ONE THING I could do that felt like I had some control over what was happening in a world filled with uncertainty.

The Practices in My Morning Routine

1. Work out hard for 20 minutes

2. Journal

3. Meditate

4. Work on my business and not “in” my business.

Each practice has a very clear WHY attached to it.

My morning routine practice is sacred. Nothing else happens in my morning until my morning routine is completed.

I’ve accomplished more in my business, during a global pandemic, because I have committed to this morning routine practice.

Brené Brown’s Unlocking Us podcast episode about FFTs is now required listening for my podcasting clients because she shares her challenges around starting a new podcast and how she has worked through them.

This is my first time back in a while. My focus for the past year has been on my other podcast, Beauty and the Gi, a podcast about the intersection of life and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on and off the mat.

It feels good to be back. Now, does this mean that I'm going to be back on a regular production schedule? Probably not.

I'm using The Brassy Broadcast as a resource where I can direct clients and folks with questions about podcasting. It's more about adding to the resource library as needed, rather than feeling like I have to put out a new show every week.

This episode is actually serving a couple of different purposes for me. The first is that I wanted to record and edit a full episode using Descript. It's a cool tool for business owners, authors, and industry experts that want to start a podcast. It's a great tool to get you started.

The second purpose of this episode is to share with you why I’m making listening to the FFT episode of Brené Brown’s Unlocking Us podcast required listening for my new podcasting clients.

Jennifer does a little myth-busting here. I was under the impression that there was an ideal length for show notes. Turns out, this is not the case.

People are going to Google to get questions answered. Google is looking for you to completely cover the subject from beginning to end and do it better than anyone else.

How does Google determine who has the best answer? It’s all of those hundreds of little tweaks.

Formulating the Right Questions for SEO

Think about how your listeners are phrasing questions when they are going to Google to look for answers. What words are they using? What questions are they asking?

Get out of your own language box and how you say things. Ask your audience how they would search for an answer.

Optimize your show notes and blog posts because there are still folks that would rather read than listen to podcasts.

Think about having your episode transcribed. This makes it easy to create detailed show notes.

Jennifer has created a search optimization checklist to help optimize blog posts.

Don’t just describe what is in the episode.

If your intention is to share information with your audience, give them the option of how they want to consume it. Listening to a podcast is not an option for everyone.

Use the episode description, blog post, or show notes to give detailed information that actually answers questions.

Write a title that is for the user

Why Do We Struggle with Investing in Ourselves?

I feel like I’ve been bleeding money this summer

I’m at that place in my business where I know that if I’m going to grow, and create the life and the business I envision, I’ve got to start investing in myself.

Let me be real honest here for a sec, it scares the sh*t outta me. I haven’t made this kind of investment in equipment and self development since I left my corporate day job behind to start my own business.

The hardest investment trigger to pull was the investment in myself. Why is that so hard? I don’t think I’m the only one that struggles with this. Can I get an Amen? You can tweet it to me @brassybroadjen.

What Happened When I Invested in Myself

Joining the E-League was definitely the best investment I made this year. This was investing in myself because I want to take my podcasting to the next level.

The E-League was started by Elsie Escobar.

The E-league included an intense one on one Come to Jesus or in this case Come to Elsie coaching session.

I identified some areas I specifically wanted help with in improving, and the she expanded upon those. It wasn’t generic stuff. It was a a deep dive with specifics on what I could improve. That alone was worth the price of admission.

A Community of #WorldClassPodcasters

But wait….there’s more……

The bonus gift in all of this was the community that has developed with the other women that also joined the E-League.

I now have a community of World Class Podcaster friends scattered around the world!

These women are my go to when I want to try out some crazy new idea, get feedback, or maybe just vent a little about my latest podcasting frustration.

These are women that are creating and doing the work every day. They are my people.

My willingness to invest in myself led me to this community. If you’re thinking about investing in some kind of self development, do it. Give yourself every opportunity to get yourself to the next level.

Invest in yourself. You’re worth it.

In my ears this week has been the latest installment of Hardcore History from Dan Carlin. It’s a commitment. This episode is coming in at about 6 hours. Dan Carlin has the ability to suck me into historical events that I didn’t even know existed, and that I was interested in learning about. This dude has a gift for sharing history and keeping me tuned in.

I’m so excited to introduce you to Shawnee Kilgore in this episode! She is an Austin, TX based singer-songwriter living a crowd-funding fairy tale.

In 2014, Shawnee launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund her fourth solo album, A Long and Precious Road. In her video message to potential backers, a tribute to Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues, she held up a card that said "I'm learning to ask for help." This vulnerable and honest phrase struck a chord for one particular music fan perusing Kickstarter projects on his rare off time Joss Whedon. Whedon, one of Hollywood's most prominent directors (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, The Avengers) loved Shawnee's music and her voice, and backed the project, taking the first step towards what would become the unlikeliest of creative partnerships.

78: Producers Cut of Mom Knows

This is a companion episode to go along with episode 77. It’s the producers cut. I recorded this story using an Audio Technica ATR2100, plugged into my iPhone 6s. There is a USB camera adapter you can use to make it work. I recorded it while sitting in my walk-in closet, the tiniest walk-in closet known to man.

I stripped it down was because I wanted to make a point that you didn’t need $300 microphones and a fancy recording studio to make your art or share your voice.

Constraints breed creativity, and help us make better art. Use the tools that are currently available to you.

Stop using “lack of tools” as an excuse. I was listening to an episode of the Chase Jarvis podcast with Mark Ecko where they talk about this.

Use whatever hand me down phone, gear, laptop, or cassette tape recorder you can get your hands on. Stop making excuses and start recording!

Another constraint that I placed on myself was that I only used music that was available in the Apple Loops that come with Logic Pro X.

The Story Starting Point

I started with “Mom knows” because that seemed like the best place to set the hook in the listeners ears. I wanted to share a very specific moment in time.

I wanted to drop my audience right in the middle of the problem at the beginning. I didn’t feel the need to give a backstory because I knew there were opportunities to sprinkle bits of it in as the story progressed.

77: Mom Knows - What Happened When I Was Outed to My Parents

This episode is one of experimentation. Lately I’ve become more interested in narrative style podcasting. The creative soul in me wants more than just an interview show. My vision is to create a hybrid that weaves interviews, stories, and sound design together.

It all starts with the story. Today I’m sharing one of mine. This episode is the story only. There is a companion episode that will follow this one. It’s my podcasting nerd version of the director’s cut. I’ll break down the production and share how creative decisions were made. It will also serve as a record for me to consult when I listen back in a year and wonder “why in the heck did I do that there?”. This is a benchmark episode.

I’ve chosen to share this story now as we head into PRIDE month. It’s a time of celebration and reflection in the LGBT community. We’ve come a long way thanks to the tireless work of those within the community and our allies. There is still much work to be done, but it’s nice to take a minute to celebrate, and who doesn’t love a fabulous parade.

Unfortunately, I know people that still can’t openly celebrate because they are closeted, but it goes much deeper than not attending a parade. They can’t be the fullest most glorious versions of themselves because they have to hide the greatest gift we are given as humans, love. They can’t openly share their LOVE. If you haven’t lived it, it’s hard to imagine.

I’ve also come to realize over the years that being out isn’t just about me. It also directly impacts my family and how they navigate their relationship with friends and family.

Here’s my short story. I hope that it helps you in some way, or at least shines a little light.

60: AG - Lessons for Music Production and Life

I chat with music producer AG about her approach to music production, as well as overcoming some of the issues we face as women in any industry.

AG is a triple threat She has been producing, songwriting and engineering music since the age of 15. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, AG relocated to Los Angeles and began to make her mark as one of the few female producers in the industry. Her unique blend of diverse musical influences include M83, Peter Gabriel and PJ Harvey, has led to extensive network TV exposure, popular television commercials, and feature films.

Most recently, AG produced Ciara’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” for Lionsgate’s new vampire killer movie The Last Witch Hunter. Rolling Stone Magazine describes the song as, “a syrupy, mesmerizing slow-burner.”

AG’s music has been featured in countless TV shows and feature films including Pretty Little Liars, The Leftovers, Grey’s Anatomy, and Gossip Girl.

My biggest takeaways from this conversation were not so much about making music as they were about some of the universal challenges that we face as women.

58: Music Producer Catharine Wood Talks Mixing, Mastering, and Production

Jen chats with Catharine Wood, owner and producer at Planetwood Productions about working with corporate clients as well as singer-songwriters, what the pre-production phase of recording looks like for her, how she prefers to receive the tracks she is going to mix or master, and tips for prepping to go into the studio.

In 2000, she began producing, singing, mixing and writing on projects and, after graduating #1 in her class from Full Sail's Los Angeles Recording School in 2005, added mastering to her professional offering.

From 2005-2007 Wood engineered at Play Studios in Santa Monica (national and international commercial campaigns -- including the first iPhone commercial, the Geico "Caveman" campaign, all of the original Apple iPod "Silhouette" commercials, the Priceline "Negotiator" William Shatner campaign, Netflix, and hundreds of other highly visible campaigns -- which included engineering on Voice Over for Keifer Sutherland, William H. Macy, legends like Dick Van Dyke and many more). In Spring of '07 Wood made the full-time shift to freelance engineering, music composition, production and post production.

In 2012 Catharine was invited to join the Los Angeles Recording School's Recording Arts Program Advisory Committee. The select committee determines the curriculum of the school and its degree programs. Additionally, Wood was invited by The Recording Academy into the Producers & Engineers Wing as a GRAMMY® Voting Member. She is a Voting Member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the former Hollywood Manager and Director of Southern California for the West Coast Songwriters organization and a proud, professional member of The Society of Composers & Lyricists. In 2016, Catharine Wood was elected to the Board of Directors for the California Copyright Conference.

As a songwriter, Wood is the recipient of Nine (9) Honorable Mentions from the BILLBOARD WORLD SONG CONTEST and currently endorses Audio-Technica, A-Designs pro audio and SJC Custom Drums. Wood's custom composition projects include a commissioned theme song for ESPN's "Viernes de Combates" airing on ESPN Deportes. Her original compositions can be heard on NBC, CBS, BBC, CTV and many more. Wood's specialties include: artist producing, music mastering, mixing, vocal recording, drums recording, audio post production, music composition & production for film+tv.

This week I’m chatting with Charlotte Martin. Charlotte is celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the release of her record Stromata.

Over the course of her career, Charlotte Martin has recorded both major label and independent releases, performed sold-out shows to audiences around the world and shared stages with the likes of Liz Phair, Pete Yorn, Damien Rice, Jason Mraz, and many others. Her music has been licensed for a plethora of television shows, including “So You Think You Can Dance,” which regularly features her song “The Dance” during the show’s open. Details magazine called her “a seductive performer” and “a skilled lyricist who writes with surgical precision” and Performing Songwriter praised Martin as “a born storyteller and affecting vocalist.”

In addition to taking a deep dive into discussing some of the tracks on the record, this conversation is full of lessons and insight about navigating a career in music business. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns after you sign a record deal.

Julie is a fellow Hoosier that is now mixing sound on Broadway. We chat about her experience as a woman working in live sound production, how your attutude is not only key to getting you through the day, but also additional work, and how she stays present while mixing a show.

Julie has been the production engineer for Jersey Boys Broadway since it's inception in 2004. As production engineer under Sound Designer Steve Canyon Kennedy, she helped open Jersey Boys productions in Chicago, Las Vegas, and London, as well as well as two national tours. She served as mixer opening the Broadway revivals of Guys & Dolls in 2008, and Jesus Christ Superstar in 2011.

She toured over five years with various music theater productions including the first national tours of Hairspray and Elton John & Tim Rice's Aida. She is a member of IATSE and has an AS in Audio Technology from Indiana University's School of Music.

Janet Billig Rich is an artist manager, music supervisor, producer, and Tony Award nominated Broadway theater producer. Born in New York, in the 1990s she worked at Caroline Records and Gold Mountain Entertainment, where she managed or publicized bands such as Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, White Zombie, Nirvana, The Breeders, The Lemonheads, Lisa Loeb, Walt Mink, and Dinosaur Jr.

She became the youngest senior executive at Atlantic Records in the mid-1990s, where she developed artists such as Sugar Ray, Matchbox 20, and Jewel. She currently operates the Los Angeles entertainment company Manage This!

Lisa's Bio:

"Concentrate and ask again," if you peek at my social media, those few words describe me. While it does not scream about my inner details, I consider it an open invitation for those wanting to ask questions.

Music shapes us, whether it is your true desire or your worst fear, and I am no different. From a young age, I was jumping on my bed (sorry, Mom!) singing along to Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Billy Joel. As I matured, so did my understanding that music, in some form, could be a career. I launched an online newsletter, wrote for a teen-based web site, and networked with managers, agents, artists, and record labels before I even understood where it could lead.

Over time, my relationships and interest in artist development and online marketing propelled me into the heart of the entertainment industry. Somehow, 15 years later, I am fortunate enough to work for some of my favorite bands and make a living. When I am not tour managing, you can find me running social media and eCommerce campaigns, copyediting books and blogs, and snuggling my tuxedo cat.
