Janeen Gacek is a serial entrepreneur ever since she was young and has started many businesses. Jeneen is the founder of Remindful Life, where she offers a step-by-step guide to awareness and clarity. She believes children can teach us more than we often teach them.
In today's episode of The Building Heroes Podcast, Jeneen shares ways to step outside chaos and develop self-awareness and trust. We also chat about homeschooling and designing our own life by learning what works best for us.
Topics Discussed In This Episode:
[00:49] Jeneen's background
[03:45] The self-design program and how it improved their lives
[13:15] Unlearning with kids
[17:31] What do we want for our children?
[25:50] The benefits of learning together with kids
[30:50] Other changes experienced from the self-design program
[35:25] The school system
[37:36] Trusting ourselves
While running their business with her husband and another business partner in Bali, Jeneen says everything wasn't doing great, and they weren't sure how to move forward. At this point, she felt like something had to change. They decided to close down the business, sell their house and figure out what to do next. They also decided to look for different schooling options that were more flexible for their kids.
Jeneen and her husband find a program in Canada, the Self Design Program, which "offered a lot of freedom, autonomy, and a great way to self-design."
"It was everything I had ever thought education should look like."
They enrolled the kids in the program, marking the beginning of a new family journey.
Self Designing Process
As part of the unlearning and unprograming process, the facilitator started by scheduling the day for the kids to allow them to know that life can look different and what works for someone might not work for another person.
Jeneen and her kids later went through the unlearning process as they experienced new things. She says not knowing what the next step would be created mutual respect between them and helped create conversations and discussions.
While societal expectation has created a template of how life should look like, Jeneen insists on the importance of knowing what we want for our kids and then thinking about how to offer it.
"When you decide what you want for your kids, you can learn along with them."
She says there's joy in learning with the kids, and it allows them to teach back. This way, they develop interest and know much better.
The program also made her feel alive and engaged, something she says set a good example for the kids.
It also made her realize that everyone in the family and their values are different. This allowed them to work with the dynamics of each person.
With the initial instinct towards significant life changes being fear, Jeneen says homeschooled children have an advantage and are much more welcoming to change than kids who have been through the school system. She says the school system provides no flexibility and provides just a pattern that should be followed.
However, with homeschooling, kids are taught about trusting themselves as it helps them realize what they value. This creates confidence "because our journey is our own, and no one can tell us how to navigate. They can only advise."
As much as we can offer our kids the things we have learned in our lives, they also need to experience life in their way. Although parents don't want to mess up or see their children struggle, they should let their children trust and listen to...</itunes:summary><itunes:author>Molly Christensen</itunes:author>

Episode 25: How I Got Out of the "No Time for MOM" Cycle
<itunes:title>Episode 25: How I Got Out of the "No Time for MOM" Cycle</itunes:title>

As a homeschool mom, it seems like there is never enough time to get it all done, let alone find time for mom! She specializes in running a company and a family with a CEO's attitude, and she is now on a quest to assist other mom entrepreneurs in doing the same. Today, Jen shares her experiences about her and how she got into homeschooling and entrepreneurship.
How it all started
[1:15]
Jen started as a reluctant homeschooler and did not plan about it; it was not until her kids' teachers suggested it since one of her kids has a learning disability, she also found out that she is pregnant with their fourth child. With that, they decided to try out homeschooling which they only planned for a year but fell in love with it and decided to go on.
Getting into entrepreneurship
[3:21]
His husband initially has an automotive business with his uncle, but they decided to sell it and start an ATV business where they homeschool children under eight.
[4:11]
Jen did not have that identity of an entrepreneur nor a mom, so they ended up selling the business after seven years.
[4:55]
Jen and her husband had some struggles, and she needs to find a way to make her own money. The next day she started her virtual assistant business after picking herself up, became niche with Facebook ads, and made six figures in her first year, then she founded Home-school CEO.
Figuring out who you are
[11:27]
She started looking through Groupon and asked herself what things she will never do but wanted to try. Jen then took up pole fitness. With that, she began to understand that she could be more than just a mom, more than just a business owner, that she could have her likes, passion, and hobbies that are not related to her family and still be a good and loving mom.
Giving yourself permission
[13:40]
Jen stated that not every mom has to start a business to find what their outside hobbies are. Just permit yourself to do those things so you can outgrow them. It is maturing out to go on the path of self-discovering and figuring out what you are and what you like.
Catapult to the business
[17:54]

Boredom
[0:50]
Our definition of boredom is life is tedious, dull, and not engaging. However, Molly explains that boring could have a different meaning to kids. It could describe a whole range of feelings, or they have had much passive entertainment. It could also mean that they are uncomfortable with their thoughts or feelings, having a hard time focusing, or do not have various activities in life.
Overcoming boredom
[2:55]
To overcome boredom, most people do passive activities to take the feeling of boredom away. However, Molly insists that this method is not effective as this is only a temporary measure unless the source of the emotion is identified.
[3:25]
When kids are bored, this may become a source of unknown energy, and they must direct it elsewhere.
[3:46]
A podcast called "The Way of the Warrior Kid" tackles the questions that kids had turned in. One question that Molly liked was what a kid should do when they are feeling bored. The host's answered that boredom means that you are too much in your comfort zone, and you need to find another activity to pour your energy into.
[6:31]
Molly explains just like it is good to have emotions; it is not harmful to be bored. However, we must recognize what emotion is. It is much better if parents could teach their children the concept that boredom is a signal and that it is time to choose where they should direct their energy.
Parents' responsibility
[8:45]
Molly believes that it is not the parents' responsibility to keep their children entertained. However, parents must instill that happiness that does not come from outside sources, and their children must be the ones who shall generate their joy.
[13:32]
From the story that Molly read, she learned the ways of how to get rid of boredom. First, one must change their environment. Second, get out into nature as nature is surprisingly healing, and nature knows what to do with our energy. Lastly, choose a goal or a journey to go on to. Little things you could do today may help keep you progressing on that path.
Go to https://www.buildingheroesacademy.com/ to teach your kids leadership and success principles now and do what it takes to raise exceptional children as we change the world together.
