David Patterson began his journey in pad education at Lake Country Manufacturing, where he immersed himself in the study of various foam, microfiber, and wool pads. His expertise contributed to the development of some of the most popular pads in detailing today.

David eventually founded Oberk Car Care, known for producing top-tier liquids and pads, and also co-founded the Gloss University training team with Matt Arendt and Eron Knox.

In this new podcast education series I sit down with Brian Guy to discuss all things leather. In the detailing industry so much attention is focused on making paint shiny and a majority of detailers neglect proper interior training. In this episode Brian gives a brief education on leather care and maintenance.

Brian Guy exited the fulltime detailing world after a health scare and started working a sales rep for a big brand. In his spare time Brian picked up the art of leather crafting. After a few years learning everything he could about leather, Brian once again found himself working for a leather care company. For the past couple of years Brian has travelled the world working with detailers and manufactures educating them on proper leather care and repair.

Brett Partridge in High Def

Cam Scorey suggested that I talk to Brett Partridge since he's another Aussie detailer. Meeting Brett for the first time he told me of starting detailing as a side Hussle. His 9-5 was working in the mines in Australia and when word came around of layoffs, Brett decided to make the jump to detailing full time. 4yrs later and he hasn't looked back staying booked out Brett eventually hired a worker to help him keep up. Brett is in a small town but is lucky enough to have clients coming from as far as 3hrs away to have them work on their cars and trucks. He loves classic muscle cars and does a fair amount of them.

Matthew Goode is workin' class, white trash

Matthew Goode started working on cars at an early age in his dad's body shop. He helped his dad with different tasks from sanding to painting and even detailing. Eventually Matthew's wife told him to make the jump and start his own detail shop, so with no money Matthew made a difficult decision. Overcoming a sever leg injury that to this day bothers him and is so bad he'll one day have to remove it; Matthew has grown his detail business. Matthew has gotten to the point where he can pretty much just work on correction and coatings with some ppf jobs. His wife handles the scheduling and the details for the business and together they make a great team.

Grant Menard is someone I've been surprised we've never met. We know a lot of the same people and have been to a the same events, but never have crossed paths. I was excited to finally have him on the show and to get to finally meet him. Grant started detailing in his garage as a part time gig during school. After graduating Penn St. he went into the Pharma industry and there he learned the importance of networking. At a seminar in San Francisco he realized it really wasn't what he wanted anymore. He missed the passion he had from detailing as a business. Grant started what we know today as Menard Premium Detailing and used what he learned in Pharma sales to grow his detailing business. Eventually taking on a training side to help others grow their businesses and even joining the Urable team.

Jonathan Michael Monson may seem like he's come out of nowhere, but the truth is he worked hard to grow his business. After a nagging back injury Jonathan had to start scaling his business adding help to get jobs done. With adding help meant he needed more jobs to cover an employee. So, he dove back into his old marketing habits from when he was a GM for a tire chain. Placing the right ads on social media, Jonathan saw new way to market his business. Making "How to" videos and showing what exactly they did in the shop his social media has grown exponentially, and has even added some extra income to the bottom line. Jonathan is a giving person at heart and what he does with that money is give back to the community. For the last few years Jonathan has raised large sums of donations for the local food banks in his town. He even goes so far as to dress up like Santa Claus to help at the food banks. Not only do I surround myself with other detailers but I also seek advice from other business professionals. WOYM: The myths of ceramic coatings

I've a few ideas for episode topics revolving around ceramic coatings for a while now, so I decided to lump them into one episode. Mike Cardenas co-founder of Aquatek Coatings and Rain Albertson lead trainer with Angelwax helps us through the weird musings of ceramic coatings. I've always been curious about the coating cults and how some detailers will just blindly follow and do whatever a coating company will say. Some detailers will just regurgitate any and all info feed to them without actually knowing the info. Carfax. Why is a coating being listed on Carfax an important thing to some detailers. A few brands have made their coatings available to Carfax and act like that makes it some how a better coating. Shiny new object syndrome. A lot of detailers treat ceramic coating like a shiny new object and the minute a one bursts on the scene, it's out with the old and in with the new. Even if the old coating was fine they seem to not want to be left out on the new "IT" thing. Technology. With technology making coatings easier to use why are some manufacturers still making it difficult with multiple layering, quick flash times and hard to level off? I don't know if we'll answer any of these but hopefully just talking about them will have people thinking.

Jeff Davis: Inside the mind of a hustler.

Jeff Davis was our guest this week and boy did he have story to tell. Jeff told us about growing up poor and bouncing around from hotel to hotel and family member to family member's houses. Eventually his father moved the family to North Carolina, but that's where Jeff found trouble in the form of the streets. At 17 he got involved with the drug trade and while it might not have been the right move, that's where Jeff's entrepreneur mind blossomed. Jeff realized they needed to be more organized and quickly moved up the ranks to a leader. At 20 he made the decision to leave that life and try to become a better person. Jeff moved to Wisconsin and started a career in the music business with a record store. He regularly promoted clubs and rap battles, until one night his old lifestyle caught up to him. See one of his friends gunned down in front of him made him rethink his life choices. He moved back to Virginia Beach with his sister and became saved and started working with foster kids and at risk youth. This is where his entrepreneur mind put him the detailing industry and the rest is history as they say.

Adam Garvin aka the Trigger man

He took a break for a bit after some burnout and got into the CDB market when it became legal in his state. Tyler Wilson doesn't know the meaning of "NO"

Tyler Wilson met another detailer in a Facebook group and moved from Georgia to Naples, Fl to partner up. Quickly Tyler realized the other detailer was not as advertised and he was stranded in a new city to start over. Tyler met a potential client by simply holding a door open for him. The client gave Tyler the chance to detail his car which led to another one and another one and more after that. Tyler used that client to leverage other potential clients by simple refusing to take "No" for an answer. Now Tyler is the King of Naples detailing and has more exotic and super car clients than he knows what to do with.

Living close to Rupes in Colorado Kyle took every advantage to attend training classes at the Rupes Training Facility. After a little over a year Kyle left Rupes to pay more attention to his own business and work on growing that.

Took the audio from when I went to Sky's the Limit Car Care in Sanford, Fl a couple weeks back to make this episode. I was there to see my buddy Chris Racana from Dr. Beasley's because he was doing a demo for their NSP's. We got to hear how Jim came up with these NSP's and why they're different than other primer polishes. Chris also explains their AIO primer polish and how just by adding their SiO2 sealant you can get up to 12mos protection. Towards the end I added some audio from the detailers that were on hand to play with the NSP's and their reactions to removing scratches up to 1500 grit.

Free Hugs w/ Porsha Rose

Porsha Rose started working on cars with her family learning how to "chop" them up and painting them. She went from foster care to being Married with Children, then getting real sick. She eventually beat her illness and found her way helping a friend doing paint work for dealerships, fixing rock chips and scratches. After a bit she decided to go out on her own and start to also add in detail services like paint correction and ceramic coatings. Mike Turner the mobile detailer who isn't mobile

Mike Turner like some started his detailing career in a body shop. Mike worked in his dad's body shop as a finisher, he would denib, hand sand and polish the cars as they came out of paint. Mike went on to start his own detailing business starting out as a mobile detailer and then quickly moving to his home studio, but still caring for some clients mobile-y. Mike has become a mentor for a group of young detailers all of which are under 18 and he looks to do trainings in the future.

Jason Rose said guys I have a lot of info on it so sit back and be prepared to be scared or amazed. Jason Rose talks about how A.I. Robotics are already in use in several facilities for car manufacturing and repair shops. He tells how the A.I. can actually learn the contours and curves of each car model. When the A.I. encounters that model again it already knows how to paint correct it.

Pete Muller wants to Tint the World!

I sat down with Pete Muller from Tint World Orlando to talk about how he incorporated detailing into a stereo and tint business. Pete started very early in the stereo installation and competition world, quickly moving into sales and brand building. He was given the chance to buy a franchise for the Orlando market and never looked back. Pete started with stereo installation and window tinting, but quickly realized their was room to add other income streams such as ppf and detailing. Growing Tint World, Pete purchased the rights to other locations in the Orlando area and now has 3 stores with 2 more in the works. Afterschool special w/ Parker Lee

Parker Lee just turned 16 and he's killing it as an up and coming detailer. Parker started detailing his friends and family cars and then started to grow his business by word of mouth. After putting in a full day at school Parker comes home and starts working on his detail jobs until 11-12 at night. He has to split time every other weekend at his dad's house, so those weekends he can't detail. Parker has a garage he works out of with an overhang for extra room. I met Parker when he inquired about using Aquatek Coatings and since then he has become a believer in the brand. When Parker graduates he plans on growing his business to include a mobile unit and hopefully to move into his own shop.

Adam loves to Polish

Adam Pitale started detailing bikes then on to cars and then onto distributing the chemicals he was using at the flea market. After getting kicked out of college Adam spent some time in Australia doing what he did best, detailing. After building a successful Detail business there he sold it and moved back to the States, where he started selling product on the weekends at the Flea market. Adam started getting people asking how they could detail their vehicles, so he started by having them pull around to his booth where he could do a demonstration. Then he started making handwritten "how-tos" to give out with the products he was selling. Adam came up with the idea to try and buy the little chemical company he was buying product from but they didn't want to sell. Adam ended up finding another company that would help him make products he wasn't already getting to complete a line. These were the first Adam's polishes products. After a chance order from a major company and an eventual selling of his company, Adam was able to acquire a blender and start making all the products we know today as Adam's Polishes.

He uses his time in the Mafia to help his fellow detailers, but also to improve his business mindset. Why is there so much hate towards certain brands?

The detail industry is very much like high school whether you want to admit it or not. One of the biggest similarities is within the different brands and if those brands are "cool" or not. Just like when you were in high school you were either the "cool" kid for wearing the right clothing or you were made fun of if you didn't. Same in detailing, if you're not using the "cool" brands then other detailers seem to talk shit about you and your work. Yes, some products maybe work faster or have a longer lasting time, but does that mean they are better? An old friend of mine once told me in high school that "Variety is the spice of life" and having different products from different brands ain't a bad thing.

Renny Doyle gets Triggered w/Evan Elliott at AFO and the Museum of Flight

Live from the AFO project we were joined by Renny Doyle and Evan Elliott. Renny has been in charge of the AFO project since the very beginning in 2003. Evan Elliott is in charge or Aircraft restoration and maintenance at the museum, so the two of them have been working on this project for many, many years. Adam Garvin bet Jason and I we couldn't "Super Troopers" Renny and mention the word "Triggered" 20 times during the podcast. With Evan's help we flew past that number in the first 3 mins. Renny and Evan then went on to explain how the project started and how important it is to our history to have these aircraft still around. They both talk about WW2 Veteran Capt. Dick Helms who piloted a B17 bomber similar to the one in the museum and his 30+ missions over Germany during the war. To this day he comes to the museum every Saturday and talks to the patrons about the aircraft.

Air Force One Project

Being invited to the Air Force One project was a huge honor and we were excited to see it all. The museum is a cool place to be with so much history in aviation. The Southern Detailers Conference day 2 saw us getting our shit together and fixing the audio issues from day 1. I saw Phil Miranda from Miranda Detailing YouTube channel and asked him to take a seat. We talked to Phil about how he plans out his YouTube videos and does he prefer just filming videos or doing product reviews. Next up in the hot seat was Justin Labato who told us about how hungry he is in everything he does. He told us a little about his background and how it helped him navigate the detail industry. Then I told him to beat it and we had to talk to other people. Detailer of the Year winner Jerry Grant popped in next to make up for the terrible audio from day 1. We talked to Jerry about winning the award and what it meant to him. We also talked All Star cheerleading. Last up was probably the most influential conversation of the day, Jacquelin Evans who talked to us about carrying on her husband Chris Evans' passion with the detailers dictionary and his foundation.

Austin Featherston, Winter is Coming

I met Austin Featherston at the Creator Summit in Chicago when he came up and asked how he could get on the podcast? We chatted for a few mins and was great to meet a listener at an event like that. Austin started young like most detailers these days doing friends and family cars as he learned and grew his business. Moving from Arkansas to Illinois to be closer to his girlfriend, Austin started taking care of her father's car collection. Washing cars in the driveway wasn't going to cut it when winter came, so Austin found a shop he could work out of. After attending some training events at Chicago Auto Pros he was ready to improve his business. Austin hopes in the future he can help other detailers grow by showing him what worked for him.

Mike or Dr. Turtle as he's called had a great conversation about the chemistry that goes into different products. Kory Asher takes the biggest gamble

Kory Asher started cleaning cars at a young age in his driveway for extra cash. During high school he started working in Auto Body shops and learned how to do painting, wet sanding and polishing. After a 4-year stint in the Navy, Kory went back into the Auto Body field before finally leaving to start his own detail business. After taking a huge gamble by using his mortgage money to learn ceramic coating, Kory's business quickly grew and thankfully that gamble paid off. Kory has now grown his business to include multiple employees and a manager that is helping him spend some quality time with his family.

Yasir Waqaar from Red Clay Detailing

I met Yasir at Autogeek's Detailfest back in 2015 and we've remained in contact ever since. It's always good to catch up with him at MTE or when I visit Atlanta. It's been a long time coming to have him on the show and I'm glad I finally reached out. Yasir started out in detailing looking for a way to make some extra money. His first go around as a detailer, he would schedule with clients at local businesses and take their cars to the local self-serve car wash. After a while he knew he needed to better himself and that's where the training came in. After attending Renny Doyle's training, Yasir had the confidence he needed to understand his worth and thus increased his pricing to reflect. Yasir has become one of the most highly recognized members in the Detail Mafia and has had the honor of working on the Air Force One project.

WOYM: Our most controversial episode ever?? What would it take for the detailing industry to be regulated and do you think it should or could it happen?

Barry Theal joins us as we ask the question, what would it take for the detailing industry to be regulated and do you think it should be or could it be? This question has many variables to it, and everyone might not think it's a good idea, but we still have to ask it. With so many detailers complaining about how easy it is for just anyone with a bucket to get into this industry, maybe regulating it or making certifications mandatory might be the way to go. On the flip side every one of us got into this industry, because we left a car wash or because we had a love for cleaning our own cars. If a mandatory certification was required how many of us would be here today? The IDA is an organization that detailers look to to help make those certified stand out more to the consumer. Some detailers feel that the IDA doesn't do the things they say, and they have complaints about that. Barry did a great job helping us answer some of the questions about the IDA while still letting us know that they have their faults and are working on them. While this is a question that will probably spark some controversy we hope that it gets people thinking. Both sides of the argument need to understand that until we start working together and bridging the gap things will never change.

She's travelled the world for competitions and even won world championships. Now she's one of those "Crazy Barrel Girls" as they say on Yellowstone. Her dad owns and operates multiple car washes and that's where Chloe got her start in detailing. At 17 she was cleaning her friends' cars and making side money while in school. After realizing she couldn't handle both college and running a business, she left school. Chloe is 25 now and she is about to open her own touchless car wash to run alongside her detailing business.

MTE DAY 2 LIVE

MTE day 2 was another crazy day filled with amazing guests. We started the day talking to El Hajj Yasir Waqaar, who I met years ago at Detail Fest, and we've remained friends ever since. Next up we had Kelly Harris and Justyna Brys who broke the news that they are dating and giving us the scoop. Justin Labato and Rich Umbrell from Buff-n-Shine sat down next to tell us about their new revolutionary foam pads. Jason Bruno took off, so I brought on Chris DiGiovanni to talk with Jacki Orlando. Jacki was working the Pro booth and we got to ask her all about that. After a quick lunch we met up with the History channel's newest TV star Jamie Buchanan who gave us a little taste of what we can expect when we get him on for a full-length episode in the near future. Our buddy Dale Blankenship happened to be standing around, so we had him pull up a chair. We gave him a "Details after Dark" crash course on the loofah code, so he could be on the lookout when he goes to the Villages. All weekend we were next to this lovely couple from Fieldd, so we invited Harrison over to give them a chance to discuss their software. Next up was the Mad Chemist, John Hogg from Angelwax. John talked about making ceramics and waxes live at MTE and to everyone's surprise we actually could understand him. As the day wound down, we finished off MTE with Sydni Brae Gwinn and Alan Medcraf to catch up and recap on the weekend. Closing out the episode and weekend with Sydni and Alan interviewing Jason and me.

MTE Day 1 LIVE

It's day 1 of MTE and what an amazing day it turned out to be. We started off with a bang having Jason Rose and Sarah Coleman-Lienhart from Rupes. Then we had Renny Doyle join us and he gave us some of that Renny wisdom and also let his guard down and got somethings off his chest. Next we had Bill Martin join us to pick up his Paint Assassin of the Year and Paint Correction of the Year awards. Josh Broffman and his employee Taj were up next to talk about their take on MTE and how they take care of business. Alan Medcraf quickly jumped into the Vyper seat and proceeded to be the amazing guy he is, before stealing our Vyper chair ad taking it for a spin around MTE. Derrick Copes sat down with us and was just awesome to hear him speak. Derrick was also presented with the Paint Assassin Inspirational Award and immediately brought everyone to tears with how appreciative he was. William Lara came on and we talked about his growing detail supply store in Miami and what's it been like being nominated for an IDA award 4 times now, thankfully William finally won an award later that night. We finally ended the day with Michael Milord who has an amazing story and tells about his obstacles he had to overcome and how he used a story he heard from Renny Doyle to push him.
