This week, Fiona and returning guest co host Ty from Side Character Quest chat through their cozy love of 'Brindlewood Bay' by Jason Cordova, a tabletop roleplaying game that combines Murder, She Wrote with H.P. Lovecraft.

In Brindlewood Bay, you play a group of elderly women, members of the local Murder Mavens Mystery Book Club, who help the authorities solve murder cases in a picturesque New England Town.

Over the course of their investigations, they become aware of a dark occult conspiracy that connects the cases, and will eventually have to face that conspiracy in order to save their community.

Welcome to The GM's Book Club, from the hosts of The DM's Book club! A new(ish) monthly(ish) show where hosts Fiona and Hamilton take a roleplaying game, read it cover to cover, and rate, review and discuss what they think about it.

In this first episode, Fiona and Hamilton discuss 'Eat the Reich': a tabletop roleplaying game in which you, a vampire commando, are coffin-dropped into occupied Paris and must cut a bloody swathe through nazi forces en route to your ultimate goal: drinking all of Adolf Hitler’s blood.

Written by Grant Howitt and illustrated by Will Kirkby, this over-the-top, ultraviolent game is designed to be played from beginning to end in one to three sessions of carnage, blood magic, meaningful flashbacks and hundreds upon hundreds of extremely dead fascists. This week, Fiona and Hamilton wrap up warm and head out to explore Ten-Towns, a loose confederation of frontier villages found in Icewind Dale in the western Frozenfar, as described in 'Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden'.

The communities of the Ten Towns attracted those people of Faerûn determined to find a life for themselves, and those desperate to leave their former lives behind.

This week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their actual book club of The Legend of Drizzt series of fantasy novels by R.A Salvatore. Starting in chronological order, our hosts continue with 'Sojourn', the third book in The Dark Elf Trilogy, a prequel to The Icewind Dale Trilogy.

Published in 1991, 'Sojourn' follows Drizzt as he travels to the surface to escape the Underdark and his past. There he met with much adversity because of his race, but also found his true calling in life as a ranger.

This week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their actual book club of The Legend of Drizzt series of fantasy novels by R.A Salvatore. Starting in chronological order, our hosts set off with 'Exile', the second book in The Dark Elf Trilogy, a prequel to The Icewind Dale Trilogy.

Published in 1990, 'Exile' follows Drizzt Do'Urden to the wilds of the Underdark. For the ten years following his abandoning his house, he is left with no one but his faithful Guenhwyvar, a magical Panther.

From the blurb of 'Exile':

This week, Fiona and Hamilton head back to the Barrier Peaks to check out the sights in 'Lost Laboratory of Kwalish', a D&D 5e supplement which was published as part of Extra Life Fundraiser 2018.

Extra Life unites thousands of gamers around the world to play games in support of their local Children's Miracle Network Hospital. Since its inception in 2008, Extra Life has raised more than $30 million for sick and injured kids.

This anthology weaves a cosmic thread through six classic Dungeons & Dragons adventures, updated for the game’s fifth edition.

'Published in 1980, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks was designed by Gary Gygax to introduce D&D players to the science fantasy genre. The chaotic adventure features a crashed spaceship rife with malfunctioning robots, futuristic gadgetry, and weird monsters— including the first appearance of the froghemoth, an amphibious menace immortalized by Erol Otus in the illustration booklet that accompanied the adventure.'

This week, Fiona is joined by guest cohost Ty from Side Character Quest once again to discuss two different RPG tools/games to help supplement worldbuilding when running campaigns: Timeskip and Artefact.

• Timeskip by A.A. Voigt is a collaborative worldbuilding tool for jumping characters from a previously-established tabletop campaign into the future. Together with your table, imagine new outfits, new jobs, and even new family members that arrive in your characters' lives as time continues to pass. Furthermore, Timeskip allows each player to make choices about significant factions or NPCs in your campaign, altering them as well as their characters.
• Artefact by Jack Harrison/Mousehole Press is a solo TTRPG game of legendary items and transient heroes. In the classic dungeon crawl, you follow the lives of adventurers as they overcome challenges to gain prestige and, most importantly, magical treasures. But what were those treasures doing before the adventurers came along? How many aeons have passed, in silent darkness, since they were last used?

This week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their look at 'Eberron: Rising from the Last War' - the Eberron campaign setting for the 5th edition.

Created by game designer Keith Baker, Eberron was the winning entry for Wizards of the Coast's Fantasy Setting Search, a competition run in 2002 to establish a new setting for the D&D game.

Eberron combines a fantasy tone with pulp and dark adventure elements, and some non-traditional fantasy technologies such as trains, skyships, and mechanical beings which are all powered by magic.
