#78. 1 Samuel 21-24 + Psalm 7 and 27 | Trusting the LORD to Bring About His Purposes

Today we're looking at First Samuel Chapters 21 through 24, and Psalm seven and 27. I know it's a lot to cover, but I really appreciate having these narratives alongside the Psalms that were most likely written by David at that time.

Chapter 24 will be our main focus today. It would seem that David would have every right to take Saul's life at this point. It could be seen as self-defense. God has told him he's to be king, and God has promised to remove Saul's kingship, but David trusts God and His Sovereignty.

Today we are looking at so.much.Scripture! Much of it is familiar, but that's when I love to press in and see new things that we've never noticed before. Today, God showed me many things that have never stood out to me previously. As we look at first Samuel chapter 17 through 20 and Psalm 11 and 59, we first encounter the story of David and Goliath and I hope we can have fresh eyes to hear it together... especially as we look for how it points us to the coming King!

#76. 1 Samuel 13-16 | Overlooked by Man, but Chosen By God

Yesterday we saw some nuance, but today in one Samuel 13 through 16, there's going to be a little debate about the true character of King Saul. We'll also see David enter the scene... not because man initiates it, but because God recognizes the humility of his heart. #75. 1 Samuel 9-12 | People are Complicated

Today we're looking at chapters 9 through 12 of 1 Samuel. And I just have to say people are complicated. This is where we'll meet King Saul. If you've studied Scripture for long, you probably remember that he's the one that tried to kill the future King David. Usually the guy trying to kill the good guy is the bad guy... But there are some moments in today's chapters where he doesn't seem like such a bad guy--and God picks him to be King over Israel. Like I said, it's complicated and that's why it feels so real to me because people are truly complex.

#72. Ruth 1-4 | A Son Trained By His Mother to Show Hesed Love Meets the Original Proverbs 31 Woman

Today, I'll give an overview of the book of Ruth and share why this book is so important.

This book is historical, but also literarily excellent. My MacArthur Commentary says there are seven major themes that emerge in Ruth.

"First, Ruth, the Moabite, illustrates that God's redemptive plan extended beyond the Jews to Gentiles. Second, Ruth demonstrates that women are coheirs with men of God's salvation grace. Third, Ruth portrays the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31. Fourth, Ruth describes God's sovereign and providential care of seemingly unimportant people at apparently insignificant times, which later prove to be monumentally crucial to accomplishing God's will. Fifth, Ruth, along with Tamar, Rahab, and Bathsheba, stand in the genealogy of the Messianic line. Sixth, Boaz, as a type of Christ, becomes Ruth's kinsman-redeemer. Finally, David's right (and thus Christ's right) to the throne of Israel is traced back to Judah." (MacArthur Commentary, p. 289)

#71. Judges 18-21 | A Husband Who Gave Himself Up for Her

Today we'll be completing the book of Judges. ***This is certainly not an episode you would want children to listen to. We'll be looking at Judges 18 through 21, including one of the most horrifying stories in all of Scripture. It's graphic and heartbreaking, and if it were a movie, most of us would probably want to change the channel. In these four chapters of the Bible, it feels discouraging and sickening because you just want to see someone doing what is right in the Lord's eyes, and not in their own eyes, but if we look to Christ, hope remains.

#70. Judges 13-17 | He Does Not Know It Will Cost Him His Life

We're at the point of judges in which we'll be discussing Samson's story. There's really no way around this. I'm going to issue that sensitive ears warning again and say that this is ideal for mom ears... because it's Samson. When I look at his life, I think, "Things that make you go, 'hmm....' " We have to be careful to not attribute his sinful choices to the Lord, but rather see a God that is able to accomplish His purposes with very fallen people. That theme is throughout Scripture and it can give us encouragement as we're praying for those that seem to be far from God--because none of us is outside the reach of the grace of Jesus Christ.

Today I'm thoughtfully reflecting on what Christ accomplished on the cross and what this day means. We'll continue with our chronological plan and read Judges seven through nine. As Gideon obediently assembles a rag-tag, motley crue of men, and then his son in rebellion does the same thing, we can think about Jesus who selected the most unlikely of followers, and we'll rejoice that He included us.

#66. Judges 1-3 | Who Will Rescue Us?

Today we're beginning the Book of Judges, a book, some might call a heartbreaking sequel to Joshua. We'll do an overview of this book of The Bible, discuss chapters one through three, and it won't be difficult to highlight the need for a rescuer in Jesus Christ as we prepare our hearts for Easter.

While we might think of the word judges in a judicial sense, these were more political and military leaders. Although we concluded the book of Joshua with the people promising that they would stay obedient to the Lord. Here in Judges, we see the consequence of the Israelites allowing some of the Canaanites to remain within their midst in the Promised land as God had frequently warned them.

#65. Joshua 21-24 | Not One Word of the LORD Failed

Today we'll conclude the book of Joshua with chapters 21 through 24. Just like Moses, Joshua closed his time of leadership with the Israelites with some powerful speeches. We'll learn that God was faithful to every word He promised them. Reading about God's faithfulness to the Israelites makes me think about Paul's words about Jesus in 2nd Corinthians: For all the promises of God, find their yes in him! What a Savior we serve!

I know it's Easter week and I might feel a little bit odd to continue on our normal chronological plan when we want to give special attention to Christ, but as I was pulling some different moms, they encouraged me to continue with the normal reading schedule and point to Christ as much as possible so we don't lose momentum. I know you're busy doing all the things plus the extras that Easter brings, but I hope that you can continue listening to God's word!

Today's reading of Joshua 21 through 24 is a little bit drier. It's all geography and land allotments, but God has a purpose for every word in Scripture. Let's press in to learn what even surveying and land apportioning can tell us about the character of God. Whenever I see these large portions of scripture that are genealogies or geography or lists or details, what I feel resoundingly is this is real. This really happened! I hope you are increasingly convinced of that too.

#62. Joshua 9-12: The LORD Heeded the Voice of a Man

Today, as we read through Joshua 9 through 12, we are rejoicing with him and the Israelites as they're finally inhabiting the promised land. God promised to Abraham hundreds of years ago that he would give this land as a reward to Abraham's descendants, and God is faithful. But now Israel needs to be faithful to conquer the Canaanites. We've seen some victories and a few failures. How about you? This podcast started three months ago and you might be able to relate to the Israelites a little bit, having some seasons of victory and sometimes where you fell off a little bit. That's okay! It's not about perfection. It's about a pursuit of a holy God that longs to dwell with you.

#58. Deuteronomy 29-31 | This Command is Not Too Far Off For You

Today's reading of Deuteronomy 29 through 31 almost feels like an incredibly depressing graduation speech one of the themes seems to be, don't say you weren't warned or don't say you didn't know. Moses knows he's about to die, and he's giving his parting words to the nation of Israel. After 40 years of leading them, watching God do incredible works among them, they're about to enter the Promised Land, but Moses can't go with them. And after years of ministering to them, encouraging them to be faithful to the Lord, God has made Moses aware that they will fall into grave sin and apostasy. They're not going to be faithful to the Lord. What do you think this was like for him? Listen to process it more with me.

#57. Deuteronomy 26-28 | No Good Apart From You

Often it seems Christianity is a balance of contradictions, and that without the Holy Spirit, we can't possibly live within the tension. As much as I want us to embrace that He is a God that longs to dwell with us, we must never forget that he's a holy God that must be revered and honored.

In job. I said, often things happen to us that aren't the result of our own sin. But as we read today, it is certainly a biblical principle that we reap what we sow. The warnings in Deuteronomy are terrifying for those who turn away from God. If you can see these warnings coming from the love of a God jealous for His Bride, you'll understand how deeply loves you. If you turn away from him, the best thing he can do is to thwart all your plans and purposes so that you come to the end of yourself and run back to him.

#56. Deuteronomy 23-25 | A God Who Strongly Supports Those Whose Hearts Are Fully His

Do you believe we've already gone through 220 chapters of Scripture? I know it's going so fast, but remember, God is the main character of this story. When we go through this quickly, we're able to see patterns like how faithful He is and how He longs to dwell with us. But we also know that there are things we can do to hinder this relationship. #54. Deuteronomy 15-18 | Following the Example of the Servant King

In Deuteronomy 15-18, God's heart for the people to give generously so that there are not poor among them is shown. Next, the process for a servant to become part of a family is described, and then we're told the guidelines for a king of Israel. In the New Testament, Paul embraces the idea that he is a bondservant for Christ, and in Philippians, he writes that Jesus--though He was king--laid down His rights to serve us. It's this example that we have to embrace. Whatever life brings, we can follow the One who first served us.

Today we're looking at Deuteronomy chapters two through four. In this book of the Bible, Moses is recounting the history of the Nation of Israel and pointing them to faithfulness and obedience in the Promised Land that they're about to cross into without him.

Moses asks for something for himself, and God says no, but promises to give the blessing to Joshua instead. Moses continues in faithfulness... can we follow in his example?

There'll be much to say about parenting, but interestingly, it was one of these verses in Numbers that provided one of the most impactful times I've ever had in The Word.

Traveling through the wilderness is not a new experience for believers of God. Whether we arrive there due to our own sin, the sin of someone else, or if God is preparing us for something better, this is a training ground for trust. Just as Israel had to trust God to faithfully provide in a barren land, we can look to the Lord to give us our daily bread when we don't understand how He will meet our needs. In the book of Numbers, God continues to point to the greater priest and the sacrifice to come: Jesus Christ.

Even in the Old Testament, the Lord graciously provided a way for the people's sin to be atoned for. On one day of the year, the High Priest was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies. I know I've had to talk fast recently to get everything in, but I slow down just a little bit as we prepare to leave Egypt with the Israelites. It's a solemn exit and full of grieving for all who did not heed the word of the LORD. God gives specific instructions for honoring the Passover, but there are certainly things left unsaid. If you are in a season of waiting on God for guidance, be encouraged that you just may have what He wants you to have right now.

In Exodus 7-9, we see a curious tension as we're told that God will harden Pharaoh's heart, but we're also told that Pharaoh hardens his own heart. Which is it? As usual, we'll look to the rest of God's Word to give us clarity... and even when it is hard to understand, we will trust that His ways are higher than ours. We're not coming to the Word to confirm our view of God, we are coming to learn more about who He truly is. And He could not be more worthy of our worship.

Welcome to The Dwelling Place. If you are a Christian mom who wants to focus on what matters for eternity, but feels pulled in every direction by the demands of motherhood, this is for you. Moms are busy, and yet so many of us share the desire to stay rooted in God's word no matter the season or age of our kids.

This Bible plan was created to fit real mom life, not add more pressure to it. Join me as we walk through Scripture chronologically in a simple, manageable way. Each daily episode is under 10 minutes. I'll read a passage of Scripture, reflect on how it applies in our homes, often connect it to Jesus, and then pray over you and your children.

Together we'll seek clarity, peace, and direction from God's word, remembering that the Bible isn't just about us, but that we want to center our homes on him. The Lord has always intended to be our dwelling place, and Entrusted Ministries is honored to walk with you in that.
