Essential Oils that contain…
- Monoterpenes (generally antibacterial, antiviral – also expectorant, decongestant, analgesic, mucolytic (drying)
- huge chemical family found in many EOs
- great airborne deodorizers
- citrus: grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, bergamot, rosemary, juniper berry, fir balsam, frankincense, pine, nutmeg
- Sesquiterpenes (harder to generalize, but often antibacterial): cedarwood, German chamomile, ginger
- Monoterpenols (antiviral, antibacterial): basil, citronella, geranium, lavandin, peppermint
- Phenols (strong bactericidal, anti-infectious, immune stimulant): cinnamon, clove, thyme, oregano
- irritating to skin & mucous membranes, restrict duration
Another way to break it down:
- Antibacterial (so many): anise, basil, bay, bergamot, black pepper, cajuput, cardamom, Roman chamomile, cistus, clary sage, clove, eucalyptus, fennel, fir needle, geranium, grapefruit (citrus), helichrysum (immortelle), juniper, lavender, lemon, marjoram, neroli, oregano, patchouli, peppermint, pine, Ravensara, rose, rosemary, spearmint, tea tree (Australia & New Zealand aka Manuka), thyme, vetiver, yarrow, ylang ylang
- use these for general cleaning: counter tops, toilets, refrigerators
- use citrus (grapefruit) to clean produce (just a couple drops in the water)
- Antimicrobial: basil, bay, black pepper, cajuput, cardamom, Roman chamomile, cinnamon, cistus, clove, fennel, helichrysum, juniper, lavender, marjoram, neroli, oregano, patchouli, peppermint, pine, Ravensara, rose, sandalwood, tea tree (both), thyme, vetiver, yarrow, ylang ylang
- also good for general cleaning
- Antiviral: anise, basil, bay, bergamot, black pepper, cajuput, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, helichrysum, jasmine, marjoram, patchouli, peppermint, pine, Ravensara, rose, sandalwood, tea tree (both), thyme, vetiver, yarrow, ylang ylang
- great during cold and flu season: spray everything, use as a hand sanitizer
How to use:
- Diffuser: put a few drops in a diffuser to help clean the air and prevent the spread of viruses
- Safety: caution kids & pets

We are having another beautiful day here in Colorado! One positive thing about being home is knocking out some the unending home projects. Yesterday, our family attacked the garage and cleaned up the front garden beds. It was so nice to spend a day in the sunshine and being able to get back to gardening even if it is just cleaning out up the beds. I hope you and your family are also finding joy in accomplishing some of the projects around your home. Today we are going to talk about another way you can boost your spirits and bring happiness and peace into your home, and that is creating your own bedroom sanctuary. Doesn't the word sanctuary just give you a sense of peace and calm! Well we are in for a treat as we have the lovely Laurie James on our show today! Now on Todays episode we are going to talk about creating a safe, healthy bedroom, But many of the techniques and systems talked about on todays episode can also be applied throughout your home. The reason this is so important more now than ever is because most of us are staying in our homes to protect others as well as our selves during the pandemic. As we continue to stay inside more and more and outdoors less we need to be proactive on creating a healthy, safe home environment for our selves and our families. This includes making sure our inside air quality is the best it can be. Make sure to open up windows and doors as much as possible as indoor air quality in our homes is 5 to 100 times more polluted than outdoors. I know this seems crazy but it is true. So what else can you do to improve you air quality? Make sure you are not using air fresheners, plugs in, and your commercial based petroleum candles. The National Institutes of Health estimates that sleep-related problems affect 50 to 70 million Americans. In our first series of five podcasts we will dive into the world of sleep and learn how to obtain optimal, healthy restorative sleep through proper nutrition, powering down before bedtime, creating a bedroom sanctuary, incorporating aromatherapy for deeper sleep, and developing a cleaner, healthier bedroom through non-toxic cleaning techniques.
In our first episode on Sleep, functional nutritionist, Kelly Rice joins us to share her story as well as educate us on the impacts of nutrition on healthy sleep.
In her early 20’s Kelly Rice’s body was attacking itself. After seeking out medical help she was diagnosed with three autoimmune diseases. Desperate for help, Kelly turned to conventional medicine to find answers on how she got the diseases as well as treatments for her to get better Doctors informed her it was bad luck and nothing she could do to but take medications. Kelly felt alone and depressed. However Kelly decided she would not accept her hopeless diagnosis and set out to find the answers herself. Through heavy, detailed research and study Kelly created a diet protocol that by the 3rd day stopped her symptoms by 100% To this day, all 3 of Kelly’s autoimmune diseases are in remission. Once Kelly healed herself she knew she was onto something and went back to school for functional medicine. Today through her practice, Kelly is able to uncover the WHY behind her clients health conditions instead of masking symptoms with medications.
