Today's episode I discuss the importance of remaining happy during this Valentine's Day whether or not your have a partner.

Valentine's Day should be a thoughtful reminder of the importance of self-love, self-care, and your true emotional well-being.

Every year it seems that Valentine's Day places these large expectations on one saying that if you don't have a partner, it is a waste of time to celebrate it. well, phooey on that I say!

I began giving "self-love shopping tours" back in 2015 to help women remember that it's O.K. NOT to have a partner. They are still worthy of love. Instead, it should be a reminder that we can put ourselves first and take great care of ourselves since we're always at the hand of taking care of others.

Today I discuss some of the things to think about when looking for your best partner. It's also important to take care of yourself as well with or with one. Self-care isn't selfish, it's imperative to keep you sustainable as you reach your goals.

There's nothing more important than finding happiness within and not thinking of all of the externals that might help bring happiness to your heart. There's a huge misconception that happiness is dependent on our external factors such as being in love, having a fancy car, a big house, a new baby, etc. But true happiness comes from within. It is a choice we must make for it to be true.

Today's episode is a little nudge for you to find joy and fulfillment within yourself. I also cover the importance of celebrating all forms of love including platonic, familial, and self-love.

 I started a collection of Christmas albums after my parents passed because it was one of the traditions we had in our house growing up.  They always made me feel like they were there when I’d listen to them. 

You’re probably asking me, “Why are we talking about Christmas tunes?” Well for starters it's because today's guest is the lovely Juliette Valle who has created her first album, a wonderful Christmas album titled “Joyfully”.  Not only is it one of the most beautiful sounding Christmas albums, but there’s also a great cause that will be helped as it sells.  She is donating 100% of the profits to the National Kidney Foundation (a cause near and dear to her heart).  And, this means to the world to me as both my mom and brother were Dialysis patients.

Juliette is here today to discuss her current title holder of The Miss Florida Pageant (a title not to be taken lightly). Her new album, and how she’s making an impact with it, and how she balances it all.

Juliette is not only a young beautiful woman on the outside, but, she seems to have a heart of gold.  She’s a tremendously talented opera singer (and she’s only a junior in college).

 She’s been a classically trained vocalist since she was 8 years old.  She holds two state MPA Vocalchampionships for the category of Opera Performance in a Foreign Language. 

In 2015 she was admitted to Florida Grand Opera's teen program and became a prodigy for its Young Artists Learning Academy (YALA).

On Thanksgiving morning I was sitting at the beach doing some editing when along came a few folks strolling along the shoreline. They stopped to have a chat and I overheard one of them say "we kick off our tour tomorrow" so, of course, my ears perked up. I asked them what they did and Olivia said "we have a group called The Celtic Angels" she sings, dances, and plays the Irish drum.

Olivia Bradley and Molly Elizabeth Gibson of the Celtic Angels Christmas show are here today to share their journey on the tour and how you just never know who and how you'll get your next gig.

Olivia is a vocalist, performer, and Irish dancer based out of Atlanta, Georgia.  She has performed with professionals such as Emmet Cahill, Sarah Brightman, John Doyle, and Dave Curley.

Olivia has won the Ambassador Award in 2015 and Senior Scholarship in 2020 from Irish Traditions Atlanta, a regional branch of Comhaltas which is an organization involved in the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music. Additionally, she serves as a private voice instructor with the First Redeemer Conservatory of Music and Fine Arts in Cumming, Georgia.

Olivia is thrilled to be touring with Celtic Angels and feels incredibly blessed for the opportunity.

I hope you're having a great last few days of this not-so-nice 2020.  The holiday season is always a great time to reflecting,  be grateful, and, to think about the think about the things you want for your life, your family, and your business.     

Today's episode is about how you can add a bit of "style" to the upcoming year (new year, new you).  Do you like fashion? Or, do you think it's just a waste of time, and think people can be a slave to makeup and fashion?  Well, I don't believe we should never be a slave to anything, or, anyone for that fact, but, I do believe we should try to look our best.  If not for anyone but for ourselves.  So that we can feel better.

I believe one of the reasons behind me becoming a fashion stylist was because my love of clothing started very young.  I believe it was because I had to wear a uniform to school for 12 years of my life.  On the one hand, it made us all feel equal, yet, on the other, it made me feel like I could never be true to myself.  

So as times changed, and fashion became even more glamorous,  funky, and, cool, I couldn't wait to get out of class, run home and put on something that  I could feel like "me" when wearing it.

Have you ever worn your favorite jacket, or your favorite pair of jeans and each time you wear them, it makes you feel a certain way?   We should all be able to show our true personalities in how we look each day.  

Personal style allows us to think outside the box.  It allows us become the  "individuals" that our creator has meant for us to be.  We shouldn't have to look like a clone of someone else.  Now, as musicians, artists, and entrepreneurs,  we DEFINITELY need to show our creativity.  But, how do you do it you may ask?

I think we all go through this.  We pile our plates up as high as we can on all the amazing things we're going to do, only to get to some or none of them done that day.   Then what happens?  We beat ourselves up and think we're not worthy of getting them in the first place.  Have you ever felt this way?

One of the things I've learned through studying the masters of time-management, productivity, and, self-motivation, is that the one thing they had in common was about "acting quickly". 

Can you make a decision quickly?  Or, do you ponder on the thought about it and take so long to make a decision, the opportunity is gone?

One day back in the late 80's I had a chance to play drums on Joe Walsh's album.  I was working with Sony Music at the time and I met him and when he learned about me being a drummer, he asked me if I wanted to play on his album that he was recording at that time.  I couldn't believe my ears.  Here was THE  one and only Joe Walsh from the Eagles band.  A band I loved very much.  I also enjoyed watching my older cousin play their songs on her acoustic guitar in the 70's. 

There I was, this young 21 year old and I declined it.  I flat out said "Oh Joe, that' would be awesome, but I'm just starting out and I don't think I'm ready".  (I was so afraid I was going to fail and embarrass myself).  Can you imagine????

What would you do today if someone you looked up to asked you to do something you dreamed about doing (forever), and then there it was, right in front of you, would you take it, fake it till you make it, or say "no thank you"? 

 All I know is that if Joe asked me today, you can bet that I'd have a different answer for him.  It would be something like "Heck Yeah Joe, what time should I be there?" and then I'd freak out and try to figure out what to do.

Well, all I can say was after that day, my life changed.  No longer did I want to miss out on amazing life-changing opportunities.  I decided right then and there that I would live my life in overdrive.  Are you living your life in overdrive?

I don't know about you, but, this is one area I've been having a difficult time.  One of the ways I like to exercise in the pool.  At first, the closed the pools at our complex for the first three months.  Then, they re-opened them with limited hours (8-5) all of which I would be working and unable to get there at those times.  Now, I'm just very anxious about getting into the pool with this virus around.  

Are you feeling like you can't get your workout in they way you used to?  Do you feel like you're gaining weight because of it?  I do.  And, it's really bothering me.  So, this week I've made the decision that I will start dancing again.

Join me August 8th for one of the best workouts you'll have had in decades.  Daybreaker is a dance group from around the globe.  I first saw them when I went to see Oprah's 2020 Vision Tour in Miami this past January and they kicked off the conference.  They were such an amazing, high-energy and fun opener, we were all on our feet dancing and opening up our Chakra's it was truly spectacular.

I went to one of my first virtual experiences with them and I was blown away.  The theme was Dancing Through The Decades, they had Jefferson Starship playing via live-stream.  Debbie Allen (choreographer from The FAME movie (my mentor during my dance career), The Village People Singing via live-stream and Gloria Gaynor singing her infamous tune "I Will Survive" and JellyBean Benitez spinning the tunes via livestream.  It was truly my 2nd best Saturday morning I ever spent (Oprah was the first).

Since that time Zakiya has gone on to perform on shows with the likes of Etta James, Charles Brown, John Hammond, Taj Mahal, Charlie Musselwhite and many more.

Zakiya’s music is as broad as the multitude of genres they cover.  She is a  strong and versatile vocalist, and, Zakiya has carved out a market for herself.  The Jazzy Blues sound on her debut European CD, "Another Generation Of The Blues" and her second International release on Pointblank/Virgin, "Flavors of the Blues” takes you in and out of songs like "Hey Lady", "Baby you Busted", "Big Girl Panties" and more.

I hope everyone is healthy and staying safe during these unknown and chaotic times.

Today's episode is a quick but important one.  It's about getting yourself one step closer to reaching your goals.

Do you ask for what you want?  Or, do you think that possibly the universe will secretly know and bring it to you?  Knowing what you want is the first step to getting it.  Sometimes we're so distracted that we forget we need to stop and listen to our internal knowings, figure out what exactly we need and then go after it.

One of the best ways to getting what you want is to sit quietly where no one will distract you.  Have a  notebook and pen in hand so that you can write down the thoughts that come to mind.  

If you ask yourself this question before you go to sleep each night, and, upon awakening, you may begin to see a similar thread.  Maybe they're all based upon the same thing, maybe not.  Either way, you will get more and more answers to your questions.

Next, once you know what it is that you want, you will need to figure out how you are going to get it.  Now, this is when it gets a bit more complex.  So, one of the first things I like to do when I'm up against a toughie is to sit down with a large piece of paper (this is something that I learned from Brian Tracy) and list 20 ideas on how to achieve that thing!   And like he says, it's usually the 20th idea that is the best idea.  Try it out! 

I hope you'll find that you can achieve the things that you want more easily once you implement this system so that you can continuously use it and achieve them. 

So here's to great things coming your way.  Stay strong, keep up the good fight and most of all, stay happy and healthy!

A few years ago, I learned the importance of not only setting our goals but, also keeping a separate journal where you can actually acknowledge those achievements on the important things we set out to do for ourselves, whether it was a personal or for a business venture. 

Do you keep an acknowledgment journal?  A place where you can capture all of those amazing things that happen to you along your journey?  Keeping a journal or notebook that is solely dedicated to this purpose is crucial because when you have those days you feel blue, you can pull it out and it will make you smile again.

If you're already doing this, my hat's off to you, and if you aren't, then, its time to get started.  You've accomplished a lot of things in your time, now is the time to begin celebrating them.

Here's to many amazing things along your journey.

A couple of weekends ago, I was fortunate enough to attend the Oprah 2020 Vision Tour kickoff in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  I've been to many motivational seminars and conferences, and, I've never experienced anything like this one.

She spoke about "intentions" and, since we're in the beginning of a new year.  This is a quick episode on the importance of setting them.

Since it is a new year, I'm hoping you have all of your new year's resolutions in place.  Is playing your A-Game one of them?  If not, why not?

Today's episode is a quick little reminder that in order for us to be our best and to have our best lives, we need to step up our game and put our A Game into action.  This may mean taking small extra steps that normally might not occur and becoming more cognizant of when you may need to step up your game and become more aware of when you can give a little bit more of your time, help, or whatever resource it might be.

Showing up in a bigger way each day will give you more confidence and happiness in your life.  You can sleep well knowing you're doing the best job you can do every day.

I recently read a book called Be Obsessed or Be Average by Grant Cardone and I must say, everything he discusses in this book rang true to my belief system.

 When you have a purpose, a passion, your life's ambition to do xyz, whatever that project or passion may be.  Do you believe  deep down in your heart of hearts that you were meant to do this thing?  Here are a couple of quick questions you can ask yourself about it to see whether or not you're obsessed about it:  

Do you find it hard to tear yourself away from it when you're working on it? 

Do you think about it every waking moment of your day or, is it just something you toy around with once in a while and don't think that much about it otherwise?

Do you lay awake in bed thinking about how you're going to fuel your project?

If you've answered "yes" to any of the above, then, congratulations, you're obsessed.  If you answered "no", then you have some work to do.

In Grant's book he discusses the importance of becoming obsessed about your purpose.  To be thinking about it every waking moment and to work on it all the time.

I found if I don't have an obsession over my goals, they never seem to crystallize but when I do obsess about them, they actually come to life.

Today I want you to become obsessed about your passion.  Whether you're looking to produce a new album, write the next top selling novel or create a work of art that's going to be your masterpiece.  Please do it with love, with gusto but more importantly with obsession.

Gerardo is best known for playing the congas while performing at the original Woodstock with the infamous Jimi Hendrix in 1969. 

This month marks the 50th Year Anniversary of Woodstock and Gerardo “Jerry”  is here to give us a birds-eye view into life in the music scene at that time and what he's doing to celebrate the 50th year anniversary of Woodstock as well as a few stories that will keep you in stitches.

Gerardo is a veteran percussionist and drummer who has performed on over 200 celebrity recordings and has played with musicians such as  David Bowie, Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Destiny's Child, Stevie Nicks, Chaka Khan, and so many more.

He is also an original member of the Jazz Fusion Band – Spyro Gyra which combine Jazz, R&B, Funk and Pop Music. 

Gerardo also has his very own special event company called Gerardo Velez Productions and has produced 100's of shows since its inception in 1981, they create Galas, concert festivals and events for clients such as The New York Stock Exchange, Comedy Central, HB, Donna Karan, Miramax Films and Bank of America just to name a few.

He has also created concerts, choreography and has acted as the musical director and promoted several establishments in Las Vegas like The MGM Grand, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Harley Davidson Cafe, Luxor, Rio and Tao Resort.

Gerardo has 7 Grammy nominations under his belt along with 6 Gold & Platinum Records and 3 Amex Gold Reel Awards.

Well, I sure was glad that I did because, although I only had an hour to catch a portion of his show, I was enthralled by his playing and what he can do vocally with his mouth, I mean the sounds he can make are unbelievable, and, all real, no trickery here.  He can sound like a train, a plane or any instrument you can think of. 

Not only was I was floored with his musical talents, his story telling was truly captivating.  He makes you feel as though you’re living it right there and then.  And, let’s not forget about the humor in his show, he’ll keep you in stitches.

I knew I had to get him on the show.  I happened to post a short video of his performance on my IG account and said something to the effect “I’d love to get this guy on the LDG show” and he replied with a comment stating that “he’d love to be on the show”, well I couldn’t begin to tell you how thrilled I was.  So I’m excited to say, he’s here with us today.

A bit about Lawrence “Lipbone” Redding:

He's an award-winning vocalist, guitar player, voice instrumentalist, storyteller, songwriter, author, teacher and traveler.  He is best known for his one-man orchestra show; simultaneously playing, singing and making the instrument sounds with his mouth and without the use of a loop pedal.

151 Musically Inspired Secrets is also a one...]]>I met Lawrence "Lipbone" Redding the night he played at my friend Kathy’s backyard concert.  I hadn’t heard of him before and promised her I’d be there to catch the show. 

Well, I sure was glad that I did because, although I only had an hour to catch a portion of his show, I was enthralled by his playing and what he can do vocally with his mouth, I mean the sounds he can make are unbelievable, and, all real, no trickery here.  He can sound like a train, a plane or any instrument you can think of. 

Not only was I was floored with his musical talents, his story telling was truly captivating.  He makes you feel as though you’re living it right there and then.  And, let’s not forget about the humor in his show, he’ll keep you in stitches.

I knew I had to get him on the show.  I happened to post a short video of his performance on my IG account and said something to the effect “I’d love to get this guy on the LDG show” and he replied with a comment stating that “he’d love to be on the show”, well I couldn’t begin to tell you how thrilled I was.  So I’m excited to say, he’s here with us today.

A bit about Lawrence “Lipbone” Redding:

He's an award-winning vocalist, guitar player, voice instrumentalist, storyteller, songwriter, author, teacher and traveler.  He is best known for his one-man orchestra show; simultaneously playing, singing and making the instrument sounds with his mouth and without the use of a loop pedal.

Nelson has been playing music from a very early age, he began playing as a bassist and percussionist in over 10 bands which covered rock and roll, heavy metal, fusion, bilingual pop, smooth jazz and now in the Caribean vibe for the past 20 years.

Nelson's origin in music stems from his Puerto Rican descent.  He grew up listening to Aguinaldo music and watching his dad perform as a cuatro guitarist.  His influence helped shape the production of "Caribbean Madness" the only Caribean Riverboat Cruise series on the Connecticut River (which sold out for 5 seasons).  He's performed everywhere from Wisconsin, Michigan, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Ohio, Maryland, Florida, and the Bahamas.  He averages over 120 shows a year.  

If you ask which one phrase best describes him, most would say "Ya Mon".

We met a few years ago while he was performing with his wife, Bickley, (see episode #28) who plays the Steel Pan drums.  I immediately fell in love with their vibe.

Victoria was born in without her right forearm due to amniotic band syndrome. Noone or nothing can stop Victoria.  Her sheer will and determination will prove that her musical talent as a songwriter, singer and keyboardist will carry her to the top and stay there for years to come.

Victoria has lived all around the world, including Dubai, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Amsterdam.  She's a mix of Cuban and American descent but refers to herself as Spanish-American because Spain is where she was raised most of her life.

She began playing piano as early as 6 years old and now, at 20 she's a force to be reckoned with.

She's been on tour with Michael Franti and was generous to give us a live interview.  So we're on the bus chatting it up.  

I just love what she says about life:

"In life what I found to be crucial is to have direction and it doesn't matter how many times you change direction just as long as you're not floating. 

So if you know you're going somewhere and if you don't know where you're going, you're not going to go anywhere at all, but if you decide where to go, even if it takes you unexpected ways and you end up somewhere else, at least you went somewhere!"

Today Victoria discusses:

• How she started taking piano lessons at age 6 with her grandma.
• How she has lived in over 100 places around the globe.
• How she decided to go to school online rather than a brick and mortar school.
• Manifestation and the reality of it.
• Her method of writing her songs and music.

A marketing calendar is important to your business because if you don't schedule it on the calendar it will probably never get done.

Having a marketing calendar is a very important tool for your business.  And, if you think because you are an artist or a performer that you're not a "business person" think again.  Your art IS your business and you are the face of it.

The world of business today has changed tremendously and marketing has also changed a lot since I had my first marketing job working with Polygram Diversified Entertainment (which Jon Scher ran and is no longer in business), they were the portion of the label that handled merchandise for their roster of artists. 

My second stint in marketing was with Redcats, USA.  They owned several fashion catalogs including La Redoute, Chadwick's of Boston, Lane Bryant, Jessica London, Big & Tall for Men and Brylane Home. The one thing these jobs taught me was that it was imperative to market to the right audience and have the right products to do it.

I immediately began investigating and I found out that it was Reed Barrickman who has a tribute band called The Dirty Doors.  I was so impressed. I looked at their website and read that they were coming into my area to play at the Central Park Performing Arts Center in Largo, FL.

Immediately, I got in touch with Reed and he was gracious enough to give me an interview him before the show.

The Dirty Doors was formed in Atlanta, Georgia back in 2012 to pay tribute to one of the greatest rock bands of all time - The Doors".  The band consists of 4 members, they are: 

Reed Barrickman on vocals

Matt Boehnlein on guitar

Geoff Lewis on keyboards

and

Alex Selph on drums (although I saw the original drummer Jason Monseur who was with the band for the first three years and has since moved to North Carolina).  With each of their performances, they bring an electrical energy and excitement that words can't describe.  You must see and hear them to get the big picture.

I saw them at the Central Park Performing Arts Center (if you haven't been there to catch a show, you must check it out, it's a great place to see a concert).  

Paul was gracious enough to take time out from traveling across Florida to meet with me and give me an interview.

Kevin Offitzer is here today. He is the drummer with Stick Figure. If you're not familiar with Stick Figure, it was formed by frontman Scott Woodruff, a native from Duxbury, Massachusetts who has been portrayed as a one-man-band. Scott began recording a series of albums under the moniker of Stick Figure, he would sell tens of thousands of copies of each of his self-produced releases exclusively by word of mouth and social media, all tracks of which were recorded solo with Woodruff laying down the tracks one by one. The current live band line-up features Kevin Offitzer on drums, Tommy Suliman on bass, Kevin Bong (K-Bong) on keyboards and Johnny Cosmic on Guitar.

The band has toured with Rebelution, Dirty Heads, Collie Buddz, The Green and Tribal Seeds.

Set up in 2001, Jazz Appreciation Month a/k/a JAM was created to promote jazz both as a historical and contemporary art form.

 

Washington DC remains its main home with an extensive program of events, so if you live in that area, be sure to check out what's happening there.  If not, I'm sure your town has something cool going on.

During JAM, schools, concert halls, and libraries are encouraged to host events to get local areas more interested. So pull out your local newspapers, go online and check it out.

There was always a great tune playing in the house. Washington DC remains its main home with an extensive program of events, so if you live in that area, be sure to check out what's happening there.  If not, I'm sure your town has something cool going on.

During JAM, schools, concert halls, and libraries are encouraged to host events to get local areas more interested. So pull out your local newspapers, go online and check it out.

I thank the universe every day that I was brought up in one of the greatest cities in the world, New York City, the big apple.  New York City was the hub for the Jazz world.  I found myself going to see some of the most amazing musicians perform live.  Here are some of the best places to catch a live show:

Rebelution was on the bill on the opening night and their drummer Wesley Finley was gracious enough to give me an live interview before his show. 

For those of you who may not be familiar with Rebelution, they are a California Reggae Roots band and it all started in 2004 with 5 guys (Eric Rachmany, Matt Velasquez, Rory Carey, Marley D. Williams and Wesley Finley)who met during college while attending University of California, Santa Barbara all of which getting their degrees in religious studies (Rachmany), Anthropologie (Finley) film studies (Williams), and business economics (Carey). Matt Velasquez is no longer with the band.

In 2007 they released their first full-length album Courage to Grow which would become their breakthrough album.  The album was praised for its crafty melodies, socially conscious lyrics, and savvy musicianship.

The band plays over 100-120 shows a year.  Tours have taken them as far as Guam, Aruba, New Zealand and Europe.

They've played some of the largest music festivals including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Music Festival and have headlined and sold out Red Rocks and the Santa Barbara Bowl.

Rebelution received their first Grammy nomination in 2017 when their album Falling Into Place was nominated for the "Best Reggae Album" award.

Gwyneth has exhibited over 850 coffee cup art works in specific installations.  It all began in 2011 in the Window Space for Public Art on West 39th Street in the infamous NYC’s Garment District.  Her presence at work in the window was an instrumental part of the project.  From there, she went onto the Anthropologie window display in the UK during the London Art Festival.  Today, she now has over 1,001 coffee cup stories.  Check out her live in action on this awesome video:

Gwyneth also speaks on how she got started and how she got a chance to do work on a two year collaboration designing porcelain coffee cups with the Anthropologie stores.

Gwyneth says “When I don’t have art in my life, I have a huge amount of misplaced energy.  I just can’t imagine my life without art”.

Although she still loves drawing on coffee cups, she’s found a new inspiration for her artwork.  She now paints the construction of high rise buildings in New York City as they are being built.  Check out the short documentary The Monolith directed by Angelo Guglielmo here:

Her latest exhibit will be held February 16, 2018 through March 31st.  It will be held at the Kaufman Arcade at 132 West 36th Street in Manhattan where  she will show 20 of her most recent paintings that cover various NYC construction sites.  If you live in the city or are planning to visit, you must go see the show, you will not be disappointed.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Iration, they are an alternative Reggae group consisting of musicians formed in Isla Vista, CA.  They are a deep rooted reggae influenced band infused with elements of rock and pop which create smooth original sounds.  They’re motto is:  “We’re all about luv”.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Iration, they are an alternative Reggae group consisting of musicians formed in Isla Vista, CA.  They are a deep rooted reggae influenced band infused with elements of rock and pop which create smooth original sounds.  They’re motto is:  “We’re all about luv”.

Joe Dickens has been touring nationally since 2008, performing nationally at festivals like Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Hangout and many others.

Zeb is from L.A. and has been playing drums since he was 8 years and old and by age 10 he was gigging in a punk and classic rock. All the while playing with various musical ensembles, working on Timpani, hand percussion and full drum set.

 

He attended the performing arts high school in California and by age 20 he was backing his first Reggae artist Mikey Dread H.R. from Bad Brains hand drumming specialist Ras Michael when came back to the states, his career skyrocketed.

 

He has worked sessions with Grammy award winning songwriters such as Diane Warren (Aerosmith and Leann Rimes) and worked with top producers such as Ashley Ingram (Des'ree), Randy Jackson and Fabian Cooke (“Lion King” Soundtrack).

 

In 1994, he helped form Detour Posse which has since become the premiere backing band of International Reggae artists from around the globe. Working over 250 shows a year, sometimes he even plays more than one bill on the show (like he did it the night I saw him live with Tribal Seeds, he also played with Fortunate Youth).

 

In 2011 Zeb performed with Grammy winning artist Shaggy on the Lopez Tonight and again in 2012 on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

 

I had the chance to see Zeb live first hand several weeks ago. They were playing with Fortunate Youth, and Pepper. The Jannus was packed to the gills and it was one of those hot, hot, humid evenings, and you'd never know it as they rocked the audience all night long.

 

Zeb was gracious enough to grant me an interview. I was so excite to meet him, because I've been listing to Tribal Seeds for about the past three years now and was really digging their sound. So, to get to watch Zeb play the skins was a real treat. His speed, chops, stamina and agility rocked the house.

 

Zeb's currently is endorsed by Super Natural Cymbals and Kick Port International. His set up is Pearl Prestige Session Drum Set Select Kit  and Pearl Hardware, Roland SPD-SX, Toca Special Edition Congas, LP Bongos and hand percussion and Pro-Mark 5B Oak Sticks.

Do you remember your first radio?  It was a hand-me-down from my big brother. It was a small transistor radio that you could plug a earplug into it (they didn't have two ear buds, one side only). A pull up antennae and basically it would only play AM radio (even though there were dials on it for FM, it wouldn't come in clearly). Me and my girlfriends would sit on our stoops in Park Slope, Brooklyn and listen to our favorite station WABC which at that time would play the Top 40 hits (mind you over and over again). We never got sick listening to those songs. I still have some of them on vinyl in my 45's collection.

 

Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if there wasn't any music in it? I couldn't even fathom the thought. Every important and non-important part of my life has a song attached to it. Music has made me happy, sad, pensive and most importantly, spiritual.

 

Do you prefer to listen to music through headphones? I do. I remember when they first made it into the mainstream. My brother and oldest sister had them. They would let me listen to their record albums with them. It was like being on another planet. From my little record player or transistor radio to now what sounded like they were playing directly in my ears. The sound was unremarkable. I was immediately hooked. To this day, I still prefer listening to music through some sort of headset/earbud. Here are a few that I love:

I still love playing my vinyl collection (they sure can withstand the test of time).  I so love the way they sound, the scratches, it just brings me back to my youth.

MutellLDG EP#029 Happy National Men's Grooming DayGreetings Gentlemen, this episode today is specifically for you (well some of it can also apply to women), but I'm dedicating this one for you guys out there.

 

Today is National Men's Grooming Day!

My question for you is this:  Do you take good care of your skin?  I'm not just referring to the skin on your face, but the skin on your body, feet, and hands as well?  What about your scalp? Your ears??

If you're saying, "not really", well then listen on.  Today I'm going to cover how we can keep all of the above in great shape and in the process you may actually look years younger.  So listen on.  

I've been a makeup artist since I was in my teens and I've been studying skincare since then as well.  

I've also studied under the best skin technicians and skincare companies like Estee Lauder's Clinique Brand, MAC and Bobbi Brown.  

There's so many ways we can easily take good care of the largest organ in our bodies -- our skin.  First is to know what your skin type is.  There are 5 main skin types:  Normal, Dry, Oily, Combination and Sensitive Skin.

With Normal Skin it's just that, no dryness, no shine, no breakouts, etc. Dry skin is when you have flakiness, tightness after you wash your face. Oily skin is when there's too much oil production and you are constantly looking very shiny.  You may even have oily hair.  Combination skin is when your T-Zone (your forehead, nose and chin) may be oily and your cheeks are dry or normal.  Then there's sensitive skin where you find that any harsh chemicals or fragrance can make you break out.   Once you know which skin type you have you can find the ideal products to keep your skin looking it's best.  

There are many products and things we can eat every day that can wreak havoc on our skin.  For instance, eating too much sugar, or drinking too many sugary beverages or drinks can irritate our skin by causing breakouts and also will give you wrinkles that much more quickly.  Smoking is another no, no.  It will cause premature aging of your skin.  So, if you're a smoker, think about the benefits of quitting today: Not only will you have less wrinkles in your skin, you'll breathe easier, give your heart a beating chance and not smell like a dirty ashtray AND you won't hurt your loved ones any longer by not giving them second hand smoke (I'm only saying this cause I used to be a smoker myself and I couldn't be happier that I've quit and yes, I know it's one of the hardest things to do but when you do, you'll be amazed at why you never did it sooner).

Back to cleaning your skin.  When you don't cleanse your skin with the proper cleansers or you're not using a daily moisturizer it will hinder your skin's collagen production (and we need collagen to keep it's elasticity and to keep wrinkles at bay).  Even if you have oily skin you should use a moisturizer.  Clinique has their yellow famous moisturizer called Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizer and there's one for oily skin called the "gel" formulation.  

Our skin needs moisturizer so drinking at least 8 tall glasses of water a day will help keep your skin plumped and look less dried out like a raisin.  Instead your skin will look like a peach, firm, fuzzy and beautiful.  

 

When you wash your face, do you just use plain old soap and water?  If so, please stop immediately.  You're drying out your skin.  Try a mild cleanser, moisturizer and a weekly masque. Here are a couple that I really love for men's skin:

A few products that I found that men really seem to love are:

Now onto hands and feet.  Do you take care of your digits?  Do you work with your hands?  Do you feel getting manicures is too feminine, for girls only?  Well guess again.  I've seen more and more men getting manicures at the salon.  But, if you still feel uncomfortable you can do one for yourself at home.  Here are a couple of products to get you started:

Sally Hansen Vitamin E & Cuticle Oil will help keep dry cuticles soft and looking less beat up.

And, if you have very dry hand, try 

Neutrogena Fast Absorbing Hand Cream  which will help keep your hands soft to the touch.  

 

Let's not forget our tootsies.  We wear shoes that get wet, or, worse, we take showers in lockerrooms at the gyms that aren't always the cleanest of places, where bacteria breeds and the last thing you need is a toe fungus.  If so, this product I've used works quick and is very easy to apply.  Just be sure to dry your feet well, spray it on every day and you'll be amazed that in a few weeks you'll see a huge difference.  Footlogix Fungal Spray  or, if you have cracked heels, this product helps heal them quickly: Footlogix Cracked Heel Formula.

Manscaping is the new thing.  Unlike women where we just pop into a salon at any time to get waxing done.  Some of you men out there may not feel as comfortable and one product that you can use at home that is painfree and easy to use is Nair Men's Hair Remover Cream.  Please do a patch test in small area first to be sure you don't have any skin sensitivity or reaction to it.

If you're one who makes a living working outdoors, then you must be sure to protect your skin everyday --even when it's overcast outside, you still can get those nasty damaging rays which will wreak havoc on your skin. I was so excited, I had never been to a women's business conference before.  I didn't know what to expect. 

When I pulled up to the parking lot of the conference center, my immediate reaction (from being an introvert) was to turn around and forget about going to the conference.  My anxiety was kicking in high gear and I didn't want to deal with meeting lots of new people. (I knew what my negative self talk was doing to me so I made a quick conscious decision to immediately dismiss those thoughts and replace them with positive ones). 

Finally, I mustered up my confidence and walked into the building.  The first ballroom I walked into Raleigh Pinskey who was on stage speaking about promoting yourself and your business.  

Raleigh immediately caught my attention.  She was discussing her at the time was her newest book release "101 Ways to Promote Yourself -- Tricks of the Trade for Taking Charge of Your Own Success by Visibility Marketing Expert". 

 

I was floored by the massive amount of information she offered about marketing tips for gaining eyes on your business. I immediately bought the tape cassettes (yes remember those?) of the talk as well as a copy of the book which changed my thought process about marketing for the rest of my life.  I still use the information we learned that weekend. It was one of the most rewarding conferences I had ever attended to this day.

Raleigh specializes in getting your name and product in front of your target audience over, and over again.

Raleigh's client list to name a few, includes the first Chicken Soup for the Soul book, performers such as Sting, McCartney, KISS, Blondie and Herbie Mann.

Raleigh immediately caught my attention.  She was discussing her at the time was her newest book release "101 Ways to Promote Yourself -- Tricks of the Trade for Taking Charge of Your Own Success by Visibility Marketing Expert". 

 

I was floored by the massive amount of information she offered about marketing tips for gaining eyes on your business. I immediately bought the tape cassettes (yes remember those?) of the talk as well as a copy of the book which changed my thought process about marketing for the rest of my life.  I still use the information we learned that weekend. It was one of the most rewarding conferences I had ever attended to this day.

Raleigh specializes in getting your name and product in front of your target audience over, and over again.

Raleigh's client list to name a few, includes the first Chicken Soup for the Soul book, performers such as Sting, McCartney, KISS, Blondie and Herbie Mann.

She transitioned to Steelpan in 2005, training under many seasoned island artists. She has opened for national groups, such as "America" and performed with many other international artists, Tony "Kitch" Paine (son of legendary Lord Kitchner), Jazz singer Joan Cartwright, Eugene Grey (touring guitarist for reggae-star Burning Spear), performed in Trinidad's International Panorama 2015 semi-final competition under the leadership of Andy Narell.

MutellLDG EP#027 JoAnne Jensen - Life on The Race TrackI love cars, the faster the better.  I've been blessed to be able to attend the Firestone Grand Prix which is held annually here in streets of downtown St. Petersburg, FL.  They actually turn the streets of the city into an amazing race track where the Formula 1 cars race around the track for a full weekend and drive for the grand prize.  It's such a fun event.  If you ever have a chance to attend, it's a must see.  It's held in the month of March.

 

It just so happened that I met JoAnne Jensen on the first day of the races.  JoAnne is our guest today. JoAnne tells us how she got into the motorsports business and how she rose up the ranks in a predominately male industry (and how you too can get involved in the business).    

 

JoAnne Jensen became involved in Motorsports in 1981 as a volunteer Marshall - a flagger, you know, the ones wearing the white suits on the corners.  It has been her good fortune to work with Formula 1, The World Endurance Cup, NASCAR, Indy Car and its earlier predecessor groups. 

 

She works for two sanctioning bodies:  Indy Car – The Premiere Open Wheel/Formula Car Group and IMSA -The Premiere Sports Car Racing Group.  She is a nationally licensed racing steward and has been a registrar and race chairman.

MutellLDG EP#024 Matt Poynter - The Hip Abduction The first annual Et Cultura Festival , a three day annual festival of music, art and film was held in downtown St. Petersburg a few weeks ago.  I'm just loving the fact that they're doing more art and music related festivals in our town.  I saw that The Hip Abduction was the headlining act for the event.  I wasn't familiar with them so I looked them up on YouTube and immediately fell in love with their sound. They're a Trop-Indie Band right here from our back yard - true native Floridians right from the St. Petersburg area.

I reached out to  Matt Poynter, the drummer for The Hip Abduction to see if he was interested in being a guest on the show and he was more than gracious to offer me not only an interview, but a press pass as well so that I would be able to shoot some footage of the show for our YouTube channel (see link below to see the video).  We met at their sound check the day of the gig.  Matt is such a great guy.  I really enjoyed our time during the interview. 

Matt tours an average of 120 days of out the year and has been the group's recording and touring drummer since 2011.  The band has had progressive success with the latest two albums, self-titled and "Gold Under the Glow" and continues to acquire new fans from around the globe.

What I love most, is the fact that THA are native Floridians and have made it nationally.  Their self-titled album was released and shot up to #2 on the iTunes Reggae Charts and #5 on the Billboard Reggae Charts in 2013.

I became mesmerized with Dyrol’s playing.  His unique style really caught my attention.  And, so did the sound of his drums.  It was a school night and had to wake early so I didn’t catch the whole show, but, I was lucky enough to meet him as I was leaving the building.  There he was taking a break with his crew and I introduced myself and we got to talking.  I asked him if he’d be a guest on the show and was thrilled when he said “yeh man”.  (I’ve been to Jamaica a number of times and loooove it). 

Dyrol was born in Jamaica.  His early mentors include Peter Brown, a 7-string bass player who taught him to “hold the groove together and let the music glide through the soul”.  His YouTube channel has over a million hits where he has a channel of drum instruction videos.  You’ve got to check it out!

One of the things I do to earn a living is event planning.  I was creating a holiday event in 2015 for an amazing IT company with about 250 attendees and was in need of a photographer.  I put an ad up on Craigslist and a man named Curt Leimbach responded to the ad.  We met to discuss the event so we could discuss what I was looking for.  We started talking about things (since I’m also a makeup artist and fashion stylist) and mentioned that I was a drummer.  He said his wife was a drummer.  Right away, I thought of this band Undercover Betty that I saw play at a bike show at the Quaker Steak & Lube Restaurant and he said yes, she’s the drummer.  Immediately I knew I had to meet Kana and get her on the show.  (And, in case you’re wondering, Curt is a wonderful photographer and did an amazing job for the event).

Kana Leimbach is a drummer and percussionist originally from Osaka Japan.  Her first introduction to drums was playing the Bass drum when she was in the 5th grade.  She started to hone her craft when she began playing at 20 years old when she met a drum teacher named Kawase Katshihiko.  She learned all the basic drum patters and skills from him.  She joined an original music rock band called Tin Carvell and also worked with a Chaka Kahan tribute band. 

In 1999 she married Curt and moved to Florida. She slowly moved into the Tampa music scene joining bands such as Red Hawk, Perco Loco All Stars, Magic a/k/a Fencewalk and Bobby G. Summers.  She joined all-female trio band, Undercover Betty in 2013.  They play the great covers along with their own unique original rock tunes. 

Kana received the 2014 Favorite Rock Drummer from the Tampa Bay Music Network and Undercover Betty has received the award for the Favorite Rocking Trio of 2014. Undercover Betty has opened for Vixen, Blondie, Way Land, Gilby Clark and Jasmine Caine.  She also continues to play New Orleans Jazz and Blues with the T-Bone Hamilton Band.

I instantly without even seeing her work that I knew I wanted her on the show.

As luck would have it, she has agreed to do the show and she's here with us in today’s episode.  Lola Blu is a multi-faceted artist with skills ranging from visual arts, music and fashion photography.  She combines her passion for music with eccentric visual art.  Her work has graced the stage with many musical sensations and currently she is in an all-female electronic duo consisting of a drummer and DJ called Blu Cartell.

Lola does two of my favorite things, art and music. Not only is she a drummer, she was also a dancer starting at age 2.  I feel like we’re kindred spirits. I love her spirit and energy.

Lola has created beautiful works of art. She draws and paints fun, images on drum heads and drum shells.  Some of the drummer clients she’s created pieces for include:  Quest Love of The Roots, Aaron Spears of Usher, Brian Frasier Moore of Madonna , Adrian Young of No Doubt, Gerald Heyward of Michael Jackson and many more.  I can’t wait for her to do one for me!!

Today, Lola gives you a birds-eye look into how she brought her talent to light and how you should always trust your instinct and follow your bliss.

MutellLDG EP#017 Ryan "Rymo" Moran - Drummer of Slightly StoopidA few weeks ago I had access to shoot the Slightly Stoopid band at the Vinoy Park in Downtown St. Petersburg.  It was an outdoor concert on the water and there couldn't have been a better place to catch such a cool and amazing sounding band. 

I was so excited to see them live (as I've been a fan for many years).  They have such a unique sound and so much energy it's truly a fun show to catch.  Their energy is contagious.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to meet with Rymo their drummer that day to do an interview, but he was generous to give me one post concert a couple of days after the show.

If you're not familiar with the band Slightly Stoopid, they're sound is a mix of Reggae and Ska with a horn section and all.  Here's a link to some of their CD's:

I asked her if she would be a guest on the show and she graciously accepted.

Tonight in this episode, Forbes will cover some tips on how to pitch your business or idea, teach you about some great healthy options on food and exercise and overall give you a boost of confidence that I feel we all need from time-to-time.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Forbes Riley, she is an actress and TV host. She has hosted more than 100 infomercials, has over 20 years of marketing products experience, has been crowned the $2 Billion Dollar Host and is a pioneer in the industry of direct TV sales. 

She's the queen of her own exercise device called the Spin Gym which sells on HSN & QVC in England.  The Spin Gym has sold millions of units worldwide.

MutellLDG EP#013 Exotic Dancer to Heavy Metal Rock & RollerWay back in the late 80's when I was a nightclub promoter in NYC, I had the chance to promote the Chippendale's all male dance review show.  I don't think I've been to a male dance review show since that time. 

I used to get a kick out of watching the women watch the male dancers and watch how crazed they became.  The nightclub would then open up to the public after the show and I always thought, "the guys at this club tonight are definitely going to get lucky!"

Fast forward thirty years later... it's my good friend's 40th birthday and she invites me to attend a male review show with a group of women who would also be attending to help celebrate her birthday.  I didn't really want to go, but, decided to go for her.  After all, I wanted to help her celebrate her birthday and have a fun night out on the town and wouldn't really be a good friend if I didn't attend.   

Once again, I was in awe of how crazed the women get over these guys.  It was a very fun, energetic show and I was impressed with how much physical work they actually did.  With all the tossing and lifting the women on stage, I didn't know how they didn't hurt themselves. 

While watching the show, I couldn't help but think how interesting it would be to interview one of the dancers and Lenny was interested.  It worked out very well since Lenny is not only "Logan the Cowboy" but he also has a band and does YouTube video instructions for guitarists wanting to learn how to play hard-rock-metal guitar riffs.

Lenny is a dancer with the Florida Thunder dance group which currently performs weekly at the Whiskey North Nightclub in Tampa.  He also does Strip-O-Grams for private birthday, bachelorette, graduation, divorce, parties etc.

He was once a certified personal trainer which got him into body building and won the AAU Natural Mr. Michigan.

I used to get a kick out of watching the women watch the male dancers and watch how crazed they became.  The nightclub would then open up to the public after the show and I always thought, "the guys at this club tonight are definitely going to get lucky!"

Fast forward thirty years later... it's my good friend's 40th birthday and she invites me to attend a male review show with a group of women who would also be attending to help celebrate her birthday.  I didn't really want to go, but, decided to go for her.  After all, I wanted to help her celebrate her birthday and have a fun night out on the town and wouldn't really be a good friend if I didn't attend.   

Once again, I was in awe of how crazed the women get over these guys.  It was a very fun, energetic show and I was impressed with how much physical work they actually did.  With all the tossing and lifting the women on stage, I didn't know how they didn't hurt themselves. 

While watching the show, I couldn't help but think how interesting it would be to interview one of the dancers and Lenny was interested.  It worked out very well since Lenny is not only "Logan the Cowboy" but he also has a band and does YouTube video instructions for guitarists wanting to learn how to play hard-rock-metal guitar riffs.

Lenny is a dancer with the Florida Thunder dance group which currently performs weekly at the Whiskey North Nightclub in Tampa.  He also does Strip-O-Grams for private birthday, bachelorette, graduation, divorce, parties etc.

He was once a certified personal trainer which got him into body building and won the AAU Natural Mr. Michigan.

April's unique, energetic and music-minded events rock the nation and now can ultimately STICK IT to breast cancer.  Her upcoming Drummathon in Dallas, TX will host over 100 drummers to raise awareness and funds for the cure.

Little did I know, that just a short few years later, I'd get the chance to befriend them and learn more about them and their music. Watching Alan play live was a true musical experience.   

Alan St. Jon is a prolific keyboard player and is an invaluable member of the Billy Squier band, his unique backing vocals and very special keyboard sound is fresh and original.  Their album "Don't Say No" sold over six million copies.

World renowned writer and critic Chuck Eddy's book entitled "The 500 Greatest Rock Albums in the Universe" rated Billy Squier's album "Don't Say No" at number 67 and "The Tale of the Tape" at number 122.

Alan has a long list of accolades and has worked with musicians whether supporting their tour or recording on their albums, the list is too long to put down in words here, but, some of them are:
