]]>Lots and lots has happened since the last update from Boudicea. As they left Gigha loaded with some sound local knowledge from a fisherman the row has been a battle of tides, weather, getting tangled in fishing gear and being anchored just below Allan’s favourite whisky distillery on Jura.

Rowing up the east coast of Ireland has been great. Good conditions and weather meant that Allan and Mhairi were able to keep a very steady 6 hours on 6 hours rowing pattern all the way up the coast.

After successfully crossing the busy ports of Dublin and Belfast they arrived in Red Bay on the Antrim Coast to be met by one of the volunteer RNLI Coxswains who came out to visit them. It was carnival night in the village and they were treated to an incredible fireworks display.

But there was no carnival on Boudicea because just a few tantalising hours of rowing away was the Scottish coastline. So hauling anchor while Red Bay partied Boudicea slipped out of the bay and headed home to Scotland.

But now a big decision looms. Should they cross The Irish Sea and go north or hug the coast of Wales and risk being affected by weather again.

After 7 days going nowhere their spirits remain incredibly high and they have had time to reflect on The Long Row Home so far.

As well as the rowing they reflect on how the row is changing them and their outlook on life for when they return to life on land.

There is a fine balance between their desire to get moving again and the risk of pushing themselves in poor conditions, but there is hope on the horizon in a weather window coming that coincides with the tide very early on Monday morning.

]]>It’s been a week since Allan and Mhairi entered Newtown Creek on the Isle of Wight to seek shelter from the southerly winds. After 7 days going nowhere their spirits remain incredibly high and they have had time to reflect on The Long Row Home so far.

As well as the rowing they reflect on how the row is changing them and their outlook on life for when they return to life on land.

There is a fine balance between their desire to get moving again and the risk of pushing themselves in poor conditions, but there is hope on the horizon in a weather window coming that coincides with the tide very early on Monday morning.

At anchor in a spot they lovingly describe as the Washing Machine, Allan, Mhairi and Boudicea are being tossed and turned around in all directions…and the cold sweats start to appear.

Thankfully, that didn’t last too long and visits from Tynemouth Lifeboat and a VHF chat with a fellow Wick Lifeboat volunteer who was on a passing workboat really lifted their spirits.

The last few days have had their peaks and troughs. A great row south from Holy Island but long spells on the oars against the tide has left them physically and mentally exhausted at times. A great row on Thursday had them flying south along the coast with calm winds and following tides which really lifts them as well as the support from the shore which is making a huge difference

Will we ever hear Allan on the oars?

The sea crossing to get there threw it all at them, big waves in the dark, surging tides pushing them on, visits from passing boats and Ross in his sea kayak who was heading north up the coast and stopped for a chat.

Getting into the safe anchorage at Holy Island was a battle against fast tides so they dropped anchor before they reached safety….only for it to drag along the seabed. So the big “Christmas” anchor had to come out to hold them fast.

Allan and Mhairi let go their lines in Wick Harbour and navigate Boudicea out into the North Sea to start The Long Row Home.

Joined by friends, family, well-wishers on the shore and a small flotilla of boats (including a very noisy RNLI lifeboat) we’re onboard with them as they leave.

The Long Row Home is about pushing boundaries, testing limits, and raising funds for two incredible charities: the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) and SCAA (Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance).
