A Full Reflection On the Evolution of The Mt. SAC Podcast

In this special reflection episode, we revisit the highlights and transformative moments from our first season that launched on March 3rd, 2018 all the way to its tenth season. Hosts, Chisa Uyeki and Ivan Sanchez reflect, along with the podcast’s long-time producer of eight and half years since the podcast’s inception, Christina Barsi, on how the show evolved to bring listeners into real experiences on campus.

From capturing live in-person events to becoming a key resource component in keeping the campus connected during the swift changes that took place during covid to finding our way back to capturing in-person experiences on campus in our most recent season - the podcast has served as both a recorded history of the resiliency Mt. SAC faculty and students alike have shown and as a way to connect to current events and resources that help our students succeed.

As we celebrate the journey so far, we also mark a heartfelt transition, wishing our producer, Christina Barsi, all the best on her new endeavours as life shifts and her time with us comes to an end. Join us as we look back, reflect, and gear up for future seasons together!

A note from our producer:

This project allowed me the unique opportunity to learn so much about myself, what I’m capable of, and the craft of audio storytelling, along with how to gently guide others in a process that often asks you to step out of your comfort zone for the bigger goal of creating the space and platform for others to shine, to share or to simply cover much needed information.

When this project began, it asked me to step out of my comfort zone at every turn but in doing so - I discovered a version of myself that I didn’t know was there. It shaped my professional career and craft with a unique skillset that is hard to find in podcast production these days and it opened me up to a world of issues that I now deeply care about and embed in my approach to my work, how I hire and how I advocate for others who are a part of my industry or want to be. I attribute so much of the person I’ve evolved into over these past eight and a half years…to my work with this podcast. I am forever grateful and I will miss it. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey.

Navigating Intersectional Oppression & Fostering Campus Safety at Mt. SAC with April Tellez Episode 232

On March 18, 2026, Dolores Huerta, distinguished farmworker rights activist and feminist, published a statement sharing her personal story of surviving sexual abuse and rape perpetrated by Cesar Chavez. In her statement she shared that she, “carried this secret for as long as I did because building the movement and securing farmworker rights was my life’s work.” She put the movement ahead of herself because of her commitment to improving the lives of farm workers and their families.

In this episode we will be talking with April Tellez, Mt. SAC professor of History and of Ethnic Studies, who authored the book, Dolores Huerta: A Life in American History. Join us as we reflect on the message of Dolores Huerta’s work, the repercussions of intersectional oppression, and how we can contribute to providing safe learning environments for students.

Mt. SAC Behavioral Health (for students) multi-disciplinary, multilingual, and multiethnic team of licensed professionals that offer short-term confidential mental health counseling and crisis intervention.

Mt. SAC Behavior and Wellness Team (BW&T) Non-emergency multidisciplinary campus team that guides the campus community in effectively assessing and addressing concerning and/or threatening behavior. The B&WT aims to support students who may be experiencing an emotional problem or before their behavior reaches a potentially dangerous level. Mt. Students In Conversation: Connecting Classroom Learning to Real Issues at Mt. SAC's Sociology Research Showcase Episode 231

Today, we are highlighting student research from Mt. SAC's Sociology Research Showcase!

The Sociology Research Showcase is a campus wide event that gives students an opportunity to share original empirical research in STEM, Social Sciences as well as developing research projects and literature reviews. The event includes projects from multiple areas of study and serves as a way to celebrate the wonderful research being done by our students right here on our campus . During this event, our cohost Ivan Sanchez, spoke to many student participants, some who brought family, friends, and significant others to celebrate their work.

At its heart, the showcase is about giving students a space to be seen as researchers, giving them a chance to take the questions they have been developing in class or in partnership with a faculty mentor and present them in a public academic setting.

One of the most exciting things about the showcase is the range of topics students explore (which we've listed for you below). While the diversity in projects is always pleasant to see, they all show how student research can connect classroom learning to real public issues and topics.

In partnership with the Sociology department, psychology, the honors center, the equity center, the humanities and social sciences division, and many more partners across campus we put together this event every year. Enjoy!

Creating A Community of Belonging with Father Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries Episode 230

Since the 1980s, Father Greg Boyle has embraced his parish community with the radical approach of love, compassion, and humanity. He founded Homeboy Industries' gang rehabilitation and re-entry programs to engage former gang members and others in need, in their own healing through building kinship and connection.

At Mt. SAC, the Rising Scholar's program fosters the potential and promise of formerly incarcerated or system-impacted students by providing wrap-around support through pathways at Mt. SAC. In today's episode we are featuring a talk by Fr. Greg Boyle that was sponsored by Mt. SAC Equity Center and Rising Scholars.

Ensuring equity of access is core to the mission of Librarians- whether that is access to information, physical access to materials, digital access, or access to technology. So it is a natural fit for Librarians to provide leadership in creative methods to support student access to textbooks.

In this episode we'll hear from Michelle Newhart, Instructional Designer, that features a Spring Flex Day Session that she originally presented with Hugo Aguilera, Applications Training Specialist called Accessibility By Design-Preparing Accessible Courses to Meet ADA Title II Deadline. The session focuses on why accessibility matters, what the April 2026 deadline means for Mt. SAC, and how accessibility in Canvas is crucial to meeting this deadline.

Some of the themes that are explored are the difference between accessibility and accommodations, how meeting the deadline can be approached in a manageable way, and how the main priority is to make actively used digital content more accessible.

The ADA Title II deadline is not just a legal requirement but related to our commitment to DEISA+ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice, and Access Plus). This work is important in creating an equitable and just learning environment for all students, and not just for those without disabilities.

Making Online Teaching Easier with Support & Tools from the Faculty Center for Learning Technology Episode 227

If you're like many faculty, you've probably noticed the sharp increase in courses being offered online. This shift into the online learning space, especially after the pandemic, has made it possible for students to learn in more ways than just sitting in a classroom. It opens the door for students balancing work, family, and other responsibilities, but it has also brought new challenges for faculty as we think about how to design engaging and effective courses.

Thankfully, here at Mt. SAC we have a small but dedicated team called the Faculty Center for Learning Technology, or FCLT. In this episode we talk with them about course design tools, video options, and strategies that help make online and hybrid learning work well for students.

While teaching online can be challenging, it is also worth the effort when it expands access and supports student success. The FCLT team also invites faculty to stop by, connect, and take advantage of the support they offer.

Competency Based Education (CBE) Explained Episode 226

In our ever-evolving work to increase access to college education, Mt. SAC is one of seven California Community Colleges to pilot a new learning modality, Direct Assessment Competency-Based Education, or CBE. Through Mt. SAC's Chancellor's office approved and ACCJC accredited CBE program students will be able to earn an AA in Kinesiology at their own pace. CBE is outcomes-based so students learn and then demonstrate their knowledge and abilities through direct assessment. Although the modality and assessments are different, the classes and the rigor are the same.

In today's episode we are joining Mike Hood, Astronomy Professor and CBE Faculty Lead, Lani Ruh, Co-Coordinator Kinesiology Professor, and Eva Figueroa Morales, Instructional Designer, at their Spring Flex Day session, to learn more about this new modality and the opportunities it offers for those who have not been able to fit traditional classes into their lives.

Milan Foston, Civil Litigation & Environmental Lawyer at Skane Mills LLP

Milan Foster is a Civil Litigation and Environmental Law Attorney and board member of Aquatic Futures Foundation. Milan is a PADI certified Rescue Diver and PADI Divemaster Candidate. Milan grows coral in her home reef aquarium and regularly scuba dives in the Pacific Ocean. In addition to her law degree, Milan has certificates in: Aquarium Maintenance, Global Warming, Marine Biology and Harvard Business School's Business and Climate Change course. Milan is trained in the ways businesses are adapting their customs and standards in response to the current climate environmental impacts on land and oceans. Milan uses her legal and scientific education to generate sustainability methods for private businesses while supporting marine conservation programs and providing insight into Ocean and Coastal Law and Policy. Janielle Cuala, Ph.D. Candidate in Medical Biophysics at USC Keck School of Medicine

My name is Janielle Cuala. I started at LA Community College before transferring to Cal State LA, where I earned my BS in Biochemistry. Now, I am a PhD Candidate in Medical Biophysics at USC's Keck School of Medicine. At the Children's Hospital, I conduct research to find a cure for diabetes. I'm also the President of the Graduate Student Government, representing nearly 30,000 students and trying to enhance graduate life. I'm passionate about bridging science and leadership through biotech startups, nonprofits, science communication, and mentoring. Fun Fact: I was born and raised on Guam and am a certified scuba diver.

Nurse Unseen - A Panel Conversation with Filipino-American Filmmaker Michele Josue Episode 224

Today's episode comes from a campus film screening and panel focused on Nurses Unseen, a documentary about the courageous efforts of Filipino American nurses who played a key role during the Covid 19 pandemic as they faced a resurgence of Asian hate and cultural invisibility.

Following the screening, Mt SAC's Equity Center hosted a panel discussion with the film's director, Michele Josue, alongside Mt SAC's nursing faculty Sophie Boquiren, Victoria Abatay Motoyer, as well as sociologist Dr. Anthony Ocampo from Cal Poly Pomona, who also appears in the film.

The film is a testament to cultural resiliency and highlights the historical and social forces shaping Filipino migration and nursing experiences. You'll hear panelists share the moments that resonated with them most and reflect on the spiritual and physical toll of being on the frontlines of a pandemic. Other themes touch on the embeddedness of care work within Filipino communities, and how the film itself represents a grassroot act of resistance in support of acknowledging Filipino contributions and encouraging the growth of Filipino media more broadly.

We hope this offers you a concrete example of how films, and film screenings can facilitate impactful dialogues that support learning. And we hope this encourages you to attend future screenings and use film to invite your students into these learning spaces.

Today we are taking on a topic that sits at the intersection of high school and college education: Dual Enrollment. With the increase of dual enrollment courses at Mt SAC and across the state, we wanted to explore the lived realities of the instructors who are teaching these courses and leading the way for high school student success at the college level.

I had the privilege of sitting down with two seasoned instructors, Felix Jollevet and Sonya Masl as well as Mt SAC's new Dual Enrollment Faculty Liaison, Candace Leuthold. We had a chance to explore what dual enrollment actually is, and what it means to teach college level material to high school students including the unique joys and challenges. Teaching Under Fascism: Ideological Framing for Learning and Science Episode 222

How do political ideologies like fascism take shape, spread, and gain power over the way we think and act? Justin Freebourn, Ph.D. tackles this big question in this episode. He holds his ph.D. in Political Science from UC Riverside and has published work in the journals of Party Politics, Political Research Quarterly, and Legislative Studies Quarterly.

As Freebourn shares in his talk from Fall Flex Day 2025 called "Teaching Under Fascism: Ideological Framing for Learning and Science", he examinates how social sciences can shed light on how political shifts can lead to erosion of democratic competition making us fall into a system of exclusion and control. While many of us celebrate Thanksgiving, we must also acknowledge that it is a holiday often observed in a way that erases the lived experiences of Indigenous people and ignores the ongoing impact of colonial oppression. In this episode taken from Fall Flex Day 2025, we hand the microphone over to Dr. Primavera Reza-Nakonechny. In this workshop, she breaks down the collaborative effort and complexity behind drafting a meaningful land acknowledgement, sheds light on the attempt to censor specific words in education, and the persistent attempts at historical erasure.

Experiential Learning Beyond Borders - Mt. SAC's Osaka Study Abroad Program Episode 219

Professor Keiko Tsurumi was so inspired by the growth and resilience of the students who participated in the Mt. SAC Osaka Program that she wanted to share their experiences with all of us. As you'll hear, the program is the result of years of planning and coordination, a testament to Tsurumi-Sensei's dedication to supporting student learning.

As you listen to Professor Tsurumi, and students Gio and Diego, you'll hear the impact of combining high expectations with resolute compassion for students. This study abroad program set a high bar, and yet, the students continued with intention, to put themselves in positions to learn and grow, like asking strangers for directions in a new language, even when Google Maps is a click away.

They had difficult moments that tested them, but you'll hear the way they worked through it and found ways to engage in immersive learning with growing confidence.

We're excited to share this conversation on experiential learning beyond borders- it offers an opportunity to reflect on the power of immersive education and consider ways we can apply similar approaches to learning locally. Enjoy!

Supporting Student Parents with The Parenting Institute Episode 214

While parenting is tremendously rewarding, it is challenging on many levels. For our students who are also parents or guardians, they have to balance the demands of caring for children and the demands of college.

Today we delve into this topic and how to best support these students. We talk with Dr. Julie Marquez, who directs a number of student support programs, including EOPS and Care. Dr. Marquez shares her knowledge of services available on campus and off, as well as actions we can all take to contribute to a family-friendly college culture which supports these students. The Parent Institute is an interactive and inclusive learning experience for Mt. The Right To Read: Combatting Coordinated Censorship Episode 212

This film began as a search for one family's roots but became an exploration of a broader story about hidden histories of intersectional communities forged in the segregated south. What does it really mean to acknowledge the land? In this episode, we have an insightful conversation with Primavera Reza-Nakonechny, director of Mt. SAC's First Peoples' Native Center and a descendant of the Tarahumara or Raramuri people. They are joined by Alisa Chiula, a Mt SAC student of Pueblo descent. Our conversation is led by our host Chisa Uyeki, guiding us through a conversation on the importance of language, the practices and meaning behind land acknowledgments, how Mt. SAC is working to craft a Land Acknowledgement with tribal input, and how we can go beyond statements into meaningful actions.

Empowering Students: Constitution Day and the Importance of Voting with Kelly Rivera Episode 204

Each September 17th the Geography and Political Science Department hosts a campus-wide event to highlight Constitution Day.

This year, a student and alumna of the Mt. SAC Forensic program debated on forced choice voting, and a panel of faculty presented on election-related topics including the current issues motivating the political party bases, political communication, the psychology of polarization, how state election laws vary, and the California proposition process, as well as how to become a more informed voter.

In this episode we hear from students who attended the Constitution Day event and you'll join me for a sit down with Kelly Rivera, Constitution Day organizer, Chair of the Geography and Political Science Department, and a friend of the POD, (that is, a friend of the Mt. SAC Podcast), to discuss Constitution Day. Kelly will share with us how the Constitution (and Constitution Day) connects to voting and elections in our democracy, and will suggest ways to encourage political engagement and voting.

To bring attention to book banning as an equity issue, the Mt. SAC Library and Mt. SAC Equity center collaborated to host Isabel Quintero, the author of Gabbi, A Girl In Pieces. Gabbi has been challenged and banned from libraries in the United States and in this episode, our host Chisa Uyeki and Isabel Quintero sit down for a conversation about Gabi and the power and healing effects of writing and sharing stories, particularly the stories that have been pushed to the periphery.

Book challenges, at their best may seem to come from an attempt to protect, but they are actually an attempt to control. To control others reading and beyond that, others thoughts and knowledge. But the reality is that not reading about subjects doesn't make them go away.

Without access to books that speak to the authentic reality of lives, which include addiction, homophobia, sexual assault, or the impact of unattainable, white centered standards on girls of color, we are still left with addiction, homophobia, sexual assault, and unattainable, white centered standards, but without the solace, solidarity, or opportunities to build self understanding that can be found between the covers of books.

We also miss out on the joy, empowerment, and stories of love and success. We encourage you to read books that have been challenged or banned. Both the library and the multicultural center have collections of banned books for you to explore. We hope you will delve into the lived experiences of people like and unlike yourself, and we celebrate and honor the lived experiences of persons whose stories have been hidden or pushed to the periphery.

What is burnout? What causes burnout? How can we recover from burnout? How

can we take on the work of social and environmental justice and anti-racism in a sustainable

manner that won't leave us burnt out?

While most of us have, unfortunately, seen the impact of burnout on ourselves, colleagues, and students, we may not have a shared understanding of the root causes or how to address burnout, manage stressors, and develop meaningful ways to break stress cycles and build resiliency. Additionally, the role and responsibility of individuals, institutions, and systems play a role in perpetuating a culture which leads to burnout.

Chisa Uyeki, Collection Development Librarian Faculty of 17-years embarked on a year-long sabbatical research project during which she studied burnout, it's causes, and how to recover, and she shared her findings with us at our 2024 Spring Flex Day to contribute to building a community of care at Mt. Brief Summary of Illegally Yours

About the Memoir: Illegally Yours: A Memoir is a heartwarming, comical look at how this struggling Ecuadorian immigrant family bonded together to navigate Rafa's school life, his parents' work lives, and their shared secret life as undocumented Americans, determined to make the best of their always turbulent and sometimes dangerous American existence. From using the Ricky Martin/Jennifer Lopez "Latin Explosion" to his social advantage in the '90s to how his parents—doctors in their home country of Ecuador—were reduced to working menial jobs in the US, the family's secret became their struggle, and their struggle became their hustle. An alternatingly hilarious and touching exploration of belonging and identity, Illegally Yours revolves around one very simple question: What does it mean to be American?

About the Author: Rafael Agustin is a Mt. SAC alumnus, and a writer on the award-winning The CW show, Jane the Virgin. He is a Sundance Fellow for his TV family comedy, Illegal, based on his life as a formerly undocumented American. Rafael currently serves as Executive Director of the Latino Film Institute (LFI), where he oversees the Youth Cinema Project, their statewide project-based learning educational film program, and the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF). In 2018, the LA Weekly named Rafael one of the fifty most essential people in Los Angeles. Also in 2018, the United Nations invited Rafael to speak at their 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In Honor Of Mika Klein, Re-Release: Visible & Invisible Sustainability Explained by Mika Klein Episode 138

On December 22nd of 2021, we regret to announce that we lost Mika Klein, whose big heart failed her and took her away from us at a much too early age. She was a talented architect, a visionary planner, an environmental steward, and a friend to all. She loved her work at Mt. SAC, where she wove together her sense of social justice and environmental justice with her responsibilities as an architectural planner. She will be forever missed. This Friday, January 28th at 11 A.M. Mika's memorial service will be held at the Hillmer Stadium at Mt SAC. We will celebrate her life and share memories. Please join us if you can. For now, we hope you enjoy this moment in time that we were able to capture with Mika as she talks with Tania Anders about Mt. SAC's climate action plan and our campus's accomplishment so far, the greenhouse gas inventory, LEED certified buildings and so much more.

Koji Uesugi, Dean of Student Services, Rigo Estrada, Basic Needs Coordinator, and Pauline Swartz, Library faculty and Basic Needs Committee Faculty Co-chair, join us today for a very important discussion about Basic Needs. In 2016 and 2018, more than 40,000 students at 57 California Community Colleges responded to The Hope Center's #RealCollegeSurvey about student experiences of college life. 50% of respondents reported food insecurity in the past 30 days, 60% reported housing insecurity in the previous year, and 19% reported being homeless in the previous year. Mt. SAC has a range of Basic Needs support available, including CalFresh, the Mountie Fresh Food Pantry, Housing Referrals, the Laptop Loaner program, and more. We know that faculty play an important role in connecting students to Basic Needs support, so thanks for joining us today to learn more about the resources available to support the health, wellness, safety, and academic success of your students. Luz Santana, the co-director of Right Question Institute and Andrew Minigan director of strategy for the Education Program of The Question Formulation Technique all the way from Boston. They introduce us to the process and emphasize why there is such an importance to asking questions, especially good ones. You can even follow along with the exercises at home!

The Harvard Education publishing group says….

Typically, questions are seen as the province of teachers, who spend years figuring out how to craft questions and fine-tune them to stimulate students' curiosity or engage them more effectively. We have found that teaching students to ask their own questions can accomplish these same goals while teaching a critical lifelong skill.

The Right Question Institute (RQI) [rightquestion.org] began its work with a dropout prevention program in Lawrence, Massachusetts, funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, when parents told [them] they were not participating in their children's education because they "don't even know what to ask."…Parents had identified an obstacle that prevents many people from learning, from thinking for themselves, from doing their own problem solving, and from becoming more self-sufficient.

Mt. SAC Students Leaders Of Change: Indigenous Peoples Day EPISODE 68

The Mt. SAC campus honored Indigenous Peoples Day on October 14th and if you missed the celebration that took place at the Indigenous Peoples Fountain in front of the Mt. SAC Library, here is your chance to hear from those who participated talk about their message and why Indigenous Peoples Day is important. According to the SAC Media article "Why Mt. SAC Dropped Columbus Day," "In 2016, the Mt. SAC Associated Students voted 16 to 2 and passed a resolution to change Christopher Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day....thanks to the hard work and activism of Mt. SAC MEChistas and the Mt. SAC Native American Intertribal Student Alliance." According to the article: "Mt. SAC renamed the holiday before the city of Los Angeles did. It wasn't until 2018 that LA celebrated their first Indigenous Day that included all-day celebrations of Native American history and culture. Other states such as New Mexico, Maine and Wisconsin have also voted to rename Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples Day.

Since the change, both MEChA and NAISA celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day yearly. The celebrations grow every year, and more student organizations have joined in collaboration."

During 2019's summer session, Sun Ezzell talked with a few students who were willing to share their experiences taking summer classes, at a time when many of their friends are taking time off and enjoying the heat. One thing they all seemed to have in common was a full plate of obligations and that juggling life along with classes is always a feat.

It's important to note that many facilities to aid students are still open during the summer like the tutoring centers, the library, the financial aid offices and careers services. So if you happen to be teaching this term, make sure to tell your classes about these opportunities.

A Lavender Graduation To Remember EPISODE 51

As the school year begins to wind down we created a unique and very special episode for you. Captured by Sun Ezzell we bring you Mt. SAC's Lavender Graduation.

Lavender Graduation is a special annual graduation ceremony that is conducted on numerous campuses, in which it recognizes and honors the accomplishments of graduating/transferring LGBTQ+ students. In our case we also highlight the contributions and successes of the Pride Center, Mt. SAC staff and student employees, and our allies across campus and in the community. This year the ceremony was lead by the Pride Center Director Melinda Bowen. Mt. SAC's President and CEO Bill Scroggins also delivers a special message to the new graduates.

The Lavender Graduation Ceremony was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a Jewish Lesbian, who was denied the opportunity to attend the graduations of her biological children because of her own sexual orientation.

Why Lavender? It is a combination of the pink triangle that gay men were forced to wear in concentration camps and the black triangle designating lesbians as political prisoners in Nazi Germany. The LGBTQ civil rights movement took these symbols of hatred and combined them to make symbols and color of pride and community.

The first Lavender Graduation began at the University of Michigan in 1995, with three graduates. Today, over 200 colleges and universities offer lavender graduation ceremonies for their students.

These events are so important because they provide a sense of community for minority students who often experience tremendous culture shock at their impersonalized institutions. For many students they are the payoff for staying in school. Here is a glimpse at Mt. SAC's third annual Lavender Graduation.
