In this episode we speak to NEBOSH Chief Executive Andy Shenstone on the training provider’s recently announced three-year strategy.

Andy Shenstone joined NEBOSH in March 2023 and one of the first things on his to-do list was to get to grips with the company’s strategic plan.

“It was perfect timing really,” Andy says reflecting on the process. “The organisation haven't had a a full strategy for some time, so one of my key priorities that I'd agreed with my chair and my board was that we needed to establish a new strategy for the forthcoming period, and that's what we've accomplished.”

Published in April this year, NEBOSH 2024-2027 Strategy – Developing our potential, is formed of seven ‘building blocks’: Assessment and Quality; People and Culture; Learning Partners; Ethical Practice; IT-Enabled Business Transformation; Social Purpose; and Business and Market Development.

The report cites the ILO’s statistic that 2.3 million people die globally every year because of work-related accidents or diseases. In the podcast, Andy says these numbers are motivation for himself and his team and through heavy collaboration with a number of different partners, the charity can make a difference. "We have a real focus on equipping the workforce of the future to get home safe from work,” he says. "Ans that really is the bottom line."

In this episode, we speak to inclusive PPE campaigner, Katy Robinson, and chairman of SHP's Editorial Board, Karl Simons, about raising awareness, changing attitudes and creating a movement for tangible change for inclusive PPE.

Katy Robinson is a senior project manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council and campaign manager for the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Yorkshire who is also spearheading an inclusive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) campaign targeting the Yorkshire construction sector.

Karl Simons, an engineer by trade, took his skill into the military before entering the safety profession working across sectors including facilities and utilities, picking up an OBE along the way – as well as SHP’s most influential award in 2020. He is now co-founder of FYLD, a tech start-up that utilises AI to keep field workers safe, and also chairman of our Editorial Board.

Both are supporters of SHP's Inclusive PPE campaign, and in this episode, Katy discusses the need to place more importance on PPE for women and men, highlighting that it's not just the end point of a risk assessment. She also mentions changing attitudes and creating a gold standard for best practice.

Then we hear from Karl, who discusses the process of creating a movement, the evolution of raising issues at work, whether physical or mental, and why change starts with the workforce to create a 'learning culture'.

SHP Editor Mark Glover speaks to the winner of last year’s SHP Rising Star Award, Jake Newell about what it felt like to achieve one of the sector’s most coveted accolades, and how his work as an asbestos analyst continues to motivate him.

This year, according to figures from the HSE, 5000 people in Britain are likely to die prematurely from asbestos exposure. For Jake Newell, these numbers serve as a daily motivation in his role as Asbestos Analyst at Acorn Analytical Services. “I could potentially be saving lives and preventing people from exposure to asbestos,” Jake tells the Safety Conversation Podcast. “I just want to make sure that work is carried out safely.”

Asbestos was used extensively as a UK building material in the fifties, sixties and seventies and is still in buildings today. However, those exposed to its fibres (most commonly by those in construction), will not develop symptoms until 10-40 years later. Its use wasn’t banned until 1999, a year later Jake was born. 23 years on he was recognised as SHP’s UK Rising Star for his work in combatting asbestos, an achievement he still finds hard to believe. “I was just over the moon,” he says. Just knowing that my company had seen my hard work and put me forward. It was just like a really good feeling.”

The irreversible impact: mental health and accidents at work

In this episode, we hear from two speakers from Proud2BSafe – an organisation of motivational speakers who share personal stories about the impact of workplace accidents.

In this podcast we hear from Sean Toon on mental health and why communication is key. And Matt Hazelton, who was a director at a construction firm when a tragic accident occurred resulting in him losing his two brothers and two good friends.

Initially Proud2BSafe solely focused on Jason Anker’s story but with the help of more motivational speakers sharing their stories, it aims to spread the word more broadly, change perspectives and help discuss the causes of people not speaking up at work.

At the end, I also have a quick chat with Neil Fisher, a client of Proud2BSafe who was shortlisted for SHP’s most influential person in health and safety last year, here, he briefly speaks about what it’s been like to work with the organisation.

Both Sean and Matt have highly motivational stories which aims to inspire and change people's attitudes towards health, safety and wellbeing for the better.

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a recognised condition when your breathing stops and starts while you sleep. It results in feeling very tired during the day, issues concentrating, mood swings and headaches. It can be very serious if left untreated. It’s estimated that better diagnosis and treatment could prevent up to 40,000 road accidents a year.

Air Products is an industrial gas delivery company with a large fleet of vehicles. One of its experienced drivers Kevin Bird was diagnosed with the condition and in this episode of the Safety and Health Podcast, he tells SHP Editor, Mark Glover, about his symptoms, the shock of being diagnosed with the condition and how it felt to potentially lose his licence and ultimately his livelihood. However, after eventually coming forward and speaking to the firm's Central Distribution Manager, John Davies, John and his team were able to implement a support plan to keep Kevin on the road.

Managing risk and MSD risk assessment at work

The keystone of risk management are the numerous assessments of individual tasks that provide a detailed understanding of where to prioritise risk reductions. Matt Birtles will also show the improved MSD risk assessment suite from HSE (including the MAC, RAPP and ART tools) that can now be completed online to provide practitioners with quicker assessments and better sharing of the outcomes so that they can spend more time focused on reducing risk.

The panel talked about the opportunities for increasing collaboration across teams, and changing the direction of safety in the workplace, through genuine staff engagement.

The session was moderated by Heather Beach, Managing Director of the Healthy Work Company. Heather was joined in the panel by Adam Clarke, Managing Director Consulting at Praxis42, Matt Hall, Interim Deputy Director Patient Safety and Risk at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and Carolyn Smith, Health, Safety and Well-being Director, The VPS Group.

Louis Theroux is a journalist, documentary-presenter, producer and writer. His unique style of investigation has looked into everything from celebrities to the US prison system, far-right groups to adult films. His simple yet direct style has revealed the personalities, lifestyles, loyalties and beliefs of those often misunderstood, written off or ignored.

In this interview, recorded at Safety & Health Expo on Thursday 19 May 2022, Louis sat down with SHP Editor Ian Hart.

Starting out in print journalism, Louis moved to television as a correspondent on TV Nation, examining the strange, dangerous and controversial elements of American life. Before joining the BBC to develop his Weird Weekends series, which often put him in dangerous and compromising positions.

Returning to the UK, Louis followed Weird Weekends with When Louis Met… in which he spent time with a range of unusual celebrities from Ann Widdicombe and Chris Eubank to Neil and Christine Hamilton.

In 2019 Louse set up Mindhouse an independent television production company, which aims to tackle thought-provoking and complex subjects using intelligence and humour.

Starting out in a career in health & safety

In this episode, we hear from two women at the start of their careers, speaking about their journey into health & safety and the challenges they have faced along the way. Cindy Bell, SHE Advisor at Greggs, discusses her varied role and her advice for starting out in a career in health & safety. Then, Shari Bowen, HSSE Officer at Massy Distribution, talks about working in health & safety in the Caribbean and the challenges of working in a male-dominated environment.

Following in the footsteps of Robert Jukes and Lucilla Cummings, Cindy Bell was named both SHP’s Rising Star in Manufacturing and Rising Star UK for 2021, for her work as SHE Advisor at Greggs.

Cindy won the judges over with her enthusiasm and commitment to improving working operations for employees. The panel was also captivated by her passion for integrating new technology into the workplace, taking the time to learn about ways to improve operations outside of her set working hours. In the episode, Cindy speaks about how she got into health & safety and provides advice for people wanting to start out on a career in the profession.

We then hear SHP’s International Rising Star for 2021, Shari Bowen, who HSSE Officer at Massy Distribution Ltd., one of the largest distribution companies in the Caribbean basin. Shari has been instrumental in developing and promoting safety and health.

During the chat, Shari speaks about how she got into the profession and her desire to engage with other women in the field, using social media to interact with other Caribbean women working in health and safety.

Dr Mavis Nye was voted as SHP’s Most Influential Individual for 2021 by SHP readers. In this episode, we chat to Mavis about her work as a campaigner for the dangers of asbestos exposure and the lack of awareness that still exists, and how living with Mesothelioma impacts her life.

Mavis has been described as a ‘tour de force, and an absolute dynamo for Asbestos Awareness’. She lives with Mesothelioma every day of her life, having been diagnosed a few years ago, and spends her life campaigning for asbestos awareness and removal.

We also hear from qualified sleep practitioner, Lisa Artis, Deputy CEO at the Sleep Charity. Lisa speaks about how important sleep is, when it comes to people’s health and wellbeing, how it’s often overlooked in the workplace and provides some top tips on how you can make some small and quick changes, to immediately improve your sleep. Lisa was named SHP’s Trailblazer in Workplace Wellbeing for 2021.

Ensuring a safe return to face-to-face events

Musculoskeletal disorders: Approaches to managing the associated risks

Louise Hosking and Jimmy Quinn on IOSH Presidency

In this episode, we are joined by both IOSH Immediate Past President, Jimmy Quinn and President, Louise Hosking, to discuss overcoming the challenges of the last 12 months and look ahead to what’s in store for 2022.

Louise Hosking was officially confirmed as IOSH’s new figurehead at its annual general meeting in November. She will serve in the role for 12 months, representing IOSH in webinars and events around the world. In this interview, Louise discusses her plans for her Presidency, including thoughts on equality, diversity and inclusion and how the role of the health & safety practitioner is changing.

We also look back on the past 12 months with Immediate Past President, Jimmy Quinn, who talks about how he had to adapt his plans in the light of COVID-19 and his on-going work around veterans and the armed forces and on mental health.

‘Work-related suicides should be monitored and regulated’

In this episode, we are joined Sarah Waters, Professor of French Studies at the University of Leeds, to look at a study, published by University of Leeds and Hazards Campaign, which calls on the HSE to monitor, regulate and ultimately prevent workplace suicides.

Professor Waters is a specialist on French labour and the French workplace. The report, Work-related suicide: a qualitative analysis of recent cases with recommendations for reform, investigated 12 suicide cases that occurred between 2015 and 2020 to discover whether they could be attributed to the workplace.

It stems from a Research England-funded study into a selection of suicide cases and found that employee suicides are still largely treated as an individual mental health problem that has no direct relevance to work or the workplace.

Prof Waters says: “The aim of the study was to look very closely at some of the work-related causal factors that might lead to suicide, and to look at some of the causal connections between suicide and work in the UK context.”

How do periods of economic growth affect workplace injuries?

In this episode, we are joined by Tanya Jenke, General Manager of Cority Australia, who has recently carried out a study, analysing over half a million occupational injuries in Western Australia between 2003-2019, to find whether economic growth following a period of recession has an impact on workplace injuries.

Tanya’s study, ‘An investigation of the influence of economic cycles on safety performance in Western Australia’, was carried out as part of her PhD.

The research looked at the impact of external factors on safety and performance. “Taking a look at the literature, I was able to see that there's been quite a lot of studies done on the impact of internal factors, such as corrective actions, accident investigation, leading and lagging indicators, but there wasn't a lot done on external factors,” Tanya said.

“So, I was able to obtain access to a WorkCover database for Western Australia. WorkCover is a governmental organisation that captures compensable occupational injuries. They had 20 years of data that had not been assessed in this manner before, so that came to over half a million data points across 20 years. Looking at that very large data set, while I was interested in how occupational injuries changed, what I was most interested in, was how they changed over time and what was causing them to change over time. That's when I started to look externally and focus on economic cycles.”

Fire safety: Making buildings safer

Alastair Campbell on workplace mental ill-health

Alastair Campbell is one of the UK’s foremost mental health campaigners, and an ambassador for several mental health charities, including Mind, the official charity partner of Workplace Wellbeing Show.

Alastair recently spoke openly to Safety & Health Expo and Workplace Wellbeing Show Event Manager, Charlotte Geoghagen about his struggles with depression. He provides some advice for employers and colleagues on how to support people suffering with mental ill-health, his thoughts on some of the common stigmas around mental health and why they exist and some words of advice on how he looks after his depression.

In the second part of the episode, we hand over to Heather Beach from the Healthy Work Company, for an interview with Vicki Simmonds, based on recent personal experience with burnout.

Two months into a new job, the pandemic hit, and Vicki’s life took a turn for the worst. Locked down alone, far from her support network of friends & family. Around the same time, shelost a close friend to COVID and two ex-colleagues who died by suicide. Vicki continued to work at full capacity, but it became too much.

The Rising Stars of health & Safety

Hear from Thomas Dunning, a Mechanical engineer at British Sugar, who is perhaps better known as the Mental Health Runner, an award-winning TED speaker, who shares his mental health journey explicitly to show the world that it really is “okay to not be okay”. Thomas was recently named SHP’s Trailblazer in Positive Social Impact, with judges highlighting that how Thomas has turned the negative of his own mental ill health struggles into a positive and opened the subject up to a much wider audience.

Then, we speak to Lucilla Cummings, HSE Improvement Specialist at Travis Perkins, who was named the winner of the SHP Award for Rising Star UK, an award which recognises young health & safety professionals, across all sectors, going above and beyond to improve occupational health, safety and/or workplace wellbeing in the UK. Judges noted how Lucilla has made “rapid progression” through the business.

Next up, it’s PepsiCo EHS Specialist, Sam Watts, who was been named as SHP’s Rising Star in Manufacturing. Sam ‘fell’ into safety six years ago after starting a EHS temporary admin role whilst waiting to join the police force, but quickly realised her passion for all things health and safety. It was Sam’s response to COVID-19 that really stood out to the judging panel, as she helped implement additional controls to ensure the safety of not only staff, but also their families.

Last, but not least, Finally, it’s the turn of BAM Construction Training Managing Director, Matthew Durant, who was named SHP’s Rising Star in Construction. Matthew started BAM Construction Training in 2013, with the intention to make engaging and interactive courses which put learners first. His dedication to partnering with other construction companies to provide young people with work and educational opportunities within the industry was noted by the judges, who noted that he had a “clear emphasis on trying to help the wider industry”.

Hilda has over 30 years’ experience in health & safety and works for Greater Manchester Hazard Centre. In December SHP readers recognised her work as a campaigner, supporting families who find themselves on the wrong side of health and safety failure. Hilda shares her views on the health & safety system in the UK, the importance of protecting workers as they return to the office and talks about her work with Families Against Corporate Killers (FACK).

Finally, we take a look at the role of smart PPE in protecting lone workers with some clips from a recent roundtable, hosted by SHP. Lone and at-risk workers represent a large proportion of the UK’s workforce – a trend that has been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic as social distancing measures have been introduced, shift patterns have changed and an increased number of people work in isolation. The clips look at how businesses have had to adapt through lockdown restrictions, the challenges organisations have when it comes to keeping staff safe beyond their shift, the importance of embedding smart PPE into the culture of an organisation and the role of technology in health & Safety in the future.

Work-related stress and the wellbeing of frontline workers

Hear from Senior Psychologist for the Health and Safety Executive, Peter Kelly about work-related stress, and then Inspector Phil Spencer, Blue Light Programme Co-ordinator at Cleveland Police, discusses the stress of working on the frontline during the pandemic.

Peter Kelly is primarily responsible with providing HSE and the government with advice on work-related stress, mental health and wellbeing. During the interview, we spoke about the additional challenge the coronavirus pandemic has had on employee stress and we also touch on the upcoming ISO45003 Standard.

Phil Spencer is Cleveland Police’s Blue Light Programme Coordinator & Wellbeing Inspector. He was named as the winner of the SHP Award for Trailblazer in Workplace Wellbeing Award at the back end of 2020, with judges highlighting his desire to support all things workplace wellbeing.

Phil has been a key component in driving forward the workplace wellbeing agenda and changing the way mental health is thought about in policing. He has transformed how Cleveland Police supports its staff in better understanding mental health, and how to cope better with the trauma and difficulties of the working environment, especially during the pandemic.

Phil also touches on how the police is perceived by the public and the effect that has on officers, and the difficulties with policing the internet in a social media age.

IOSH President Andrew Sharman and how What3Words protects lone workers

SHP’s Most Influential Person in health & safety
