I'm your host, Mikie Krisztal. This podcast is a place where we talk to people about how to get by in this complicated world. Everything is changing all the time. Sometimes it can feel like there's no right moves, if you're anything like me. Yet for some, it seems effortless. On this podcast, we'll explore people's realities and hopefully walk away with something learned or a fresh perspective. Worst case, maybe it'll be a little fun. We talk to people who've succeeded, messed up, learned, and created cool things as result. People who were innovators in their industries. Artists, craftsmen, high-powered corporate CEOs, and regular working people doing their best to make the world a better place. Or at least find and share some truth in it. We all have experiences to bring to the table.

What is The School of Imperfection, you might be asking? Well, it's a 20-year journey of me trying to do creative stuff, failing, selling out, building brands. Having existential crises and eventually realizing that perfectionism was the real villain that I didn't defeat along the way. And at some point I said screw it and I picked up a paintbrush and I started making imperfect art which is an art form that I've been evolving that just allows the freedom of layers and incorporating mistakes to create a kind of messy but beautiful, hopefully, piece of art.

It turns out that people kinda liked it, and I liked not pretending to be perfect. So I started hosting in-person meetups to talk about perfectionism and unpack that through fun little imperfect painting experiences, as well as other collaborative imperfect experiences. But above all else, the School of Imperfection is an invitation to try something new, to find the courage to put yourself out there, even if you don't feel ready.

If you'd like to learn more about the school, collaborate on in-person experience, or get involved in some other way, reach out through theschoolofimperfection.com.

Our goal is to create a safe space to be weird, imperfect, and human in a place where there doesn't seem to be a lot of public spaces left to do that. Here we're figuring out how we learn, listen, laugh, and create as we all navigate and analyze the human experience together.

So if this sounds like something you might be into, then you are definitely in the right place. I invite you to join me in these explorations, conversations with creators, thinkers, and everyday people who are daring to imagine new ways of living, learning, and being. In this episode, Mikie Krisztal sits down with Felena Hanson, founder of Hera Hub, to explore the unglamorous reality behind entrepreneurship. From being laid off three times before age 30 to creating a coworking and business-support network that has served more than 14,000 entrepreneurs, Felena shares how loneliness while working from home inspired Hera Hub, why meaningful in-person community cannot be replaced by social media followers, and the moment she realized she had built something capable of thriving without her at the center.

Felena also gets candid about the difference between launching an exciting idea and sustaining it for 15 years. She discusses learning to embrace operations, systems, financial details, and the constant reinvention required to survive challenges like COVID-19. The conversation also explores Hera Hub’s female-focused, gender-inclusive mission, its public benefit corporation model, the importance of accessible small-business resources, and how Felena eventually realized that creativity is not limited to traditional art. It can also mean designing a space where people immediately feel drawn to.

Key Takeaways

Starting a business and sustaining one require different skills. Branding, ideas, and possibility may make launching exciting, but longevity depends on systems, operations, finance, legal work, adaptability, and consistently solving new problems.

Entrepreneurs should not build in isolation. Felena credits community with helping grow her original marketing business and encourages founders to intentionally seek peers, mentors, and people who understand what they are building.

A scalable organization must become bigger than its founder. Felena knew from the beginning that she did not want Hera Hub to depend entirely on her.
