Five Theatre Girls: How Five "Normal" Women Took to the National Theatre's Largest Stage

The Five Theatre Girls: five women from Doncaster, who were never professional actors but just performed on one of Great Britain's most revered stages.

Sandra, Christine, Ruth, Sharon and Sally were part of The Odyssey: The Underworld at the National Theatre of Great Britain, the culmination of a project that has brought amazing change to all of their lives after 35.

The Odyssey was the National Theatre's nationwide multi-venue production to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Public Acts, a national program to create extraordinary acts of theatre and community. I read about this project and saw that some second chapter women's stories that were emerging out of the project. I needed to hear more about their stories and I'd love to share them with you!

it is so lovely to be back with you this week. I've been feeling really sad about the irregularity of my episode releases, but I've been completely snowed under with my master's degree work. I definitely need to have my own episode soon.

Coming Down to Earth with Novelist and Mother Who Makes, Matilda Leyser

Matilda Leyser is the author of No Season but the Summer, a novel that combines the Greek Persephone myth with modern day England, climate change, and, ultimately, a story about mother-daughter relationships.

But being a novelist is just one of her second chapter stories, after running away from words to join the circus (amongst other things!)

Matilda is a theatre-maker, writer and artistic director of Mothers Who Make. Prior to becoming a mother she worked for 10 years as a circus aerialist, collaborating with diverse theatre and dance companies and making her own work. She came down to earth in 2008 and became an Associate Director with Improbable. She became a mother in 2012 and considers motherhood, and her writing, to be far more dangerous endeavours than being a circus aerialist.

A Comical Second Helping, Ex-Nun Kelli Dunham

Kelli Dunham is a standup comic, a registered nurse, an author, a storyteller, and... wait for it... an ex nun. Kelli's website says, "I don't know how all of this came together on a resume", but I've done my best to find out, though there is so much beyond what we got to speak about*!

Having lost two partners between the ages of 38 and 43, Kelli is an expert on the intersections of art, grief and community- based caregiving, and presents across the US to healthcare providers about LGBT issues, LGBT health, and gender and health, using humour and the transformative power of first- person storytelling.

Miriam found a way to combine two of her greatest loves, running and pizza, in a way she never expected. It led to a totally new life of pizza tours, pizza paying it forward and pizza making, getting her through a bad break-up and the pandemic and leading to articles in the New York Times and appearances on Kelly Clarkson and Chopped (to name a few).

Miriam is an old friend whose story I’ve followed since my Brooklyn days, having known her through our triathlon club. Her change after 35 involves love, loss, giving back and a LOT of pizza.

It took moving to France, the birth of her second son and an online cooking class lightbulb moment for Judith to start her new company, My Food in France. Kyra Coates was born with a creative force inside of her.

Kyra’s early story led to an early adulthood filled with shame and denial. Realization, empowerment, and freedom led Kyra to realise that she is more than her trauma and to embrace her feminine power and sexuality.

After a profound spiritual awakening in her early twenties, Kyra became a Hindu nun and lived a disciplined monastic life for three years. When she left her robes behind, she dove into sexual awakening, motherhood, and embracing her feminine strength.

Finding her true calling at 35, Kyra returned to the art world professionally in 2014 and expresses her years of spiritual and psychological study through her art and now, her writing.

Now, Rebecca finds herself in a very different situation- fate or not- as a writer, a wife in an unexpected second marriage, a mother and a business owner (amongst other things!) She's also helping other writers find their own writing voice through her fabulous company, Ridley Writes.

In this episode, Kristin talks with A'Lelia Bundles. A'Lelia is the great-great-granddaughter of African-American entrepreneur, Madam CJ Walker, whose story was the inspiration for the Netflix series, Self-Made (originally published as On Her Own Ground). A'Lelia's great-grandmother, A'Lelia Walker, was an icon of the Harlem Renaissance.

But A'Lelia Bundles has spent her life finding her own ground, as an Emmy award-winning network TV news producer and journalist, an author and activist. A'Lelia has written several books about her fascinating family and keeps their legacy alive as founder of the Madam Walker Family Archives and brand historian for MCJW, a line of hair care products inspired by Madam Walker.

A Potted History- Debbie Page, Ceramist

Debbie Page is a studio potter, based in South Oxfordshire.

She was introduced to the joy of working with clay at school but it took another 20 years before she had the opportunity to really get to grips with the whole world of pottery. She developed an obsession with making teapots, fell in love with Jomon pottery, and spent a lot of time and effort learning to throw on the wheel only to discover, once she’d cracked it, that she prefers hand-building. Completely by chance, she found the pottery love of her life – the Korean Moon Jar, from someone who never made one.

Through her organisation Political Theology Matters, Marcia gives voice to social issues that impact the lives of ordinary people. Her aim is to participate as one of many different voices of faith who work for a more just society.

Starting out as a make-up artist, Lora now explores the "middle space" between ingénue and retiree on her new album, Domystique- what happens between youth and old age and what comes with it.

Lora also has a lot to say around what it means to her to be a woman - to own your right to deciding your prime, claiming independence and being a mother.
