And these standards are made by standards-makers – tens of thousands of people from around the world - who get together to agree good practice to the way things are made and done. All helping to make life easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

In this episode, Matthew speaks with Adam Mason, a Medical Device Testing Engineer at Element Materials Technology, a global testing, inspection, and certification company that helps ensure products meet safety and quality standards.

In 2025 he represented the UK, BSI and its partners on the IEC Young Professionals Programme – the prestigious professional development initiative that brings together the next generation of expert engineers, technicians, and managers from around the globe.

Adam shares his motivations for getting involved in standards, the impact standards-making is having on his career, and his advice to anyone considering getting involved in standards.

Personal protective equipment, or PPE, has faced challenges in fitting a diverse workforce – research shows that 36% of women in the UK and 45% of women globally are supplied PPE that doesn’t fit properly.

Poorly fitting PPE isn’t just uncomfortable – in sectors like construction, healthcare, and policing, it can create serious safety risks, reduce job satisfaction, and even drive skilled workers from industries already experiencing labour shortages.

BS 30417, the new standard for inclusive PPE, provides practical guidance to ensure all employees are properly protected, regardless of gender, ethnicity, body shape, age, or disability.

In this episode, we hear from key voices at the Westminster launch of BS 30417, including MPs, industry leaders, and the standards-makers themselves, discussing how the standard enhances safety, inclusivity, and workforce well-being. Suicide affects every part of society, with around 6,000 deaths in the UK each year and one in four adults having contemplated it, leaving hundreds impacted by each loss. BS 30480 addresses this by providing the UK’s first workplace standard on suicide prevention, offering practical guidance to help organizations recognize risk, respond safely, and create supportive, stigma-free environments.

In this episode, Matthew speaks to Jamie Compton Rea, Chief Operating Officer at the National Centre for Suicide Prevention Education and Training (NCSPET) and standards-maker involved in the development of BS 30480. This episode is an audio-abridged version of the BSI Report - Supporting a safe and secure digital world for adolescents.

Published in May 2025, the report reveals that nearly half (47%) of young people aged 16 to 21 would prefer to grow up without the internet - a stark reflection of concerns about its impact on their wellbeing. Drawing on a survey of 1,293 UK adolescents, it shows that time spent online has increased since COVID-19, with many spending hours each day on social media and gaming. Despite this, 42% admit to hiding their online activity from parents, and risky behaviours, such as creating fake profiles are common. The findings highlight the urgent need for stronger privacy and safety measures by tech companies and policymakers to protect young users’ mental health and online safety.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal countries. It is home to 2.7 billion people and includes both advanced economies and developing countries. 33 of its members are small states, including many island nations. It’s member governments agree to shared goals like democracy, trade and development.

The Commonwealth Standards Network (CSN) was established in 2018 to promote the use of standards to boost trade and development in low and middle-income Commonwealth countries. The UK Government helps fund CSN activities via its International Development budget and the programme delivery is managed by BSI.

The CSN collaborates with National Standards Bodies (NSBs) - from throughout the Commonwealth – helping to improve the services they offer to their stakeholders to enhance the effective use of standards, leading to economic, sustainability and society benefit.

As nations work toward climate goals and economic growth, carbon management has emerged as a crucial tool for achieving a net-zero economy while enhancing cost efficiency. The BSI Inclusive Service Kitemark combines the best practice from the international standard ISO 22458 for consumer vulnerability and the requirements of some of the UK’s leading regulatory bodies. It was created to help consumers have confidence in services when they need them most and to allow organizations to demonstrate their best inclusive service practices.

In this series, Matthew speaks to organizations who have been certified to the Inclusive Service Kitemark. They describe the operational improvements they made to achieve the Kitemark. What achieving the Kitemark means in terms of delivering positive outcomes for consumers. And the advice they would give to other organizations wanting to start their own journeys to achieve this Kitemark.

This episode of the series features Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN). They are the electricity Distribution Network Operator (DNO) responsible for delivering power to over 3.8 million homes and businesses across central southern England and the north of Scotland. Matthew speaks to Louise Jones, SSEN’s Social Obligations Manager and Emma Merritt, Lead Customer Relationship Manager, about why the Inclusive Service Kitemark is so important to them.

This special episode of the podcast is an in-depth conversation with Corinne Quin, lecturer in design at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Matthew speaks to her about sizegiver - an art and design project which explores the use of standards in an unusual and interesting way.

A sizegiver is an object placed into a photograph to enable judgement of another object’s size or scale. They are mass-produced, designed and standardized objects, which are iconic and familiar, but also commonplace.

Examples of sizegivers include coins, bottle caps, paperclips, matchsticks, coke cans, or golf balls. They create object-object relationships, which communicate scale faster than a ruler, but are are often strange, playful and unusual.

Corinne explains how sizegiving is becoming an international visual shorthand to describe the meaning of images, tell stories and bring together communities.
