Herbert D. Richards served 20 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Technical Seargent from 1958-1977. Born in Jacksonville, IL and raised in East Alton, IL, he grew up in a poor, but hard working family. His father went from job to job and they moved around Illinois often, but finally settled in East Alton. At 16 years of age, he quit school to get a job and help his father make ends meet. When he enlisted into the US Air Force, he was able to earn his GED. He spent his whole career around every Air Force Base there ever was, served two combat tours in Vietnam and flew around the world twice. I wasn’t shot. I was able to diffuse the situation with my words and smile and then ten minutes later the gentleman came back out with his credit card”-Jason McNamara. I have been a volunteer my whole life, so much so I am writing a book: Stories of a volunteeraholic. I began volunteering in the JBLM community on and off post more than 15 years ago. I am a US Army and Navy Reserve veteran, military spouse, and Life member of AUSA, VFW, and as a member Wear Blue Run to Remember. I have had the opportunity to be a part of projects and programs that span the country. Because of the amount of volunteering and work put in especially in AUSA, I have also been given the opportunity to travel to different states and speak about; best practices, building relationships, communication, and garnering new ideas.

In support of the JBLM community, I have made myself available to help units find support and coordination for things such as; unit balls, organizational days, holiday parties and building relationships. The relationships between soldiers, our community, and the businesses that surround us have the ability to make great impacts. Santa suits and Easter bunnies seem trivial, but they are the building blocks to our family’s ability to be resilient during stressful times.

I am currently the Washington State President for the Association of the United States Army (AUSA). Our state raises over $150,000.00 yearly in support of all the programs and events that build moral, family readiness, aide against suicide, build professionalism and educate our community on military needs. I am new on staff for the Travis Manion Fdn.-TMF, however I have been a volunteer with TMF for over 2 years. Because of my new role I have started to build relationships with local members of TMC- The Mission Continues and MVP-Merging Vets and Players. I am also a new podcast co-host of Helping the Brave, which lets veterans across the country share their stories of transition from the military, overcoming challenges, as well as share recourses and insights so we can work on building better networks.

I completed my Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and Management through Western Governors University. My undergraduate is a Bachelor of Science in Business & Management and is also through WGU. As an avid learner I continue to take courses whenever I can, I hope to complete a doctoral program at some point.

As a past President of the Air Force Association on McChord field I was a part of creating the first Airmen Appreciation Day, and building better relationships with each unit on McChord, camp Murray and the Airmen attached to the Lewis side of JBLM. Through AFA we provided awards and scholarships to JrROTC, spouses and airmen. I was invited to speak at the 62nd airwing’s wingman day as AFA president. I spoke about being present for each other both in the military and in the community, the event had just over 4,000 in attendance.

As Past Honorary Commander of Commander, 62d Comptroller Squadron, I have had the opportunity to continue supporting Airmen in a direct way; through promotions, holiday events, and unit activities.

As a part of the Navy League of Tacoma executive council for 2 years I was supporting Navy, Marines, and Coastguardsmen in our area, with awards and monetary support.

I have enjoyed volunteering at the USO Northwest Shilo center on McChord where my team served hundreds of sandwiches and hot dogs. I volunteered during deployments and welcome homes, as well as helped coordinated deserts for the annual USO Gala.

"I grew up in small town America. Growing up in Central Illinois was not a particularly exciting place to live. Everywhere you look is a corn field. However boring that sounds I had a mostly normal childhood with the exception of loosing my father to cancer at sixteen. Loosing a parent is tough and at the time I had no idea how much that would affect me personally and professionally in the future.

Military service never really seemed like a thing I would actually do until I got my associates degree. It was early 2006, and with no plans of working on a bachelors, I decided to enlist in the Air Force. I ended up as Security Forces and during the time I served I had an amazing opportunity to live and work in places like Japan, Ecuador and Iraq. My Air Force time allows me to deploy twice to Iraq, once to Ecuador, and attend amazing courses like Airman Leadership School, Combat Leadership Course, Security Forces Seven Level School, Illinois State Motor Vehicle theft inspector course, and more.

Transition out was sometimes tough but I made it through much easier than many of my brothers and sisters. Over the years since I have made helping fellow veterans one of my passions in life. It started by helping veterans buy and sell homes, and helping send vets to Washington DC with our local honor flight hub, and has transformed into this podcast.

Over the past few years I have read the issues, problems, questions posed by my brothers and sisters in arms through various social groups. One things is common, we all need help with something. That could be PTSD, financial education, buying a home with a VA loan, help getting a service dog or just someone to listen. This need for information has brought me to the idea of a podcast discussing these various topics and more, to help shine a light and be the battle buddy you need!

Outside of my efforts for the veteran community I am a licensed Realtor and real estate continuing education instructor in Peoria, IL. My passions in real estate include helping veterans learn about and use their VA home loan, as well as promoting education and professional standards throughout the industry."

"In dealing with the VA in two separate instances (both personally in beginning this process that took over a year when we began, and in helping our son, who is a wounded warrior suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury), we have seen how overwhelmed and understaffed the VA truly is. Soldiers are lost as they wait for the help they desperately need.

Having served this country for 26 years as a Soldier and Combat Medic, I lost more of my Brothers and Sisters to suicide when we got home than I did during our time deployed in combat.I wanted to bring awareness to Veteran Suicide, which led me to start Project Diehard.

Project Diehard started as a tribute motorcycle for the Brothers I lost who I served with. I’d go out to my shop and work on the bike. This work is a source of PTSD therapy for me. After long hours of prayers, on April 22, 2018 ProjectDiehard, a Non-profit Limited Liability Company, was formed.

The goal is simple, “To bring public awareness to veteran suicide and to assist veterans in coping with the stress and difficulties in transitioning from active-duty military to civilian life.” Help them rise.

One lost Veteran is to many. We have no way of getting an accurate number if the stigma attached to suicide exists. What leads to suicide? I wish we knew because if it had not been for the support of my wife, my church, and my friends, I would just be a number today.

This knowledge is what led to the concept Project Diehard. our facilities will be a place where a Veteran can come and stay for a day, a week, a month, or even up to a year. With food and shelter provided, whether they come to hang out and talk among other Veterans or they need assistance working thru the VA system, these Veterans will be welcomed and accommodated at no cost to them.

Our goal is to have 90% of funds raised go to helping a veteran. At no time will a board member or volunteer take a paycheck from ProjectDiehard. Together we can make a difference."

Brian Conwell was born in Greenville South Carolina in 1980. Growing up Brian was big into the military and sports. Brian excelled in both winning championships and getting medals of leadership from the governor.

In 2006 Brian left for basic training at Ft Knox Kentucky and ait at Aberdeen Proving Grounds Maryland. Brian completed a year of reserve time before going active duty Jan 1 2008. Brian deployed with the 57 signal company to Iraq for a year. Continued his service to Ft. Lee va and then Ft. Riley Ks. It was there on Jan 7 th 2014 Brian lost his left leg above the knee and his right leg out back together with 30 screws 4 plates and a 10 in rod. Brian still can’t fill his right foot either. Brian was sent to Ft. Sam Houston to recover at the CFI.

After being medically retired Brian was 400 lbs and doctor said he would never walk again. October 2020 Brian finally started walking on his own! December 2020 Brian got back in the gym and taking his life back in fitness. Now Brian I’d a professional para athlete and holds his Paralympic license and has been competing for the last year.

He has won a silver and bronze medal at the National Wheelchair Games 2021 NYC . ARMY TRIALS 2022 win his sport on Team Army for the DOD Warrior games 2022, Won gold in men’s discus at the Desert Challenge 2022 in AZ. Brian also competed in the National Veteran Wheelchair Games Tempe AZ July 2022 where he took hole Gold in power lifting and

daptive fitness, sliver in Discus and bronze in shot put and javlin. Brian is currently in training for the DOD Warrior games 2022 at the ESPN complex in Orlando FL as a part of Team Army!
