Much like becoming aware of possible adhd traits we seem to get sucked into stories and advice about how good a pet can be, especially when our children are struggling with socialisation and accessing the community - calming, sensory, connection, confidence boosting, anxiety reducing, speech improving, the lot. And of course, as parents, we put aside all our current coping and sleep deprivation woes and decide we absolutely should and must try this, it could be a game changer. He is learning to point to letters of the alphabet on stencils to answer questions from age appropriate lessons and I am learning to become his co-regulation partner (CRP) on the stencils/boards. It is a long journey that takes an enormous amount of commitment. It is fraught with inconsistencies and frustrations, takes many people to be invested in it, heaps of belief and the determination to never give up. But what could be more important right? It will eventually lead to Henry being able to spell out his own thoughts and ideas giving him not only access to communication at last but agency and autonomy too.
