The Independent Remuneration Panel has proposed an uplift in salaries for MLAs from £53,000 to £67,200 per year – a rise of 26.8%, from April 1.

A son of the convicted double murderer Colin Howell has spoken to UTV, describing how his life fell apart when he found out that his father had killed his mother Lesley, and his then lover Hazel Stewart’s husband, Trevor Buchanan - and that he had staged it to look like a suicide pact.

The truth was only revealed... almost 20 years later - after Colin Howell’s confession in 2009, implicating Hazel Stewart. She was also found guilty of the murders.

Monday began with a dispute over flags.

A former PSNI detective has urged people to make themselves aware of the signs of coercive control as it could save lives.

James Brannigan worked on the Katie Simpson murder investigation. The young showjumper's death was initially treated as a suicide before concerns were raised and a murder investigation was launched.

Working with members of her family, he established The Katie Trust. It helps families who have unanswered questions or concerns after the death of a loved one is classified as a suicide, accident or disappearance.

A Northern Ireland judge has told UTV, violence against women and young girls here is chronic and admitted that the amount of violent domestic abuse crimes he deals with in court is depressing.

First Minister Michelle O'Neill called for tougher sentences for those convicted of violence against women. Judge Stephen Keown is confident that new laws protecting victims and changes in how domestic abuse cases are handled are making a difference.

Martin Donnelly was on the cusp of a promising racing career in F1 when he was involved in a devastating crash...

His Lotus suffered mechanical failure causing him to crash at the Spanish Grand Prix in 1990. He was travelling at a speed of around 160mph. His stricken body, lying still strapped to his seat is one of the sport's most harrowing, and enduring images highlighting the dangers of the sport.

Fast forward almost 30 years and a phone call on an April Saturday night from seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, brought back memories of that crash for Martin and started him on a path to Hollywood and a match up with silver screen legend Brad Pitt.

How a cancer screening scandal is costing lives

Every year thousands of women attend routine smear tests as part of a programme to help prevent cervical cancer.

But we can reveal for more than a decade multiple screeners at one health trust were falling way short of recognised standards, failings which we find were not addressed either by their employers or watchdogs for years.

While the results of a large-scale review into issues at the Southern Trust are still to be announced, our evidence suggests the problems could be more far reaching.

Our investigation began after we revealed one shocking case where a woman was given the all clear three times. She later died with cancer - with doctors believing had it been caught earlier the outcome may have been different.

The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information has revealed that it's received 85 enquiries since it became operational in May.

The truth recovery organisation was established as part of the previous government's controversial legacy act. The ICRIR chief commissioner, the former Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan, talks to our Political Editor Tracey Magee about the work of the organisation, how it will investigate cases and its work to build trust with those looking to its services.

UTV has uncovered footage dating back from 1976 of a 10-year-old boy being treated for haemophilia with Factor 8. That boy was Paul Kirkpatrick who is now in his fifties. He has lived much of his life with Hepatitis C after being given contaminated blood.

The Infected Blood Inquiry found a catalogue of failings and that the treatment disaster could have and should have been avoided.

Our reporter Peter Moor sat down with Paul to watch UTV's footage for the first time since it was broadcast - something he has described as deeply disturbing.

A Covid apology

Those are the words of former Sinn Féin minister Caral Caral Ni Chuilin about her decision to attend the funeral of high-profile republican Bobby Storey, at the height of the Covid pandemic.

She is the first Sinn Féin politician to face questions at the UK Covid-19 inquiry about the decision to attend the funeral in west Belfast in July 2020.

Earlier the inquiry heard that the presence of republican ministers at the event was severely damaging to relations in the Executive.

There was a “discernible chill” between Northern Ireland’s First Minister Arlene Foster and deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill following the funeral of IRA veteran Bobby Storey, the Covid-19 Inquiry has heard.
Ms O’Neill attended the large-scale funeral in west Belfast for Mr Storey in June 2020 despite lockdown restrictions on public gatherings.
The then head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, Sir David Sterling, said her attendance affected relations at the Stormont Executive.

The UK's Covid inquiry came to Belfast and day one heard explosive claims of political in-fighting, lost material and disarray within the Northern Ireland Executive as ministers tried to deal with the pandemic.

More than 4,000 people in the region died with the virus across 2020 and 2021.
The inquiry heard how decision making came down party-political lines.

"They should hang their heads in shame," those were the words of the Chief Medical Officer Sir Michael McBride to the chief scientific adviser about senior politicians.

One of the issues that will be examined is why phones, with crucial communications from ministers - were wiped.

Another element the inquiry will consider is if there was an underestimation of speed and scale of what was unfolding at the pandemic's outbreak.

Woman suffering advanced stage cervical cancer had test results misread over a decade

Erin Harbinson has advanced-stage cervical cancer. But for her and her health, it could have been very different.

She had not one, not two, but three smear tests misread over the course of a decade - all had 'normal' results, or so she believed.

The mother of four was diagnosed in 2021, but was only told those vital health checks were incorrect just ahead of the announcement of a review into 17,500 women’s smears in the Southern Trust just six months ago.

Doctors have told her had her cancer been caught sooner, she would not be in the position she is in today.

Others are in the same position while some have already sadly passed away.

The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has apologised for failures in Erin's care. It said her case helped lead the establishment of reviews and urged anyone with concerns to get in touch.

It added: "For any woman who has unfortunately received a diagnosis of cervical cancer, we review all aspects of their previous smear tests as part of the audit of invasive cervical cancers to identify any learning that will help improve the screening programme.

"The Trust is working towards completing the Cervical Screening Review in the next few months. It is important to emphasise the fact that cervical screening is not a diagnostic test (rather it is for people without symptoms and aims to detect early changes which could go on to develop into cervical cancer if left untreated). Anyone with symptoms should always seek advice from their GP.

"The Southern Trust and Public Health Agency continue to urge women to continue come forward for their smear tests when invited. Almost all cervical cancers (99.7%) are caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of HPV.

"The Northern Ireland Cervical Screening Programme introduced full primary HPV testing into the cervical screening pathway in December 2023.

"The full integration of HPV testing has brought N.Ireland in line with similar programmes in the rest of the UK and Republic of Ireland, making the screening more accurate and more effective at identifying those at greatest risk.

"The screening test, often known as a ‘smear test’, checks a sample of cells from your cervix for certain types of HPV. If high-risk HPV is detected during screening, the sample will also be checked for abnormal cell changes.

"The HPV test is a better indicator than cytology of identifying which women are at risk of developing cervical cancer. The Cervical Screening Review is looking back at the old model. HPV is a common virus, and, in most cases, it will be cleared by the body’s immune system and have no adverse health impact. It is only when the virus persists, that it can cause cell changes in the cervix which, with time, can develop into cancer.

"We also urge anybody with concerns to contact our dedicated Helpline for this Cervical Review which is open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm on 0800 9520255.

"Alternatively, you can email cervical.review@southerntrust. hscni.net or visit the Southern Trust Website at www.southerntrust.hscni.net following the link to the Cervical Screening Review Information Page."

A new Taoiseach

Simon Harris has been elected Taoiseach by the Irish Parliament. He was officially installed in the role in a ceremony with the Irish President Michael D Higgins on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Harris takes over from Leo Varadkar who stood down from the role on Monday night.

The 37-year-old becomes the youngest ever Taoiseach. He told the Dail, it was special for him and said he looked forward to working with the Northern Ireland Executive.

It was a week of political earthquakes, money for education and some relief for those residents of a stricken apartment block.
Those were just a sample of the stories making the news in Northern Ireland this week, discussed by Carol Jordan and Jordan Moates in this week's UTV Podcast.
The Executive released funding for the Strule shared education campus this week - with the First Minister describing it as "world leading".
Jordan Moates has been reporting on the matter for years - and was at it when it was an Army barracks. He discusses the minefield it has become with costs spiralling and the composition of the campus which is to host 4,000 pupils, when it is built.
In the Republic, Leo Varadkar's sudden resignation as Fine Gael leader and taoiseach caused ripples across the world. He has said there is "no scandal" behind his sudden departure.
Simon Harris looks set to be crowned his replacement - and with it become Ireland's youngest taoiseach.
It was also a week where pressure grew on the Stormont administration to get help and support to the Victoria Square apartments residents. Rates bills have been paused, as too has legal action against those who have not been paying rates. The residents were forced from their homes in 2019 after serious defects were found in the build.
And for this week's View From Stormont, Jordan looked at the debate around assisted dying legislation. This came after the broadcaster Esther Rantzen launched a campaign for new laws and in the Republic a special oireachtas joint committee called for the introduction of legislation.
And looking ahead, Northern Ireland's MLAs head off on their Easter break, Carol and Jordan look at what they have achieved in their first few short weeks and the challenges their are facing.

The 'fables and fairytales' of Stakeknife

More lives were probably lost than saved through the Army’s operation of its top agent inside the IRA’s internal security unit during the Troubles, a major independent investigation has found.

The interim findings of Operation Kenova examined 101 murders and abductions linked to the Provisional IRA’s so-called “nutting squad” responsible for interrogating, torturing and murdering people suspected of passing information to the security forces during the conflict.

Operation Kenova, which was undertaken by Bedfordshire Police and ran for seven years at a cost of approximately £40 million, examined the role of the Army’s prized agent embedded in the heart of the IRA’s Internal Security Unit (ISU), an individual known as Stakeknife.

The agent Stakeknife was widely believed to be west Belfast man Freddie Scappaticci, who was 77 when he died last year.

Delivering his report Jon Boutcher said the lives saved by the double agents activities were in the single figures. He said the intelligence services' believe Stakeknife was the "golden goose" was the thing of "fables and fairytales".

The Infected Blood Inquiry examing the scandal has announced it will publish its much delayed findings next May. But victims continue to die, including the Chair of Haemophilia Northern Ireland Simon Hamilton.

The Post Office scandal: NI man regrets guilty plea

A former sub post master says he regrets admitting to fraud after the Post Office's faulty computer system wrongly reported shortfalls of seventeen thousand pounds in his branch accounts.

Lee Williamson is one of more than 700 people handed criminal convictions after Fujitsu’s faulty Horizon software made it appear as though money was missing from their branches - a scandal which hit a nerve with the public after the ITV drama Mr Bates versus the Post Office.

Lee is still trying to have his conviction overturned through the court of appeal - but he has been told it could all be sorted, through new legislation intended to exonerate those caught up in the Horizon scandal. Sarah Mckinley spoke to Lee about the toll the ordeal has taken on him.

The storied history of Havelock House

Demolition work has begun on the former home of UTV 'Havelock House'. The 150-year-old building was first created as a linen factory in the late 1800s, before housing soldiers during WW2 and even a secret radar operation.
Resident groups and historians have campaigned to maintain the site, or at least to save the Victorian part of the building.
However, work is now underway by developers to demolish Havelock to make way for over 100 new social homes in south Belfast.

Rugby legend talks winning the World Cup

The call comes as the broadcaster revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer just days after Christmas last year.Speaking to friend and colleague Ali Fleming about her experience, Pamela spoke about the treatment she went through, losing her hair, and paid tribute to the medical team who looked after her.

Following months of chemotherapy, she’s had surgery and is doing well. But, Pamela says her outcome could have been very different if she hadn’t attended that routine appointment in November last year.

Winnie M Li was visiting Belfast in 2008 when she was attacked by a stranger. Her attacker was recently jailed again for assaulting and robbing a 92 year old woman.

With reports of sexual assaults at an all-time high, she has called on the criminal justice system to do more to support victims, and to stop repeat offenders.

She spoke to UTV reporter and presenter Sarah Clarke about her experiences as her new book is released in paperback.
