Final Episode/"Gethsemane"/March Madness Monster Mash

Good morning X-Files faithful!

During the live recording I officially announced that “Gethsemane” would be LSG’s last X-Files recording. I did not come to this decision easily, and ultimately this decision rests with me. The most difficult part of this realization was knowing that I would no longer be talking to all of you about the X-Files. I wanted to thank all of you for being there with us during the live recordings, and for always commenting on our Facebook posts, and for always making our various contests fun and engaging. You are one of the best communities going. I wanted to thank Josh for his contribution to this show over the years. He’s been a fine co-host and producer. Make sure you show him some support and check out his podcast, Nastgram (https://www.facebook.com/Nastygram/). They are producing content weekly, and if you’ve ever been curious about things like D&D and other role-playing games, I’d highly recommend it. It’s well produced, and he’s assembled a great group around him. As for myself and LSG Media my hope is that you check out The Lost Drive-In and Kirking Off. Finally, if any of you want to start an X-Files podcast I would be more than happy to help you out with that process. I know some listeners have expressed interest in teaming up with each other to start something, and I fully encourage that. An episode in which Josh and Dean were hoping for literal demons not the cute metaphorical ones. Additionally, the lads discuss Gen-X Mulder's self-torturing ways and how outrageous it would be to not be jumping for joy to get out of jail. Mulder should consider utilizing a lawyer, and listening to what Scully is saying instead of doing his best impersonation as the Incredible Sulk. Not a terrible episode, but does it do enough to get dubbed a 'like' from Josh and Dean?

Additionally, we learn that Scully, the most qualified doctor in the bar where Agent Pendrell was fatally shot, decides that she is going to run around with her gun, rather than administer life-saving aid to her rapidly expiring coworker. And dear listener, don't fret, we WILL talk about the finer points of the episode.

Roland 100% carries this episode, and he does it so well that the lads both landed on a solid "like" for an episode that would have faltered more with a lesser actor and character at the fore-front of the action. Roland is all heart. Look too closely at the plot and the mustache-twirling scientists motivations become a bit inconceivable. A couple of plot brush-ups (around the antagonists) and you have an A-class episode, but as it stands, it's not a list topper.

1-17: "E.B.E."

This is a perfect example of outstanding execution with a tight and well-planned script. The lads imagine what this episode would look like from Ranheim's position, and they reflect on the classic nature of the "transporting dangerous cargo" story. Outside of some logistical inconsistencies in travel planning, and a miss in the early part of the investigation, it's clearly excellent television. The lads also heap praise upon the Iraqi pilot who managed a kill, but lament the unfortunate journey of an advanced alien that traveled to Earth, only to be shot down by the less-than-formidable Iraqi Air Force.

1-15: "Lazarus"

Dean and Josh consider why Lazarus is one of those middling episodes that nobody really talks or cares about, and they keep coming back to the same culprit: Agent Jack Willis, despite Christopher Allport's best efforts, just isn't a character that is particularly likable or sympathetic. The episode relies too heavily on creating sympathy for him through Scully's POV. Sadly, it doesn't work. That tattoo thing is dumb too, but neither reason is cause to write the episode off. The episode is not bad, on the contrary, there is plenty to like especially Allport's performance. There is also some slick tactical movement (finally!), the always popular psychic transference device, and some legitimate police work from Mulder.

1-14: "Gender Bender"

History doesn't look too favorably on "Gender Bender", but Josh and Dean give the thematic choices a bit of latitude and ask you to consider some alternative ways to consider the issues of sexuality present in this episode. Outside of the social implications there is plenty to celebrate. Most notably, Rob Bowman. Bowman made his X-Files directorial debut and composed some beautiful shots of the Kindred village, the eerie barn ritual at night, and some slick (and eerie) forest photography. Gender Bender isn't topping any favorite lists, but it is certainly a beautifully shot and likable episode.
