Jerrod Hogan's path to leadership is anything but conventional. He grew up learning the virtues of empathy and service from a devoted Baptist pastor. A pivotal moment came when his family moved to Missouri due to his mother's cancer diagnosis. Following her passing, Jerrod decided to make Missouri his permanent home, raising his young daughter there.

Jerrod joined Anderson Engineering, a firm where he spent two decades evolving both personally and professionally. But a life-altering event came in the form of the devastating Joplin tornado in 2011. The tragedy revealed to him the incredible power of community and the human capacity for mutual support in times of crisis.

This event served as a catalyst for Jerrod, making him recognize the untapped potential of collective responsibility and active participation. It opened his eyes to the concept of extreme employee ownership. Inspired, he took bold steps to transform the very company he had been part of for so long.

The shift was dramatic. Jerrod led Anderson Engineering through a rebranding and restructuring process that embraced an employee ownership model. This courageous move had manifold benefits. It allowed team members to share in the company's success, elevated client satisfaction and instilled a sense of belonging among employees.

Last year, the renowned Palace Theatre, which has hosted performances by legends like Judy Garland and Bob Hope, was elevated 30 feet to create space for premium retail outlets beneath it. The theatre's prime location at the most bustling intersection in the Northern Hemisphere, right in the middle of Times Square, prompted this decision.

Over a span of seven years, this trio, along with their respective teams at Mancini Duffy, Severud Associates, and Pavarini McGovern, persevered through a myriad of obstacles and invented novel methods to accomplish what seemed to be an insurmountable task.

The project, which is now on the brink of completion, is set to revolutionize the way individual Architecture, Engineering, and Construction firms interact with each other and their public and private clients on large-scale projects.

Janki DePalma is the Senior Associate and Director of Business Development at Kirksey Architecture in Austin, Texas. In addition to her BD exploits, she has become an expert in creating psychologically safe spaces for teams to thrive and innovate.

Janki DePalma was on episode 183 of the Zweig Letter Podcast, where she discussed active listening, empathy, building relationships, and practicing self-control which are all critical ingredients of a successful business developer in the Design Industry.

Roger Krulak, considered the “OG” of Modular Building, has been in the construction and development industry for most of his life and was determined to find a solution to the lack of efficiency he experienced. After being charged with building a large project in Brooklyn, he moved to develop a more efficient way to build mid- to high-rise modular buildings.

He created a system that held up well to seismic, wind, and snow forces and was transportable. His hope and intention are to build many of these modular structures throughout the United States and create a design-build process to solve affordable housing needs.

Through his hard work and determination, he is making a difference in helping to fulfill the basic human needs of shelter.

Mike Woeber is the CEO and founder of Corporate Tax Advisors (CTA). This nationwide tax credit advisory firm has helped clients save over $75 million in tax credits since its founding in 2012.

Mike Woeber began his career at Ernst & Young and built a strong foundation in the income tax world. After working his way up to a tax partner for a local firm in North Alabama, Mike learned a lot about the R&D tax credit and how it applied to the aerospace and defense industry. After meeting Dawson Fercho and forming a friendship, they decided to create CTA to focus on building relationships with their clients. James Garrett Jr. has been pushing the needle forward in the design industry for more than two decades. He recently received several awards and is now in the process of transitioning into a new physical office space with two other black businesses. To ensure success, James advises young entrepreneurs to get a partner with a different skill set and perspective. He also suggests looking at historically black colleges and universities for design talent. By connecting with other businesses and taking risks, James is elevating the design industry one step at a time.
