At the 20th annual LCI Congress, James Pease and Brittanie Campbell-Turner present on the topic of “How to Increase Adoption of the IPD Model by Using Blockchain.”

In this presentation, James and I talked about how it’s unquestionably the future to incorporate blockchain and smart contracts with construction contracting.

In this presentation, we focus on integrated project delivery contracting although blockchain can impact / streamline any contracting model pending the algorithms are built correctly.

James and I decided to focus IPD specifically because of the similarities of transparency contracting with both IPD and a distributed ledger technology.

I see this year, 2019, as the year of leadership.

Which comes with humility and self-awareness, with the ability to Return back to joy. It comes with vulnerability and transparency. It comes with being yourself.

Have you ever heard the saying 'flying by the seat of your pants'?

According to phrases.org, "This is an early aviation parlance. Aircraft initially had few navigation aids and flying was accomplished by means of the pilot's judgment. ... The old flying expression of 'flies by the seat of his trousers' was explained by Larry Conner, means going aloft without instruments, radio or other such luxuries."

What makes a leader? You cannot fly by the seat of your pants and expect to meet success. What I mean by that is - if you don't know the measurement of what you starting from with you not know the measure in which you intend to improve.

What I’m excited about is intentional leadership. Each one of the people on this episode spoke with me at the LCI congress as this episode is a continuation of the LCI recap. Each person has a different take on what leadership looks like and how they serve their communities to take them to self-sufficiency.

I wanted to make special mention that the first voice you will hear in the in the intro - the voice of Henry Nutt, LCI - Pioneer Award Winner. He received that award because of his ability to open up pathways for others to also be able to define their own leadership capability - encouraging others to do things based on who they are and who they want to be. In turn, this results in achieving beyond status-quo because you are not trying to be like someone else. Your value comes with being authentic. He tells us of the steps he took in becoming a pioneer and what we can learn from it.

Blockchain for Collaborative Communities

Ephraim Feig, is an IEEE Life Fellow and has a Ph.D. in Mathematics. He was the manager of Signal Processing and Coding at IBM’s Watson Research Center; CTO and CMO at Kintera, an early cloud company; Senior Director of Services Architecture at Motorola; and Associate CIO for Vision and Strategy at Social Security Administration.

He is an inventor on 33 US patents and author on over 100 research publications in a plethora including blockchain. I invited Ephraim on the podcast to talk with me about the enterprise use of blockchain solutions, trust based relationship between collaboratively working enterprise teams and how those behaviors impact how that changes the way a blockchain should work. We talk about how and why we should be more critical of what is typically described as a blockchain solution ( and the difference between Bitcoin blockchain and Git). Lastly our discussion points out ways to to support more collaboration, and promote more trusting relationships with the data structure of blockchain.

How to Reduce Risk by Leveraging an Engineering Cooperative

Thomas Wendling is an advisor to the Integrated Engineering Blockchain Consortium, (IEBC) a professional systems engineer at Jacobs Engineering, and a co-founder of CoEngineers.io, a blockchain engineering platform cooperative.

I spoke with Dan Robles from the Integrated Engineering Blockchain Consortium, (IEBC) in episode 66 at EP 66, who birthed the idea of an engineering resume that promotes training to fill the skill gap and reduces the risk on engineering design. I’ve met Thomas because he is an advisor to the IEBC and we are working together contributing to CoEngineers.io, a blockchain engineering platform cooperative. We talk about this economic value model that can help to reduce risk by understanding the intrinsic value of a person who has a skill regardless of background.

Before we cover CoEng, I discuss with Thomas about what has been doing in his career with Jacobs. We talk about the current state of infrastructure - the notion of obsolescence of physical or capital property or assets, and what happens when a property exist for longer than its intended life with less maintenance than ideal.

Chris Dorian is the CEO and Founder at BuildSort, where BuildSort is a blockchain technology that assists with the building and construction industry to support supply chain, documentation, tracking project management metrics, in addition to integration with BIM.

In episode 57, Kimon Onuma talked about Creating Agility and Efficiency by using Architecture as a Platform - that episode is very useful to understand what BuildSort provides because we cover how to make the data in BIM models useful.

Building architects and engineers are using building information modeling however, there’s a lot of rework in the system in order for the data in the models to be useful. The general contractor, trades, and suppliers often work together to rebuild review and approve usable BIM models for their scope of work. If companies were able to sell their data back and forth with one another on a platform it would reduce the amount of rework in the industry and THIS is what BuildSort provides.

Chris has a background in structural engineering design and values the use of BIM. We talk about that and how BuildSort may be able to support a solution to get us to BIM Level 3. It is great to hear his perspective.

Microgrid: Creating Resiliency for Cities and Establishing a New Energy Marketplace

Maggie Clout, Business Development Manager at Siemens. She is the lead business developer for 17 project wins of New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) NYPrize Community Microgrid Program.

We discuss a pilot project where Siemens worked with a company, LO3, to transact, buy and sell solar energy between neighbors on a blockchain. From a real estate standpoint using a Microgrid platform can allow for transparency in how much energy you've used, sold, bought, and what the financial benefits are. It opens up a door for real estate owners to generate income from unused electricity or heat generation in their portfolios.

James Salmon was part of our panel at our Blockchain in Construction event here in Chicago. In Kimon Onuma’s episode here, we talk about Creating Agility and Efficiency and Open Architecture as a Platform, Kimon mentioned James. We connected after that interview and I invited him to speak at my Blockchain in Construction event.

James is a lawyer by trade, and is passionate about the Common Data Environment, BIM/ Integrated Contract Models which led him to Blockchain. Dr. Stephen Mulva Director of CII, an Organized Research Unit of the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. His current research projects are focused on the performance and productivity of capital projects in most sectors of the modern economy.

In addition to his responsibilities at CII, Stephen teaches graduate courses in Construction Engineering and Project Management at the University of Texas. Before coming to CII Stephen taught Construction Management at Texas State University. He has held industry positions at Fluor, Bechtel, Phillips Petroleum and as a project management consultant for ePM.

In this episode we discuss CII’s latest Conference in August 2017 and we review what Stephen spoke about, particularly the benefits of flattening the supply chain, Stretching the dollar and shrinking for agility.

Chris Wilson. Chris is the owner and CEO of two social enterprises in Baltimore City. One is a Construction General Contracting firm called Barclay’s Investment corporation. The other Furniture manufacturing company called, house of Davinci where they produce high-end furniture. One of the furniture pieces in the new furniture line will be commissioned by Red Bull!

The reason why I wanted to speak with Chris is because I’m looking for companies who are giving to their communities – you will see me interview more companies that are interested in uplifting people, who are positively impactful. They are helping humanity by:

Paying it forward and giving back
Making the world a better place to be
& Loving People

And Chris Wilson is because he tends to hire people who need help the most, unemployed – returning citizens who just came out of prison.

One thing I ask Ken about is diversity and demographic trends in America. He mentions 2 things: latino immigrants have been contributing to the economy in really important way and are a growing population that we should be paying attention to. And the black male population that is imprisoned touches millennial, Generation X and Baby Boomer generations. We need have a plan for that. No one knows what to do with that population and no one wants to talk about.

This is where Chris Wilson’s story comes in.
